This one was so much fun! Kinda felt Indiana Jones-esque to me but with a romance novelist for a heroine! Loved the chemistry between the leads, loved seeing Danny DeVito, loved the music! Is the sequel Jewel of the Nile any good?

OMG have loved this movie since I was a kid!!! Jewel of the Nile is, goood…but this is a great movie.

Joel

Jewel of the Nile is not quite this good, but still a fun ride, definitely watch +1

John DiGiantomasso

Did you notice that every time when things get really dedperate in this movie it's always Joan who finds the way out, not Jack? "Write us out of this one, Joan Wilder." "Joan Wilder? Joan Wilder! I read your books!"

Major Peril

Yep... The Jewel of the Nile (1985) is a worthy sequel and quite watchable. 👍

Ortizmo

JotN is decent. There have been worse sequels.

This was my first time watching Romancing the Stone. I was too young to see it when it first hit theaters, and I just never got around to watching it. What an oddball of a film. It plays out almost like a parody. It's a cute romance, but the plot is ridiculous. I can't see myself watching it again, but I'm glad I finally know what it's all about.

Rob Nichols

This was a great birthday present, thanks Jen. This is the third time my b-day coincided with Easter.

One of my favourite 80's adventure movies! Glad you enjoyed it. Fun adventure heist movies you might like; After the Sunset (2004) featuring two 007 actors (Brosnan) & (Harris) -Craig's Moneypenny! Also, I highly recommend Brosnan's The Thomas Crown Affair (1999) If you haven't seen that either (fantastic score as well!). Jewel of the Nile is not on par with RtS, but not awful, worth considering.

The writers messed up - snakes are *venomous* not poisonous (tho there might be a few poisonous snake species, idk). They could have used that as an opportunity for the jungle-astute Michael Douglas's character to correct her on the difference.

Yann Laliberte

Saw this movie in theater back then. Loved it so much, each time I see it, I'm 8 years old again hoping there is a jewel hidden in every water spring or waterfall I see in the woods.. Di d not care for the sequel that much though.

I kept waiting on the Romancing The Stone song from Eddy Grant!!! I thought it was gonna be played at the end, but it wasn't. I know it was a hit back in the day and can hear it in my mind still, lol.....Also another thing I remember is that Kathleen Turner kept getting intentionally sexier and sexier as the movie went along, lol

Eric Denney

Can't recommend Jewel of the Nile, it's a shadow of this film. But some people think it's okay, so I'd put it up to a poll.

Mastervodo

That's what I think of when I think of this movie too.

Mastervodo

Jewel of the Nile is not so good. And it was only made because this one happened to be a bit popular, not that it was intended to be a continuation of the story. Cash grab.

Mastervodo

I do like this movie, don't get me wrong. I think Kathleen Turner's smile is just so pretty! And the legs! By the way, the actress who plays Elaine in the opening "book" scene was Kymberly Herrin. One thing I don't like about these 80's movies are the fake gunfire sounds. So fake. Seems like everyone used the same stock sounds. They also should have put in at least 1 Wilhelm Scream in here. Missed opportunity. Did they not have fax machines at this time? I mean, if they had Xerox machines, you would think a copy of the map and an international phone call to Cartegena would have saved a lot of time and trouble.

Ian

This was a fun one and no wonder you have been recommended it a lot , we all know your love of maps and adventure movies so this was always going to be a fun one for you and it sure was proved to be the case 🙂 I really enjoyed this one , no clue about jewel of the Nile but from what I read it should be one you will enjoy just as much so give it a go , I would definitely be up for watching along with you 👍

Major Peril

Nice! That might have made for some great comedic back-and-forth dialogue during the airplane “campfire” scene. 😄

HeWhoLooksSkyward

That still would have left her in possession of the map, which potentially means she could recover the stone first.

Major Peril

I KNEW you were going to like this one! 😃 What’s not to like. A crazy romp through the Colombian jungle in pursuit of a super-sized emerald while being chased by crazed police troopers and criminal brothers bent on getting it first. It’s got everything you could want! Some other ‘80s adventure-y movies you might like (or not) and a couple later: Crocodile Dundee (1986) The Golden Child (1986) King Solomon's Mines (1985) Allan Quartermaine and the Lost City of Gold (1986) Year of the Comet (1982) High Road to China (1983) Quigley Down Under (1990) Six Days Seven Nights (1998) For something a little different starring Kathleen Turner, how about a sexy murder mystery thriller: Body Heat (1981) PSA: Go to https://www.jenmurrayxo.com now and upvote your favorites!

Jewel of the Nile isn't quite as good as this, still fun and very much worth watching... I think you would enjoy it as you now know the characters.

Richard Meacham

I sent Jen an email but didn’t get a reply. Does anyone know if she is going to watch the second season of The Last of Us ? If she is I will wait and watch it with her.

Jen Murray

I'm not watching it as it airs. May watch it in future

So excited to see you caught this one, Jen. The sequel, Jewel of the Nile is kinda even more fun (if a bit less polished, heh), you would probably REALLY enjoy that. Danny Devito makes it great. :)

Christian Rennie

Quigley Down Under is kinda a forgotten gem. I think you mean Night of the Comet? (Year of the Comet) which is one of my fav B-movie sci-fi/horror movies. I used to quote that one a ton. For 80s movies it might be time to watch Willow (1988) not to mention it has Val Kilmer in it.

Major Peril

Nope. I meant Year of the Comet (1992, misquoted the year), a little remembered action adventure romantic comedy starring Penelope Ann Miller and Tim Daly. Night of the Comet (1984) is also one my longtime 80s sci-fi/horror/comedy favorites. Yes, Willow (1988) should always be listed in any instance where 80s classics are mentioned, regardless of genre.

JPDotCom23

Yes, check out 'Jewel of the Nile', it was a lot of fun but you should also watch 'The War of the Roses', directed by Danny DeVito, these three leads are reunited in that movie.

pinkdino99

This trio (Douglas, Turner, De Vito) also reunited after the sequel for the comedy War of the Roses. Another classic De Vito from the 80s that you would love is called Ruthless People. De Vito is on his way home to kill his wife (Bette Midler), but unfortunately she has been taken by inept kidnappers Judge Reinhold (Rosemont High, Beverley Hills Cop) and Helen Slater (Supergirl). Has sone really funny moments. "I'M ROBBING YOU !"

pinkdino99

Also Jen... for some reason you have not done LA Confidential (Danny De Vito again), which is a top ten movie on many many lists. 50s cop drama with Guy Pearce and Russel Crowe in their breakout roles with Kevin Spacey. It is easily the best film you have not yet reacted to.
