A comedy Western full of double crosses and cahooting! Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster surprised me with their chemistry and this was a fun romp with lots of twists along the way. Only just heard it was also a tv show, very curious if it's anything like the movie?

Well, James Garner stars in the TV show 😄. Looking forward to this! Haven't watched it since it came out lol

I'm very happy you watched this, Jen😌 It's one of my top favourite comedies, resp. Western genre comedies. You can feel the great dir. Richard Donner's influence and virtuosity behind it. Such a versatile filmmaker (Superman, all Leathal Weapon movies, Scrooged, The Goonies, and many more..).. I also loved Danny Glover's cameo (the masked bank robber) and direct Leathal Weapon reference with Gibson. Hilarious.. It's also one of the few movies which - as you said - keep up the twists and reveals to the almost last minute. When I saw it the first time, I wasn't aware of James Garners Maverick portrayal in the 60ies series (perhaps I'd have guessed his relation to Gibson/Maverick a bit earlier then..). Foster and Gibson must have had an absolute blast making this movie. I heard once, they could barely continue some scenes, because they had to laugh a lot while shooting.. They became very close friends. Even during Gibson's difficult times and the negative media coverage he experienced much later on, she always had his back publicly. And Randy Newman's superb musical contribution doesn't need more mentioning as well.. Looking forward to your final TNG season.. 🙏🏻

FUN ROMP ENERGY!!!! WOOOOOO!

So back in the fifties/sixties the TV show was episodic adventures of four gamblin' Maverick brothers wandering around the old west. Brett (James Garner), Bart (Jack Kelly), Brent (Robert Colbert), and... Beau (ROGER MOORE!!!!) ❤️❤️❤️ (I know you are fond of him from the James Bond films. 😉)

Thank you so much Jen!.. I was feeling frustrated earlier and seeing this movie after like 15 years really lightened my mood

James Garner was lead in “The Rockford Files” (TV Series 1974–1980 on NBC) that I watched as it aired. The series was about Jim Rockford [played by James Garner], an ex-convict-turned-private-investigator.

This is a great movie. James Garner was the original Maverick years ago. If you like him, you should also look at Support Your Local Sheriff and Support Your Local Gunfighter. Both are funny movies. Graham Greene (Joseph the Indian Chief) i a funny guy. I know an elder from the Wenatchee Nation in Wenatchee, WA that knows him. Greene, however, plays a bad bad terribly evil man in the TV Series Longmire. You really should watch it if available up there. It's a great show. James Coburn was in the original Magnificent Seven. He also starred in a series of spy movies in the 60's such as Our Man Flint, In Like Flint, and others with Flint in the name. He's always been a great actor. I've always had a crush on Jody Foster as long as I can remember. I first saw her on Kung Fu, then on Saturday Night Live back in the early 70s. I'm glad you liked this movie. I thought you would. Thanks for doing what you do. I really enjoy it. Greg

This was one of the movies I made sure to grab the day it came out on VHS. I never understood how this movie wasnt bigger and doesnt often come up in great movie conversations. It did pretty good, but it should have been much bigger.

Lee R.

James Garner & James Coburn were both in The Great Escape! You should also really watch Bugsy Malone with a young Jodie Foster, very fun musical type movie.

John DiGiantomasso

Jen, you smiled the entire time watching this movie! Not "sore cheeks" one gets from laughing uncontrollably for two straight hours, but genuine delight and amusement. Nice! I like this movie a lot, too. Notice James Garner (Henly/scrounger) and James Coburn (Sedgwick/manufacturer) from The Great Escape together again? Support Your Local Sheriff is another great James Garner comedy/western. The beautiful scenery of the Indian village was Yosemite Valley in Yosemite National Park in central California. Canadian Rockies, while gorgeous, ain't got nothin' on the High Sierra! You should see Yosemite. Go visit! Really enjoyable reaction. Thanks!

A fun note Jodie Foster was offered this film with the expectation it would be rejected by the Oscar winner. To everyone's surprise, she said yes

Hmmm...do you know another Richard Donner movie? Ladyhawke!! :) Sorry, couldn't resist. Yep - a few country music stars in cameos - a couple of their songs were in the soundtrack as well. I am sure someone has already mentioned that James Garner (The Great Escape, Support your Local Sherriff, The Rockford Files) was also the OG maverick back in the black and white TV series in the ancient days. He mentioned that he reprised his role as Bret Maverick for this movie, and that Mel Gibson played Bret Jr. This one is one of the the family favorites, along with The Great Escape and Support Your Local Sheriff. I enjoyed this reaction a lot! Thanks so much.

The Rockford files was a great series i grew up with that , each episode would begin with an answering machine and a different message each time .

I like how they tied the movie into the t.v. show. I remembered watching the t.v. show when I was a kid, so when I saw this in the theater and saw that James Garner (Maverick from the t.v. show) was in it, I was curious where it was going. I thought it was a lot of fun.

This was a fantastic reaction. I absolutely love this movie, it's such a blast. I had a feeling it would be well received and would make for a great reaction. It's pure, entertaining fun, and the chemistry between Gibson and Foster is incredible, with Garner adding so much as well. The film wasn’t a huge hit, though. On a $75 million budget, it only made about $100 million domestically, just barely breaking even with international sales. Over time, it became sort of a hidden, forgotten gem that most people don’t really know about anymore. It’s a shame, because I definitely would have loved to see one or two sequels. A fun trivia: the exact date is not specified, but it is somewhere around the 1870s to 1880s. The $25.000 entry fee would be somewhere around $600.000 in today's money. So, the half a million would be a fortune of around 12 million dollars. PS: regarding western comedies, there indeed are not that many. But I can recommend the movie THEY CALL ME TRINITY (1970) and its sequel, TRINITY IS STILL MY NAME (1971). These are starring the comedic duo Bud Spencer and Terrence Hill. Two Italian actors born Mario Girotti and Carlo Pedersoli. They are not that well known in the USA, but are big stars in some European countries. They made nearly 2 dozen films together, and dozens on their own. These two movies are some satirical takes on the Spaghetti western genre.

I just realized that I left out quite some things in my last comment on Maverick.. So many great cameos in this one. The movie is not only so funny, witty and well written and acted, it's also much self-aware.. It's paying tribute to many Western classics (Sergio Leone moods, e. g. at the very beginning), Clint Eastwood's sidekick (and father of Juliette Lewis) Geoffrey Lewis playing the bank manager, and my absolute favourite.. Graham Greene basically spoofing his own character - kind of - from Dances With Wolves, which is one of my top ten films.. The way he parodies and comments on the entire historical Native American / frontier context within just a few scenes cracks me up every time. Priceless.. Enjoyed your reaction very much..🙏🏻

I love this movie. When I was little, here in Brazil the dubbed version of the movie used to play on TV. And the voice they used for Mavericks dad was the same voice actor as the Batman Animated series which was a guy with deepest voice you ever heard.

Kristin

I second Jen watching Dances with Wolves. The scenery, the music, the story, the acting, it's incredible. And to entice her a little more...Graham Greene is Canadian. Everyone loves in him everything he does.

Kristin

Really looking forward to this. One of my favorite comedies! Two movie suggestions: Dances with Wolves to see Graham Greene in a similar and serious role. Contact with Jodie Foster to see her in an awesome sci-fi movie.

Director Richard Donner, who speaks fluent Mel, also directed all four 'Lethal Weapon' movies, as well as 'Conspiracy Theory'. And James Garner, of 'The Notebook' fame, who played Cooper, was the original Brett Maverick on the 60's tv series. The main bad guy, Angel, is Alred Molina, Doc Ock of 'Spider-Man 2'. Hope you saw the little cameo in the bank. And the country song 'A Good Run of Bad Luck' is sung by Clint Black, that's the song that starts playing during the poker game, Black was the first poker player caught cheating, he was tossed overboard.

Bammer

A couple James Garner westerns I'd recommend are "Support Your Local Gunfighter" and "Support Your Local Sheriff". The Lauren Belle sternwheeler steamboat, real name Portland, is currently moored here in Downtown Portland, Oregon at the Tom McCall Waterfront Park. She was built and launched in 1947 and served the Port of Portland as a tugboat until she was retired in 1981. Ownership was transferred to the Oregon Maritime Museum for $1 in 1991 where restoration work began with the intent of turning her into a stationary museum ship. Restoration was completed in 1993. She still operates for tour cruises along the Willamette River. She is the only surviving original steam powered sternwheeler ship in operation in Oregon. A replica, non-steam powered, sternwheeler was constructed in 1983 and operates on the Columbia River Gorge giving tours.

R. Chang

As somebody who voted for this film, it’s just because it’s a fun movie that I enjoy. Nothing more than that.

R. Chang

Support your local sheriff/gunfighter are great recommendations. I loved these when I was a kid.

Clay F

I enjoyes The Rockford Files as a teen in the late 70s.

Jason Scade

Great reaction, I'm happy you enjoyed it so much. 😅🤠🃏♣♠♦💜 This film reminds me of wonderful summers. Richard Donner sure made some very entertaining movies. Shout out for 'Superman II: The Donner Cut'.

Muhammad Rahbar

Lightning Jack is another good western comedy that also came out in 1994.

Mr. Mike's Multiverse

Jen, one cameo you missed and no one has mentioned is the woman with the wedding dress making eyes at Coop. That was Margot Kidder (Lois Lane in the Superman movies with Christopher Reeve)

crazyivan

The entire movie (especially the poker tournament scenes) was chock full of old western movie and tv stars and the reason you heard Country music was it used to be referred to as Country & Western (lots of C&W stars on the paddle wheel boat, too)...if you like James Garner, he was in The Great Escape and The Americanization of Emily (with Julie Andrews)...both worth a watch. Great reaction!
