This one ended up having more heart than I was expecting - Sonny got me in the feels! This one is really relevant now and got my wheels turning! What other robot/AI movies should we check out?

Give A.I. a try. Started by Kubrick, finished by Spielberg and pretty much a companion piece to 2001. It's also quite divisive amongst movie fans. I'm a big fan.

Kristin

Well, it's not AI or robots, but still relevant to a cyberpunk/hyper tech future we might face. Johnny Mnemonic with Keanu Reeves. The graphics might seem a little dated, but the story is still interesting.

I love much of Asimov's works, especially his non-fiction books. But Will Smith? Nope.

Rob Nichols

The movie is fine, but I was disappointed that it had nothing to do with Asimov's book. For another robot movie try The Questor Tapes (1974) made by Gene Roddenberry as a TV pilot that didn't get picked up. A lot of Data's character was based on Questor, including a moment in season 2's The Royale.

A.I. is a must watch you but keep tissues handy. Stanley Kubrick was supposed to direct and had the rights to the story but the computer effects he wanted were not advanced enough for his vision so it never got made in his lifetime. Spielberg stayed close to what he would have wanted but in his own style. I don't think anyone has really reacted to this so I hope you get it first!

This movie is very polarizing, but I like it a lot. There are people who will tell you that this has nothing to do with the books and is just a cash grab on the name, but I disagree. A theme in a lot of the stories is that a strictly-codified morality, strictly followed, leads to pain and death and suffering. Real morality is situational, relative, and fluid, and a robot-like adherence to rules has caused untold masses of casualties in history. Since that is the theme of the film, I think it slots in quite nicely with the other stories in the anthologies.

I, will catch this reaction asap. Glad you enjoyed. AI movie recommendation, without a doubt the brand new 2025 film 'Companion'. Horror / drama. ------- From Wiki; Companion is a 2025 American science fiction thriller film starring Sophie Thatcher (Heretic) and Jack Quaid (The Boys) as a couple on a weekend getaway with friends at a remote cabin, which unravels into chaos after a revelation that one of the guests is a companion robot. ------- It's a wickedly sharp take on toxic partners and their controlling behaviors as well as the AI moral dilemma element it poses. We were on the edge of our seats. Would love to re-watch it. Sophie Thatcher is an outstanding actor. ♥ 😍 At time of writing, I could only find around 20 reactions to it on YT and not from any channel that I'm familiar with, then it went to reactions for the teaser trailer. Why not get in early with this one before the *really* huge channels start to do it. 🙂 This film is a masterpiece of horror, drama and social commentary. You'll really love it (by the time it's over).

For a really great AI movie set during the cold war try Colossus : The Forbin Project.

Major Peril

So glad that Isaac Asimov devised The Three Laws of Robotics back in the day. Can you imagine the amount of potential chaos that might have ensued in science fiction books and movies if those laws were not in place? 🤣🤣🤣 Here’s some more robot/A.I. action you might try: * A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) - the Spielberg movie you were thinking of at the start * Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) * Ex Machina (2014) * Transcendence (2014) * The Creator (2023) * Her (2013) * I Am Mother (2019) - might be Netflix only For some animated robotic fare, try these: * The Iron Giant (1999) * Robots (2005) * The Wild Robot (2024)

Stephen W. Evans

I've been wanting to rewatch this, so perfect timing! Thanks for letting us watch along with you.

Ron

Since you liked this, here a few I think you might also like: * A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) * Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) * Ex Machina (2014) * Bicentennial Man (2001) * Ghost in the Shell (1995) * Tron (1982) * Tron Legacy (2010) * Her (2013)

Jason Kaiser

Demon Seed (1977)! It's a cult classic with the screenplay written by Dean Koontz. I saw it when I was really young and it scared the **** out of me.

Noremac

I didn't know anyone liked this movie.

John DiGiantomasso

A very enjoyable movie (and reaction!) Just a couple minutes in you said something to the effect of, "not an evil robot, or his eyes would be red." Of course the evil robots glowed red, just not from the eyes!

Turnt SNACO

Oh yeah, it's got its fans. People tend to love it or hate it. I personally enjoy it and think it's unfairly over-criticized, just because it isn't sci-fi perfection or something. A lot of movies aren't perfect, but this movie gets a TON of crap for its imperfections.

Turnt SNACO

A.I. is a fascinating movie despite its flaws, and doesnt have enough good reactions. Another great Sci fi film in a similar vein from the same era is Minority Report.

Turnt SNACO

Also recommend A.I., and Minority Report. The former is one of the strangest movies I've seen, but what else would you expect from Kubrick. But it's an interesting journey worth taking at least once. The latter isn't AI or robots, it's just one of the best Sci fi movies post 2000 IMO, it's a total head trip of a thriller, I've watched it so many times. I think you'd enjoy the mystery and intrigue of it; it's a fun movie to try to "figure out".

Scaredy-cat

How about the "first" "A.I." movie Metropolis (1927), maybe for the 100 year anniversary? :) I'm using quotation marks because robots in movies, even hard sci-fi, are more golems than artificial intelligence, and those have a slightly longer history. Still, Metropolis certainly has some firsts.

Mastervodo

I am guessing Jen confused this movie with A.I. or Minority Report.

Jack O

The engineers who designed and built these robots had a moment where they thought to themselves 'Some of these LEDs need to be able to turn red for when they become evil.'

Marqushio

Am I the only one who liked M3gan, or is everyone just afraid to admit it? It's a mixed bag, but fun, and still fairly thoughtful. I would love to see Jen's take on it.

Michael B.

See, I don't get why people hate on this movie. Some say the CGI isen't good. Some say they don't like it because of it's just another Will Smith action flick. Some say it's a bad rehash of the tired old theme of man vs maschine that other movies did better, like Terminator or The Matrix.I think the CGI is fine to really good. Sonny looks great. I think Will Smith's acting is great in this movie. So is Bridget Moynahan's and Alan Tudyk's, who plays Sonny. Terminator and The Matrix are great movies, but I think I, Robot has a different flavor of this theme. Less man vs maschne and more machine interprets life differently.

Mark T

Early takes on AI (both rather low budget but still powerful) Dark Star (1974) Android (1982)

Marco Borromeo

I fully agree with many of you..: A.I. (2001) Minority Report (2002) (well, it's rather about Dystopia/Surveillence and a Thriller Noir.., but one of my top films..) Moon (2009) Ex Machina (2012) Her (2013) Chappie (2015) (directed by District 9 creator Neil Bloomkamp..) You would surely like all of them, I think.. And in terms of series..: Black Mirror is a MUST show for you. And if you somehow can get it (seems a bit tricky): Real Humans (the 2012 Swedish original..)

warcrimes

Wish yall would tell us how long the movie is so we can search for the right copy

Ian

If you look at the text under the thumbnail you will see how long the movie is , Jen always adds the movie length there 👍 in this case Movie Runtime: 1:54:44

Jen Murray

Yes I always list the runtime in the description of every movie post. If I know it's a certain cut I always note it in the description 👍

Jason Kinkaid

Good old K2SO saving the day, oh waite I mean Sonny🤣

Casey Dixon

Will Smith is almost always Will Smith except when he is playing real people like in "The Pursuit of Happyness" and "Ali"

Greg In East TN

It has been many years since I watched this movie, so it was like a new movie. I enjoyed watching it with you. You may have already seen him, but it you haven't, you will see him in Star Trek some day. That gal looked so familiar, but I couldn't remember from where. It finally hit me, the TV show Blue Bloods is where I recognized her from. Be well, Greg :)
