Geordie Joe

Ceazy to think you're on season 2 of DS9 already Jen.

SirJohnCard

The first Star Trek 3-Parter. Enjoy the ride!

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I love season 1, as much as I love the early seasons of TNG. But season 2 DS9 is just noticeably improved. The crew dynamics in particular just immediately pop in a way that hadn't come along yet in S1.

Geoff S.

The cast of DS9 was known as being very professional and not prone to joking around like the TNG cast did.

Brett Whittaker

I find it hard to believe that Kira would leave Quark alone in her quarters

Bobby Coolbreeze

The series starts to take off from here! Season 2 has more variety and different stories and some plot lines will expand. No spoilers but we will get more hints for the future of this series, pay attention! As always I enjoy this weekly “Trek” down memory lane!

Good episode! Lee is a complicated character. We'll see how it takes shape. Love this show and lovin' the reactions always. Hope you're doing well and feeling good.

Chris Biebel

She didn't even know this was to be continued. It would probably have been good to not spoil it.

There definitely is a feeling of DS9 being more 'lived-in' in this episode. It could be the actors being far more comfortable in their roles now, or making better use of the existing sets with more dynamic shots (the initial pan across Quark's balcony, for instance). But the fact this season opener was the *start* of a story arc, rather than the conclusion of a cliff-hanger as TNG was prone to do, allowed the plot to breathe a little more.

jon bolton

Glad you enjoyed this opener, i love it. Great stuff ahead which i look forward to seeing with you.

jon bolton

I agree in a way, but i'm part of the minority who love Season 1 too.

Opti_Frog

God, i love Kira.

phillip giroux

I never had a dad but if I had I would want one like Sysco

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

I've gotta say, I absolutely love Quark and Odo—two of the best characters in all of Trek, hands down. And it always makes me smile when you hum the TNG and DS9 themes. I totally forgot this episode ended on a cliffhanger—it's been a while since I last rewatched DS9. Funny enough, I remember the later seasons way more clearly than the early ones. This really kicks off a bigger arc, too—very different from the way TNG usually wraps up its two-parters.

Jen's really taking to quark he is amusing and Jen's often amused by him 🙂 . Don't forget to add your monthly recommendations and upvote all you like on Jen's request site www.jenmurrayxo.com

what amazes me is how relevant much of this is to the politics of today and the past. This show is timeless.

Joel

The level of quality definitely takes a jump here, as well as beginning in Season 3, (no spoilers)

Kristin

Season 1 is solid, great episodes throughout. It's one of the few shows that has a great first season.

scott osborne

odo and quark are enemies and friends but above all they respect each other

Jeremy Nuss

The budget wasn't much larger from season 1 to season 2. It was smaller than TNG and below average for other shows at the time. The behind the scenes story of the DS9 set, especially the promenade is really interesting - in short, it's huge. Unfortunately, any video about it will undoubtedly contain spoilers.

Desmond

Yeah, season 2 of DS9 already pretty great. No sophomore slump for this show.

Desmond

The Federation doesn't have cloaking devices because of a treaty with the Romulans. If they developed the technology anyway it could lead to war.

Zapp Rowsdower

Sisko, but it's funny that there is a company called Sysco. They sell and distribute to restaurants, hospitals and schools. I used to see the name at work and it still made me think of DS9, even with the different spelling.

Jeremy Nuss

I think that's revealed later in the series

ParallaxNick

It might not surprise you to know that Frank Langella (Jaro) played Dracula.

Tom Evans

Opening the second season with a cliffhanger is a good hint about how the writers for DS9 were not afraid to take chances and do unexpected things. Avery Brooks and Cirroc Lofton had great father/son chemistry and it carried over into real life. They had a real bond and Avery treated Cirroc like his real son. I don't know if the budget went up for Season 2, but they didn't have to rebuild all the sets again so I guess there would have been more money available. They did expand and improve some of the sets though, especially the Promenade and around Quark's bar.

George Foot

It's always nice to see Cirroc growing up as well, he matured so quickly and became a much better actor

John DiGiantomasso

No spoilers here, just info. Sisco's drink is a "raktajino" and is always served in the same blue mug. (You can search for one online snd buy it!) It would look good if you used it to sip your beverages during your DS9 reviews! 😉 Here is the common knowledge of what the drink is like: Raktajino is a fictional Klingon coffee drink from the Star Trek universe, often described as a spicy, strong, and bitter beverage, particularly popular on the Deep Space Nine station. It's a portmanteau of "ra'taj" (Klingon liquor) and "cappuccino". While Klingons find it sweet on its own, humans typically sweeten it due to its bitter taste. So now you know.

Gábor Árki

I think it is natural for the production value to feel higher in the second season of most shows, even if the budget remained the same. That's because a lot of the foundational assets, like sets, models, lot of the mask and make-up, and other long-term elements, need to be built from scratch during the first season. Once those are in place, the production has more flexibility in season two to invest in things like additional set pieces, on-location filming, etc.

TC Green

One of the best things about DS9 is it gets better every season

TheADHDOverlord

get used to the feeling of "To Be Continued" LUL

Tyrone Tyrone

Frank Langella as Jaro Essa was great.

Clay F

Agree, good opener. Kira does seem deeply connected to her faith. I liked how Ro Laren seemed more secular.
