Well! This one turned out to be much more philosophical than I expected and had my wheels turning by the end. Would love to hear what you guys make of this and the philosophical ideas in it! Any other Paul Newman movies we should check out?

Awesome! ♥ I've been waiting for this for over 2 years. :D Will catch it tomorrow eve. Hope you enjoyed your Newman sauces. Further Newman; The Hustler The Color of Money (25 year later sequel to above, dir by Scorsese) The Hudsucker Proxy (Coen Bros) The Road to Perdition (period gangster drama)

One great Paul Newman movie you should check out is “The Hustler”.

Geoff S.

I really like The Long Hot Summer with Orson Wells and his real life wife Joanne Woodward. Based on stories by William Faulkner.

Edward korstanje

The Hustler and the 80's sequel Color of money also stars Tom Cruise

One of my favorite films (saw it first in a film class at college). Definitely philosophical and clear religious themes/symbolism in the movie (is the man with the sunglasses God?). In a movie with many highlights, the scene between Luke and his mom is the peak for me.

the dig the hole scene, I've worked with bosses like this, but unlike Luke, I wasn't a prisoner. I quit

Jen! You really watched it! This movie is so iconic. Ask anybody that grew up in the 60s or 70s "What we have here?" and I guarentee they'll say "a failure to communicate!" That was such a popular line. Strother Martin played the warden role perfectly. And George Kennedy did a great supporting role as well. There are so many character actors and future stars in this movie. The guy with glasses was Wayne Rogers who was Trapper John in the TV series MASH, Ralph Waite went on to be the father in The Waltons, several of them went on to be in Kelly's Heroes (you REALLY MUST watch that some day. It's my and every tank vetran's movie!). The guy playing the guitar and singing is Harry Stanton. He's been in everything. Dennis Hopper is even in it. Seeing as how you're in the Great White North, another movie you MUST SEE is Slapshot. Paul Newman and Strother Martin team up again as pieces of a minor league hockey team. It is a true comedy, eh? But there is some drama in it, too. Much different than Cool Hand Luke. I'm really glad you watched this. It's not your ordinary type of movie, but it is an icon. Newman and Kennedy did win Oscars for this movie.

That's the first time I've seen Cool Hand Luke. I really liked it, much better than I thought I would. I think we can all relate to authority figures trying to crush our spirits. The movie as a whole, I can't immediately come up with a good reaction. Really each scene could be interpreted a dozen different ways. It does makes me wish more films used A-class talent to make mature and thoughtful films. Sometimes watching Hollywood movies feels like seeing gourmet chefs make hot dogs.

Today I learned where the speech at the beginning of Guns & Roses' Civil War came from. Great movie!

Philip Cook

Another great Paul Newman movie is Hud (1963). Great Photography filmed in Back and White. Same writer as Lonesome Dove.

Ian

As mentioned below the hustler ( one of the first movies I added to the request site) www.jenmurrayxo.com and the sequel the color of money where Paul Newman co stars with tom cruise , Newman won an academy award for best actor for that movie 🔥 , I know you will enjoy both movies Jen 👍

time to watch cool hand luke and eat some hard boiled eggs

Marc Peterson

Jen, thanks for a great reaction! A truly iconic film. Luke may be one of the most memorable characters in cinema history. George Kennedy won Oscar for best supporting actor. (You know him as Leslie Nielsen’s sidekick Ed in the Naked Gun franchise.). The Schifrin music score and the folk and religious songs added greatly. Very artistically shot movie. I think Luke was a WW2 vet who today would be seen as suffering PTSD. Several directors deal with that issue (Best Years of Our Lives for ex.) When he is shot in the church it seems he is a final casualty of the war. Suggest comedy Slapshot and The Verdict with Newman fabulous as an aging, down on his luck attorney in a David v Goliath case. AFI ranks that #4 in list of Top 10 courtroom dramas.

Major Peril

One of my favorite Paul Newman movies that's not often mentioned is Absence of Malice (1981) with Sally Field. Sydney Pollack directed.

Marc Peterson

Slap Shot (1977) is a sport comedy based upon minor league hockey and shot in rust belt town of Johnstown PA. It is widely considered a cult classic. Newman said he never had more fun than he did on the set of this movie. He could skate and had played hockey, and plays an aging player coach in small town minor hockey. Strother Martin (the warden in Cool Hand Luke) is the team general manager. Many former NHL and AHL players have bit roles. Also well known for the infamous Hanson brothers (Eddie Shore and "old time hockey") and Ogie Ogelthorpe, the enforcer. Some fun, eh?!

Jason Scade

Sydney Pollack had a great part in The Sopranos, just an episode or two though.

Major Peril

Always admired actor/directors who could easily move between those two disciplines like he was able to do and in some cases do both in the same picture. Clint Eastwood did on several of his films. Another more recent example is Jon Favreau with Iron Man, Cowboys & Aliens, The Mandalorian, and also The Sopranos (1 episode).

Excellent reaction and outro. I'm delighted you liked it so much. 🥚🥚🥚 Any man doesn't leave a 'like' spends a night in The Box. Btw, absolutely look away when there's onscreen stuff you don't want to see. Jen to Lucille -- "Just put the whole hose in your mouth." 😅 I added this to the request site originally, it was great to see a bunch of upvotes on it. 👍👍 Papillon is another example of a real classic - but isn't doing too great with upvotes (21). Based on a true story, it's prison/drama/escape. Stars Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman. It's somewhat like the Shawshank of the 60s, pretty brutal. Based on the best-seller of the same name.

Batguano

Another somewhat philosophical movie from Newman's later career is Nobody's Fool. Also features Bruce Willis and is well worth a look.

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

A couple of the actors that looked familiar to you are: Dennis Hopper: -Villain in both Speed and Waterworld -He was also in True Grit and Rebel Without a Cause George Kennedy: -Ed Hocken in The Naked Gun series Harry Dean Stanton: -Brett in Alien -Brain in Escape From New York Joe Don Baker: -Jack Wade in GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies -Brad Whitaker in The Living Daylights

Carlos Stevens

Favorite line from this movie... "Now what we have here... is a failure to communicate..."

Carlos Stevens

If you want to watch a similar movie may I suggest the movie, "Life" Best line from that movie... "...Y'all want your cornbread?" (heh, it's all in the way it was said).

Korny

I’m always surprised how many people don’t know much GnR.

Harvey Lee

Joe Don Baker was a great character actor and is also the only actor to have appeared as both an Ally and a Villain in the James Bond Franchise !! RIP Joe Don Baker

scott

Great reaction to my favorite movie, today anyway, but definitely in my top 5. Being born in 66, I literally grew up with this movie. Dragline is named for a excavating machine because he was such a strong worker. That was explained in the book which is good not as the film. Paul Newman makes great.

Patrick Turman

The only movies that are depressing are movies that are bad.
