Steve McQueen is back and this time he's in an epic car chase, an airport shootout and buying tv dinners at the bodega! Loved the music of course and overall it was really stylish. What other Steve McQueen should we check out?

The Blob 1958, the remake from '88 is cool too. The original has an awesome theme song.

Bullitt was driving a Dark Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 fastback. The baddies were driving a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T. Two Mustangs were used for filming. One was damaged beyond repair and sent to the scrap yard. The other one was repaired and wound up being sold to a family in 1974 and kept with the family until it sold at the Mecum auto auction in Kissimmee, Florida in 2020 for $3.74 Million. In 1977, Steve McQueen did try to buy the car from the family, but they refused to sell it to him. https://www.mecum.com/lots/397388/1968-ford-mustang-gt-bullitt/?aa_id=258678-0 As far as the Dirty Harry series goes, I definitely recommend completing it.

Honestly, really the only thing that this has going for it is that it is Steve’s first starring role. If you want to see an extremely young Steve McQueen watch Wanted:Dead or Alive, which is a western tv show in which McQueen plays a bounty hunter with a heart of gold.

Went to see this as a kid alone. Remember the car chase, but had an excruciating headache that forced me to leave soon after.

Jen did that one a few months ago.

Thanks. Will delete.

So cool! I’ll have to watch this later and respond. Looking forward to it as usual! For now though, some of my favorite Steve McQueen films you haven’t already seen: * The Thomas Crown Affair (1968) * The Getaway (1972) * Papillon (1973) * The Hunter (1980) * Le Mans (1971) - but only if you’re a die-hard endurance car racing fan, like me 😁

Thanks for this one Jen! You asked for some Steve McQueen trivia: While serving in the Marine Corps Steve McQueen received a special citation and was assigned to a Presidential honor guard for saving the lives of several fellow marines while on arctic maneuvers. But he broke many rules in the Marine Corps and sadly one punishment had McQueen clearing dangerous asbestos from old Navy ships without proper gear. Unfortunately, this led to his early death from Mesothelioma just 12 years after this film. In Bullitt, McQueen sought to bring realism to the police procedural and to high-speed pursuits. It was so refreshingly spare and intricate that Robert Vaughn, “Senator Chalmers” once quipped, “The plot seemed to make more sense, the more money they offered me.” While working in Malibu one summer I heard that while living there McQueen instructed his agent to send all scripts to the Malibu Fire Department to have the crew there read them first. Any scripts they liked they could mention when McQueen stopped by to hang out. 😊

The Sand Pebbles is another pretty great McQueen movie set in China. Steve McQueen is great in it. And yes more Dirty Harry! His girl in this movie, Jacqueline Bisset, is a pretty iconic actress in her own right. Her famous dive scene in The Deep (1977) is iconic. She was on par with Farrah as sex symbol of the 1970's. The Deep is also directed by Peter Yates. You would absolutely love this movie. John Barry score, treasure hunt, clues, underwater action and a very Bond like feel to it.

Talk about blowing minds! No one had seen a car chase like the one in Bullitt before… It set the standard that remains… I hope you’ll see The Thomas Crown Affair (1968). The chemistry between McQueen and Faye Dunaway is to-die!!! & It has my personal favorite score of all time by Michel Legrand including the surrealistic ballad: Windmills Of Your Mind.

Would love to see Jen react to The Deep (1977). I've mentioned it a few times in comments before. Yeah, I think it ticks all the boxes for her. She'd love it.

The Magnificent Seven (1960) - Yul Brynner (you saw him in Westworld), Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson (you saw him in The Great Escape), Eli Wallach (prior to playing Tuco in 'The Good the Bad and the Ugly'), Robert Vaughn (was in Bullitt as the U.S. senator).

Nice reaction to a Steve McQueen classic. I can definitely feel that Dirty Harry vibe you mentioned (the other way around actually) that I never saw before, having not seen this film for quite some time. Maybe the Dirty Harry series was influenced by Bullitt style, or perhaps that’s just the way police procedurals were filmed back in the ‘70s. Anyway, great film. As for my choice between the 1968 Ford Mustang GT Fastback and the 1968 Dodge Charger R/T in a street chase, I’d have to go with the Mustang. Pretty sure the car handlers on the film crew performance tuned both but looks like the Mustang had much more suspension work as she’s sitting pretty low on her haunches whereas the Charger is riding way too high to have any kind of decent cornering performance. Of course, they don’t want it to look like they’ve had any work done. Yes, both of these cars were considered “muscle” cars. I owned a 1968 Mustang for a few years in my youth. Sadly, it was neither a GT nor a fastback. Still, it was a nice ride.

Meant to comment a few days ago, but thanks for the reaction Jen. This is the first full length reaction I've ever done. You were right in how movies back in the 60s/70s too their time to build atmosphere and story. I love how Peter Yates did that with this movie. This is probably Steve McQueen's most well known role. He also recommended Robert Vaughn for the role of Chalmers. Robert Vaughn had said when he got the script that the story didn't make much sense to him. But when he found out how much he was going to get paid, the story made a lot more sense to him

Harvey Lee

Steve McQueen initially had reservations about playing a cop during this time since it was the counter culture 60'S era and he was known for his rebellious persona , but he did take it on and of course added his own more introspective touch to it . the rest is history add to that you have one of cinema's best car chases .

The Sand Pebbles is a good one and it was McQUEEN'S only Oscar nomination for best actor , in it he is reunited with his Great Escape co-star Richard Attenborough

To think that Robert Duvall was delegated to such a small role! You have to look quick to catch him, but he's in there.
