Yay! Thanks so much for getting this posted. I know sometimes life gets in the way and you need a break. But it is so great when I get to do my Sunday DS9. Just what I need before facing a Monday! Thanks so much! And yeah... DS9. It's complicated. But one thing I like about DS9 is that a lot of the problems they focus on are relationship issues. Within species, as well as across species. Sisko and Jake: Human. Quark and Rom: Ferengi. Kira and Vedek Bareil: Bajoran. But we also see Trill/human in Sisko/Dax. We explore Klingon/Ferengi. Dukat and Garak - two VERY different Cardassians and how they interact with everybody. And on and on. In TNG it was too often "there is a technical problem with the theralux combonium chamber on a planet that protects it from the deadly photorad particles from its sun, and unless the Enterprise can solve it all animal life on the planet will lose their left foot and glow in the dark. Fortunately, Data has been working on a theory to solve such things, and Geordi is able to build a device using this that Riker can use to hose down the planet by precise shuttlecraft flight patterns. Yay! They all keep their left feet and can sleep in darkness. Closing credits. DS9 has a lot of "Yeah, I don't know about that ending. There was no good solution there." And THAT Is what mskes DS9 GREAT!

Jeremiah

Your DS9 theme is coming along very nicely! I love it when you follow a new section of the orchestra. It’s just 👏 so 👏 good 👏

Been waiting for this upload, I need me my Garak fix lol

alyssagynepuppy

This honestly one of the many Star Trek episodes where starfleet officers make very questionable decisions regarding the individual rights of civilians. It should absolutely be the childs decision where he wants to stay and the decision should especially not lie with a military officer.

Laura Thornley

This episode prompted me to buy a book just now - The Never Ending Sacrifice. It wasn't cheap, but it goes into more detail on this episode's topic (no spoilers, it cover a large time frame).

Nathan Cline

Generally, if you don't have a legit reason to withhold from the biological parents, the bio parents get precedent. Sometimes, if its been a long time, a compromise is worked out for shared parenting, but it would be very difficult on 2 different Star Systems

Tom Evans

Certainly a difficult moral question. In the real world I guess there would be some kind of transitionary period to let the child get used to his birth father, but that's not really possible in this scenario. I think it's safe to say Garak and Dukat are both important characters. Recurring characters like them (those who are not main characters but appear often) are a major strength of DS9. By the end of the show's run you could probably list at least 30 important characters like them. I like O'Brian's development in this episode. We've known he's prejudiced against "Cardies" since the TNG episode "The Wounded." In this episode they made him face that side of himself. And maybe Jen did, too! 😂

Christian Rennie

Garak is just a "simple" tailor....... riiiiiigggttttt.... Anyways, wtf happens to the other orphans? They all wanted to go home too.... you would think that someone would do something about them. Especially, now that the Federation knows about them. This is an interesting episode. I agree that this episode highlights some dubious decisions by the Federation. This was good back story for Garak and Dukat, too. All in all great story for character and world building.

Daniel

Cisko and Garak are by far my favorite characters in the Star Trek universe and both of them have some absolute bangers of episodes to come.

Vina

I love that book, it's probably the best Trek book I've ever read

Desmond

Yeah, being his biological father has a lot of weight in any legal decision on custody, on Earth or elsewhere.

Vina

Jen listening to Dukat: "I don't know if I believe him" - this will be a pattern lol

Summer

Not going to prognosticate on the next six years of the boy’s life

Sykonee

"Yeah, let's get Sisko and Garak in a room." Indeed. Shame we don't actually get to see that this episode. Oh well, maybe another time...

Sykonee

I think it was implied the reason the orphans weren't brought back to Cardassia was due to not knowing what family they could return to (if any). They would end up forgotten and homeless, the lowest class of citizens, possibly a worse fate than remaining on Bajor.

TigerMyth

About time the best DS9 character starts getting some screen time.

George Foot

Rewatching, I found myself wondering how Garak knew the name of the Bajoran who entered the file, and whether in fact he bribed her to give this evidence purely to further his own aims of discrediting Dukat.

TC Green

Garak episodes are always among my favorites. His first appearance was the second episode of season 1. This is only his second appearance.

jon bolton

For me Garak and Du Kat means a great episode.

Paul Peavler

We love Garak. We love to hate Dukat.

Patrick

The huge grin on Garak's face always gives me a warm feeling inside.

Zapp Rowsdower

Great episode, except the ending. I didn't like the "all or nothing" solution with the kid.

TigerMyth

I think under similar situation in most countries, the result would be the same. I bet even in Canada, the child would be returned to his blood relatives.

Bobby Coolbreeze

More Drama with the Cardassians! Solid episode as we see more of the relationship between the Cardassians and the Bajorans, another consequence of the occupation. I’m busting at the seams as I can’t wait for you to get further into the series! Will you do two episodes of DS9 a week once you finish TNG and then start with Voyager? And once you get up to it and then 1 and 1 of each show in air date order? I believe there is about a year between TNG ends and Voyager begins, and so DS9 runs solo for about a season! I also guess you will be doing the TNG movies also?

Matt Poppell

You know if Garak is in the episode, it’s going to be a great one. You get a taste of it here, but Andrew Robinson is an absolutely incredible actor. Even under the makeup, he still gives such a great performance even without saying a word.

Matt Poppell

Yeah, she indicated she will do by air date from here on out, with the caveat that she can take a break from Trek if she wishes, which is understandable. I want Jen to get into Voyager, but it’s definitely a long commitment to dig into another 7 season series. We can hope, but shouldn’t expect. 🤞🏼

Matt Poppell

Whose side is Dukat on? Not even he knows…

Chris Biebel

The most important thing you have to realize with Garak is that what he said at the end really does apply to him: "Truth, Doctor, is in the eye of the beholder. I never tell the truth because I don't believe there is such a thing." Heh heh heh... I think that Andrew Robinson REALLY enjoyed playing Garak...

jon bolton

He did. He once told me how much he loved the role at a convention. I had just complimented him on playing complicated or psychotic characters really well... I referred to obviously Garak, and his roles in Dirty Harry, Child's Play 3, and Hellraiser. In his autograph he included a Garak quote.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

"Will *one* runabout be enough? 🙄" I had forgotten about that one 😆 Done, I am completely done 😂

Ortizmo

This one lands differently with me now. i think this is possibly the third time I've seen it since its TV premiere when I was in my early 20's. I have since become the adoptive father to a boy now about to enter eighth grade. My wife and I have had him since his birth. I'd largely forgotten how this one ended and I guess I now would expect the boy's return to his homeworld to be more emotional, more tearful....perhaps some rage. I feel the ending was too easy and neatly wrapped up, but on the other hand I'm a little glad there was no emotional wringer to endure. I doubt I could handle it seeing as how my life turned out. I love my son more than life itself. I'd rather die than lose him.

Ortizmo

Or maybe we should just forget....the whole enterprise. ;o)

Gábor Árki

Not a year, just half a year. TNG ended in May 1994. DS9 returned with season 3 in September 1994. Generations came out in November 1994. Voyager premiered as a mid-season show in January 1995. For TNG and DS9, there is some value in watching them in release order. There are some minor connections in the shows, but mainly because the TNG movies were released during DS9's run and include references or mild spoilers. Or, more likely, people might chime in to explain things that only make full sense if you’ve seen DS9. That said, Voyager is largely self-contained and doesn’t overlap much with the other series, so watching DS9 and Voyager in release order doesn’t offer much benefit. The main thing to keep in mind is to save Nemesis until after Voyager is finished.

Bobby Coolbreeze

Yes you are correct. DS9 was half a season on its own. I watched most of TNG and all of DS9/Voyager first run back then. It’s been awhile since I’ve seen a lot of these episodes.

ROMAN.W

Yeah the ambiguity of DS9 is why it’s my favourite… also voyager is like that as well ..

Turnt SNACO

Both Gul'Dukat and Garak are amazing characters in their own ways, and beloved by fans. Garak has a particular unique charm that allures people though. Dukat is more just a really well written and complex sort of antagonist-type of character. Garak may also be one of those characters who may have been written without the expectation that he'd be as popular as he was.

ParallaxNick

I don't normally recommend Star Trek books (they are generally written by people not talented enough to write episodes) and I absolutely would not recommend you read it before finishing DS9, as it contains MAJOR spoilers for future plotlines, but there is a novel called "The Neverending Sacrifice" that follows Rugal after his arrival on Cardassia. Suffice to say, it makes clear Sisko made the wrong decision.

streaky

It's also entirely non-canon and there's absolutely no reason to believe that was the intent.

Summer

The dinner scene needs reframing, Keiko is seeing Rugal’s comfort zone not just shoving food and wants Miles to sit with the boy, its not the food its helping them grow

Tyrone Tyrone

You got to meet him👍And I thought I was the only one who remember how great he was in Dirty Harry. To paraphrase a very old saying, I'd like to shake the hand that shook the hand of Andrew Robinson.

Tyrone Tyrone

The poor treatment of the orphans on Bajor is proof that the Bajorans aren't as nice and spiritual as Major Kera claims they were and are. I agree with the decision by Sisko.

Tyrone Tyrone

The biggest flaw the show made with the Garak is that he's NOT a good dresser, in fact he's down right bad😖😄

Clay F

I agree with the ruling by Sisko. As emphasized in TNG S4 "The Wounded," O'Brien has his own biases and PTSD with respect to Cardassians.

C_Drew

OMG I just burst out laughing at your TNG storyline....that was HILARIOUS!!!
