2x7 Rules of Acquisition

*Watch-Along (no copy needed to sync) available! LINK BELOW

This week we get a Ferengi episode and a bit more depth to Quark. He's one of the most intriguing characters to me - I like him a lot but then he does do some shady stuff! There are many sides to him I think but he has a good heart. Looking forward to learning more about him as the show goes on. Engage! 🖖

Neill Shaughness

This is the first Quark episode that I straight up love. His immediate denial of the existence of the kiss will never not crack me up

William Rosmer

I think he was into Pel. He just wouldn't be able to admit it publicly in his society unless she pretends to be a typical Ferengi woman which is something she'd never do and it would damage what she saw in him if he asked it.

Laura Thornley

Deep down Quark has a heart. Its well hidden under his meagre pile of Latinum - but its there!

Summer

A more important episode than it might seem at first

Summer

Avoiding spoilers is hard 🫢

Banes

Quark might be my favorite character - and that's on a show with multiple great characters! He seems conflicted, maybe, about his world's values and his own developing values. This episode is great - well written too, with the Ferengi attitudes toward women being worked in right from the opening scene.

TC Green

The “bridge” on DS9 is called Operations or Ops for short

Opti_Frog

Small wonder the writers liked coming up with Ferengi stories when they could get Wallace Shawn saying their lines. 😊

Sykonee

How is it that Wallace Shawn can make a line like "Shame on you" the most hilarious scold ever? Quark definitely tries to be a Traditional Ferengi, but often butts up against dilemmas that challenge those warped sense of ethics, some of which don't always lead to greener pastures for himself. Probably from spending so much time surrounded by non-Ferengi cultures. Tends to rub off on ya', y'know?

Banes

Quark continues to be solidified as a character, but he was already pretty solid. I think this episode develops Dax a little better, even though she only has a couple of scenes.

Banes

That "shame on you!" line reading made me laugh out loud, even though I've seen this before xD

Desmond

You're never going to get all the Rules of Acquisition at once, Jen. They're better as a continuing source of amusement throughout the series. :P

rubberkidney

there just are not enough characters for me to truly like on this show. theres nothing like data, spock, bones, riker, picard, seven, the emh, tuvok, janeway their all like 2nd tier characters its like a ship full of neelix, i dont know i struggle with it because i want to like it.

Desmond

And yes, you have not heard the last of the Dominion...

Jeremiah

So glad you’re fully on board with the DS9 theme now. With your talent for music, I knew you would pick up on how amazing it is. It’s so perfect for this show.

ParallaxNick

I always wondered, given their attitude towards women, how Ferengi reacted to homosexuality. Would they see it as effeminate or masculine?

Neill Shaughness

Given how toxic their attitude on pretty much everything is, I expect they're homophobic on top of everything else. Their whole society seems like it was created for incels who listen to "manosphere" podcasts

ParallaxNick

For this episode in particular.

Neill Shaughness

That's a season 3 episode. Please don't spoil details about episodes she hasn't gotten to

scott osborne

there's that word every one that knows the dominion

Brett Whittaker

I wanna hear the Nagus say "INCONCEIVABLE!"

Opti_Frog

I know where you're coming from, because that's how i feel about Voyager. I think the DS9 crew is the best in all of Trek.

Zapp Rowsdower

I hate spoilers. I mean, I've seen the show, but Jen hasn't.

Ian

Please don't post details about details from future episodes Jen hasn't seen , spoilers really tick her off , do the decent thing and please remove this spoiler before Jen sees it

Summer

Thats the emoji I was looking for

Summer

Its hard enough to avoid spoilers here in a month when this goes to youtube the comments will be spoilers

Jeff Seely

I like the nuance with Quark in this one. He cares about Pel to the point where he's willing to stand up to the Grand Nagus to defend her (imagine standing up to Donald Trump to defend someone you care about), but at the same time, he can't turn his back on Ferengi tradition. The writers could've just had him be super progressive, but I'm glad they didn't go that route.

Julian San

This is how I think of Ferengi episodes of DS9: They’re like hated prerequisite courses for school. Boring and torturous at times but after graduation, you have all that knowledge.

Charles

Those red guys are really cool.

Lee

If this is your first viewing of DS9, stick around. None of the other shows' characters ever got close to the kind of development that the DS9 lineup will.

Laura Thornley

Learning the rules of acquisition is a long process - you'll keep learning new ones throughout Trek. There's a list somewhere that's still incomplete, and its very long indeed!

Alexis Vorian

The Dominion huh? Never heard of them.

Bobby Coolbreeze

For such a comical episode we get some foreshadowing of things to come. That’s all I’m gonna say.

Bobby Coolbreeze

As for the Ferengi culture pertaining to the women and other aspects of their culture, we will see and learn more! This is why DS9 is such a fascinating show, i feel they explore characters more than any other show. It’s set on a space station so they really can’t go nowhere compared to a starship so we get to see more character development and day to day life of the denizen’s of DS9. Really good episode, sets up a lot of different things going forward. Plus Ferengi episodes are always fun😂

Ian

Yeah spoilers are a constant pest , even removing spoilers doesn't help because they go to Jen to check if they are ok or not to be removed so she reads them anyway 🤷 so all we as mods can do is give her a heads-up , unfortunately its one of those things people are excited about what's to come and can't help themselves but fortunately the majority are good at not spoiling

Matt Poppell

This episode definitely sheds a little more light on Quark as a character. Overall, not my favorite ep, but a nice seed has been planted. Also, the “bridge” on DS9 is Operations, or Ops

ParallaxNick

Just like the Cardassians were modelled on Marc Alaimo, so the Dosai were basically a race made of Brian Thompson.

Kristin

Jen, I'm totally ok with you humming along with the theme or not. What I love is that you are starting to catch the nuances of the piece. As the show goes on and builds itself into a solid story, the theme will take on a even greater grandeur.

Paul Sophocleous

My comments, spoiler free... There is no list of all the Rules of Acquisition. They intentionally kept it vague so future writers could make up whatever was needed. The game they are playing is Tongo, which never had the rules laid down for the same reason. The beetle snuff is Hupyrion, the same species as Nagus Zek's servant Mai'hardu. I love that the cost price is LESS than 25% of what the Ferengi would sell it for. As others have said, the contol center for DS9 is called Ops, short for Operations. This is a good episode looking at Quark's character, as well as the way Ferengi treat women. Ferengi culture is explored quite a bit in future episodes as well.

Carlos Stevens

To quote Zapp Brannigan... "PEOPLE OF EARTH! shhhhhh."

Carlos Stevens

You keep using that word... but I do not think it means what you think it means.

Carlos Stevens

It's real easy to avoid spoilers... CLAMP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!

Paul Sophocleous

Given that one of the Rules of Aquisition is "Always have sex with the boss," and the boss and the subordin ate are always going to be male, I think Ferengi would be okay with homosexuality.

ParallaxNick

Tongo is basically poker on steroids.

Marcus Hicks

Oh Jen, I envy you seeing this show for the very first time.....and episodes like this one are a big part of why I am envious.

Zapp Rowsdower

Too often - and not just here - people seem to want to show what they know, and to wink to others in the comments who also know what's going to happen. Too many people being cute and quoting things to come or saying things like "bring your tissues" or "remember this name because later...". It's all irritating.

TheADHDOverlord

"The Dominion?.... Sounds Powerful. Maybe it is like the Mob" - Jen upon first hearing The Dominion's name.
