Is this the space global warming episode? I think when they made this there were like, 10 years left until complete climate collapse

Fanchman

It's been a long time since I've seen this one, and I remember it was related to climate change. It wasn't as good as I remembered. Maybe that's why I haven't seen it in 30 plus years.

Geoff S.

This problem they had was just for this section of space. It had a high percentage of particles that caused the problems.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I had forgotten that this was a Spot episode😆👍🖖 That shot of Geordie rolling in his chair with the camera follow is pretty cool. Nice to see him kicking butt in his own element, especially with all of his doubts this episode.

Edward korstanje

Maybe this episode was touching on the issue of how technology is affecting the environment over the long term. Like Climate change.

Jason Scade

I hope you're all doing well. 😄

Hendrix_44

Sometimes Star Trek touches on IRL issues in a subtle way that's actually entertaining while still making a point. This episode is not one of those times lol.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Just to make it expressly clear: Areas of high instability, no warp unless emergencies. Everywhere else, warp 5 max unless we get special dispensation from on high.

Summer

Best part is the cat

Summer

Next week is an interesting one

Rob Nichols

Even in Ferengi makeup, I can't see Lee Arenberg as anyone but the guy arguing with George over parking head first and calling Jerry a phony.

Opti_Frog

This is one of those socially conscious episodes that Trek does so well without being preachy or on-the-nose.

Joel

That's precisely what the intention was, yes.

rubberkidney

idk i feel ike they would be hitting some pretty crazy relatvistic effects, if you jumped to some mid warp and then coasted in real space...idk i dont think its just like throwing your car into neutral.

TC Green

Cats don’t have owners. They have staff. Data is a good member of the staff for Spot. Unlike those impossible fools Worf, Riker and LaForge.

Desmond

Yet did it in a clumsy manner.

Kevin Sommerfield

Still better than most of Seasons 1 and 2 though. Plus, at least by this point the writers understood who the characters were, which helps.

Sykonee

There's other episodes from this season that folks will point to as The Worst and whatnot, but for me, this one takes top spot on such a list. I'm always for 'slice of life' moments in Trek, but it felt like the first two acts was completely taken up by it, the Actual Plot not really kicking in until the 20m mark. Couple that with the lethargic pace S7 episodes seem to suffer from, and good Lord does 'Force Of Nature' drag. Then you get the actual 'man-made climate change bad' plot, which fair point, is valid, but delivered in the most ham-fisted way possible. Serova's solution to prove her theory was like someone blowing up a hydro dam to prove its causing ecological damage downstream.

Geoff S.

I for one love the Spot-centric stuff.

Kevin Sommerfield

I won't comment on what happens with this in the future, but I agree with a previous poster that this was a TNG "Climate Change Plot", and as such it doesn't really work that well on its own terms independent of that message. Never the less, they were trying.

RSK1995

The technobabble is why we generally love Star Trek so much compared to other sci-fi shows.

RSK1995

To answer your question about the rift the whole plot takes place in a very small sector of Federation space we’re talking about a few light years. Our Galaxy is over 200,000 light years in diameter so this sector is very tiny. Romulans and Cardassians use it for travel which indicates we’re at the border of Federation space. I’d say this rift would be inconsequential to other sectors in the Alpha Quadrant.

Struzzylive

I have been itching for her to see Parallels for months!

Desmond

Yeah, I agree with this, I'd much rather watch a random s7 episode than a random s1.

Desmond

You can't really "coast" in warp; you're either in it or not. And impulse engines max out around 0.25c to avoid time dilation.

rubberkidney

They did it in this very episode

Anthony Hernandez

I wonder if the spot storyline had to be shorter than a full proper B story due to some law regarding the number of hours a cat can work per day. It’s too bad because spot stole the show in this episode. He is clearly a method actor. He could have easily had more screen time. I’m not sure what the cat actor’s real name is (probably Stripe), but he was a cutie!

Anthony Hernandez

I think she recorded this pre-birth and the edited it after, but I’m not totally sure

Desmond

If they did, I'd chalk that up to careless writing. It happened from time to time.

rubberkidney

of course but its fun to think about.
