S07E15 Lower DecksThis week it's all about the junior officers and I love it! A fun episode but a surprisingly dark ending I wasn't expecting. Kane Is Able

This is the episode we had to keep quiet about, especially during The First Duty episode, but we have been waiting 7 seasons for you to get to it. This is definitely a top 10 if not top 5 episode for me. (I'm apparently a huge minority, but I do not like the Lower Decks cartoon. It doesn't work for me.)

Brad Shelton

I think the lower decks cartoon is amazing, though I am not sure how popular that opinion is. I would absolutely love your reaction to it if you find the interest.

Kristin

The Lower Decks animation is raunchy, and not the type of Trek I enjoy.

Banes

Great episode that gets my vote for biggest tear jerker in the series up to now. I've seen some of the Lower Decks cartoon - it's got lots of fun references and inside jokes for Star Trek fans. Far as I know, the title and the general idea was inspired by this episode, but not the specifics.

William Rosmer

The lower decks show is at best barely related to this episode. It is rick and morty lite plus a love letter to star trek. I absolutely want you watch it, but probably after voyager and the tng movies. Since its set after them.

Ian

I've heard only good things about this one so really looking forward to checking this out and enjoying Jen's intro theme along , gotta savour every one as well power towards the end . Make it so đŸ––đŸ”„

Brian Leonard

The Lower Decks series is great, but I always recommend watching Trek in release order.

PKHill

My apologies but I must disagree with your assessment of Lower Decks (the series). In TNG, Troi gets impregnated by an alien, Beverly has sex with a ghost, Picard has a relationship with a criminal, Tasha uses data as a literal boy toy, Geordi has a relationship with a holodeck creation and Riker brings back a virus that infects the entire crew after a sex romp on Risa; and you think Lower Decks is raunchy. (?) Fascinating.

Dylan

I always love when Jen drops a new Star Trek reaction and this is a great episode đŸ”„đŸ––

Patrick

Yeah Lower Decks is much more rewarding after going through DS9 and Voyager at least, and then there's Strange New Worlds but I'll stop there.

Fanchman

Jen, it shows that you are truly invested in Star Trek when you recognized Ensign Sito as soon as Captain Picard mentioned her record. I think you even indicated that she looked familiar from the start of the episode. I was really looking forward to your reaction to this episode. The writers did a great job making us so invested in these characters in one episode to make her death hit so hard.

Desmond

Exactly right. It's not directly connected, but the concept of "lower deckers", junior ranking officers who may not be important in the main plots, is inspired by this episode.

Desmond

I wouldn't call Lower Decks "raunchy"...it's definitely a bit more crude than classic Trek, but it's still pretty restrained with sex and nudity.

Curran Dobbs

The scene where lip-reading is brought up made me wonder if the universal translator works on lip movement. Also, puns wouldn't work on someone hearing you through a universal translator in a different language.

Thegonagle

Lower Decks (the series) is so much fun. It’s obvious how much fun the cast has making it, and it’s clear everyone involved loves Star Trek. They do make a lot of Voyager jokes (in addition to TNG, TOS, and DS9), so maybe you and your audience would enjoy it more after you’ve seen more of that series. From my personal point of view, I haven’t watched a lot of Voyager myself, but I didn’t let that stop me from enjoying the hell out of Lower Decks. If anything, Lower Decks makes me look forward to watching more Voyager once I get around to it. Jen, if you decide to do Voyager on your Patreon, I’ll be watching most of those episodes for the first time with you, as I’m doing presently with DS9.

Thegonagle

I don’t think SNW is a prerequisite for Lower Decks in the same way TOS, TNG, DS9, and Voyager are.

librarianist

💯 Lower Decks (the series) is probably one of my favorite things in Trekdom these days—though I'm woefully behind on Strange New Worlds. But I agree that it's best appreciated after watching most of the preceding series for additional context. (But I'm pretty impatient, so... đŸ€·)

Thegonagle

“I hope she doesn’t die.” Instant tears.

Vina

Breaks my heart every time

Vina

Lower Decks takes a few episodes to find itself but it has a lot of heart and by the final season the main characters are all really well-developed, three-dimensional people you come to care about

Robert da Spruce

I really like this episode! Although the ending is very sad It’s great to see the perspective of the junior officers though. Not just the viewpoint of the senior staff And I love how they brought Sito Jaxa back from the Starfleet academy episode

R. Chang

This is one of my absolute favorite episodes. Season 7 of TNG is basically them doing whatever they want. Taking big risks and doing kinds of stories they've never done before. The result is that sometimes you get candle sex-ghosts and sometimes you get The Lower Decks. As far as the show Lower Decks goes - it's mostly its own thing with the same basic concept - following the ensigns on board a starship. It's very good, though It think the first few episodes are a mixed bag where they try a little too hard to be edgy. It's probably one of the better "new" Trek shows. It's very reference heavy, so if you're planning on watching other Trek shows, I'd save it for later. But if you're not going to watch other Trek shows, it holds up by iteslf.

Matt Poppell

One of my favorite episodes. Shows the ship and crew from a different perspective and manages to get us invested in these character within the first 10-15 minutes. Fantastic writing and acting in this one. The Lower Decks show is incredible in its own right. The more DS9, Voyager, and TNG movies you’ve watched, the more references you’ll get, but it can honestly still be enjoyed after what you’ve watched of TNG and DS9 so far.

Summer

Lower decks is great, if you want more than Enterprise by the time you get to that it would be a shift in tone going back and forth

Geoff S.

When i worked at CBS I would only see temp clips of Lower Decks but some of the clips I saw were pretty good. The only thing I can really remember was a space slug of some kind. Or maybe that was Futurama.

Brian Straight

In "taking risks" there's a big leap between "grocery store romance novel with Fabio on the cover" and "See the ship from the POV of the lower ranked" for an episode.

Jason Scade

Lower Decks would be fun. The art work makes great picture postcards. ♄

Damon Corrigan

Yeah, this one is a good one. We all feel invested in these characters, and this one kind of yanks your heart out. But, as good as this one is, the next one is in my top 10 episodes of the series, and I am looking forward to it. So, just as we learned in The First Duty, life continues to go on even after death. Our heart still mourns, though.

Jeremy Nuss

Lower Decks Series is worth watching but only after DS9, VOY, ENT, and all the movies lol

Kane Is Able

THIS!!!!!! Honestly, I don't like Lower Decks, but I know the fandom is going to go crazy and convince her. I was yelled at and accused of "Gatekeeping" when I tried to convince the Gallifrey Girls of waiting to watch Lower Decks.

Jeremy Nuss

Well, it’s spoiler city

Paul Peavler

I would hope there aren’t very many people pushing to watch it before finishing the 90s shows. I agree it makes absolutely no sense to do it. I have mixed feelings about Lower Decks, some things I love and some I don’t, but the good news is that if she does watch it, it won’t take long. Only 5 seasons of 10 30-minute episodes. Could knock it out in a few months at two hours of episodes per week.

Paul Peavler

It’s no spoilers to say that the show Lower Decks is only based on this episode in concept. The backstory is that the show’s creator, Mike McMahon (who worked on Rick and Morty and Solar Opposites before), was a big fan of TNG and a long time ago wrote an eighth season of the show as kind of a fan writing exercise. When he got popular from Rick and Morty, he ended up publishing the scripts on Twitter if I remember correctly, as kind of a fun little thing. Then the Star Trek creators reached out to him to see if he wanted to do an animated Star Trek show, and his pitch was to make a show based on this episode’s concept. The main characters are all ensigns, not senior crew. And the ship isn’t the Enterprise, it’s not a big important combat or exploration vessel, it’s a basic “blue collar” ship, supporting other ships or cleaning up after them or transporting stuff around Federation planets, etc. But it’s not like any of the characters or plot come from this episode.

Julian San

This episode is definitely Gut Punch City.

jon bolton

This has always been one of my favourite 5 episodes of TNG, but seeing it again just now, it has topped The Next Phase, and is my current favourite. I know this sounds wussy, but it's one of the few episodes that always brings tears to my eyes towards the end when Picard announces Sito's death.

jon bolton

One day i hope you choose to watch the series, Lower Decks. I'm certain that you'll love that as much as i do.

Julian Meeks-Wagner

Lower Decks is a fun watch but I would finish at least TNG and DS9 before watching it

scott osborne

im a week behind i had to pause watching cause of netflix no now on tuseday i have almost 4hrs of trek to watch and a film to watch and probably some IT crowd if you have it posted by then or if you put it off but most of all how are you and your little angel doing

jon bolton

And the show is hilarious!

jon bolton

To be fair re Gallifrey Girls, one of them hates DS9 god knows why after watching 6 Seasons, and the other has never seen it. At least they like Lower Decks. I know this is a very controversial opinion, for years DS9 has been my favourite, until i saw Picard.

Brian Moore

I'm definitely down for all Trek you do in release order. I just enjoy it all.

Chris Moe

In my head canon, they asked Ro first and she told them to f. themselves. That said ...the ending is really sad...

Clay F

I prefer Voyager over Lower Decks.

Lee R.

She would need to watch Voyager before Lower Decks anyway to catch all the references

Clay F

One of my favorite episodes of S7. Sito is a good character. I did get thrown for a loop a little temporarily with Picard's technique of assessing Sito. I like your observation about the two poker games in parallel -- agree done well. I thought the episode well acted. "She just hooked up with a ghost." I skipped that episode.

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

Yes, I really recommend you check out Star Trek: Lower Decks at some point. The whole show was inspired by the TNG episode "Lower Decks," and you'll definitely appreciate it more if you've seen the older shows first—TNG, DS9, Voyager, the TNG movies, and even Enterprise (yeah it's a prequel to the original series, but still worth watching). At this point, you're already pretty invested in Trek, and honestly, I don't want you to stop. I've been watching for nearly 40 years, and the more you dive in, the more rewarding it gets. If I were you, I'd start working through all of them—or at least everything from the TNG era. Lower Decks is a must, but also Prodigy (another animated Trek that's way better than people expect). I'd even go back and watch Star Trek: The Animated Series from the 1970s—it's short (22 episodes, 20–30 minutes each), a direct continuation of the original series, and Lower Decks throws in some fun nods to it. Then you've got Lower Decks itself (50 episodes across 5 seasons) and Prodigy (40 episodes over 2 seasons so far—we're all hoping for a third). Both are amazing in their own way, and of course, Picard is essential too. Lower Decks especially has become one of the best modern Trek shows. It's packed with references and in-jokes for us longtime fans eat up, but it's also heartfelt, emotional, and a love letter to the franchise. I was sad to see it wrap up after just 5 seasons this past December because so many of us wanted it to keep going. And going back to the original TNG episode "Lower Decks"—man, that one still hits me. Ensign Sito's death broke my heart. She was my favorite Lower Deck officer, her story, and this episode alone is exactly why it inspired such a brilliant show later on.

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

I've watched and genuinely enjoyed every version of Star Trek since TNG first came out—even the ones that get a ton of hate like Discovery which has been the most diverse Trek of them all and Enterprise for being a prequel, looking more technologically advanced than the original series, and its theme. Lol. Not every fan loves every show or movie, and that's fine—everyone's got their favorite. Mine will always be TNG (with Picard now tied to it), with DS9 a close second alongside the original series. But fans like me who actually enjoy all of it? That feels rare. Sure, I love some more than others, but none of them have ever really disappointed me. And yes I love Lower Decks and Prodigy. I love me some animated Trek, which includes the animated series from the 70s. What I love most about Trek as a whole is how it keeps expanding—different crews, different eras, different perspectives. It's never just about one ship or one timeline. And yeah, not every episode or movie is perfect (looking at you, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier—though I don't hate it, lol). And honestly, I think people were way too harsh on Star Trek: Section 31 and even Star Trek: The Motion Picture back in the day. But that's the thing—Trek has always been about the bigger journey. Every corner of it adds something to the universe, and I love being along for the ride.

Sykonee

Another S7 episode that has that 'Family Theme' going for it, but instead of some newly revealed relative, it's taking the idea of the Enterprise crew as a family unto itself - junior officers the kids of the ship, senior officers the stern parents and experienced older siblings guiding them along.

Kristin

This is one of the saddest, and also one of the best episodes of the series. The actress really sells it. I think Picard's respect for her makes even more impactful. I also liked the the operative's reason for working with star fleet. Also, I personally think there a few other Trek shows, and other sci-fi shows worth checking out before you watch the animation.

Kristin

The crude nature of the show, the explicitness of the sexual encounters, not that they happen. I just like my star trek to be more PG.

Desmond

Lower Decks is best watched after a full viewing of TNG, DS9, and Voyager, IMO. So, so many references, and so much humor that is really only funny if you're already a Trekker. That's when the show is at its best, poking fun at the franchise and its quirks, but in a way that is always respectful.

Bobby Coolbreeze

We met Ensign Sito in the episode the first duty where Wesley and his team were expelled involving the cadet who killed in the flight accident

Bobby Coolbreeze

If you watch Lower decks you would want to finish all the series first as they would have some spoilers of the previous shows.

Brandon Leffew

R.I.P. to Patti Yasutake (Alyssa Ogawa) 08/05/2025.

Brandon Leffew

They did originally want the character of Ro to be on DS9. When Michelle Forbes declined, they created the character of Kira Nerys for Nana Visitor.

Summer

This was such a good star trek week, and another example why we are here, Jen trying to understand Worf during the training and help Sito, seeing Worf being a great leader with crew that respects him, this was just great

RSK1995

Please finish DS9 and Voyager before reacting to Lower Decks so you wouldn't miss all the references

Clay F

I think Jen realized that during the reaction.

Nathan Cline

I love the Animated Lower Decks. Agree with everyone else that Voyager and Enterprise both add to the enjoyment of the animated show. Enterprise and Lower Decks are both spectacular shows. Voyager to me was a bit dissapointing in terms of characters but does have some really good stories.

Clyde Frog

This is easily a top 5 episode of TNG for me personally. In fact, before I shipped off to boot camp in 2009, my wife and family got together to watch some stuff with me before I left. I chose to watch Lower Decks, and Data's Day for my TNG choices. The others were episodes of Flight of the Conchords which were big at the time, and hysterically funny. Anyways, this episode is close to my heart for that reason, and the ending always makes me tear up.

Clyde Frog

Enterprise is fantastic, and underrated even for Star Trek. Voyager does struggle at times, but i do agree that it contains some of the most brilliant single episode ideas in any Star Trek show.

Over50Gamer

Hear, hear! ❀

Laura Thornley

Lower Decks the series is only similar to this episode in that it focuses on the lower ranked officers. And it is glorious in its own unique way.

scott osborne

watching lower decks will do you good it will make you laugh and go eewww but it will put a smile on your face ok all 4 treks watched and caught up on this episode makes me sad too

Ron

Jen, I'm no fan of modern Star Trek (which I define as any Trek produced after Enterprise), but I'd be interested in your take on Lower Decks. It's not exactly my cup of tea (to put it mildly), but I might give it another go to see how far I get.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

There's a reason this one is so beloved by the fanbase. Stone cold S tier, what else is there to say. Using the junior crew as deep dive into ship operations and careers is so much fun and the dramatic storytelling is very well done, the whole thing is just really enjoyable. None of that is any sort of earth shattering analysis or anything but the episode just nails it all so well that I always just appreciate it on a very fundamental sort of level. It's just an excellent 45 minutes of TV. Edit: I love when shows do things in a way that is out of context for the audience and us only knowing what the JV team knows is just really engaging.

Summer

The time has come for me to be a Voyager pest, you will love the characters, there is blank who is a blank you will like that, these two characters become friends, there is this character who stands for these things and there is this unique character

Summer

I also say no body no death

Summer

Making this a youtube edit will be so hard, this episode has no right being so good

TheADHDOverlord

The Lower Decks animated series is a Love Letter to Trekkies imo. It is My Comfort Star Trek. I have most likely watched that series more than any other trek tbh... and I have watched All the Trek.

John Sullivan

omg this is the best ep since Scottiy got wasted on Appletinis
