There’s no where else I’d rather be on a Friday than right here watching Star Trek with Jen šŸ”„šŸ––

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

You have to watch "The Snapper" (1993) and "The Van"(1996) starring OB himself šŸ˜‚

Ian

Always look forward to these Jen Friday trek episodes it's always a great time ahead because Jen is No1 for star trek and every video is top tier . Make it so šŸ––šŸ”„

Occasional spoilers in the guest star credits (best to avoid them) but the absolute biggest spoilers are in one or two of the opening credits while the theme music is playing (season premiere episodes).

Julian San

Btw I realized the guy who was in the box, the ā€œCooler Kingā€ was the same actor that showed Scotty to his quarters on the Enterprise-D in Relics.

Summer

Knew it would drop soon. This episode is good practice things are about to get real

HeWhoLooksSkyward

Alixus and her son are facing multiple charges of Kidnapping and Involuntary Manslaughter, at the very least. They'll be spending a few years in a Federation Penal Colony, I imagine.

Opti_Frog

I really like this episode. Alixus represents so many things i despise in real life, and they do a damn fine job portraying it. Alixus is anti-tech and anti-science. She favours "natural remedies" and alternative medicine, refusing to even consider actual medicine. She thinks barbaric punishments makes for a better society, and the language she uses is Cult 101. By the end of the episode, we see the true damage she's done to the people she forced to join her "community": Joseph, the "last convert," assumes the leadership role and instantly guilt-trips the others not to betray the cult by leaving.

TigerMyth

Once again would like to mention I LOVE the Friday night drops of Trek. I know you are Trekked out but you asked if you should watch Lower Deck. No watch Voyager. Lol. You need to experience a full time female Captain. Voyager also has the most disturbing episode of Trek in the Old School Trek. I haven't watched the new shows so I can't say if it is still the most disturbing.

Desmond

I always appreciate when they remind us that O'Brien is a veteran of the Cardassian war.

Collinson

Aww so cute you sing DS9 to your baby. I've never been a Trek guy so the don't know much about the other shows but fell in love with DS9 when I randomly stumbled across it as a teenager so I love these reactions.

Sykonee

Oh good, I'm not the only one who thought this might be another Robin Hood thing after that stinger. Also surprisingly, for an episode that had a such a brutal torture contraption, O'Brien *wasn't* made to suffer in it!

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Sisko is double tough, man. And I always enjoy any scenes between Dax and Kira, they have great chemistry and humour. Dax reminds me a little of Beverly, they both always seem to have this look on their faces like there's some joke that the rest of us aren't in on lol Hang on to your butts, as J would say, the back half of the season fucking slaps.

Star Trek Friday let’s gooo My only issue with this episode is that the core premise doesn’t really make sense for Star Trek. Like the whole point is that it’s a post-scarcity socialist utopia where people are free of wage slavery to pursue their passions and improve their communities. Gene Roddenberry was a h0rny hippie communist and wrote the Federation to be his idea of a utopia, and I’m supposed to believe that this woman couldn’t find a commune anywhere on earth to live like this? We just saw in S04 of TNG that Picard’s family operates a vineyard worked entirely by manual labor and his brother doesn’t own a replicator or eat replicated food, and he lives in the middle of France, literally near the capitol of the Federation. I mean, it’s just an allegory so whatever, still a solid episode. It just kinda bugs me because it’s like ma’am you are just running a SoCal commune I’m pretty sure that’s still legal in the 24th century you didn’t need to kidnap all these people.

Tom Evans

This episode has always stuck with me, I think because of the performance of Gail Strickland, the actress who plays Alixus. The halting, breathy way that she speaks makes her a great character actor for this role. Also Sisko defiantly walking out and putting himself back in the box is a big defining moment for his character.

Tom Evans

The problem is finding enough people to join her to form a community. Maybe people would be willing try out the lifestyle, live in her commune for a while and see what they think. But she's so obsessed and fundamentalist that she wanted a community who gives up technology forever with no looking back. The Federation utopia is built on technology, so she would need people willing to give up the utopia to live a hard life instead. I don't think many would sign up for that.

TigerMyth

the good news is that the folks will start using technology again. They weren't 100% in her anti-tech religion. They just couldn't use anything because of the field. So if Sisco was petty, he should send weekly reports of all of the new tech being added to the village. Replicators. Computers for the kids to learn from. Medical tech. All back to Starfleet grade luxury.

Clay F

+1 for Voyager

Noremac

If I found out there was some technologically more advanced society I was being kept from I'd leave my current life in a second!

Clay F

That's cool your baby likes a DS9 music lullaby. I would definitely leave that planet, no matter the community or how long I had been there, if meant my kid would have a less chance of dying young. Not in the top half of S2 episodes for me.

Banes

Yeah she had a very interesting way of speaking. It worked for the character.

Banes

The season is in...a little bit of a lull right now. Just for a couple more episodes - wonderful stuff ahead!

Zapp Rowsdower

Every time I see this episode, I find the cult leader infuriating. Just knowing there really are people like that, twisting words and using circular logic.

Summer

Just a note, DS9 loves curve balls and doing the unexpected

Summer

Its so great you hum this to the baby

Bobby Coolbreeze

There are prisons in the federation. She will get a fair trial but yeah she going to jail for manslaughter and her son is an accessory.

Zapp Rowsdower

Elaine from Seinfeld would say that cult leader has no grace, and hit her with her tennis racket.

When Alixa kept saying it was all for the community, I think back on what Picard said about those that say they do things "for the greater good" that woud be thought of as ethically atrocious: "The age-old cry of the oppressor." Any community built on a lie is not a community, it's a prison.

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

I've got some strong feelings and opinions on this one—but first off, it's a great DS9 episode (I've rewatched it plenty times) and credit to Gail Strickland, who played Alixus. She did a fantastic job… but wow, I absolutely hated that character and her whole philosophy. Anyone who's anti-technology, who thinks giving up science and progress is the "better" way to live? Hard pass from me. Big props to Sisko and O'Brien here, and I also loved the little moments between Kira and Jadzia Dax. This is the kind of Trek storytelling I live for. 😊 What I've always loved about Star Trek is that the Federation and Starfleet represent a utopia built on technology, exploration, socialist ideals, and big-picture philosophy—Gene Roddenberry's vision at its best. That's why Alixus' "community" never felt like a real community to me. It was built on lies and manipulation, forcing people into unnecessary hardship. That's not noble—it's a prison. Ethically, it's just wrong. I'm glad she faced justice and ended up in a Federation penal colony/prison, which that's what I believe where she ended up. And that whole quote of hers about humans becoming "fat, lazy, and dull"? Or that progress has cost us our "true power"? I couldn't disagree more. That's not evolution—that's just her projecting her own twisted worldview. Honestly, anyone who feels that way in real life too? Nah, miss me with that. Now don't get me wrong—I absolutely believe people should have the right to live however they want. If you want to go off-grid, live in the woods, farm your own food, and ditch technology, that's your choice and I respect it. But don't force that life on others. Personally, I can't go without technology—it makes my life not just easier but possible. I was born with a physical disability, cerebral palsy and a speech impediment, and tech is a lifeline for me. Internet, TV, movies, gaming, music, my phone, solar panels—these aren't luxuries to me, they’re essentials. So yeah, I'm more like Kara Zor-El—Supergirl—someone who thrives in an advanced, technological society, not a primitive one. That's where I feel at home. Lol. 😁

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

Yeah, she drove me absolutely crazy—but that's what made her such a great character. The kind you genuinely love to hate and just want to give a piece of your mind to. Lol. And sadly, there really are people like that in real life—twisting words, using circular logic, and convincing themselves they're right, like you said. I've known a few like that, and it's just as frustrating off-screen as it is on.

Lee

She essentially kidnapped every one of those people, diverting them to a world where she intended they would never leave. Alixus is one of DS9's top ten worst villains, and the fact that she was a Federation citizen to start with only makes her crimes more reprehensible.

John DiGiantomasso

Somehow - maybe it's because this is episodic with a neat bow at the end - but I always envision this as Picard/Geordi on the planet and Ryker/Data rescuing them. Can't you see Patrick Stewart going voluntarily back into the box? I wonder if it was originally written that way...

Marcus Hicks

Shadowplay offers up some intriguing foreshadowing at the end but, yeah, you're right. Definitely back to a more episodic format at the moment.
