Dylan

I always get excited when Jen drops a new Star Trek reaction, they’re so much fun to watch 🔥🖖

Ian

Friday trek uploads are the best thankyou Jen you're Vulcan awesome 🙌🔥🖖

Jen Murray

Lol been dropping these on Friday for a couple months now 😂

Brian Straight

To be "fair" the "science" she teaches is on the level these people are at, Renaissance era, they don't about molecules and elements yet.

HeWhoLooksSkyward

I imagine Data would have a difficult time sending someone to their death... especially Geordi. I mean, ignoring the time Lore was controlling him, of course. :D

Rob Nichols

I don't recall anything especially funny in this episode, but I always enjoy hearing you laugh so no hatred here.

Damon Corrigan

Great episode. Thank you so much. Now I want to know why the name Jaden is so traumatic for you? Was there a romance that went wrong? Or maybe a rival from school? So many fun stories could be spun from that, and now I am smiling thinking about them. No, it wasn't annoying in the slightest. Just enquiring minds want to know. :)

Summer

Jayden sounds too human for the alien colony to name him

rubberkidney

i must be stuck in some sort of temporal anomaly.

Summer

So glad Deanna is a Commander now, thankfully it wasn’t Kobiyashi maru. At this time Data and Geordi have remained LtCommanders, maybe they don’t want to take the test

Jen Murray

Unintentionally funny and maybe only funny to me 😂

john reed

jaden !!! a very 90s boys name wonder how many star trek fans named the sons jaden ?

Geoff S.

Henceforth you shall be called Jay-gen. Or Jenden. Whichever you prefer. I kept hoping they would say the name to see you laugh at it! Good times!

Sykonee

Man, no one does the 'Sad Walk Off Stage' like Geordie.

Walter Crockett

To clarify, yes Troi does technically outrank Data. Beverly has been a full Commander since the first Season. But Data is the 2nd officer on the ship (Third in Command) This episode did open a Pandora's box in the sense of why couldn't Data just take and pass that same Commanders test. This is never outright explained, but I always assumed that certain jobs on the ship require you to be a certain rank, Kind of what we observed in the Lower Decks episode when they were discussing promotions. There is a possibility that a second officer needs to be at least a LT. Commander and does not qualify for a promotion of higher rank in the command structure since it is not required for that position. Especially most of the time, but not always the first officer is a Full Commander. Only when or if the job positioned changed, AKA a promotion. Promotions in Starlet can be a Rank, or just Job position/ Responsibilities. Remember Miles O'Brien was promoted when he went to DS9, but he is not an officer, so his rank didn't change. (Chief Petty Officer) Beverly & Deana's jobs may not have that restriction because even though they are senior officers on the Flag Ship, and are bridge officers. They are not assigned in the Command Division, or have the position of 2nd officer like Data does. Remember Beverly was taking shifts on the bridge because she requested it, it is not part of her responsibilities as Chief Medical Officer.

Opti_Frog

Why did i not have any memory of this episode? It's excellent!

Desmond

I do get a kick out of Data teaching this pre-warp society the scientific method. Even memory loss can't stop Data from being Data.

Desmond

Really, this whole episode is very well written. That whole scene where Troi is trying to become a bridge officer and Riker is telling her she failed, so good.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I really like that shot of Troi from underneath the table and then the pan upwards as she figures out the solution to the engineering problem. Really good stuff

Bobby Coolbreeze

Wow another episode I haven’t watched in probably 30 plus years! This episode reminded me a bit of Frankenstein lol As far as rank Troi out ranks Data but Troi is still considered a medical officer as a counselor and is not technically in the chain of Command. Data is still Second Officer right below Riker and Picard. So in emergencies Both Crusher and Troi as commanders would outrank everyone else except senior officers if they were somehow not available or incapacitated like we saw in the episode Disaster.

Vina

I've always enjoyed this one, both the A and B story are really good. Data showing up the teacher is pretty funny, and the part where Gia says "Data. He was my friend too" always gets me 🥹 Also, I was a child in the 80s and teen in the 90s and had never heard the name Jaden outside of this episode until probably the 2000s, so it seemed like an unusual even alien enough name to me at the time without being too out there.

Clay F

Microscope. This is in the top half of S7 episodes for me. I like this episode. I probably couldn't pass that test without some serious training (conditioning). My favorite aspect of the episode is Data on the planet. Lower Decks episode is good (and sad).

Clay F

"Data. He was my friend too." I like that as you do - got to me some.

Summer

Without inappropriate spoilers in 3 episodes is Genesis in which there will be a brief jump scare of something akin to something Jen hates so be prepared to see something gross and scary briefly. That is all I will say on that for now

EmptyDice

The healer/scientist wasn't teaching "bad science" she was teaching the science of her time. She was actually very smart, what she was explaining about the 4 elements and how the wood contains all 4 is what our greatest scholars would have known before modern science, good on her to teach the children instead of gatekeeping the knowledge like our scholars did. You seemed to think that she was purposefully misdiagnosing and teaching wrong, when she was actually doing the best she could with the knowledge she had.

Clyde Frog

100% correct. Jen gets very defensive about that sort of thing sometimes lol

Banes

I only remembered this episode vaguely, and forgot all about Deanna's Command training. This one was pretty interesting.

Banes

Good heavens...I hate to even say it, but this episode is the first of the last ten episodes. I'm sad!

Joel

Yes, while Troi does now outrank Data, he is still 3rd in command of the ship as Chief Operations Officer

Matt Poppell

This is another good episode that is very well written. No apologies for finding something funny! Also got a kick out of watching you try and remember the word microscope. Happens to everyone!

Michael Tuffin

This episode was drew inspiration from the "Goiânia accident" that took place in Brazil in 1987. It is one of the few good S7 episodes and hardly fillee

Julian San

Every time Jen laughs at Data being called Jaden, it makes me laugh too 😂

Zapp Rowsdower

Troi being promoted to a higher rank than Data is crazy. Also, how comfortable would you be, going to see your councilor who is also your superior. Trust issues galore. Also, I realize she isn't telepathic, but I would think, with her empathic abilites, and her deep connection to Riker, that she might've caught on that he was testing her.

Julian San

This reminds me of Harry Kim never being promoted on Voyager because of their circumstances (only so many lieutenant positions available I remember them saying) or Tukok who despite being in Starfleet for decades including literal teaching positions, was still just a Lieutenant for the first few seasons.

Over50Gamer

All of the comments made me look up the name Jaden to see where it comes from. Evidently, it has its roots in Hebrew, but it's still a rare name, only gaining popularity in the 90's. However, there have been some semi-famous people in the 1970's with the name Jaden.

Brett Whittaker

Ok so I’ve always wondered A why data wasn’t an admiral or at least a captain? But B Deanna now outranks data BUT is his position on the ship second or now third officer?

Brett Whittaker

Btw the next episode can F right off I hate masks

Jen Murray

It's just SO 90's-2000's to me. IMO Sex and the City popularized the name 'Aiden' and then all of a sudden there were a million Aiden, Kayden, Jayden, Brayden

Michael B.

Yeah, I wouldn't be to dismissive of these people. On earth the concept of the classical elements (earth, water, air, fire and later aether) was the accepted scientific explantion for the composition of matter for more than 2,000 years. All the way from ancient Greece of 500 BC to the late Renaissance of the 1600s.

Over50Gamer

I getcha! 😊 Not saying anyone is wrong, I just think word etymology and name history is fascinating and I thought to look it up and share. I was surprised it wasn't used as much until recent years.

Chris Moe

I think it's probably as if Deanna is the head of her own department outside ship command and operations. Beverly is also commander in rank but head of medical. She only takes command of the ship in very rare exceptions. We also know that the head of stellar catography is a lt.com. but I doubt that he/she is in line for bridge command if no one higher ranking is available. ..under normal circumstances at least.

The Star Treker (aka Michael)

Always love your Trek reactions, Jen! Can't believe you're already down to just ten episodes left of TNG—wild. I had such a good time rewatching this one again. The whole story with Data landing on that alien planet, losing his memory, them calling him Jaden (which cracked me up since that name pops up in both Power Rangers and Stargate, two of my other favorite franchises), and accidentally making the pre-warp/Renaissance villagers sick with radiation poisoning—basically their version of Kryptonite. Lol. Then at the same time you've got Troi finally going through the bridge officer test to earn her Commander rank, which is basically her own Kobayashi Maru moment. Lol. Loved seeing both arcs play out side by side. 😊

Patrick

I love the later we get into TNG we get how much more the chemistry between Frakes and Marina Sirtis comes across. I really enjoyed the little trombone back and forth in his quarters.

Chrissonator

Yup, in order for Deanna to pass, she had to be able to give that impossible order.

AzureSolas

The purpose behind the science that teacher taught is that her understanding is based on the knowledge her people have at that level of development of their society. They appear to be wearing clothing that might indicate a time similar to our renaissance era, so her knowledge of things would have been similar to a more ancient time. It sounds crazy to us, but in her society she would’ve been respected as having the latest in scientific knowledge. Just like how bloodletting to cure illnesses was once considered state of the art medicine. As for the name Jayden😄, it doesn’t work for Data but I ended up using that name for my son in the Stardew Valley video game because of this episode.😁
