Ian

Friday trek with Jen a ferengin wonderful time . make it so 🖖

Summer

A sweet episode

Summer

Yes she was the girl in Imaginary Friend, you also caught the device beingg the issue, not everyone would

Rob Nichols

Guest star Kenneth Tobey was Capt. Hendry in The Thing From Another World. And other guest Kenneth Mars was in The Producers which you need to watch.

Squeesher

This poor little girl! First she has an alien pretend to be her imaginary friend in TNG, now she's somehow become a hologram in DS9! This "little girl" (Noley Thornton) is now 41 btw, but hasn't acted since 1996.

Summer

Miles didn’t go through the academy but he enlisted for basic training, but he has enough experience to be a warrant officer in spite of never going to the academy. My dad and stepdad were enlisted Air Force, joining is similar but training and position different. He gives good advice here, we saw him play cello in TNG of course. Now did you try to memorize the isoliniar rods?

Summer

Who knew Odo was so good with kids?

Sykonee

The super-rare A-B-C Story Episode! And for simpler, slice-of-life stuff like this, quite appropriate. Like 'Rivals', perhaps not the most riveting 45m of TV, but taken in the context of this series, rather enjoy having a 'breather' from the heavier stuff DS9 often does.

I had a choice of 2 to watch right now (Masks will have to wait until Sunday). I'm going away for a romantic night in a fancy hotel with my girlfriend tomorrow, so only got time for the one because of an early start, and it's been years since i last watched this Dax/Odo one. (Edit) after watching i realise it's more Odo than a joint one, and also i loved it mucn more than i thought.

Desmond

Yeah, O'Brien wouldn't have gone to the Academy. He's enlisted but the most appropriate way to understand his rank at this point would be an NCO, or non-commissioned officer.

jon bolton

I love to see the interaction between Kira and Julian in any shared scenes at about this era knowing how close the actors were becoming.

Matt Poppell

Another good episode, that definitely plants some seeds. O’Brien enlisted, so he didn’t go through the academy like officers do. That’s why his “rank” so to speak is Chief instead of the officer progression starting at ensign. And the girl in the episode was in TNG as the girl with the imaginary friend that kept getting her in trouble.

Vina

Ive always liked this one. It's interesting to me how in my lifetime this sort of questions - does their existence matter - went from a complete hypothetical to an actual question, with real people actually falling in love with (or thing theyre falling in love with) AI chatbots. Trek AI is meant to be much closer to if not true "human-like" intelligence, versus chatbots which are just fancy auto-complete. But people who are desperate for affection are seeking them for companionship.

Julian San

OMG he looked so familiar! I LOVE the original Thing from the 50s!

Julian San

I love all the Dominion references.

Summer

From here on many episodes are vital to the overall story and a few are very interesting character things. I have to wonder what you think Jake should be, I have ideas what directions I would have taken the character

Henchman Twenty1

Who knew at the time where that would lead to off camera? 💒

Ian

Really enjoyed the opening scene with Dax and odo a duo up to this point we haven't seen much of and this interaction was fun so hopefully we get more of them together in the future. For me I'd think of that community as real , 30yrs amongst them regardless of them being holograms or real it's like in castaway tom hanks character seeing a ball as a friend , to him Wilson was real and in this town it's a similar situation. We perceive things how we perceive them as long as it's real to oneself that's all that matters . Loved odo morphing for the girl at the end that was a lovely touch . Really enjoyed this on cheers Jen 🖖

I've always liked this episode, nothing earthshattering but very warm and wholesome all around. If you thought a village full of holograms was interesting, Jen, wait 'till you see the Doctor on ST: Voyager. You'll love him, one of the best characters on that show. As for Jake, I think what happened to his mom probably played a part in him not wanting to be in Starfleet. He does end up taking a different path but turns out just fine. I won't say any more than that, though.

Bobby Coolbreeze

This was a very interesting episode Very Philosophical and very much in the spirit of Star Trek. We will ask the question in the future of what holographic beings are! The sub plot of why the village is there is fascinating! Who are the Dominion? 🤔

Summer

And there is no way he would say that bluntly to his dad if he even realizes it

Jeff Seely

What I tend to think about holodeck or holosuite characters is that they generally are NOT sentient. I think they're normally made to adhere to a limited set of actions and dialogue, like an NPC in a video game. But they obviously CAN be sentient as we've seen with Moriarty, and I think the old man in this episode made the villagers sentient by creating them with minds of their own and personal agency.

Summer

I don’t think Moriarty was really sentient, he just had knowledge and thought he was, we never truly saw any proof

Don Carroll

Did anyone recognize Kenneth Tobey playing the grandfather ? He was the Air Force captain in 'The Thing"

Carlos Stevens

Oh Lordy.. You don't understand child. Chief O'Brian is a Warrant Officer. It's kind of in the middle between an Officer and an Enlisted. It is very very hard to become a Warrant Officer.

Clay F

I like that the episode raises the recurring discussion in Trek of what is life. Interesting questions. I wondered how the pogramming provided for holograms to become pregnant (and give birth) and to age. A good Odo episode. The Kira romance was a nice aspect. I like that guy. His talking at the onset of the embrace seemed out of place (a distraction). Sisco is a good dad. Sisco was always my No. 1 character of DS9 -- the best I can remember.

Fanchman

I'm sure it is too late, and Jen probably already read your comment, but please edit out the information about future characters. Let her discover them on her own.

Paul Sophocleous

Of course, the question is, what test can you do to determine sentience?

Michael Rosati

Not sure what it was about the Miles/Jake conversation that had you confused and thinking O'Brien went to the Academy? "I went into town and signed up for Starfleet." In the US, and elsewhere too I imagine, recruiting centers are pretty common in most mid-size and large towns and cities. O'Brien is an enlisted man. And now his rank is Senior Chief Specialist, a non-commissioned officer. Very distinct from the Captains and Commanders and Lieutenants and Ensigns we've come to know - those are the commissioned officers who all did go to the Academy. If you look at the US Navy, which is pretty much the model for Starfleet (and in which Gene Roddenberry served), O'Brien's rank would probably be Senior Chief Petty Officer (E-8), the second highest enlisted rank, among the top 4% of the enlisted force. Unfortunately we don't get a lot of insight through the shows into how Starfleet works for enlisted personnel, as all the rest of our regular characters are commissioned officers. Now and again, we hear someone being called "Crewman" (which would be like the Navy's "Seaman", a low-ranking enlistee) but that's really it.
