Thanks for always entertaining us with your Star Trek reactions Jen, no one does them better than you 🔥🖖

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

Did you know Garak was played by Andrew Robinson aka Scorpio from Dirty Harry?? 😄

Vina

An absolute fantastic episode and now we can share "especially the [x]" memes with you!

William Rosmer

it's not just the station being drafty, cardassians prefer a higher temperature than humans. it was mentioned in a throw away line back in the pilot i think or at least they left the station at a high temperature and obrien was having trouble changing it.

Curran Dobbs

"It's set in the future", Cardassian science-fiction!

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

"That's just how he is." Top tier in S2, certainly. But, like, just straight up top tier. Andrew Robinson knocks it out of the park.

Shannon Johnson

Garak is my favorite character in all of Star Trek. His story is only just beginning.

Curran Dobbs

I think him complaining a bit more than usual might be a subtle sign of the malfunctioning implant.

Guy Gordon

Garak is easily my favorite character in all of Trek.

Leanna

Been waiting for this one! I haven't seen it in years so can't wait to watch again.

Paul Peavler

Look it may be the devils lettuce at work, but I am smiling and laughing so hard seeing Jen fall in love and become fascinated with DS9 and the characters. I feel like she was a little trepidatious at first, which was understandable given the shift in tone and feel compared to TNG. But it seems like the last several weeks have really started to open things up and it’s cool to see.

Banes

Especially the lies! I don't know if there's any way of knowing what's true and what's not with Garak judging from what we've seen so far. But this episode is excellent and a great rewatch like you said. I guess I would assume that there WAS some kind of scandal and Garak was exiled. What exactly happened...who knows! I don't know if it's possible to unravel his web of half-truths, deception and misdirection. An intriguing tailor if there ever was one!

TigerMyth

This is the point when most people, not all, realize Garrick is the most compelling character on DS9. Maybe all of Trek. Sure Data has a lot going and there are plenty of interesting characters but Garrick's backstory and the actors delivery makes him more compelling for me. Just a reminder, he was the serial killer in Dirty Harry. He has very emotive eyes. Even under all the makeup it is easy to recognize those crazy eyes from Dirty Harry.

Paul Peavler

Yeah if I remember correctly the standard setting for them is like 34C or similar. Likewise the Borg standard temperature is like 39C. So assuming Starfleet keeps their ships at average human temps of today, like 21-24C, for Cardassians that’s like if we had to live and work in 10C spaces all the time. Yikes.

Squeesher

There it is, the episode that makes Garak's character take shape! Glad you enjoyed it! One tidbit, Enabran Tain was played by a famous comedian, Paul Dooley, who has too many credits to mention, tho this is the first time you're seeing him in Trek anyway. He's still around, 97 years young!

Chris Biebel

Of all the Trek shows, DS9 is definitely the one that makes you think of your own prejudices the most. The other ones tend to just act like The Federation is the best thing ever, while DS9 often shows how other races view The Federation and Star Fleet more than the other shows do.

Mike Embury

‘Makes me confront my own prejudices’… these are the words of someone who truly understands Star Trek.

Julian Meeks-Wagner

I can't wait for season 3 I think for both TNG and DS9 season 3 is where the show really hits it stride, I hope when the time comes, she starts watching VOY in airdate order too.

Sean Ellingham

I'd highly recommend the novel 'A Stitch in Time' if you want to know more about Garek - it's an 'autobiographical' novel written by Andrew Robinson (Garek himself) based on a backstory he created to inform his portrayal of the character. It's getting quite rare now from what I understand, so you might want to try and find a copy as soon as you can, however (and this is important), *you'll have to wait until DS9 is finished before reading it* - parts of it take place after the show ends, and there are other references to things which haven't happened yet in the show.

Laura Thornley

The book is nigh impossible to find these days, sadly - and I tried! But there is an audio book version at the very least, narrated by Andrew Robinson as well!

Laura Thornley

Alright, got around to watching now. And yes, Garak is quite the interesting character. Even for a Cardassian his way of thinking is so alien and evasive, and behind that smile his mind is always working on several things at once. He's the sort of man I'd never trust the words of, but have some cautious trust of his intentions - he's got a code, and you may not ever know what that code is but you have to respect it.

John DiGiantomasso

I was always uncomfortable with Garak. I did not know why - he just creeped me out. Then when I was watching your review of Dirty Harry - there he was! The psycho serial killer that took the kids hostage on the bus. Andrew Robinson is an incredibly gifted actor.

Julian San

Welp, I can’t add anything other than Tarkalian tea is mentioned throughout the show and gets as much screen time as Earl Grey 😂 ☕️

Over50Gamer

Commenting before watching because this is a fave episode! It explains a lot about Garak, his backstory and his love/hate relationship with Cardassia and its government.

Over50Gamer

He also played Larry, Kirsty's dad and Frank's brother, in the original Hellraiser movie.

Joel

Your instincts are dead on target, pay very close attention to Tain and everything about the Order

Lee

There is one bit of indisputable truth in the stories that Garak told Julian: the planet where Enabran Tain was living in "retirement." Without that key information, there would've been no saving Garak... not to mention, we wouldn't have met one of the major players in Cardassian intelligence. I always forget this is the first mention of the Obsidian Order, but there was no better episode to reveal it.

Over50Gamer

Oh, after watching this, Jen... I'm sure you realize now that the "Even the... Especially the..." popular meme came from this episode.

Nate Gavin

Garak is an excellent character because of his obvious intelligence and he is a fan favorite to many. And not to just the fans either, the writers obviously loved fleshing him out over the seasons. Even the other actors used to comment on his (originally) side character getting all the juicy lines. However, it was well deserved as Andrew is an amazing actor and he clearly got a kick out of portraying Garak too. Luckily DS9's storytelling did not get lazy and make Garak as a stand out character as the others will demonstrate equally fierce intelligence when dealing with treacherous situations in the seasons ahead. There are no easy wins and no easy answers in this universe. Thumbs up to the writers for this and to the actors for doing a great job in portraying their characters.

Tom Evans

I don't know if this has come up yet, but this episode has Bashir referencing "26 hour" and "52 hour" timeframes. This is because a full day on Bajor is 26 hours, so throughout DS9 whenever you would normally hear someone say 24 or 48 hours they say 26 or 52 instead.

Opti_Frog

DS9 is starting to show its true face, even if Garak isn't. This story and the way it was made could hardly take place on the Enterprise. It's basically only character development all the way through, for Bashir and Garak. There's not even a B-plot. And the only major victory in the episode is that Garak survives. It's absolutely amazing.

Summer

This is a good episode. It is good that the two last episodes of season 2 are after TNG ends. That will let you enjoy them more. Then comes Voyager which I know you will like

I would love for you to react to THE WIRE (2002) (5 seasons) (RT 94%. IMDb 9.3). “The Wire” is often considered one of the best (if not the best) TV series in history. Best TV Shows all time ranking = Rolling Stone #4, Hollywood Reporter #5. One of President Obama's favorite shows. CBS interview with President Obama. Interviewer: "Settle an office debate. Best 'Wire' character of all time?" Pres Obama: "It's got to be ****, right? I mean, that guy is unbelievable, right?" Pres Obama: "And that was one of the best shows of all time." Ranks up there with other iconic series. -The Wire. IMDb 9.3 -The Sopranos. IMDb 9.2 -Breaking Bad. IMDb 9.5 -Game of Thrones. IMDb 9.2 -Band of Brothers. IMDb 9.3 I like the acting, and how rich the series in exploring various issues with a different focus each season. Would love to see how you respond and hear your analysis.

Clay F

Great reaction. Thanks. In rewatching this episode, I had a similar response as you. Garak with his fictions. Elim is his freaking first name. As you, I like the way Bashir firmly handled Odo in a calm way. I don't really remember this episode. It's been 30+ years since I watched this episode (watched as it aired). I am very much enjoying rewatching DS9 along with your full reactions. My adult son is watching DS9 for the first time and just started S2, and will likely catch me.

Sykonee

Wild to think this is just the fourth episode to have Garak, and he gets something this meaty. As for the stories he tells and which ones were more truthful than others, its good to remember what this episode is really about: stages of addiction and recovery. If you view Garak's stories through these lenses... 1st Stage: Rejection of help - Garak tells a story of doing something so abhorrent, he figures Bashir will turn his back on him, leaving him to his fate. When he doesn't, that's when his recovery begins 2nd Stage: Emotional Detox - Pretty clear what scene this is, and probably the closest to The Truth we will get, Garak's barriers at their lowest 3rd Stage: Forgiveness & Affirmation - This feels more like Garak seeking validation for his actions that led to his exile, that even if 'Elim' said it was wrong and betrayed him for doing it (in this case, 'Elim' representing his old Caradassian way of thinking - of what a Good Cardassian should do for The Everlasting Sacrifice of the Empire), that someone, *anyone*, agreed that he still made the right choice in the end. /also, does this episode represent the most extreme examples of 'walk on scenes' by main cast members?

Summer

We cannot underplay Bashir referencing Keiko as Professor O’Brien

Nathan Cline

Its available digitally on Kindle , presently for $1.99

Please edit this to not show spoilers Jen's said countless times do not say anything about the episodes she hasn't seen

SetsunaYuki

Imagine going back in time and casually mentioning a world event that will happen the day before it happens. Have some chill.

scott osborne

shush no spoilers and what you said is a huge spoiler

scott osborne

garak is the most complex character in ds9

Wesley

I'd rather take a tour of DS9, because Bajor is only a shuttles ride away and its supposedly gorgeous. And yes, a thousand times yes you SHOULD watch The Wire. It's a flawless tv series. The actor who plays Garak said "Moments where he(Garak) is in great emotional distress, even at those moments you don't know if what he is saying is the truth or not. But you know that emotionally he is telling the truth." Something to think about on the rewatch.

Desmond

Waaaay too many spoilers Timin...

Bobby Coolbreeze

Garak is a wonderfully complex character. There is a truth in every lie and a lie in every truth lol The only thing we really know now at this point, he is a former operative in the Obsidian order and a very good one! There is so much more to unravel about Garak that we will see down the road. I do think that you will be pleased. 😉

Kristen

This comment is so rude after she has repeatedly and explicitly asked for no spoilers. Get out of here with this.

Patrick

Andrew Robinson is such a good actor. Never not giving it 100%.

ParallaxNick

SFDebris had a really cool take on what Garak meant by "believe the lies". His first story was intended to drive Bashir away by challenging his Federation empathy. When that didn't work, he tried the reverse, showing how much he loathed compassion. In his third story, he drops the location of Enabrin Tain so that Bashir can go to him for help. Thus he makes Bashir help him without asking him for help, and keeps himself out of his debt.

Desmond

To be fair, "lunch once a week" isn't THAT close... Also, please don't read TiminTN's comment below, someone has not taken the "no spoilers" rule to heart.

prot180

The Wire is fantastic, the episode and the show. One thing to note about Cardassians that is alluded to in their literature among other clues is their priorities. Family and the state.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I think I'd rather go for a tour or explore DS9. The Enterprise is an icon to be sure, but I suspect every single bit of square footage serves a specific purpose. DS9 would be more like urban exploring with all sorts of cargo bays and forgotten corridors, nooks and crannies etc to discover.

Carlos Stevens

Well, you have to admit. Cardassians are honest in their dishonesty.

Noremac

People don't judge each other according to morality, but by emotion. If a crocodile eats a smaller animal for sustenance, it is acting according to its own nature. and if a serial killer chops up some kids, they are acting according to their own. True open mindedness means acknowledging that everyone is the "hero" of their own story, but that doesn't change the fact that some people/beings repulse us.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

"Chief O'Brien. All the time, and I don't pay any attention to him either." What a great line 😆 I think Bashir is indeed kinda brash. He's also awkward in a way but it's that awkwardness that causes him to just not really give a fuck lol. Whether it's asking Jadzia out on a date in front of everyone back in Emissary or interrupting Sisko's conversation with Dukat in Cardassians or going to confront Tain in this one, he just says what he wants as J would say. Not in a hot-headed way like Kira but more honestly naive and innocent. It's very endearing.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Jen remains undefeated when it comes to counting in for syncing. 3, 2, 1, no 0 or Play but just the audible keyboard is perfect.

fallingupdownthere

Holy cow yes, please watch The Wire. IMO, the best tv series ever made and nothing else comes remotely close.

Summer

Vote on the request site everyone

Edward korstanje

Jen someone may have posted this already but the actor that plays Garak is the same actor that played the serial killer "Scorpio" in the movie "Dirty Harry" his voice is exactly the same.

Guy Incognito

You are drawing the right conclusions, Jen. There is some sad hidden truth among Garak's web of lies. It will make more sense a few seasons later. Some very great episodes are yet to come. You probably might want to rewatch the Garak (and Gul Dukat) episodes once you've seen all seaons of DS9. Some take aways without spoilers: Notice the comments on Cardassian literature. Look at how Garak describes Elim and himself and what he changed in his stories. What was Garak's motivation to turn on his implant? Is he always lying to keep up a facade or was he sometimes honest to Bashir in this episode? After seeing the discussion in the prison cell between Quark and the Vulcan lady in the last episode (and all Gul Dukat appearances), what do you think is the Cardassian morale code? What do you think is considered 'good' or 'bad' through the eyes of a 'typical' Cardassian?

Sleeper

You asked "can we trust Garik" I think the answer is both yes and no. If you expect to trust him the same way you could a Star Fleet Officer, you will be disappointed. But just like dealing with Quark, if you first understand them you can trust them to be who they are.

RSK1995

One of the best episodes of S2.

Tyrone Tyrone

I was like wtf she just randomly threw that out there.😄

Tyrone Tyrone

I definitely vote yes for watching the Wire, although you might not like it.

Tyrone Tyrone

I know one reactor who dropped it about 4 episodes into season 2.
