DS9 was very good the first two seasons, but from here on it's something else. Buckle up it's a hell of a ride.

Ciarra Jade

Love it! So excited we are at the dominion part of DS9 now 🥳🥳

Christopher Lamont Harris

Well Jen, you are definitely getting close to the Dominion, and I love checking out your reactions, all I can say is enjoy 😊

Matt O'Keefe

The destruction of the Odyssey always felt awful because it was a Galaxy Class ship. So they essentially destroyed the Enterprise.

Hok'Tar

Season 3 is far above season 2 and season 4 blows season 3 out of the water. Can't wait!!!

Geoff S.

Nice! Hope you're watching Game 7 Jen!

Ootlander

Now DS9 really pops off, enjoy the fun.

Joel

Season 3 incoming!!! :D

MattN

ngl I am very sad tng is over BUT I am very excited for ds9 season 3+

rubberkidney

we are still doing voyager right? cant miss out on voyager, one of the best themes, easily singable....

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

First real good look at Cardassian culture we've gotten so far. That scene of O'Brien being processed is fuckin' terrifying. Odo just said "Keiko, we should leave" without really asking Sisko's permission first, huh? Still kinda holds himself half a pip outside the command structure it seems.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Everyone hyping up S3. Heck, I've hyped up S3. But let's not sleep on S2, especially the back half. A good steady ramping up that was very enjoyable it's own self.

Tom Evans

She said last week that she's still deciding. Based on airdate order she wouldn't start Voyager for a couple months anyway, so she has time.

rubberkidney

i must have missed that. it would be sad for her to have sat through all of ds9 but not get to voyager. JEN my vote is voyager. looking on the list its right around the corner

Banes

The scene with Nog shouting orders at the computer is so good xD

Jen Murray

Guys I said in my weekly update post that I am going to watch all of DS9 and then consider Voyager. If the stories don't cross over I just prefer to focus on one show at a time

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

DS9 does such a great job of fleshing out the ST Universe. We learn so much about the species we've met, get introduced to new ones, shows us how they see us, we get more into Star Trek politics. It's so nice have this more micro view of this particular section of the galaxy, including the wormhole now of course.

Rob Nichols

The Vorta woman is played by Molly Hagan, she was the Latvian nun who left the church because of Kramer's "kavorka." The admiral commanding the Odyssey is played by Allan Oppenheimer, he was one of the elder Klingons in TNG S6 Rightful Heir. I remember him as one of three actors who played Dr. Rudy Wells in The Six Million Dollar Man.

Ian

Going to miss the weekly TNG but excited for our DS9 journey to continue , happy next Jen Sunday 🖖 hope to see you in the live chat later . Don't forget to visit the request site and get your new picks in and up vote the ones you like jenmurrayxo.com

Collinson

Oh man so excited for Season 3. I love the first two seasons of DS9 but season 3 really steps up a level.

Andrew Skow

Tribunal felt like watching todays news.

rubberkidney

sorry im not a famous reader of posts, most im good for is a skim at my best. either way. my vote is 100% on watching voyager, i was looking forward to it starting soon, but hopefully you will stick with it. unique premise, very singable intro broad and epic....i know you wanna...

Shannon Johnson

Enter the Dominion. As Jim Ross would say "Business has just picked up!"

Juan Pablo De La Fuente

Okay, Jen, you're making a big mistake as a Star Trek fan by not watching Voyager in the order it aired, along with DS9. The entire Maquis storyline was created to kick-start Voyager! Although it continues in DS9, in Voyager, it's a backbone of the story. DS9 is also mentioned a lot in Voyager. Believe me, it's not a waste of time. It will enrich your Trek fandom. Finally, I should tell you that many parts of the TNG movies will be spoilers for the series. I apologize if I've broken any of the rules about not mentioning plot details or storylines, but you MUST watch Voyager, please! You won't regret it. You'll feel like one of us in the '90s! In the golden age of Star Trek. Kisses, hugs, and lots of love from Argentina!

rubberkidney

thank you. its good to not be the only person desperately waiting for voyager, tng is great but they had the process figured out by voyager, great crew, great premise, great theme...cant be missed.

Geoff S.

I have read that about 12-13 Galaxy Class ships were built. The Yamato was the first one of its class destroyed I believe in season 2 of TNG. There is also the Nebula Class ships that have the same saucer section as the Galaxy class but without the same connecting dorsal section. It can also carry mission specific interchangeable pods on the top rear of the saucer section. They're one of my favorite designs in ST.

Rob Nichols

I'm with Jen on this. The stories don't really cross over, there are a few minor references but they're about as significant as the "it's green" joke. And doing two DS9's per week she can finish it twice as fast.

William Rosmer

sisko's actor apparently bonded with jake's actor a lot off set too, taking him to basketball games and such.

Matt O'Keefe

Season 3 will bring new & exciting elements to this show Jen. Including something you have been asking about and for awhile now. You are about to get it.

William Rosmer

I'm pretty sure the creators have said that was why they did it. They symbolically destroyed the Enterprise to up the stakes.

William Rosmer

I love the fact that the Dominion is first mentioned in a light hearted Ferengi episode.

Sykonee

Yeah, DS9 season finales weren't so much about dropping cliffhangers, but doing something to shake up the status-quo, launching into new avenues for future stories to be told. I've always admired the contrast of antagonists between these two episodes. First we dive deeper into the world of one of the show's primary ones, then get thrust face-first into meeting a whole new menace, making the Cardassians' antics seem almost quaint.

Summer

Tribunal is one of my faves, Keiko is great in this one , Keiko knew the communication system, the Enterprise is one of the ships that wene to the border

Summer

Quark should ask a Ferengi woman about that. Glad you finished the season this week next week is big

Walter Crockett

It Begins! Jen so excited that you are going to watch DS9 till the end before Voyager. Also to answer your questions, not only is "The Jem'hadar" one of my favorite DS9 episodes, it's one of my all time favorite Star Trek episodes.

Gábor Árki

Well, I guess that is kind of true. If someone goes on vacation in Star Trek, you can bet something bad is bound to happen to them, or at the very least, they will end up in some unexpected adventure. While I think S2 of DS9 has a few rough spots, it is also the point where the show really starts to find its own voice. The writers begin to take advantage of the stationary setting (pun intended), weaving in more serialized storytelling that builds on previous episodes. Recurring characters become more and more prominent and are given real depth, developing into complex, multidimensional figures. Unlike TNG, where recurring characters felt more like special guest appearances, DS9 makes them an integral part of the narrative. And then the season finale is resetting the entire board. The Dominion, of which we have heard whispers for a while now, proves itself to be a formidable new threat that already gathered a ton of valuable intelligence about the Alpha quadrant. While I always understood that destroying the Odyssey was meant to show that even a starship as powerful as the Enterprise would not be able to stand against them, but only now did I realize the true symbolism of its timing, having destroyed this ship right after TNG ended. I'm really excited and looking forward to the season 3 reactions.

Summer

The biggest issue with waiting until DS9 is over is the timing, since it starts in DS9 season three there could be one moment of temporal whiplash but it will be ok, I saw Voyager before DS9 and even before some TNG. Definitely watch it before the last TNG film but it should be ok as long as we all remember the start is almost here. That is the only reason really. After blank and blank the timeline issue is less important

Summer

Nog was rather annoyed by Quark….wonder if he wanted to spend time with Sisko too…..one might also note, two suggestions made to Sisko should have been followed, teaching Jake to fly a runabout and stopping by new Bajor on the way

Lintrinsic

I agree, I think abandoning airdate order is a mistake. Voyager was the show designed to fill the hole left by TNG as DS9 was considered "the Trek that doesn't Trek". It's also been getting attention recently as it's the 30th anniversary year and a new Voyager game is coming out. My YouTube feed has been popping up Voyager content consistently more than any other Trek for months. Leaving it dangling in the balance risks alienating Voyager fans. Niners may be more vocal, they've had to fight their corner longer but Jen's own polling indicates how popular Voyager is. There will also be more competition in a year and a quarter as other reaction channels will reach it in the meantime.

Lintrinsic

It's certainly has overlaps more significant than "it's green" especially if you include the movies. While the DS9 fans might get to see it faster, there'll be no gain in Voyager fans on patreon to offset the purist TNG fans that will leave. And less incentive for Voyager fans already here to stick around and wait.

Matt Poppell

I think that is more than fair to focus on one at a time. Especially for the way DS9 is written, watching it by itself is a good call. There is nothing about Voyager that DS9 would spoil, so there’s no harm in watching one at a time.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

The in-universe reason to pick on O'Brien is that his involvement in the Cardassian border wars makesv it easier to sell the idea that he was Maquis, or at least sympathetic. The outside the universe reason is that as probably the gentlest and most relatable character it's easiest for the audience to become invested and makes it seem even harsher. So no matter how you look at it it was always gonna be OB that ended up in that position😬

jon bolton

Two fantastic episodes, i'm glad you loved them too. I've been looking forward to seeing your reaction to both of these.

Bobby Coolbreeze

It’s pedal to the metal from here on in! We start to see some significant changes starting next season with the introduction of the Dominion. Lots of surprises are in store! As far as tribunal it was an ok episode as we get more Cardassian and Maquis stuff. Can’t wait for Next weeks season 3 premiere! Buckle up!

Bobby Coolbreeze

Some trivia on using a galaxy class ship in this episode like the Enterprise. I believe early in scripts they were going to bring the Enterprise in for this finale but obviously they could not destroy an iconic ship and kill off Picard and the crew. The idea was have a similar powerful ship like the Odyssey be bought down by the Dominion to make a point of how powerful and fearsome they are.

Bammer

As Scotty once said... "Hold on tight, lassie. It gets bumpy from here."

scott osborne

Eris is a member of a race called Vorta agents of the Dominion and slaves to the Founders

TheADHDOverlord

DS9 can Officially start now that The Dominion has taken the Stage.

Noremac

I haven't seen DS9 before, so I've been pleasantly surprised by the upturn in quality during the second half of season 2. The finale was pretty good. The plot being about a field trip that slides into the start of a multi-race war against a technologically superior enemy was surprising. But the episode fails in that the Quark/Sisko dynamic didn't go anywhere and was completely forgotten in light of the Dominion stuff. Regardless it's exciting potential for season 3.

Curran Dobbs

Also, the Cardassians wanted to discredit Starfleet so going after Kira wouldn't have worked as well. O'Brien also had a history of anti-Cardassian racism.

Michael Tuffin

The season finale is an important episode; it’s sudden and irrevocable tone shift during the lsecons half defines what DS9 becomes from here forward.

Chris Biebel

I just realized while watching it this time that the defense attorney for O'Brien was played by one of the actors who was in the Twilight Zone episode "The Obsolete Man." You said that the Jem'Hadar were knocked down fairly easily. Remember that they let Sisco and Co. escape. You haven't necessarily seen how they are physically yet. Just for the record, regarding The Dominion, you actually don't know how powerful they are... 😉 BTW, when this aired I recognized the Dominion woman (Molly Hagan) from a TV sitcom called "Herman's Head" that ran for 3 years that showed, as it's premise, the idea that you had 4 different aspects of your brain (Lust, Anxiety, Intellect, and Sensitivity) and they were played by 4 characters (Hagan played "Sensitivity"). It was kind of like a live action "Inside Out" that was on TV in the early 1990s.

Zapp Rowsdower

It might have just been a slip of the tongue, but in case you don't know, the Jem'Hadar are the soldiers, like the one who broke out of Kira's containment field. The lady is a Vorta. Both are part of the Dominion and you'll learn more about them as you go.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I was going to make my own comment about how satisfying it was to see Keiko at the controls, even if it was just comms. She seemed about as calm and capable as one would expect her to be as a civilian.

Summer

I think TNG with episodes like Power play and Rascals pictured Keiko coming from a starfleet family, and almost starfleet in her manner for a civilian. Sometimes DS9 pulls that out too. Always liked Rosalind Chao as an actress especially as Keiko.

Matt Poppell

The idea of having a ship that looked exactly like the Enterprise was very intentional by the writers. They stated afterwards that they wanted to destroy ship everyone just watched for 7 years (albeit a different name) to pack a punch for viewers and show the Dominion’s strength.

Zapp Rowsdower

Yep. That's exactly what I thought of when I saw the trailer for "Inside Out". I think I even shouted out "Herman's Head" lol

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Might be one of the best Sisko episodes yet. Certainly his most charismatic. I love all of Sisko/AB's little chuckles and wheeees and woooos he does whenever the character is amused about something. Part of that same charisma that made Mirror Sisko so fun back in Crossover. Certainly one of the best eps for Jake and Nog also. Nog's character really starting to take on his own personality now also.

Matt O'Keefe

Sisko's actor: Avery Brooks is an interesting person in interviews.

Fanchman

Again, some people feel they need to provide information about the new characters. How about we leave that for Jen to discover.

Peter41

Really hoping you pick up Voyager as well. It came out during DS9 S3 run. Been waiting for you to get to this episode. S3 onwards is a definite tone shift for DS9.

Opti_Frog

Tribunal: An excellent example of how good Star Trek is at depicting Cardassia as a fascist society. For me, "On Cardassia, every crime is solved" echoes a line from the tv movie Citizen X from 1995: "There are no serial killers in the Soviet state." The Jem'Hadar: Sisko's final line in the episode gave me full body goosebumps.

Kristin

Can't wait for season 3!!

Chrissonator

Yup, the Galaxy class was picked for the Odyssey was to show that the Enterprise would've suffered the same fate, it was a real gut punch because the Odyssey was the same class as the Enterprise from TNG that we'd seen rise above all odds.

TheADHDOverlord

One of the Smartest Decisions of the season was having a Galaxy Class Ship, not named The Enterprise, get absolutely pasted in that 1st military encounter with The Dominion. It makes such a HUGE Statement on so many levels that it gives me chills to this day how MUCH this choice matters to establishing so many things going forward.

Tyrone Tyrone

I recognized the defense attorney for O'Brien (Fritz Weaver) from the movie Fail Safe (1964)

Ember_Atelier

I'm imagining what it would be like if it actually was the Enterprise instead of the Odyssey. How would Picard handle it? Would LaForge do some clever trick with the shields to make them work better? Maybe just get out of there as fast as possible?

Ember_Atelier

The scene where the Jem'Hadar is letting Sisko know that they know about the Federation treaty with the Cardassians and that the Klingons like bat'leths... I was hoping he would continue on with more info they learned: "And do you think it is strange that Klingons and tribbles do not like each other?" "Why would you let yourself be treated as playthings by this.. Q?" "If the Borg tried to assimilate the Dominion, they would fail miserably!" "If the Dominion ruled over Risa there will be no more Jamaharon!" "I hear the Pakleds are rather slow in the mind... wouldn't you agree?"

John DiGiantomasso

Citizen X is such an amazing story. As disturbing as it is, I love the heroic determination of Burokov. One of my favorite films!

John DiGiantomasso

I'm sure they sometimes do go well, but that makes for boring episodes. So we only get to see them when they go sideways. 🤪

John DiGiantomasso

Great reactions. I love this series, and it is so great to see it through your eyes. I did not appreciate how great it was when it first aired.

Kristin

I assume that Enterprise had the best of the best of the best, since they were the flagship. But I also assume that ALL galaxy class ships would at least have the best of the best, so I'm not sure that Enterrpsie/Picard/LaForge could outmaneuver the Jem'Hadar. The Dominion is fearsome.

Kristin

Knowing Nog's story arc, this episode is actually pretty funny.

Curran Dobbs

In between season 2 and season 3, the writers sat down and sorted out what the Dominion is about so there are a few things shown in the episode you just watched that change slightly or just don't show up again. Mostly minor things though.

Laura Thornley

Cardassian politics always gets me riled up. There are great individual Cardassian characters, but their government absolutely sucks.

Aaron

You should consider not watching the opening credits for the season 4 premier of DS9 since It likely contains spoilers.

Bobby Coolbreeze

Yeah we have to tell her to cover her eyes as we get closer lol

Aaron

definitely for any season premiers and finales it's a good idea.

Fanchman

She indicated she's going to focus on DS9 and the movies in release order. She may watch Voyager in the future, but not right now.

Paul Sophocleous

A shame, because one of the movies has a huge spoiler for DS9...

Peter41

Fanchman states she's watching them in release order so the movies won't spoil DS9. 10th movie has a slight spoiler for Voyager, but it isn't a big deal.

Clay F

Two good episodes.

Desmond

lol, yeah. All of Quark's protestations about how Ferengi are actually better than humans fall a little flat when you consider how extremely repressed women are in their society.

Slate

Yes, Jen. It just got real. As Ambassador Kosh, a prominent character from another classic sci-fi series (Babylon 5, which you should DEFINITELY watch, and I think most people here would agree) once said: "And so it begins."

Ortizmo

Voyager Shmoyager. Such wasted potential and sub-par writing. Tim Russ is the sole reason to watch.

rubberkidney

hot take, consistently has some of the highest rated episodes.

Lee

The Enterprise has insurmountable plot armor, so they would have survived the encounter. But that wasn't what this story needed. In order to demonstrate the power of the Dominion to the viewers, the loss of a Galaxy-class starship was imperative.

Kristin

Where did indicate that she was going to focus on DS9? I missed the announcement? THX!

Eric Rinehart

Ya show literally just showed us get ready cause no one safe anymore
