Another Marvel and I was very excited to learn more about The Hulk! I had heard mixed things about this one but I liked it and it felt almost like a monster movie which you know I love! It seems like Hulk himself is a very lovable/tragic character so really looking forward to seeing more of him in future 👍

I was just getting ready for bed and then Jen posts this underrated gem. Well looks like it’s gonna be a late night for me cause I’m not missing out on more of Jen’s MCU journey! 🔥

Ian

Not sure when I will get round to this one but when I do I'm sure it will be a hulk smash of a fun time 🔥🙂

William Rosmer

when this movie came out they'd just done another hulk movie that is generally considered a flop and at best only tangentially related to this one (outside of being about the same character) about five years before. in my opinion that combined with hulk being one of the oldest marvel characters meant they thought they didn't need to fully do the origin story outside of a bit of dialogue and the opening speed run of it.

William Rosmer

day laborer, he's getting paid under the table. and not at "guy keeping the factory running" pay but the guys on the line pay. He's afraid the government will be after him if he shows up on official documents.

William Rosmer

the beefy security guard he gave the pizza to was a cameo by the actor who played the hulk (but not banner) in the old tv show

William Rosmer

in the comics at least, the hulk has theoretically infinite strength/durability as long as he keeps getting angrier he will get stronger and tougher with no defined maximum.

Opti_Frog

Not a terrible movie by any stretch, but probably the most play-it-safe, generic and milquetoast entry in the entire Infinity Saga. Especially compared with Ang Lee's Hulk which had substance, style and themes galore, but lost so much goodwill by having a weird design for Hulk. The poodle didn't help, i guess. The thing that bugs me most about this movie is Edward Norton. Marvel is usually really good at casting their movies, but Norton is absolutely miscast in my view.

Mastervodo

Lou Ferrigno. Bodybuilder.

Mastervodo

The skinny about Edward Norton was pretty much that he was difficult to work with, wanted creative control, and was not in it for the long haul anyway. So, ultimately, just a bad choice for Hulk and the MCU in general.

Curran Dobbs

The dude says "The mixture could be an abomination". Abomination was the bad guy's alter ego in the comics. In Iron Man, they dropped the term "Iron Monger" without actually calling Jeff Bridge's character that though that was his villain name in the comics (like how Stark goes by Iron Man). They occasionally go out of their way to avoid using comic book names for some of their villains in the MCU.

Mastervodo

In the beginning, when Norton says, "Don't make me hungry. You wouldn't like me when I'm hungry". That was an homage to the TV series. In the opening credits of the Incredible Hulk TV series, the actor who played Bruce Banner (for some reason named Bill Bixby in the TV show) tells an investigator that keeps hounding him, "Mr. McGee... don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry".

William Rosmer

Bill Bixby is the actor's name. They changed the character name to David Banner because they didn't want an alliterative name.

Harvey Lee

David Banner (the tortured scientist was played by actor Bill Bixby on the Hulk TV series (I believe that's what you meant) During the pilot Jack McGee was a tabloid reporter who blames the "creature" for a tragic accident costing lives he also believes there's a connection between the Hulk and Banner Banner famously says Mr Magee don't make me angry you wouldn't like me when I'm angry ! This was the better version out of the Hulk films imo Cheers .

Michael Jung

Oh, I wouldn't worry about the Abomination. I'm sure after some time in prison he'll mellow out and take up haiku writing.

Mastervodo

Yes, Harvey, that's what I was thinking. Words typing hard sleepy.

Jeremy Nuss

Edward Norton was very difficult to work with on the set. He wanted more creative control, and the studio wanted more of a team player.

Richard smith

Liv Tyler of Steven Tyler of Aerosmith

JPDotCom23

The scene with Tony Stark was the post credit scene in the movie's original release, they pushed it up, for whatever reason.

Harvey Lee

Dr David Banner . Physician .scientist that lead me to that segway and also this fun piece of trivia ! among the people who auditioned for the role of The creature when he is the HULK , was Ted Cassidy who famously played Lurch on the Addams Family he didn't get the part which instead went to Lou Ferrigno But stayed on to do the narration that opening line and i repeat now DR David Banner . Physician , Scientist and of course the whole narration was done by Ted Cassidy plus he also did the Hulk's growling sounds .

Greg 61

Hey Jen. When are you going to post the next MCU movie???

Jonathan D

Wrong. Edward was beautifully cast. Mark was not cast well.

Bernie Zwicky

There were numerous nods to the original tv show in this. One was at time stamp 4:18:00, which shows Bill Bixby, who played Dr. David Banner. At 30:46:00 there’s a snippet of the original theme music and at 37:42:00 Lou Ferrigno, who played the Hulk. The Incredible Hulk TV show, was a really good and popular show! I actually liked the storyline of the TV show version of the Hulk much better…it had nothing associated with the Military. It was simply about Dr. Banner going through life and trying to find a cure to stop becoming the Hulk, but along the way, helping people in each episode! Great reaction to this one Jen…I’m glad you enjoyed it!😊

When I saw the movie the first time, I thought they did a great job of speed-running an origin story with the montage (not to mention how much of a loving homage it is to the TV show's opening credits) but I've seen reactor after reactor completely whiff through the opening credits and then lament about a lack of origin story. The 2003 "Hulk" doesn't really fill that gap either, since the Hulk's origin in that movie (nano tech and daddy issues) doesn't mesh with any other incarnation.

William Rosmer

yeah. my point was basically that they anticipated a level of pop culture osmosis on hulk's origin story so they didn't need to spend a lot of time on it. i think it works, but i've known who hulk was for over a decade before the movie happened so i can't exactly judge it by the same terms as someone who doesn't know the character

Jason Scade

Fun, exciting reaction. It's a so-so MCU for me, but I'm a big fan of Ed Norton & Jen reactions. I remember seeing this Hulk in the cinema when it was new, can't believe that was 18 years ago! I've very fond memories of the Hulk tv series from the 70s, the effects would make you laugh now, though. The actor, Bill Bixby, who played Bruce Banner was 1st class! ♥

Even without the entire MCU legacy retroactively weighing down on it, this movie felt like a mish-mash of Spy Caper staring Ed Norton, and CGI blockbuster staring... not Ed Norton. I actually kinda' like how different it feels compared to modern MCU though.
