** I watched the version with runtime: 1:31:47

Watch-Along (no copy needed to sync) available! LINK BELOW

Runner Up in the poll and this one was so cool! I had no idea what to expect and I was so pleasantly surprised! Very funny, effortlessly cool slice of life of some 20-somethings in the 90's. I'd love to check out more in this series, does anyone want to watch Mallrats?

Yes, Mallrats, Chasing Amy and Dogma :D

Kristen

I want to watch Mallrats 🙋🏻‍♀️

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

Do them all!! Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Clerks 2, Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, Clerks III and there's also a Clerks animated series... 😁

Erik Lundmark

I think this one was made for $27K - most on credit cards. It's in black and white because those reels were cheaper, proving you only need a good script to make a good movie

Tom Evans

Heck yeah, the View Askewniverse has some great movies. Unfortunately Dogma is still hard to get. It's finally getting a new Blu-Ray release on Dec 9 but it's not on any streaming platforms.

Kristin

Clerks is fun! Clerks II crossed some lines for me, but it was generally well accepted. IMO Mallrats is just ok, but it's been a long time since I've seen it. I much prefer Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. I think you would enjoy it. Dogma is good too, but if you are Catholic...it might poke too hard.

zynjams

I'm a Catholic and love Dogma.

Kevin Smith actually worked the video store that was door . That both places were owned by Tarlochen Singh Thapar and his wife. He let Kevin film during the night as not to disturb the customers during business hours. He has talked about his relationship with Mr. Thapar a lot during interviews and on social media about with out him an his wife there wouldn’t be any View Askeniverse. Sadly he passed away on November 21.

ak416

They are all worth watching. Some are better than others, of course, but by the time you watch 2 or 3 movies in the "series", you'll be so invested you'll want to watch them all anyways :)

Kane

Very excited to watch this and as many more Kevin Smith movies as you want to watch.

Cody Cameron

Yes Jen please watch mallrats make you go with the threatical cut of it though. It's the better version of the movie

Brando83

I've been waiting for this one since I signed up! For any re-watch you do, pay attention to some of the names of the secondary and off-screen characters. That's all I'll say.

Kristin

That's good to know!

Harvey Lee

I worked in a video store around this era and can relate to the odd shenanigans here , very cool indie flick and a lead in to the view askew universe of Kevin Smith 🤙

Erik Lundmark

Mallrats - Yes Dogma would have to be my favorite though, if nothing else then Please that one, IF it's available that is, heard it's on the way to streaming finally but last I heard that was over a year ago. A DVD copy might be the only way to watch it...

Erik Lundmark

Is it really out on Blu-Ray in December?

Kane

I would like to once again strongly suggest the theatrical cut of Mallrats. It's pretty universally considered superior to the extended cut, I believe even Kevin Smith agrees.

Curran Dobbs

The black and white was because they couldn't afford professional lighting equipment and black and white made it easier to work around that. Also the store shutters were closed because most of the movie was shot at night when the store was closed.

Ian

Watched this so long ago I only remember finding it so boring and don't think I laughed once so hoping rewatching with Jen will change that 🤞 regardless the thumbnail would suggest Jen had fun and that above all is all that matters 🙂

Jack O

I'm not even supposed to be here today!

Curran Dobbs

Speaking of stoners (Jay and Silent Bob), one thing I like about weed is that it has given me the opportunity to use the line "What's a run down joint like this doing in a pretty woman like you?" (used on a close enough friend that wouldn't find it creepy).

Curran Dobbs

Oo, for the YouTube edit of the scene of Randal listing off the adult films, you shouldn't censor EVERY word. Let random innocuous words through sans context while censoring the words you A: Absolutely should censor and B: some random others.

WinkNudgeNudge

Well yeah! Watch the whole universe for sure... You'll love the other ones!

Tom Evans

Yep Dec 9 release date. Kevin Smith sorta got the rights back last year. Someone else was able to buy it from Weinstein and they were willing to work with Kevin. So they re-released it in theaters this summer and now it's getting a 4K Blu-Ray release. I would guess some time next year it'll hit streaming.

Sykonee

Oh yes, this was a movie many could relate to. Was working at a relative dead-end job in similar fashion (small town electronics store with movie/game rentals), including an absentee boss, leaving me to my own devices on how to run it. Being of similar age, I was mostly a Dante at first, but as retail business dwindled, became more of a Randal by the end. I'd like to think this movie helped inspire me to actually 'shit or get off the pot' regarding my own life in moving away to better opportunities.

MattN

Kevin Smith was definitely a pivotal director for me growing up. I remember me and my buddy watched this when we worked\hung out at our local convenience store and it spoke to us. Then we find out Kevin Smith paid for the movie on credit cards and loans from his family, filmed at his work after hours, and used his friends\family as extras it really made us feel like "one of us" could actually succeed. After I moved to California I met him and he's literally one of nicest people I've ever met. Such a genuine human being. I love him and anything in the view askew universe. I really do think most of these movies from view askew would be right up your alley jen

JakeToll

Welcome to the View Askewniverse!!

Jonas

It wouldn't surprise me if these movies become one of your most popular series of videos. Lots of Millennials and Gen Xers have special connections to them, and most still love them to this day.

Jeremy Nuss

As an elder millennial, I only had Gen X to look up to as a kid. I was never cool enough to be a slacker with them though lol

Noremac

I never really progressed beyond adolescence so I can't relate to slice of life movies. Never had a relationship, or partied, or did drugs, or had a job, or anything like that. So mostly this movie makes me uncomfortable. Does oral sex count as sex? Bizarre!

Jeremy Nuss

To be fair, we had a presidential impeachment around the question, does oral sex mean sex.

Mike Hart

Kevin attended film school in Vancouver and met his filmmaking partner Scott Mosier (who played several roles in the movie) there before making Clerks. You'll be happy to know that when Randal was calling the adult film titles, the child was not on set.

Andrew Hafey

He finally got the rights from Weinstein. They're not releasing it to physical or streaming until they're done with the tour in the theaters. It's due for home release in Feb.

Trigger

Nostalgia for the 1990s when we had to go all the way to Big Choice Video to rent Best of Both Worlds
