Been looking forward to this one! Spock was originally meant to appear in the opening act, but Nimoy didn't want to do what he felt was just a cameo. Something about the Enterprise interior scenes seemed off to me, then I realized the low rumble sound heard in the background throughout the series was missing. Probably more realistic but dull af. I saw Marina Sirtis at a con around the time this movie opened, she said "they finally let me fly the ship, but made me the one who crashed it."

daniel j brooks

Welp, I guess I am staying up late tonight. Been waiting a long time for you to get to these movies.

Brett Whittaker

Wait what!? Ok Saturday plans just changed

Geoff S.

I’m so glad nothing was spoiled for you with this movie. A lot of huge things occur and a lot more to come as well. Can’t wait to watch this later tonight!

Vaderfan1

The perfect thing to watch while I work on my Lego Enterprise-D!

Brett Whittaker

That’s no probe, it’s…..CHAMPAGNE!!

Matt O'Keefe

I hate that they basically destroy Picard's family in this movie. It is so sad. Both his brother and nephew dead.

TechJJ

GREAT to see you like it! The action sequence on this one was something I keep replaying (really showing off) on my newly setup 7.1 home theater with 70-inch projection TV back in mid 1990s... Don't listen to naysayers, ALL four TNG movies are very good and are well liked by different folks and I think you will like them all just like I did!

Kane Is Able

GOT DAMNIT!!! I was going to bed.

Kane Is Able

TBH, I was expecting this reaction next Tuesday.

TheADHDOverlord

One reason I tend to ignore the schedule for movie reaction drops.... so i can get that rush of "YESSSSS" when I see something I am really looking forward to.

Desmond

Glad you liked this one. Lots of fun stuff, and it does have a great score, though honestly I prefer All Good Things...written by the same writers as this film, around the same time, interestingly enough. No spoilers but the next one is probably the TNG-era film that fans enjoy most.

Over50Gamer

Ok, I was watching Ace Ventura with your reaction (and enjoying it) and, in the middle of it, here comes Generations! I'll get back to Ace tomorrow because that one is a favorite of mine from my 20's, but I can't resist Trekkin with Jen.

rubberkidney

ooh boy.,..saw this in theaters in 1994, blew my mind.

rubberkidney

oh and time to watch clockwork orange .

Julian San

Damn, you know Jen is serious about spoilers when she sticks the hand out to block the credits! 😂

TheADHDOverlord

There are soooo many Easter Eggs in the Opening Scene alone... soooo many Actors & Actresses on that Bridge with a LONG History with Trek now...

Kane Is Able

Lifeforms! You tiny little lifeforms! You precious little lifeforms! Where are you?

Sykonee

The Trek Renaissance was probably at its peak leading up to this movie. So much media blitz surrounding it (half a year since 'All Good Things...' did make the heart grow fonder), not to mention getting folks hyped for the launch of Voyager in just a couple months. Plus you had so many other networks hitching their wagon in interest of sci-fi shows (B5, SeaQuest, Earth 2, Space: Above & Beyond...). Yeah, mid-'90s was definitely a Golden Age.

rubberkidney

forgot about the tuvok cameo.

William Rosmer

the reason the lighting was so dark, and why they blew up the ship is because the sets didn't look good on movie quality film compared to tv quality film.

Kane Is Able

She doesn't know who that is. Please stop with possible spoilers.

rubberkidney

feels a little anal to call it a spoiler. she has no clue who it is and it seems like shes not even going to watch voyager. explain to me how me saying the name of a character on voyager is 'spoiling' anything. she doesnt even know who im referring to. do you think shes going to hold on to this rando name for months until she starts voyager and then it will be ruined because she heard the name 'tuvok' once in a patreon comment? like wtf? are you ok?

Rick Rodriguez

This is my least favorite Trek movie but I will gladly rewatch with Jen's reaction. The music is wonderful actually.

Ian

Holy friggin moly Jen you slayed it with the thumbnail it's perfect 11/10 🔥🔥🔥🖖 looking forward to checking this out with coffee and maybe cake a bit later 🙂 make it so !

daniel j brooks

clearly, the character is human so, it isn't Tuvok. what does a name spoil anyways really? would "Paris" b a spoiler for an actor who has appeared in a Next Gen episode who clearly isn't that thing, i don't think so.

daniel j brooks

V is my least favorite, this movie is fantastic!!!

Joel

RIP Enterprise D

rubberkidney

agreed people get absurd with the spoiler crap. i had someone go crazy because i said an actor was in something..like holy shit guys whats next? telling someone the title is spoiling something?

Brett Whittaker

So when does Voyager start I think Jen will love that show too.

Kane Is Able

Jen, just don't Google Enterprise XXX. That's a different movie.

Clay F

If Voyager starts, it would be after completion of DS9.

Clay F

V is my least favorite.

Lintrinsic

If you'd used the name of the actor, no one would be complaining.

Clay F

As for TNG movies, First Contact (1996) is my favorite but I like Generations. Hard not to like a TNG movie, especially one w/both Kirk and Picard. I am fine with the way Kirk went out. I thought the special effects and cinematography were good. Picard did have a sense of awe when he first saw Kirk, but I guess didn't express that to Kirk. Funny that Data pushed Beverly into the water. Puzzling why crew didn't laugh. I mean Beverly commented on getting into the spirit in view of Riker removing the plank for Worf to fall into the water. Data did that w/o the chip. With the chip, Data's excessive laughter and other behavior seem sort of weird/cringey. Would have liked to seen Uhura in the movie. "Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley declined to appear as their characters Spock and Leonard McCoy. Nimoy felt there were story problems with the script and that Spock's role was extraneous." When Whoopi Goldberg arrived on set, she asked to see Nichelle Nichols (Uhura), and was told that Nichols (Uhura) was not in the film. Patrick Stewart said that he made an effort for original cast's involvement in the film: "I didn't want us to sail into the future just as The Next Generation cast." To me, TNG is more about the TNG episodes than the TNG movies -- though I do like the TNG movies.

William Rosmer

Malcolm McDowell (Soren) is the uncle of Alexander Siddig (Dr. Bashir). Also they actually used the same uniforms Sisko and O'Brien use in DS9 in this movie.

Curran Dobbs

One of the bridge officers of the Enterprise-B had a cameo in Spaceballs as the dude who yelled "We ain't found s**t!" in the combing the dessert scene.

Aaron Thorpe

Thanks for the reaction, Jen. It's interesting that you noticed similarities to the DS9 theme quite a few times in the music. The score was composed by Dennis McCarthy, long time Trek composer and composer of the DS9 theme. I always love your musical insights, thanks!

TheADHDOverlord

re: outro - I watched this every Friday night for 7 years from when I was 4-11... it was my favorite show as a kid. So I 100% get missing the crew... i feel like this is such a pervasive feeling for so many that this longing is sprinkled alllllll over Pop Culture since the show finished airing 😂

rubberkidney

i dont know about that, but please explain to me how i spoiled voyager by using the name 'tuvok'? i cant wait.

jon bolton

Fantastic reaction as always Jen. A lot to say. I love this movie, it's my second favourite of the films after The Undiscovered Country. 1994 had so many great films and this is my 4th favourite after Pulp Fiction, Speed, and Natural Born Killers. Data's little song scanning for lifeforms wasn't scripted, hence Riker's genuinely amused expression, the cast were always joking around on set so he probably didn't know if it was going to be left in. When Deanna took the helm, Marina Sirtis actually burnt her bum on some pyrotechnics that had gone on the chair and needed medical assistance😂. Knowing Marina has an amazing sense of humour and is a feminist, i've joked with her a few times at conventions and on Twitter about Troi being a stereotypical woman driver, first time at helm and she crashes the ship. Since then i've seen her make similar jokes about that in Q&A sessions. I guess she did have a burnt arse at the time, i didn't know that until later or i'd have joked about that too😜. I'm glad you didn't get any spoilers about Kirk, Scotty, and Chekov, but it was called Generations for a reason. I loved the look of delight and excitement from you seeing Kirk and Picard together. A lot of Scotty and Chekov's dialogue had been written for Spock and McCoy. Kirk's original recorded death when he went in the Nexus he died alone as he predicted in The Final Frontier. Kirk's Enterprise wasn't destroyed until the The Search For Spock, TNG beat them on that doing it in their first film. Another good thing about you watching in release order is that of course was the Duras sisters who were killed, and thankfully you'd already seen them in Season 1 of DS9. This movie was actually being filmed at the same time as All Good Things so at times cast and crew weren't sure which they were filming for.

JaylaSiobhanClark

I do love this movie, but I do think about a few of the flaws sometimes, like the Bird of Prey explosion being recycled from Star Trek 6, that there's no 'hero shot' of the Enterprise D establishing the old girl for the big screen, or that a lot of times they kind of call attention to the fact that they used the same sets for TV that were built for 240i, which can stand out in 1080p (which quite frankly is all I ever watch a movie at. 4K is a wasted venture with any TV under 60" and our household TV is actually 50"). Still, I will be frank about this. The "Odd number curse" really doesn't exist to me except for 5. The only other Trek movie I dislike, one that Jen has already seen, is "Into Darkness" and that's the twelfth one.

Noremac

Not really a fan of this one. Anyone see the Mr Plinkett reviews of the Trek films?

Andrew Roach

My disappointment was that Kirk didn't visit the Enterprise D or interact with anyone else before going down to the planet to fight Soren and golly... that Bird of Prey explosion sure looked familiar. I guess it's a small universe as Malcolm McDowell (Soren) starred in a 1979 movie called Time After Time and without giving anything away his costar was David Warner who was 1) the Romulan in Star Trek V, 2) Chancellor Gorkon in Star Trek VI and 3) the Cardassian who tortured Picard. And oh yeah.... the director of that movie was Nicholas Meyer who directed Star Trek II and VI. The next TNG movie is generally regarded as the best one and wow... wait until you hear the score!!

jon bolton

Same here, i don't care if it's gone 5am in England. I opened more beer and watched😂

Tom Evans

Fun reaction, I love that you're such a fan you remembered Robert and Rene and referenced "The Inner Light." And yes the Klingon women were the Duras sisters who were recurring baddies on TNG and DS9. I hear a lot of DS9 in the Generations score, too. The original TNG theme was composed by Jerry Goldsmith, but after that TNG, DS9 and now Generations was all Dennis McCarthy. I think he must have enjoyed cross-referencing the different themes. PS: I love the thumbnail for this video with the starfield backdrop behind you, it really pops.

Sean Ellingham

The reason for the darker lighting on the Enterprise-D is to hide the fact that the sets were built for TV rather than for film, covering up the flaws that weren't visible when the show was broadcast but that could be seen in the cinema. This is also why they destroyed the ship - it wasn't thought to be practical to rebuild the standing Enterprise-D sets at movie-level quality, so destroying the ship allowed for any future movies to be shot with sets that were designed for movies from the beginning. The reason we didn't see the saucer separate much on the show was simply that it was too expensive to do on a regular basis. The original model used for the Enterprise VFX shots was six-feet long, but due to its size was very unwieldy and expensive to work with, so around S3 a new four-foot model was introduced that was much easier to work with. However, the four-foot model didn't have the ability to separate the saucer, which meant that had they wanted to shoot a saucer separation, they would have needed to use the six-foot model instead. Given the extra costs of doing so, that wasn't considered worthwhile - with the notable exception of Best of Both Worlds, which was the only time other than S1 in which the saucer separation was shown.

Geoff S.

Years ago when I saw this I remember being pissed and blamed Geordi for the destruction of the Enterprise. I thought if he hadn't been stubborn and pursued medical treatment for his eyes it wouldn't have happened. I always wondered if Levar Burton got crap for his role in this. Now however I'm just ambivalent about it and I realize it's all just fiction anyway.

Nathan Burgess

Kirk giving up eternity to save 250 million people and the crew of the Enterprise D is a good way for Kirk to die, making a difference. A fine handover to the next generation.

Lintrinsic

It's an even smaller universe. Malcolm McDowell is Alexander Siddig's uncle IRL.

Lintrinsic

And he was in Starship Mine as one of the gang robbing the Enterprise.

Lintrinsic

Jen says throughout every reaction that she doesn't want any spoilers. Granted this isn't a big one but any spoiler is always going to get a bunch of people telling you to knock it off. The real question is why it's so important to you to post a Voyager character name in a reactor who hasn't seen it's chat? Because it's a weird hill to defend, let alone die on.

Patrick

I've gotta say, well done on the timing of covering the cast with your hand during the intro. That was a close call! Not the best TNG film but I still really enjoy it. Great score and it's a great looking film. I love the lighting in all the shots. Malcolm McDowell does egomaniacal really well.

Jason Scade

It feels like I've waited an eternity for this. So excited to catch up with. Delighted you loved it! 😄💜

Fanchman

Maybe I'm just weird, but on the big screen, when B'Etor told Soran he better be initiating a mating ritual, she looked a little hot to me. 😁

Patrick

I would party with B'Etor

Wesley

One of my favorite Trek films, because of it's maturity. As a young man I was very dismissive of this film, but as I've aged, the themes of mortality, grief, legacy, and grappling with our past choices, resonate more with me every passing year. The contrasting ideas of "Time is the fire in which we burn" vs "Time is a companion along our journey" speak to me very deeply. So this is Star Trek at is best for me, because it's a study of the human condition, it's not about the action and explosions, it's about the emotions of our characters. And I know the lighting of the Enterprise was done to hide the shoddiness of the sets, but the golden hour lighting gives a feeling of either a sunrise or sunset, a beginning and an end, part of the cycle of life, which again are core themes of this film, acceptance of mortality and change. I could write a lot more, but theres a great article by Skye Wingfield called "In Defence of Star Trek Generations" and it says everything I think about this film.

Ian

Ty Jen just finished watching and that was awesome, you were fantastic as always from your amusement at data experiencing emotions , your joy at seeing the old crew , the sadness in your eyes at Kirk's passing , just everything was top tier reacting 🔥🙌 it's been a long wait for this one and it was definitely worth it , if this doesn't get 100k views on YouTube on day one something is wrong with the world , awesome stuff Jen 🔥💙🖖

Fanchman

My only issue with the interaction between Picard and Kirk was when Picard asks Kirk to come back and help him, it was basically just for a fist fight. I would have much preferred a situation where they could strategize together.

Summer

Except for the Voyage Home I always preferred Star Trek as a TV show, your reaction was awesome . Just noticed as they crashed Data is protecting Troi while Riker and Worf are lumps on logs don’t kid yourself Kirk, you were doing your thing when Picard’s father was in diapers not his grandfather

Darryl Low

Yay! It's Jenerations Day! I really enjoyed watching this movie with you this morning, seeing you go through the rollercoaster of emotions and all of the surprises. I think the opening titles of this one are probably the best of the Star Trek movies. The spinning champagne bottle flying through space and then smashing into the hull of the ship, with the Star Trek fanfare blasting out. It's so cool. When this movie first came out, it was known that some of the original cast would be returning as it going to be a passing of the torch to the next crew. It was kind of impossible to avoid, so you did well just by holding out your hand Jen to get the best surprise ever! 😊 No matter how many times I've seen this movie, Kirk's final moments always get me. I liked the score a lot. A continuation of the style of the tv show, but with a bigger orchestra and the choir for the Nexus scenes was perfect. Overall I really like this movie. It was the perfect transition to the big screen for TNG crew. Not just a great Trek movie, but a great science fiction movie. Thanks for your reaction today Jen 😊

Lintrinsic

I really rate this movie, I think it's great. Maybe not my all time favourite but it certainly hits the TNG spot. I'm always particularly amused by Geordi's sleeves looking long and wrinkled in places. It's because it was a Chief O'Brien uniform cut slightly differently so the sleeves could be rolled up. I saw somewhere that part of the reason why they totalled the Enterprise D in this flick was because it looked great on TV, but they decided it's proportions didn't fill a cinema screen well. I've also read they considered changing the ship in latter seasons of TNG but ultimately couldn't afford the effects so it was probably inevitable.

Michael B.

If I remember correctly there was a TNG episode where Dr. Pulaski asked Geordi why he doesn't replace his visor with lab grown biological transplants for his eyes to look normal. He answed that he doesn't consider his blindness a disability. And also that he doesn't want to give up all the enhancements to his vision the visor provided and that those were particularly useful to him as an engineer.

Sykonee

Was actually the earliest RLM material came across, even before their famed SW videos. Oh you bet those vids were shared on Trek forums back in the day!

William Rosmer

i think it also had to do with the film quality difference between what they were using for tv and movie film. it looked bad on the higher quality film they were shooting on. it's also why the entire movie the enterprise has the lights set to dim.

JR Bob Dobbs

I thought this one was sloppy and was too much fan service personally. It comes across as low budget and I didn't personally like including the original cast. Its not horrible, but I remember it being kind of a let down.

Matt Poppell

Great reaction to a movie that I think always got treated a bit harshly. It suffered in the fact that it came out so close to the series finale and a lot of people didn’t think it was as good. I still think it was a great movie though. A bit of goofy behind the scenes, they wanted to introduce a mix of the DS9 uniforms for continuity, but didn’t have time to tailor all of them. So Riker is wearing Sisko’s uniform (which is why the sleeves were rolled up because it was too small) and then Geordi wore O’Brien’s (which is why the sleeves basically cover his hands). That, plus the new comm badges on all the uniforms helped bring along the continuity of the timeline.

Matt Poppell

She said she is going to finish DS9 before she would start Voyager. And she hasn’t committed to watching it at all yet. She might want a break after DS9

Matt Poppell

That’s always been one of my biggest gripes with Trek. Every series and movie blows any surprise with those dang opening credits.

Lintrinsic

That's not entirely right. They had a uniform redesign, it's claimed they even started filming with it, then decided not go with them. So they went with a mixture of old and DS9, some of them borrowed. It was too late to change the action figures, so theres some around with the aborted uniforms. There's also a few pictures and allegedly a deleted scene.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

I really enjoy how they phased in the new DS9 style uniforms crew member by crew member and scene by scene. Really makes it feel more organic, like it's an actual change by Starfleet.

Major Peril

Wow! It feels like it’s taken forever to get here, but HERE we are. Congratulations for getting to the first of the TNG movies. It’s been a long journey but it’s been fun and I’m so glad you’ve stuck with it. Although I have not been keeping up with all of the TNG episode reactions (or DS9 for that matter), I’ve watched those that interested me the most in the past. I do however watch the movie reactions because I enjoy those the most. While I can’t say that Generations was ever my favorite, I did enjoy watching it again here and your reaction to it was simply FANTASTIC! You were like the proverbial kid in a candy store, your attention flitting from one little detail to the next and your apparent joy in seeing all the characters once again was quite evident. I really enjoyed this reaction… just awesome! So glad you enjoyed it, too. I had forgotten that Tim Russ had a bit part in this one as a young officer at a station directly behind the Captain. We will see more of him in a later Star Trek. 😁 Also, the young female officer with red curls manning a science station in the background is the actress Jenette Goldstein, a favorite of James Cameron having appeared in Aliens and Terminator 2.

Zapp Rowsdower

"They say time is the fire in which we burn" - Malcolm McDowell I find myself quoting that out of nowhere to this day. It's a wonderful reply to "Good morning".

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Earlier on in my Star Trek lifetime (after Nemesis) I was more indifferent about this one. I thought it was fine and it got points for being the first TNG movie but otherwise it was just ok. I don't know that I've really moved it up at all in my rankings over the years but I definitely enjoy it more now than I did then. One my other favourite reactor-verse shows has a quote "Growing to love something is really simply forgetting slowly what you dislike about it." and that's absolutely how I try to treat my fandoms, enjoy the stuff that I like about it and don't worry too much about the stuff I don't or try to create my own headcanon to square whatever doesn't make sense.

JPDotCom23

Gwynyth Walsh and Barbara March, who played B'Etor and Lursa in this movie, are both Canadian; Walsh from Winnipeg, March from Toronto.

JR Bob Dobbs

I agree with FC as the best but I would put Insurrection above Nemesis.

Jeff Seely

The El-Aurians (the species that Guinan and Soran belong to) have a sixth sense that isn't fully understood, so that moment when Soran told Picard that "time is the fire in which we burn" was especially creepy. It was as if Soran could sense something about what had happened to Picard's family and was slyly referencing it with his "burn" comment. Generations has gotten mixed reviews, but it's one of my favorites. I love the theme of learning to deal with things like death and aging, and Picard's comment at the end about time being a companion that goes with us on the journey and reminds us to cherish every moment is one of my all-time favorite movie quotes. I feel like I should mention a couple of small issues I have with the production quality. One is that the uniforms in Generations are wildly inconsistent. Some members of the crew are wearing the DS9 uniforms while others are wearing the TNG uniforms. And I don't know if you noticed, but Picard was back to wearing his TNG uniform for the final scene after wearing a DS9 uniform during his encounter with Soran. It doesn't matter all that much in the scheme of things, but it's definitely something they could've done better. The other issue I have is that the Bird of Prey explosion was recycled from Star Trek 6. It's very much a "tell me you've run out of money without telling me you've run out of money" moment. While I didn't like Kirk's death when I first saw this movie as a teenager, I've come to appreciate it more in the decades since. His "oh my" line in particular is very poignant and sad. To me, it's his realization that this really is the end for him. He can feel the lights going out and it genuinely surprises him. Poor guy.

Lee

Jenette Goldstein also appeared in Cameron's Titanic.

Summer

So watchingg this earlier was tough but I was thinking of the Nexus. If I was there I would imagine all the animals I have ever loved being with me, and many things like that, all the music I love.

Bobby Coolbreeze

I haven’t watch your reaction yet but now I can watch the 4K disc i bought after a year lol

Jason Scade

Nostalgia overload, great reaction! :D

Ken Schneyer

It means a lot to me that you're seeing this film at this particular moment of your life. When it first came out, this movie was the first date my wife and I got to go on after our eldest child was born. My mom and sisters watched the baby while we went to dinner and this film. We'd both watched TOS as kids, and STNG had premiered a month after we were married, so this film was a perfect thing for us to see together. And here you are, with a newborn yourself, watching this film. <3 <3

Lee

Considering Kirk appeared on-screen less than a minute after Shatner's credit, it wouldn't have been much of a spoiler.

RJ MacReady

Getting ready to watch along!

Lintrinsic

As has been said elsewhere, they had a redesigned uniform they changed their minds on, then decided to mix and match. From images remaining, and the action figures it was too late to change they probably made the right choice, but it's certainly a bit of a mess.

Lintrinsic

And Lethal Weapon 2. She's had a prolific career.

Jeff Seely

If they didn't want to use the redesign they had developed and they didn't have enough DS9 uniforms for everyone to wear, then they should've just stuck with the old TNG uniforms for everybody. But like I said, it's not a huge deal. It's just a weird choice on their part.

Jeff Seely

I also had an issue with the rocket getting to the sun so fast. The only way I could try to explain it is that maybe it had a low-powered warp drive on board (maybe something capable of only, say, warp 3 in a short burst) and was able to go to warp as soon as it left the planet's atmosphere. But that's a reach, I know. What's really glaring for me about the Nexus time travel thing is something so bad that it's been memed online: Picard could've gone to his family vineyard a couple of weeks prior to the Soran stuff and warned his family about the fire danger. From that point, he would've had plenty of time to deal with Soran. But that brings up another point: How is there only one Picard? I don't think the movie explained where the Picard from post-Nexus Picard's past went. Did he just cease to exist?

Bammer

The behind the scenes reason for the Enterprise-D being destroyed in Generations is because the T.V. filming model was a pain in a butt to use for a movie production. AND it was an excuse to have a new Enterprise for the next movie. The scene of the Bird of Prey being destroyed was re-used footage of General Chang's Bird of Prey being destroyed in "The Undiscovered Country."

Laura Thornley

Okay, no bed time for me yet. Its not my favourite of the Trek movies but its still really good. Mostly I love it because it feels like a feature length show finale for The Next Generation (though its obviously not the end, since there are other movies - but this is the end of the series for me more then an actual movie).

John

I'm glad you're watching based on release date of the flims with regard to where they fall during the TV series. It matters.

TC Green

I hate how they killed Picard’s family in this movie. They could have had the whole “secretly wishes he had a wife and children” stuff without the needing to kill his family off. That aside I always enjoyed this movie as a super high quality episode of TNG. Which is basically what it is.

Ortizmo

"That sounded like the DS9 theme!" Same composer. The great Dennis McCarthy.

Ortizmo

"Get ready to suck it" is the single greatest comment in all of Trek reactiondom.

john reed

if you notice that riker and geordis uniform did not fit quite well . this is because they where took from the DS9 cast siscko and O'brien

Bobby Coolbreeze

This was the reaction I was waiting for from Jen, Kirk and Picard!!!! This was a passing of the baton for TOS to TNG. Wow she had no idea Kirk, Scotty and Chekov were going to be in this lol This movie was good, it could have been better. Would have been nice if the whole original series crew make an appearance with the TNG cast. Unfortunately for a bunch of reasons they couldn’t get them all together. Nimoy declined cause he didn’t want to just do a cameo appearance. Yes the Enterprise D being destroyed was expected. They were setting it up for the next Hero ship for future movies, a more cinematic version to work with As the Enterprise D didn’t translate very well to the silver screen. Yes I’m with the masses, not my favorite TNG movie but not the worst lol Jen there are 2 videos on YouTube you must see that ties in with this film that you can watch anytime that won’t interfere with watching the other series and won’t spoil anything for you. I can put the links in the comments if you like. They sort of short fan films, that are professionally done that are not canon but I think you would like?

Java Man

I saw William Shatner about 10 years ago when he was doing a one-man stage show. He said his favorite role was when he played Alexander the Great. He knows how to ride a horse.

John DiGiantomasso

It was kind of hard to tell at the beginning, but it almost seemed like you were excited to see that movie. Almost. Wow. Great reaction. This will now be Star Trek Jen-erations to me from now on. Back in the day it was big-time hyped as "Kirk and Picard together" in all the pre-release publicity. I am so glad you got to be surprise-delighted! You did really good on this one!

Over50Gamer

I always head-canon this as the crew were in the middle of transitioning to the new uniforms. 😁

john reed

so glad we did not get the uniforms that they actually wanted for generations they where horrible and the ds9 ones where a last minute change

Over50Gamer

My second comment, after the watchalong: I remember seeing this in the theater with a friend of mine. The audience completely lost it wnen Data went "Ohhhhh SHIT!" 😂 And a couple audience members in front of us referred to my friend and I as Klingons because we were in our boots and biker leathers at the time.

Over50Gamer

Pretty much how my headcanon explains it. 😁

Darryl Low

I'd go one further and put Insurrection above First Contact. It's my favourite of TNG movies 😅

Goddess of Empathy

It's so devastating, I think maybe one of the reasons I don't revisit this film as often as some of the others. But man, Patrick Stewart's acting is phenomenal! That quiet anguish is so heartbreaking

Goddess of Empathy

Haven't watched this film in quite a few years and I was surprised by how emotional it made me! The destruction of the Enterprise is so jarring. I think my only complaint about the movie is... Picard could have gone back at ANY point in time and he chose to go back right before Soran launched the missile? Not back far enough to save his brother and nephew and also stop Soran and also save the Enterprise? Like I get why they did it for the plot but it still annoys me.

Goddess of Empathy

I actually love Insurrection! I think I'd go: First Contact, Insurrection, Generations, Nemesis

Goddess of Empathy

I love that moment with Data protecting Deanna, it's a nice juxtaposition from when he was too scared to save Geordi. He really overcame his fear in that moment.

Goddess of Empathy

They needed to have a policy in place to check Geordi's visor after every time he was kidnapped. Like I feel like we should have learned from experiences past here!

Laura Thornley

If we want to justify the choice, its the last 'mistake' Picard made that he wants to undo. He doesn't know the Enterprise is in danger. By that point I think he's accepted the loss of his family (even if he'll never be over it) and knows its a slippery slope - if he goes back to save them, why not go back further to save others? To save his friend Jack Crusher? To save his mother?

ok fun fact while filming this film patrick stayed with will shatner on his ranch and they ride horses every day together and they became friends yes oh dear is kirks last words yes no more Enterprise NCC 101-D but as said there are plenty more letters in the alphabet awww jen you cried but dont worry i cried the first time watching it too

I enjoy being part of the minority. It's my favourite TNG film personally, and second favourite film after The Undiscovered Country.

We all have loved ones we've lost, and mistakes or regrets we've made like how Kirk felt with Antonia, so i agree with what you are saying.

This movie has always been an emotional rollercoaster. Probably one of the best villains, a space Moriarty scientist type. I know that his line in 10 Forward is from a poem, but its always stuck with me the most. Also the crash of the saucer was the last hurrah of practical effects in Trek, they went all out to the point of blowing up and burning the bridge! One of the most intense moments in Trek in my honest opinion.

Joshua Maley

Been soooo waiting for this one! I know a lot of people kind of write it off as an "extended TNG episode" but I've never personally understood that. They rebuilt and redesigned a lot of the TNG sets for this (did you notice Worf had a chair at tactical, or the the command chairs were up a couple of steps?) and you noticed the movie-grade lighting on the Enterprise ("this is a moody Enterprise"), which felt jarring at first but it was a bit more cinematic to me. Although oddly they didn't match the moody lighting on the Enterprise-B. The inclusion of Kirk, his death, the destruction of the series flagship...none of this was just "weekly" stuff in TNG. It felt like TNG scaled up into a movie, and that's what it was. I've always loved Generations, it's quite possibly in my top 3 favorite Trek movies. What you said, the points you made about Kirk and Picard meeting, Data with his chip, kind of your "wish list"...those were kind of the guidelines Ron Moore and Brannon Braga were given to write this. Kind of a checklist of things to sort out and work into the movie. It's filmmaking by committee which isn't always great but I think they did a lovely job with it. The writing, pacing, escalation, everything was so well done. The score is beautiful and feels very cinematic and bombastic. And as has been said, it was composed by Dennis McCarthy, who did DS9's theme, hence the similar vibes. I'm glad you liked it so much. The original trailers did reveal spoilers, quite a few: we knew going in it was Kirk and Picard teaming up, that was a primary selling point. "Two Captains, One Destiny" was the tag line on a poster, featuring the Enterprise-D warping out of a Delta shield with Kirk and Picard's faces in the background. In the original trailer they revealed the Enterprise-D blowing up and the impending saucer crash. And Johnathan Frakes, bless his heart, he did a guest spot on the QVC network during one of their Star Trek merchandise sales leading up to the movie, and he accidentally said outright "the spaceship doesn't survive the movie" and the host was shocked. And Frakes realized he slipped and said, not sure I was allowed to say that. The build-up to this movie was huge for my friend group, we waited for hours outside the theater for our tickets on opening night. The entire thing was fantastic. And months later, in April of 95, my future wife and I went to see this at a budget theater for our first date. Later we met Walter Koenig (Chekov) and told him about that, he was so happy to hear it and asked us all manner of questions. It was a great moment. He is such a sweet guy. Okay, ranting, sorry, but - glad you loved it! And it's so fun to be revisiting all of this with you, it really has made me fall in love with Trek all over again. After so many years of terrible modern Trek it's a joy to rediscover the classic years.

My wife and I are Star Wars timeline. First date movie? Star Wars. First movie as a married couple? Empire Strikes Back. First movie as parents? Return of the Jedi. We won't talk about the "other" Star Wars movies!

Hey Jen. Very cool reaction to this (at least for me) very epic movie. This is in dead my favourite Star Trek Movie EVER, because THIS is the movie with the Enterprise-D in the foreground (the D is My personel favourite Enterprise from all. I very like it, from the moment I've seen it the first time till now, it's just very cool looking, THE science, combat-ready and the second heroic flagship called Enterprise (My legendary and best flagship U.S.S. Enterprise NCC 1701-D, retrofitted with Quantum-Torpedos in my mind) and it is the most modern ship of his time and it has been on nomerous occasions saved the day, as now to. For the "last time" is has sucesscully saved the most crew members from death And it is THE ship, who killed the Duras-Sisters from TNG's "redemption".) For me it's THE Star Trek-Film with the most mixed emotions AND the most times I cry everytime on several (same) points in the movie (When the Enterprise crash-landing on Veridian III, when the christmas scene is showing and the TWO most emotional scenes when Data finds Spot and when Picard and Riker said Good Bye to the Enterprise-D, on the Enterprise-D-Bridge) and it is very good written I think. For the end from my side a little recommandation: Please wait with the next movie, untill the start with season 6 from DS9. In the next movie there are some little spoilers for DS9 inside. and can you PLEASE react on Star Trek - Voyager, after the end of TNG? It is a very cool and good Star Trek-Series after TNG and running in parallel with DS9. Many Thanks for this and have a nice week. Greeting from your newest Patreon-Member, Galaxy-Fan aka Jan Simon

And the "New" combadge is also showing on this movie for the first time.

P.M.Télé

really enjoyed your enthusiasm and reactions about this movie! it was well worth the wait! 😁

It's "okay" - I'm not sure it hits quite like they wanted it to, for one thing they could have dwelled on Kirk's death a little and made more of a thing about it, then pay it back later with "oh hey he's actually alive - never mind he's dead again" - but they buried that lead as soon as possible, and it feels a bit.. I don't know - almost sort of hollow? Like Data's emotion chip could have been a stronger role - rather than using it for some gags and a scene that shows what role it could have played. The ending felt.. hasty? Picard goes Dickens (like Patrick Stewart hasn't done enough of that in his life) - but more than that they could have spent more time with him in the Nexus - like the way Nexus Guinan offers up seeing his grandkids or whatever. Star Trek has never been afraid of deus ex machina but they made deus ex machina the main character in this one. I don't want to sound like I'm hating on it because it's a perfectly serviceable movie - but you can sense all the ways it could have been more.

RJ MacReady

Saw this in the theater when it came out. It could have been epic and so much better. Still I did enjoy it and enjoyed seeing Kirk and Picard together. I just wish they let Leonard Nimoy make the changes he wanted to make, he was the first choice to direct it but didn't like the script. Still the scene with Picard and Kirk is iconic!

Tony Bain

I don't hate this movie or love it. I seen it in the cinema back in the day and thought It was a decent first outing for them. Sad about certain things that happen in it as we all would be.

Jimazoid

Star Trek Generations was my first introduction to Star Trek. I remember watching it on VHS that my mom rented from the Store and i loved it.

Jimazoid

"What will they drive now?" You'll see in First Contact when you get to it!

Curran Dobbs

To answer your question, now they drive a 2004 Ford Fiesta.

Curran Dobbs

Star Trek: Generations is the closest there is to a Star Trek Christmas movie.

Christopher Lamont Harris

I'm glad you got to see Star Trek generations and you enjoyed it, I got to see it in the theaters years ago but was saddened about the death of James T Kirk, it would have been nice if he had made it through the film and witnessed wonders of the 24th century

Andrew Hafey

All those years of "Captain on the Bridge", and it ends with bridge on the Captain. sorry, i'll see myself out now! :) PS--you noticed them mixing the DS9 uniforms in, but you didn't notice they're all using the DS9 comm badges now. Time for you to upgrade Jen!!!!

No name

There’s a new addition to this movie on a YouTube channel called OTOY. An official short called 765874 Unification. You should Watch it as a reaction. You’ll get to see why Kirk says “oh my”.

Curran Dobbs

Troi took a crash course on flying the Enterprise...

Chris Parker

I came here to recommend that too. Some of the best Star Trek ever!

The_Truth

Too bad we'll never see the Enterprise D again 😏

John

You just couldn't resist?

The_Truth

Resistance is futile

K Dub

I was 23 in 94 when this came out and I ran into both Michael Dorn "Worf" and Jonathan Frakes (#1) at the airport as they were enroute to promote this release in theatres and they both were truly the most authentic people who signed an autograph for me "Go Boldly" which I still have framed with the Generations movie poster to this day. Great reaction and payoff for me following you through this Trek journey. Thank you!!!🖖

HeyEddie

Did Jen mention when she'll watch the next one?

Tom D

This was so nostalgic to watch, both for the movie, and your response to the casts... I remember seeing this at 14, in the Warner Brothers cinema here in Newcastle, UK, which is now sadly long-since demolished, and being exactly this excited.

Roland

If I'm not mistaken First Contact should be coming up soon. Pretty excited for that.
