A spooky Christmas movie by Tim Burton with music by Danny Elfman!? Yes please! This one was oh-so-charming and festive but also would've scared the bejeezuz outta me as a child 😂 Amazing animation, absolutely wonderful music, and a ghost dog!! 😆 Any other stop motion animations we should check out?

Well, I have been meaning to watch this for several years. The time has finally come.

You definitely want to check out ParaNorman. A super-sweet spooky story with animation MUCH more complex, sophisticated, and beautiful than this one. I know you will love it!!!

"Alice", directed by Jan Švankmajer, is a surreal and brilliant take on Alice in Wonderland made in stop-motion. I'd recommend any film by Jan Švankmajer. My favorite stop-motion film is Meet the Raisins. It's only about 25 minutes but it's a hilarious spoof of behind the music documentaries featuring music from motown and elsewhere. "Mad God" is great if all you care about is fantastic and creepy visuals. Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio is recent and very good. And I haven't seen "Institute Benjamenta, or This Dream That One Calls Human Life", but it looks very interesting and got good reviews.

Stop-Motion adjacent movies that randomly come to mind, with the latter "only" referencing it cleverly in a handful of scenes, is Kubo and the Two Strings, which looks simply astonishing, and Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers... which is just a huge (and imho very entertaining) homage fest to the entire animation industry and its many tropes, idiosyncrasies, controversies, packaged as a neat adventure. Which leads me to Akiva Schaffer, the new Naked Gun was enjoyable, but apart from all the great Lonely Island (-ear) stuff, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping is the true underdog I tend to recommend to people. It's the modern Spinal Tap as far as I am concerned, I think so much of the many, many, idiotic things done and said in the movie. It's great, it's got a truly catchy and very, very silly soundtrack to go with. To quote said ost: "me likey dat"

Not that I think it needs to be a competition in the first place, but I think you really need to weigh some of the timing considerations for adapting pretty much a straight musical to a medium like stop-motion. ParaNorman is great, but the challenge is so completely different from what Nightmare Before Christmas had to overcome, with significant overhead necessarily being allocated towards just getting the timing right. Cutting around basically silent or piecemeal scenes is downright easy in comparison. plus beautiful... very much a matter of qualia, innit

Coraline Paranorman Kubo and the 2 Strings Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio These are Stop Motion at the top of their game.

Basically any stop motion movie from Laika Studios would be an ideal watch as have already been mentioned. But also a few others... - Isle of Dogs (2018) from Wes Anderson - Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio (2022) - Tim Burton's Corpse Bride (2005) - Frankenweenie (2012)

PLEASE watch Kubo and the Two Strings, it is absolutely the most underrated and best animated stop motion film.

This is actually my favorite holiday movie and I watch it almost every year between Halloween and Christmas. One thing you may not realize is that Sir Patrick Stewart himself originally did the opening monologue, but it was a bit slower, so the studio had it redone for the movie using the voice actor for Santa to do the opening. However, Stewart's version can be heard on the soundtrack! 🖖 May I also mention that it was an absolute pleasure seeing this with your reaction, Jen. Thank you, and happy holidays! 🎄❤️

Adding another +1 to Kubo and the Two Strings. (And checking it on your request site). Also adding "Corpse Bride".

That color looks awesome on you! Love the red!

(no idea if it ended up being addressed, just the usual spiel) Tim Burton really "only" birthed the movie, with a poem I think. He did the original designs for at least the main characters - and he still was a producer. Plus, why wouldn't you slap an already established filmmaker's name on a project? Well, it definitely confused people because everyone thinks he directed it, but it was Henry Selick and his animator team who really directed and oversaw the production. Selick later did the amazing Coraline I already saw people recommending, for good reason. Screenplay was done by Caroline Thompson, she basically turned the poem into the final script and definitely deserves a good chunk of the credits for creating and embellishing the world. Still some of the best work of just about anyone involved, just one fantastic song after another. Unreal production, too.

Great reaction

Kristin

Coraline is a strange and amazing film!! Jen would love it.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (2022) is a fantastic stop motion film about a seashell with a single googly eye and a pair of miniature shoes, that is both hilarious and deep. Created by a comedian Jenny Slate. It is so incredibly sweet.

It's my christmas eve tradition to watch The Nightmare Before Christmas. Don't mind doing it early this year. ☺️

One of my favorites, I bet you can guess why. I think it actually leans harder towards Christmas but man, I'd love to live in Halloweentown!

Joshua M Freeman

I love Jen's reaction whenever she sees a dog. I hope she watches Cujo someday.

Bernie Zwicky

This has nothing to do with this movie, but I just watched your reaction to Spaceballs and loved it! In your reaction, you asked about watching, the Transformers movies, as well as the Rambo movies. I would love to see you react to both of these…especially the first ones of each franchise! I’ve been watching you for quite a while and I really think you would enjoy them! The other Equalizer movies are also really good! I hope you’re enjoying your holiday season!😊❤️

Always love listening to Danny Elfman here singing the voice of Jack Skellington. Was a fan of his band Oingo Boingo back in the day. Very eclectic is his trademark. 😃

Banes

another stop-motion flick - Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Were Rabbit! a great one.

Scaredy-cat

I second Coraline, it's a great stop motion movie. It's quirky, cute, fun and feature dogs so I don't doubt that Jen will love it.

Scaredy-cat

I've been looking forward to this. I've humming the songs to myself since I saw it in the poll.

Jen Murray

OMG I didn't realize the singing voice was Danny Elfman!

Chris Biebel

Well, it isn't that surprising that Halloween and Christmas would get confused. Ask any mathematician. After all, Oct (31) = Dec (25)... (Base mathematics humor!)

This movie was conceived as production art for Disney when Tim Burton was an junior animator there in the 80's - they just shoved it in their archives because it was too dark. Only after Burton left and became a live action director was it considered for an actual movie. Burton produced. Caroline Thompson adapted it, famous stop motion director, Henry Selick, directed, and Danny Elfman wrote all the songs before the script was even finished.
