I started laughing with joy when you realized that it was Tom, not will, who took over the defiant. 👍

David Brown

They might have thought 'Defiant' would have aired before the release of the movie. No one seems aware that the Enterprise has been destroyed, and stardates place this has happening before the movie.

Curran Dobbs

"Hey, remember that episode of Star Trek where the psychic alien parent of the half-human main character from the preceding series, who is an ambassador, comes on board unknowingly suffering from an older person disease that causes their psychic powers to make the people around them emotionally wonky?" "Which one?"

TC Green

So Defiant is one of my favorites because it is heavily influenced by an old movie I love; "Fail Safe." A flight of American nuclear armed bombers is accidentally sent on a mission to strike Moscow and the US has to help the Soviets try to shoot it down. Henry Fonda plays the President.

Bobby Coolbreeze

I pointed this out in the last episode comments but I was vague as to not spoil the episode for her i suggested that she watch this episode before generation despite airdate order because the star date is actually before the events of the 24th century portion of the movie by like 1-2 months

Bobby Coolbreeze

One of my favorite episodes. This one really hits home about what the Defiant is all about. The look on Dukat’s face when he realizes the Defiant is in Maquis hands lol

rubberkidney

ok how about this...a popcorn queen style 10 best per season for voyager? id be....ok with that.

Fanchman

No, when she is ready, it needs to be the whole series.

rubberkidney

i feel you but im getting bad vibes. just want to keep options open since i see signs that it wont ever happen.

Fanchman

I think she wants to get to the TNG movies faster, which would be slowed tremendously by starting Voyager now.

Rob Nichols

Reactors should watch Fail Safe before Dr. Strangelove.

Fanchman

If she decided to do limited episodes per season, I guess that would be okay; but Jen is a true Trekkie and would enjoy the whole series.

TigerMyth

After that reaction to Ryker, I think you really do need to dive into Voyager at some point. You are one of us. I already figured you were a 100% Trekkie at this point but that reaction confirms it.

Jen Murray

I haven't said anything to suggest I don't want to watch Voyager? I just prefer to focus on one show at a time unless there is a reason within the story to watch together

Jen Murray

Please don't tell me about upcoming things

rubberkidney

alright, im not saying you dont want to im just sensing a vibe so im throwing out options.

Banes

I've been psyched to see the reaction to Defiant. Some shocking moments there, with Tom Riker coming back. And yeah, it's a pretty intriguing plot besides that with the Cardassians. Great episode. Fascination is okay, too. Definitely on the sillier side but it had some good stuff in it. Odo seems like the kind of guy who would suffer in silence with his feelings forever rather than admit it!

rubberkidney

even if i just get a theme song rendition. cant miss that.

Sykonee

Lot's of people say 'Fascination' is one of the Bad Ones of the series, but not for me. Yeah, it's silly, goofy, inconsequential, etc. I find Brooks' directing really leans into the absurdity though, creating more of a fun, fantastical farce than anything we need to take seriously. I'd certainly take a season full of this than anything approaching 'Meridian' again. Fortunately, we get plenty of 'Defiant' type episodes bringing the proper high-stakes action-drama too. ;)

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Look, I'll be honest. Defiant, great episode. Fun, tense, action-y, more Cardassian politics, we get to know the ship a bit better. All great stuff. But really I'm here for Lwaxanna/MBR. She will forever be one of my favourites and I adore every episode she's in. #LetLwaxannaCook

John DiGiantomasso

You made the comment in Defiant about if DS9 comes back to touch on some of these story branches that it is setting up. The answer, as a theme of the series, is that there are very few abandoned branches. You don't know when or where they are going to appear, let alone what direction they will turn when they do show up. But you seem to be a person (like me) that loves it when they do. And that is why DS9 is my favorite Star Trek series of all. And I can confidently say this... Deep into season THREE I think maybe now you are getting close to knowing about half of the cast of players. There are SO many on the periphery now that present really deep story arcs, and so many characters that haven't even been introduced yet! Fasten your seatbelt because you are just now approaching highway speeds. 🫨🫨🫨

TigerMyth

Jen was a little slow on picking up what was going on in the second episode. Come on Jen, Jake went from sullen broken hearted for no reason to love. The Vedick hounding Dax. The O'Briens acting weird. Dax loving Cisco.

Bobby Coolbreeze

My take on Fascination is well it’s all character and we also get another TNG character. That’s 2 in a row. I feel this was not a coincidence since Generations came out at the same time. I used to dislike the Lwxanaa episodes but she has grown on me over the years. They played her too much with the comedy and it sometimes it was too goofy. I can see why Picard always was trying to avoid her. I feel she is better when things are serious. This thing with Odo and Kira is one of the better character relationships on the show. They have a good dynamic and chemistry. I won’t tell you how it goes though out the series but it definitely is one of better character developments on the show.

Bobby Coolbreeze

One more thing about story plots on this show. These two episodes are good examples as they are totally unrelated to each other but the writing is so good that plots though out the series continue and connect out of nowhere and at random. It’s not hard to figure out now as you are going through the series what plots are looming week to week but also do a good job at maintaining the shows episodic format along with overarching storylines. Deep space nine is the first Star Trek show to do this. The little things that are mentioned and minor details sometimes get forgotten and then 20-30 episodes later you like oh shit thats right! This is a very good season. Hard to believe it’s not the best season. Amazing how it just gets better and better.

Bobby Coolbreeze

Voyager ran concurrently with DS9 The two shows were pretty much very separate due to the Voyager premise. They had very few connections but they are set in the same timeframe. I wouldn’t mind if you kept the airdate order or you watched them separately. I do look forward to 2 DS9’s a week! Maybe incorporate one Voyager a week in the near future. Maybe do a poll?

jon bolton

Thank you Jen for early posting. It's 4:50 in the morning in England, after msging good night to my girlfriend who was already asleep, i just checked here on the off chance of 90 minutes with you and my favourite Starfleet crew before bed.

Desmond

Poor Kira. He really takes advantage of her here.

Desmond

But poor Tom Riker too. Being sent to a Cardassian labor camp doesn't sound very nice.

Desmond

Great moment between Sisko and Dukat in that episode too, and you caught it. Sisko tries to bond with Dukat, over the fact that they both have young sons. And Dukat refuses the opening, and just says that his son will only remember that day because a Federation ship invaded his home. Sisko looks disappointed, and walks away from him. Marc Alaimo looks down, just for a second. and it's a great piece of acting because you can tell he does identify with what Sisko was saying, and that he just spurned an attempt to have a closer connection. And almost looks kind of resentful about it, as if he had no choice because of his position in the Cardassian military. Great, subtle bit of acting

Hok'Tar

I see people talking about Jen watching Voyager. If there is even the slightest possibility of Jen watching Voyager then she should absolutely not watch the very last TNG movie before she finishes all of Voyager. You were wondering if there was a reason to watch Voyager at the appropriate time Jen. There is a reason

Hok'Tar

There is a reason to watch to the end of Voyager before you watch the very last TNG movie

jon bolton

Two more episodes that I love! Yes Jen you were right a little while ago when you speculated if Odo had feelings for Kira. He reminds me so much of me as a kid, fancying a girl and being scared to say anything.

Carlos Stevens

Press 1 if you know the relationship between René Auberjonois and M*A*S*H (heh, I just learned today)

Summer

Little things were dropped throughout, the first watch for me I almost liked Fascinations more than Defiant because we had our crew together. Always felt there is a deleted scene from Defiant where O’Brien contacts LaForge and finds out about Tom, if someone knows of this deleted scene I have always wanted to see, if you recall the episode where we met Tom was 20 episodes after O’Brien was last on the Enterprise, so he might not know anything about it and when Tom realized Miles knew Will wanted to stay far away from him. I wish the two episodes after the next two were next, not that I don’t like the next two, but I like the two after better

Bammer

Fun fact, Jonathan Frakes wore Avery Brooks' uniform in Generations because there was not enough production time to make him a new uniform for the film.

Ian

As Jen's said til she's blue in the face she's watching DS9 to completion then making a decision on voyager 🤷

Ian

Enjoyed both episodes as always , any episode with Jen adding her unique awesome commentary on is always a fun watch . Love seeing lwaxanna making an appearance we all know she's not everyone's cup of tea but I think she's great . Odo always looks sad I hope good things are ahead for his character going forward ( NO SPOILERS! ) first time I heard the word obsidian order I knew they sounded bad news , looking forward to finding out more about them in the future . Thanks Jen I'm enjoying this DS9 journey with you so much .

Steve Kaye

Your commentary especially after the Defiant episode makes me so happy! I absolutely love how into all of the lore you are and I seriously can't wait until you see what's to come!

Sonny Smith

Major Kira is 25 during this season of DS9, 26 by the end of the season. She is a lot younger than most people realize.

Curran Dobbs

The actors who played Kira and Bashir were an item at this point.

TheADHDOverlord

I love when you hum the theme song, if only bc it helps to sync up my copy lol

Hok'Tar

Of course she can watch all of DS9 before making a decision on Voyager but if you read my comment, I did not mention DS9. I said Jen should not watch The last TNG movie (Star Trek Nemesis) until after she watches Voyager

Rob Nichols

I sync to the reflections in her glasses.

TheADHDOverlord

Episodes like "Fascination" are just not done much anymore... the Fun Filler Episodes that were some of the Main Drivers for Character Development for long-form TV series back then.

Brett Whittaker

Anyone watching in Australia. DS9 will be leaving Netflix soon, nooooo

Jeff Seely

Probably because Nana Visitor was 37 at the time. She looked great for her age, but she didn't look mid-20s.

Ian

Not just Australia, worldwide outside of the US

Ian

Yeah stops in January here in the UK

Goddess of Empathy

Jen, I so appreciate you singing the intro everything, it's the perfect way to make sure I'm synced up exactly 🤣

Goddess of Empathy

Just commented the exact same thing and then saw you had already commented. Great minds

scott osborne

jen you should of known by now that when Lwaxana Troi is around there is always trouble

William Rosmer

i always love the oh crap look kira gets when bashir (rightfully) goes off on her

William Rosmer

i thought it's been off us netflix since paramount+ began?

Over50Gamer

You know it's both a good and shocking episode when Jen has an "Oh Shit!" moment! 🤣

Eric Rinehart

Ya unfortunately it world wide as paramount decision to not renewal any new contacts with anyone back in 2024 when they finally decided to do there own streaming service and the only place to watch star trek which i get but same time like losing free income monthly and annually from all the other streaming services not just Netflix allow Disney crave in Canada amount the other companies around the world that has star trek dubbed in the languages that they have available in

Marcus Hicks

Yep, just found that out, so went and signed up to Paramount Plus. I have the entire show on DVD box sets, but for some reason my version doesn't sync up properly with Jen's version.

Marcus Hicks

So far, Season 3 has only had one mediocre episode....and that was Meridian. Not even good as a filler episode IMHO. Fascination is a lot of fun, and a great way to de-stress after Defiant.

Clay F

Very much enjoying your reactions to DS9 episodes. Many of these episodes I've seen only once (when initially aired in the 90s). S3E9 Defiant is awesome. Highly entertaining. Tom Riker didn't seem too bad (I like Will Riker). Dukat dialogue is always good. As for S3E10 Fascination, I liked premise and am a fan of Lwaxana episodes, but this episode didn't seem well executed to me. Miles and Keiko are a handsome couple. I like that Odo outwardly showing a liking for Lwaxana.
