Winner of last week's Poll we have a classic 80's action comedy, which I didn't realize was Eddie Murphy's first movie until afterwards. Good chemistry between Eddie and gruff Nick Nolte! Not surprised they made a sequel-- though the reviews don't look great. But that doesn't really matter to me! Any takers?

Movie Runtime: 1:36:35

I watched this movie one day in 1985 (I was 7) when my parents weren’t paying attention. Safe to say I learned a whole new vocabulary that day.

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

Eddie Murphy has been the only SNL cast member to host the show while still a cast member. He hosted after Nick Nolte backed out 😄. Another 48 Hrs is ok, but not as good as the original

Harvey Lee

Haven't seen this in ages , this 'll be a great treat one of the great ones for the whole Buddy cop genre . Good choice Jen .🤘😄

Ian

That thumbnail 😂 haven't seen this one in ages but already know you would of had fun with it , looking forward as always to checking it out , cheers Jen you're the best 🔥🙂

Clay F

Looking forward to your reaction.

Curran Dobbs

Fun Fact: Tasha Yar is played by Bing Crosby's granddaughter.

Ian

Jen's editor is going to be working that mute , bleep and blur button like crazy in this one 😀 looking forward to seeing how the edit comes out 🙂 . Oh and yep that sure was Tasha Jen 🖖

Mr. Writhms

Reggie didn't run away when he had the chance because he only had 6 months left in prison. Escaping custody would put him back in prison for a much longer time. Great reaction, Jen! I always appreciate your love for the music!

Trigger

I would favour a buddy-cop poll over the sequel as there's better movies out there like Stakeout (1987)

JPDotCom23

Yes, watch the sequel, I didn't mind it at all, it was loud and not the best sequel in the world, I think it got bogged down by Eddie's superstar status by that point. Usually, when you put a big comedian like that in front of a camera and expect him to carry the movie with his own improvisation, it doesn't quite work out but since I saw it in the theatre at the time, I think you should watch it. I think you should check out his stand up performance in 'Eddie Murphy Delirious', you'll get a great look at his comedy genius. For Nick Nolte, you should check out 'The Prince of Tides' with Barbara Streisand, which he won an Oscar for, and 'Three Fugitives' with Martin Short.

Clay F

Skip the underwhelming sequel Another 48 Hrs. (1990). I enjoy 48 Hrs. (1982). Sequels I suggest: -The Godfather Part II (1974) -Prey (2022).

jon bolton

Glad you enjoyed it. I knew you'd recognise Tasha. This is my second favourite Eddie Murphy film after Beverly Hills Cop, and second favourite Nick Nolte film after Cape Fear. I hope you do watch the sequel, it's another good one.

Clay F

Enjoyed your reaction including your comments on the score. I love the score. Agree good chemistry between the two leads. I love their arc and the ending. Eddie Murphy received Golden Globe nom for New Star of the Year. Nick Nolte is great in “THE THIN RED LINE” (1998) (WWII) [Terrence Malick]. Based on 1962 autobiographical novel. Nick Nolte good in “Hotel Rwanda” (2004) w/Don Cheadle. Based on true events.

Rob Nichols

Not my top pick on the poll, but a great classic I'm glad you got to see and enjoy. I figured you'd like Horner's score and recognize Tasha. But maybe not recognize Nick Nolte as the voice of Kuill from The Mandalorian, "I have spoken."

spacious_recroom

Nick Nolte stars in Martin Scorsese's "Cape Fear" (1991) alongside Robert De Niro, and is probably one of the best movies Nick Nolte was in. It also inspired an entire Simpsons episode 😁

thomas king

Movie was a big hit at the box office. Murphy was only 20 years old when he filmed this. It was released when he was 21. Sequel is good u should watch it.

Matt

For more films with Nick Nolte I'd recommend Warrior 2011, The Thin Red Line 1998

Clay F

Nick Nolte was good in that.

Opti_Frog

It must be 30 years since i this movie last time. About the only thing i remembered was the Billy Bear bare breasted double blood squibs. I noticed that Billy Bear's lady was Margot Rose who played Jean-Luc Picard's wife Eline in The Inner Light. So that was two future TNG actresses sharing a scene.

Jason Scade

30+ for me. I'm looking forward. :D

Darryl Low

This was a great reaction Jen. Really fun to re-visit this movie. I don't think I've seen it since the VHS era 😅 As someone who loves and collects movie scores, I really love that you are always so appreciative of the soundtracks in movies. This score was very much James Horner's signature sound for this type of movie in the 80s. The drum set, together with the wailing sax, synths and the steel drums alongside the orchestra. You heard it in Commando as well, and if you ever watch Gorky Park, Uncommon Valour, Wolfen, Red Heat and Another 48hrs, you'll instantly recognise the style haha. Thanks for an entertaining video today Jen 😊

Noremac

I wonder what Jen would think of one of Goblin's scores, like in Suspiria or Deep Red.

Jason Scade

Cape Fear is a solid tense thriller. It's brutal though. Contains S.A.

K Dub

I was 11 in 82 when this dropped. The first time introducing me to Sting and "The Police" with the legendary "Roxanne" 🎶🎼🎵🎙(1978) an inner city Oakland Ca across "The Bay" from San Francisco black kid vibin to the birth of rap music at the time but thought if Eddie was singing it I had to find out who these dudes were.🤦‍♂️🤣😆Excellent👌 reaction. Thank you.🫵👏🫡

RJ MacReady

I was 2 when this came out lol. A classic and the second one may be even better!

Ortizmo

Yes, they made a sequel. Not as good as the first but not terrible. Horner returns to score the film. Incidentally, Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) is one of three Trek veterans appearing in this. Her roommate played by Margot Rose was Picard's "wife" in "The Inner Light" . Jonathan Banks, "Al" in the beginning of the movie, appeared in the first season DS9 episode "Battle Lines".

Carlos Stevens

rrrRRRRROOOOOXXXXXAAANNNE... (Seriously, that was Eddie Murphy at his most hilarious)

Carlos Stevens

Cops (i.e. street cops) do not wear shoulder holsters. However, Detectives still do wear shoulder holsters.

Carlos Stevens

OK... if your really REALLY interested... I do remember from an interview that Eddie Murphy did, back in the day... that he pulled inspiration from the Bill Cosby/Sydney Poitier team up movies (A Piece Of The Action...Uptown Saturday Night, and Let's Do It Again). All great movies, and worth putting on your watch list. So we're talking late '70s early '80s time frame. If you enjoyed this, I guarantee you'll enjoy those too.

Thomas Yanez

The exercise show that was showing on a TV was a real thing back in the day. A guy named Ron Harris created an exercise video series called "Aerobicise" on cable, and later a network TV version called "20 Minute Workout" that was just pretty ladies, no talking, exercising on a rotating white floor in a white room filmed from various angles. Eventually, the guy revived it in an international/Playboy version that had the same look (white rotating floor with girls exercising) except they forgot to put on their leotards.

Colin Simpson

The next movie director Walter Hill made was Streets of Fire which has an amazing soundtrack. Commercially it was a flop but it's now considered a cult classic.

Bammer

"Girl, get down! Put your boobs away." - Jen 🤣🤣🤣

Bammer

Jonathan Banks is also in "Beverly Hills Cop" as Victor Maitland's right hand henchman.

Ortizmo

Yeah. The poor guy who wound up wearing the buffet at The Harrow Club.

Thadman

Did I miss the watch along? I only see the link to the sync copy. It's blurred.

Jason Scade

The 1970s Suspiria will absolutely freak her out, it's very creepy. The recent-ish remake even more so. (Horror / occult)

Jason Scade

Great reaction, lots of laughs, pretty grim too though (it was the early 80s). I'd not seen this in decades, it holds up very well - apart from some of the language. Yes, it was a massive hit. Wiki says it was the 7th biggest earning film of that year. Btw, the actor who played the Indian villain character was also in Arnie's strike-team in Predator. Walter Hill, is a well respected director, he usually does dark, gritty action / thrillers. He has written a bunch of famous movie scripts too and also is a producer. He produced/exec produced Alien, Aliens and Alien 3, also being a writer for the latter. I'd recommend all of these by him; - Hard Times (drama/action/sport. Illegal bare knuckle boxing in Depression Era America) - The Getaway [1972] (Crime/action. Hill as writer, dir by Sam Peckinpah) - The Driver (crime) - The Warriors (gang crime/drama) - The Long Riders (Revisionist Western) - Southern Comfort (Military cat & mouse, wilderness survival) - Brewster's Millions (his only comedy? stars Richard Pryor ♥ and John Candy ♥) - Red Heat (80s Arnie cop/crime/action that you've not yet seen) - Extreme Prejudice (80s neo-Western/action. Some cast of bad-asses in it! Nick Nolte, Clancy Brown, Michael Ironside, Powers Boothe. - Trespass (crime/thriller) Stars Bill Paxton ♥ - Geronimo: An American Legend (Western) - The Getaway [1994] (remake of the 70s crime/action) - Last Man Standing (neo-Western action. Bruce Willis ♥) - Alien 3 (Hill as writer / producer) - HBO's Deadwood (dir. episode #1 only) Deadwood is the greatest Revisionist Western ever made for tv. It's Shakespearean in writing, depth, scope, quality, etc. It features real historical people of note (and infamy) in the story; Marshall Seth Bullock (ret.), Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, local crime boss Al Swearengen, etc. --- Unrelated to Walter Hill's catalog, a great 80s Nick Nolte comedy is 'Down and Out in Beverly Hills'. It's a reversal of fortune comedy and a remake of the original French version of the story, which was much celebrated, I believe. Very funny movie! Also stars Richard Dreyfuss and Bette Midler. ♥

crazyivan

My favorite Nick Note flick was always North Dallas Forty (1979), football drama with Mac Davis.
