Finishing off an unofficial trilogy of Charlton Heston 60-70's dystopia sci fi!

This one was absolutely dripping 70's and I dug it. I've heard this one is an adaptation of a story which was first adapted in 1964 as The Last Man on Earth and in 2007 as I Am Legend. I would definitely be interested to check out those versions of the story if you guys are down?

I love that you keep reacting to these old sci-fi classics. They’ve been really entertaining and enjoyable, thanks Jen! 🔥

Awesome Jen. I've been looking forward to watching this with you . This was one of those movies that was always on late night tv and I always tried to catch it. It's so atmospheric and eerie, especially all those empty streets. The film crew was up at the crack of dawn to get most of those shots haha. Last Man on Earth and I Am Legend are also great movies in their own right too. Would be fun to watch you check them out and compare the very different styles of filmmaking and storytelling 😊

Michael Tuffin

Thanks for covering some older films.

Harvey Lee

Yesss Omega Man unofficially part of a post apocalyptic trilogy for me including Soylent Green and even Planet of the Apes as well . All starring Charlton Heston Good choice Jen I love how you respect older classics and it shows in your reactions 🔥🤘

Rob Nichols

The Last Man on Earth starred Vincent Price, absolutely check it out. I want to thank you for the appreciation and respect you've been showing to these classic sci-fi's, your channel is looking more and more like my childhood.

Whoo Hoo! Looking forward to watching this later on tonight! Thank you so much for watching and reacting to these classic Science Fiction movies! As far as whether to watch the other two movies based on Richard Matheson's novel, "I Am Legend", it's a mixed bag. The best, and most faithful adaptation of Richard Matheson’s source material is “The Last Man on Earth” (1964), starring Vincent Price. And yes, it fully embraces the ending of the book. “The Omega Man” (1971), starring Charlton Heston, isn’t really a true adaptation of the book, but more a remake of “The Last Man on Earth”. Likewise, “I Am Legend” (2007) starring Will Smith is a remake of “The Omega Man”. With remakes of remakes you will find differences, some minor, some major. But you will find yourself further and further away from the source material. For what it's worth, I would rank them in reverse order of their release - "The Last Man on Earth", then "The Omega Man", and finally, "I Am Legend". While Will Smith's version carries the name, I just can't recommend it. Alternate version or not.

Silent Running (1972) is a good watch that vibes well with the Heston trilogy. It stars a young Bruce Dern, and has an interesting message for today's world.

Re: "helicopter", you were right the first time. The craft Howard Hughes flew in The Rocketeer to rescue Cliff and Jenny from the burning Zeppelin was an autogyro.

Thanks Jen! Yes please watch The Last Man on Earth!

My understanding, I Am Legend pays ohmage to The Omega Man, and not giving anything away, I could see it in many scene's. I would definitely love if you do 'I Am Legend' Jen. Great film imop. As for Charlton Heston, that man seems to love to have his shirt off in his films. You had me laughing Jen every time you commented on it. And it's nice to see someone notice the instrumentation in detail, especially the Bass Clarinet (dear to my heart) which I played thru out High School many many moons ago, the way you do. Thank you for doing another Classic.

Great Saturday night watch! Why do I always think of The Police song when I see this title? I think that music is considered 70’s soul jazz. It’s still pretty popular today and influences modern music. Panavision is a company that developed wide screen lenses and cameras. Pretty revolutionary tech for the time.

This was one of my favorite movies in the seventies as a teenager. Because of this movie I saw "I am legend" in the theater so I am a yes to "I am Legend"

I love these classic sci-fi reactions from you Jen. A lot of people today just dismiss them, but you get totally invested in the characters, the story and the mood of them, and you appreciate what they were able to create at the time. They are so enjoyable to watch 😊 Ron Grainer's score for this film was perfect. Unassuming at times, but then takes front and centre and perfectly compliments the action. Ron Grainer also composed the theme for Dr. Who in 1963, which has been reworked throughout the years, right up to the modern era. Thanks for another awesome reaction Jen 😊

Jen, do you remember the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror VIII, where they parodied/paid homage to The Omega Man? It was one of the writers' favorite movies as a kid.

Zapp Rowsdower

And it served as some inspiration for Mystery Science Theater 3000. I won't list the ways to avoid any spoilage.

That Police song is awesome and that album is one of my lifetime favorites.

Jen if you want another 70s movie with Charlton Heston watch Beneth the Planet of the Apes 1970. It is not considered that good of a movie which is why it gets left out. However the 3rd movie Escape from the Planet of the Apes is a good movie, also the 4th Conquest of, which shows how the Apes took over. Both Escape and Conquest take place in modern day. The 5th Battle for is not that good but you'll want to see how it all ends. In older movies the hero could die like anyone else. Today you know their not going to die before the movie starts.

Geoff S.

My favorite album by them is either Ghost In the Machine or Synchronicity.

Matt

If your interested some great dystopian shows I'd recommend.. THE LEFTOVERS (3 seasons 28 eps) STATION ELEVEN (miniseries 10 eps) PLURIBUS (10 eps so far with more to come)

Stephen Koehler

I loved Station Eleven! Probably one of the best of these kind of stories to come along in years.

Matt

Absolutely agree, its super underrated

Another great reaction Jen. I Am Legend is great along with Last Man on Earth staring the great Vincent Price. Watching both would be a great trip. Last Man on Earth follows the book a bit more closely, and is in black and white. It was filmed entirely in Italy with Price as the sole American in the production. It doesn't take away from the story, and gives the film a certain alien vibe. Richard Mathasion's book is great and I would urge you to read it for some insight into all versions of this story. I would hope to see a Silent Running reaction from you someday as there are very few reactions to it. Not only the story, but the visual effects which still stand up today, provided the skill set for many of the effects people who worked on Silent Running to go on to the effects heavy Close Encounters and Star Wars. Silent Running was directed by Douglas Trumbull who went on to supervise the effects for Close Encounters. Trumbull also directed Brainstorm, which had so many issues, among them the passing of it's star Natalie Wood shortly before principal photography was completed. Trumbull never directed another film after that, but his SFX artistry is unparalleled.
