Christian Becker

Greetings, and thank you for providing my Friday evening entertainment.

Summer

Yay! Be there shortly

WinkNudgeNudge

Yeah. That's a rough OB episode for SURE. Unlike the mirror universe episodes even though they're a bit silly. Haha.

TigerMyth

My favorite DS9 episode. The concept is so brutal. That was one heck of a horrible ordeal for O'Brien.

Eirik

OB is the DS9 punching bag. He's an audience surrogate, the everyman we can relate to. So when he gets the stick, we feel it more. Worf was the TNG punching bag, though for a different reason. Knock out the strong warrior to show strong the naughty nasties of the week were. Just like with the red shirts, it became it's own trope. https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/TheWorfEffect

Zapp Rowsdower

She doesn't want to know anything about future episodes.

Curran Dobbs

She already knows about OB Must Suffer episodes.

Dean

DS9 does some very effective episodes about PTSD which was starting to be explored much more in the scientific community in the 90’s and this is one of the best examples of that. It really does rewire your brain in incredibly horrific ways that takes a lot of hard work and professional help to address. It can be especially insidious because it can almost be invisible to the patient as their trauma reactions and altered personality don’t necessarily *feel* different to them no matter how much their friends, family, and professionals can clearly see it.

Desmond

Agree. O'Brien will suffer some more, but this is the one that haunts me.

Summer

Hard time is hard but good. As for the second a better mirror universe episode from someone who hates the mirror universe

Julian San

Damn, being told you’ll enjoy another installment of “O’Brien Goes Through Hell” is, as the kids say, diabolical.

Sykonee

'Shattered Mirror' feels like two different scripts that got weirdly mashed together. On the drama side, you have a proper re-do of Sisko dealing with his dead wife being 'alive', and with the added wrinkle of now Jake being aware of Jennifer, plus her coming to terms with a 'what could have been' scenario for herself. That's a great use of the Mirror Universe, and wish we'd gotten more of it. Then there's the other half, where DS9 goes Full Star Wars with Rebels and Evil Empire (Alliance), even Regent Worf going a little Darth Vader. Not to mention a ship battle that may as well be the Millennium Falcon and Luke's X-Wing taking on a green Star Destroyer! Again, a lot of fun, but man, then you get hit with the Sisko drama right after. Don't know if should be cheering or crying, y'know? ('Hard Time'? Oh, tears all the way...)

Dean

I like the Mirror Universe in the way that it’s used in DS9 as just sort of a fun “let’s let the actors get a bit silly without larger Prime Universe consequences”. I don’t think I’d like it as much if they did more than one a season though as sometimes it does feel like a distraction from the main plots. That said, Evil Kira is 🔥

Andrew Skow

Maybe she knows OB Must Suffer but saying "this is the best" or "this is the strongest" or "this is the least" or "this is the most" sets expectations for (a.k.a. spoils) future episodes, even if you aren't revealing plot points. Just don't include future episodes in your comparisons.

Jeremy Nuss

I don't care for the mirror universe as a concept, and glad it's used sparingly. That being said, Evil Kira is the best. I like her more than Good Kira and I bet Nana Visitor really liked playing her. Evil Worf is fun too, but I kinda feel like he is just Good Worf's inner monologue vocalized. lol

William McRae

As a concept, the mirror universe gives the DS9 cast the opportunity to cut loose and have fun with their alter ego counterparts with Nana Visitor getting the lion's share of the enjoyment and the actress makes the most of it. That said, this story should be called "The Retraumasation of Jake Sisko" who has to meet AND lose his mother (again) under tragic circumstances.

TigerMyth

I wasn't a huge fan of early Enterprise but it grew on me. I wasn't a big fan of this one. Sisko bungled this one a bit. Or I should say the writers did.

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

We need more Colm Meaney in the channel! Moviewise we only have Con Air and Under Siege. We need to watch The Commitments, The Snapper and The Van 😁

Desmond

Hard Time is like a Black Mirror episode, decades before Black Mirror. Really does a great job showing how an experience like that would affect a person. And a surprisingly direct scene with O'Brien on the verge of pulling the trigger, very well acted by Meaney and Siddig.

Desmond

You definitely can't take the mirror universe episodes too seriously. Especially after this one...

Kristin

I enjoy Enterprise. While it's not top tier like TOS/TBG/DS9, its still solid entry in the trek universe. She could watch Voyager and Enterprise, side by side with no problem.

TigerMyth

By the time it was cancelled, i liked Enterprise. It just took a few years to grow on me. To date Jen hasn't committed to more Trek. I hope she does but she is the only one who can see her numbers from before Trek and after Trek to see how it affects her bottom line. I have a feeling she will end up watching Voyager just to see a female captain. I am looking forward to Voyager because i think I've only seen it twice whereas I've seen TNG and DS9 several complete full viewings.

Lee

During a good part of DS9's run, Colm Meaney took time off to make movies. So whenever the producers had the chance, they put O'Brien through the wringer. The motto in the writer's room was "O'Brien Must Suffer." This wasn't punitive; as the "everyman with a family," it meant more when he was under the gun. One of the reasons I dislike DS9's approach to the Mirror Universe is that the production team forgot it was meant to mirror the prime universe. Kirk took over command of the Enterprise from Christopher Pike in both versions, but Mirror Kirk had to assassinate him to make it happen. In the case of Mirror Jennifer, her death makes sense, as it reflects the death of Prime Jennifer. But the deaths of Mirror Quark, Rom & Nog have no resonance in the prime universe. It just seemed like one of those "shock value" decisions that made no narrative sense otherwise.

Bobby Coolbreeze

Powerful O’Brien episode. Deals with what it’s like for ex-cons who get out back into society and depression and suicidal tendencies. DS9 develops these characters like no one can.

Bobby Coolbreeze

Mirror universe episodes are fun and wild. We literally see the opposite side of our favorite characters. This one was especially good with evil Worf and more Defiant action!

John DiGiantomasso

I don't see DS9 S4 17-18 as a post. I will look for it on the collections page!

Ian

That's strange It's there on my end 9th April 🤷

John DiGiantomasso

Right. I did and watched it yesterday. It never showed up last weekend, and still doesn't appear in your posts on my devices. Very strange. But BIG BONUS: I get FOUR DS9s this weekend! 😃

Ian Fleming

Season Four is (rightly) considered to be top tier Trek. Episodes like Hard Time make it easy to see why it is held in such high regard.

Ian Fleming

STFU with the damn spoilers! You people make me sick. Why do you have to ruin everything?

TigerMyth

Spoliers? Geez, Nothing I said was a spoiler. Ruin everything? It is a 20 year old show and I didn't give any details. You need to chill out. 25 year old show and she hasn't even committed to watching it.

William Rosmer

mirror kira is angry too. she's just angry AND horny.

John DiGiantomasso

I love Hard Time. Like you observed it has much in common with Inner Light, just very dark. There is also a classic tv series that had a similar psychiatric breakdown in its series finale, where the hero does something terrible that he can't accept. (Don't know if you will ever watch it, so I won't spoil it and say which.)

Senzu Bean

For friday we have 'The Muse' and 'For the cause'. You might like The Muse a bit more than other people for 'reasons'. But For the Cause is considered as one of the best in season 4. Hope you enjoy it, Jen.

Chaos T

What's scary about "Hard Time" is the technology shown is not too far off from what we have now and tech companies are working on. This is one of the episodes I suggest to people to watch who are interested in getting into DS9.

Over50Gamer

Before I even watch this, I have to say that is a very appropriate expression on your face in the thumbnail, regarding "Hard Time". It hit hard and dealt with PTSD and trauma and depression in such a serious way! EDIT after the episode: all i can say is this is one of the very few, if any, episodes that made me cry and want to hug the main character. I cried even harder when Molly hugged his leg and I said, "See?! Molly still loves you!"

Marcus Hicks

Hard Time always gets me tearing up over OB's suffering 😭
