John

Love this movie! Definitely watching tonight after work.

Dylan

This movie made me cry…. A Godzilla movie made me cry! These are the end times!

Dylan

As a near-lifelong Godzilla fan, I feel that this is the best Godzilla film ever made. No other film in this franchise has given me the emotional reaction that I got from this.

WinkNudgeNudge

ooOOoo. Didn't know this one was coming! I've been trying to get ANYONE to watch this one with me again! I'm pretty happy to have you along!

Ian

Wow so many alerts on my phone Jen's on fire today wow wow wow so much to watch amazing stuff Jen 🔥🔥🔥

Rob Nichols

Definitely waiting for the sequel. As for others the original is also very good. Just be sure to watch the original Japanese version, the American release had extra scenes with Raymond Burr added and it ruined the story. Really anxious to watch this one with you 🦖

Mastervodo

Been waiting all week for this one! Love this movie, going to watch the sequel when it comes out! None of the other Godzilla movies are like this one, but there are a couple Godzilla films out there that are entertaining. Also Peter Jackson's King Kong is worth it too, if you want a good "monster" movie with a bit of heart! Also want to be the 1st to tell you that this movie was made for less than $15m USD. Love everything you do Jen!

Geoff S.

I have a soft spot for the old school Godzilla from the 60's and 70's. Movies like Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla and a few others. Lots more monsters are introduced and mixed with sci fi stuff too. Mechagodzilla scared the crap out of me as a kid.

Mastervodo

That dino emoji is cuuute.

Danny Steele

here is my list of the best Godzilla movies, as someone that has seen all of them, I would list Godzilla(1954) Mothra vs. Godzilla(1964), Ghidorah, the Three Headed Monster(1964), Invasion of Astro-Monster, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs MechGodzilla, Terror of MechaGodzilla, all of the Heisei( 1984-1995), “Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack”Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla , Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., Shin Godzilla as the best Godzilla movies and would make a great Godzilla marathon. I would also recommend that you watch “ The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms” which inspired Godzilla and features the amazing work of Ray Harryhausen.

Senzu Bean

Most Godzilla movies are about a monster with people. Godzilla minus one is a movie about people with a monster. It's also masterfully done, it captures the essence of the original movie, shows the raw emotion of the people and portrays Godzilla as a force of nature instead of an ally or enemy.

Harvey Lee

I grew up with the Godzilla movies and have seen a number of them , i remember the ''man in the rubber suit ''era for anyone who grew up with that they would know what i mean . i 've seen the more recent Hollyood versions as well with better effects of couse but the original in '54 is more serious in tone that one might expect , and this is a modern take on it Somehow Godzilla minus one slipped past my radar . you could say it was Godzilla minus me 😄 so this will be my first time watching so grateful i get to watch this with JEN 😄🤘

MattN

yay!! ive been hoping youd watch this for a while!! I love this movie SO much

Rob Nichols

For anyone who syncs their own copy and would prefer the dubbed version, it'll work. The cuts are identical, the dubbed just has extra time at the end after the credits.

Chad Perley

I’m happy that this won the poll! It also gives me an excuse to sync up the excellent black and white version of the film. I loved seeing Minus One at the movie theatre, but it really bummed me out that the limited theatrical release of Minus One Minus Color never made it to my city.

Kane

OMG I'm so excited to watch this later. I've been a Godzilla fan my whole life, this is absolutely top tier.

Christopher Lamont Harris

I'm really surprised that you've never saw Godzilla movie, well if you love this one maybe you will check out others

Danny Steele

Same, I used to watch a couple VHS tapes recorded from one of those TNT marathons on repeat and I watched them so much that my parents had to literally take them away from me. I own all of them. The Showa MechaGodzilla was one of my favorites because he was so cool to child me.

Geoff S.

I had a movie theater closed for a matinee on my birthday when I was 10 and we all watched Destroy All Monsters

Tony Bain

I'm sure others will say this in comments but Godzilla has often been used as a metaphor regarding nuclear weapons (especially Hiroshima and Nagasaki) and the suffering war caused on the Japanese people. There were between 150,000 to over 240,000 casualties during those nuclear attacks. Not all the older movies are metaphor filled and many have gone for monster destruction or monster vs monster at the core, but with these recent versions they have used a tone more serious. I think you had went into this expecting more a Western monster movie type vibe (understandably as you say you've never seen any Godzilla movies). This version steered away from monster fun mayhem.

Mastervodo

This is so different than any other Godzilla movie, and it deserves every praise heaped upon it!

Tony Bain

I'm not one of these guys to go being all arrogant in the comments asserting this n that as how it is...BUT....Godzilla?, i think i could take him.

John DiGiantomasso

Explaining the fish: fish have "bladders" filled with air used for bouyancy. If deep water fish come up too fast, their bladders hyper-expand, damage internal organs, and protrude from their mouths. That is what you saw. The plane: a real late war prototype named the "Shinden." Ejector seat would keep a pilot bailing out from being chopped up by the propeller in the rear. The blue: the scene in one of the first clips was "Operation Crossroads" - the US Atomic bomb tests in the Bikini Atoll in 1946. Movie shows Godzilla being "lit up" implying these tests irradiated and mutated him with Atomic power. Ginza: Implied that blue Godzillabreath caused an atomic blast. Movie showed mushroom cloud from below. Black rain at end was result of blast; pressure wave causes rain, and it picks up ash on the way down. Accurate a-bomb aftermath. Not a good Godzilla movie. Not a good Monster movie. A good movie. Period. Better than anything out of Hollywood the past few years.

Matt

Always loved Godzilla films even the 98 one, but Minus One is definitely my favorite

TC Green

My favorite Godzilla heck one of my favorite movie period.

Jon Johns

Jen!! Murray!! OMG. My favorite movie from 2023, and in my top 3 films of all time! I saw it 5 times in theater (rumble seats? Blech). I then watched it 4-5 times streaming at home (I really wanted to see the different subtitles by Amazon vs netflix, etc) and then had to watch -colir version 😂. Then, when I got the 4K special edition from Japan, I had to watch the true 4K version! But then, of course, all the reaction videos, 184, currently on my playlist on YouTube, but more than a dozen have been removed for copyright, and haven't been re edited 😭. So, yeah, I've seen this movie more than any other in my life. Both Stephen spielberg, and Tom Cruise praise this film. Spielberg watched it 3 times in theater the first weekend. The director of this movie gave Spielberg a special 'gold' 6" model of this Godzilla. 🥳

Jon Johns

This film gracefully honors the original '54 Godzilla with a few homages (I won't spoil it for you). The new one is coming this November! (Godzilla Minus Zero) I'm very excited.

Jon Johns

Tokyo was not a target for any atom bombs, but it was heavily fire-bombed, and the destruction of the homes when Kiochi arrives home shows that. So many orphans 😭. I wish Akira Kurosawa were still alive to see this film and weigh in his thoughts.

Jon Johns

Me too! The '98 version is some of the finest trash 😂, so much fun!

Jon Johns

I hope this is not any kind of spoiler, but, I saw the '54 version as a truly metaphoric reference to the bombs. But as the films progressed, I feel like they saw that nuclear power was their ally, helping them fight their economic enemies. 🤷‍♂️ I can't really describe this concept better with out spoiling a bunch of subsequent films 😂.

Jon Johns

Wow, Harvey, I am so jealous! I wish I could see it again for the first time... I hope you like it! Those rubber suits had concrete boots, I think 😂.

Jon Johns

A triumph! On a shoestring budget, too!

Jon Johns

Peter Jackson's King Kong is a great homage to the '33 version, I love it!

Jon Johns

Jen Murray!! Ark - uh - pell - uh - go. Archipelago.

Yann Laliberte

Can we still expect the Seinfeld bloopers video or was it cancelled and I missed it?

Danny Steele

Kurosawa would be interesting but I would love to hear Ishirō Honda’s ( who directed the original 1954 version and helped create the character) thoughts on this film. Tokyo along with most of Japan’s cities were destroyed by the US firebombing campaign.

Jon Johns

The director, Takashi Yamazaki, pays homage to a handful of other films, including Jaws, Dunkirk, and more. Some of the music in this is very similar to dunkirk's score. Whenever Godzilla is injured, by bombs, fire, etc, he (she?) kind of evolves. Grows, at least. And when he's too close to his own heat ray blast, he injured himself. I don't believe that in this film, when he was just a big dinosaur creature around Odo Island, I don't think he had heat ray? But I'll bet he had improved healing, slightly. The nuclear blast really affected Godzilla, giving him enhanced powers, faster regenerative healing (like Wolverine!) and a massive growth spurt.

Danny Steele

The metaphor was extremely intentional, because it served as both a commentary and a metaphor for the bomb. The 1954 Godzilla film was the first film to even talk about it because of the censorship that was enforced by the US occupation

Tony Bain

I haven't seen loads of the older Godzilla movies but have seen a few. I have a few on VHS that I've had for years. I could see that Jen didn't know much about Godzilla and I think it was far more serious in tone than she had been expecting.

Jon Johns

Fun Fact! The little girl, Akiko, portrayed beautifully by actress Sae Nagatani, was very attached to the actor who played the boat captain, Kuranosuke Sasaki. In several scenes, when they were resetting lights, or cameras, she would wobble over to him and sit in his lap. 🤗

TigerMyth

You should have started with big dumb monster movie man in rubber suit. This is an actual good movie that just happens to have a monster in it whereas most if not all of the other Godzilla movies are filled with dumb human stories, lots of overacting and nonsensical plots. Even with your joy for disaster flicks and monster movies it won't be easy to sit through Son of Godzilla after seeing this one. lol.

Jon Johns

There is a fun fan theory about the blue spikes: when they are 'in' they act like nuclear reactor control rods, but when they pop out, they 'release' the nuclear power... It has always been a traditional thing for Godzilla throughout the years to have a tail 'buildup' before he blows his heatray, I think.

Jon Johns

Danny, I think you can find some video interviews with him online? I know many of the still living people who worked on the OG film talked about this one during the marketing tour.

Jon Johns

Good question!!!

Danny Steele

Unfortunately Honda passed away in 1993. All of his kaiju movies have a message in them, from nuclear weapons , anti-bullying, the evils of greed.

Jen Murray

Yes, as I said my schedule is all out of whack this week. It is coming. I apologize.

Daniel Conderman

Personally, I like Millennium Era (1999–2004) the best. Godzilla 2000: Millennium (1999) Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack(2001) Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003) Godzilla: Final Wars (2004) Final Wars just kicks soooo much ass. When that movie came out I just could not believe how great it was. It was supposed to be the best as a send off to rest the character and not produce any movies for awhile. It totally is. You see Godzilla just beat so much monster ass its the best.

Jon Johns

The dog yelp always gets me

Danny Steele

Hearing them reuse some of the classic music from Akira Ifukube is just so perfect and is beautiful. We hear the music from 1964’s Mothra vs Godzilla when Godzilla first appeared in Tokyo, around the 1 hour mark. The theme song from the original movie that has become basically Godzilla’s song is played though the climax of the movie. The roar is basically the original roar from 1954 which was created by Ikfukube rubbing a leather glove against a double bass with loosened strings and then slowing it down.

Danny Steele

Especially during Godzilla rampage though Tokyo. The reporter who keeps reporting on the attack is an wonderful homage to the 1954 movie

Danny Steele

I remember that the theater went nuts when Godzilla started charging up his atomic breath( which is what it is technically called and it has remained decently consistent throughout the years), because everyone knew what was coming.

TigerMyth

As much as I like the movie, the sound editing was terrible when they finally unleashed the old theme music. All you can hear is things breaking / screams.

Joe Blankenship

Yeah, you set the bar pretty high by starting with this one. I loved watching the old 60s and 70s Godzillas on TV as a kid. They're really campy and fun. And I liked watching the dubbed voices not matching their mouths. But yeah, this is easily the best Godzilla movie. The US version from 1998 is another movie, and the newer one from 2014 is really good and it's got a bunch of sequels with Kong and what not. And you've definitely heard that "Godzilla theme" all over in pop culture references. Also, check out "Godzilla" by Blue Oyster Cult.

Mark T

I want to watch this again just to learn how to say "persistant bugger" in Japanese. Its a line that sums up every monster movie.

Mastervodo

Someone posted that song in the music section of Discord, actually!

Sykonee

The remarkable thing about Godzilla movies is just how versatile they can be. Whether as grim metaphors dealing with serious topics (catastrophe, PTSD, etc) or campy romps relishing in kaiju destruction. This one for sure swings far to one side of that spectrum, which I believe was needed after Hollywood had their 'Monsterverse' fun for a while.

Mark T

I want to watch this again just so I can learn to say "persistant bugger" in Japanese. It's a line that sums up every monster in every monster movie.

ioma

I guess King Kong (2005) might have a monster or two in it. And no, it's not the rather large ape playing Kong.

Major Peril

Great reaction to this awesome movie! Love all these Godzilla movies, old and new. Just a lot of fun and yes, you should see them all. If you have any interest in seeing the newer stuff, you might try the “MonsterVerse” films. They may not be for everyone, but I’ve enjoyed them. What I liked the most was the way they weaved the story of the Monarch organization throughout the films and in particular the TV series. If you do have an interest, I might suggest maybe chronological timeline order if you decide to watch the Monarch series (some exposition about Monarch is revealed in the first two movies), otherwise watch them in release order, or whatever order you wish. 😃 - Kong: Skull Island (2017) - Godzilla (2014) - Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023) (Series) - set after G-day 2014, but explores the history of Monarch from 1946 onward - Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) - Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (2024)

Lorenzo Turner

The Host (2006) is a good Korean monster movie by Bong Joon Ho. Most people know him from the oscar winner Parasite

Rick Rodriguez

This wll be the first time I watch a movie for the first time along with Jen.

D.A.V.E.

It's definitely not a bad place to start.
