Ok wow this one blew me away! What an epic adventure that touches on some really deep stuff for a kids movie! No way I would've made it through this one as a kid though, it broke my heart and was surprisingly dark and scary in some parts! I saw there are a couple of sequels, are they any good? What other 80's fantasy should we check out?

Woo! Barely beat the clock on this one. Dude, WTF is the dad making in the initial scene? He pours orange juice into a blender, cracks an egg into it, mixes it up, and then drinks that vile crap. What is happening? There is definitely The NeverEnding Story 2. The guy who played Bastian is Jonathan Brandis, which is sad because he was a really talented actor, but he took his life later on (I think in the early 2000s). He was a great actor, would have had an amazing later career, for sure. Some people don't really like the movie, but I do. I think it's good. Check it out sometime for sure. I remember reading the book one time. I was stuck(waiting while Mom did something somewhere else in the building) in this old, super book-smelling library and thought, "Man, I might as well read The NeverEnding Story." I was pretty young, so I don't really remember much. I just recall that the book seemed a lot more similar to the plot of The NeverEnding Story II than it did to the first movie. I don't know how much they mixed up there, but I thought the book was alright. The movie was probably better; it definitely made more of an impression on me, for sure.

I haven’t watched this reaction yet but we all know what the most anticipated scene is 😂

Kristen

I needed this today, currently awaiting a snow storm for Saskatchewan’s 6th winter 😂 this is the perfect thing to lock myself inside with and be cosy with my dogs today!

Ian

Yeah this one gets one in the feels your thumbnail says it all Jen 🫂 been looking forward to this since it won the poll , first edit to finish then futurama though , then get cosy like the kid and enjoy the ride 🔥✨🙂

Aaron

The film that scarred a generation.

Dylan

I’m 36 years old, and it doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen this movie. I still cry every time during the Artax scene.

I've heard about this being a breakfast for many people, but never seen it irl

Erik Lundmark

You'll Love the book, it needs to go on your reading list, Now. That goes for everyone here!

Vina

I'm so glad you did the international version! The German version has a more classical style score which is really good but IMO lacks the panache of the more electronic score, but is also about 10 minutes shorter, has 1 or 2 scenes with some VERY janky special effects of Falcor flying, and for some very weird reason the voice of Teeny Weeny (the guy with the racing snail) has a weird twangy southern accent This is probably my #1 favorite movie from childhood, I wanted to be the Childlike Empress, she was so magical!

rubberkidney

An egg—a raw egg scrambled with acidic as fuck orange juice. That sounds literally like maybe the most disgusting thing that has ever been conceived as a consumable thing.

Mastervodo

The exact right thumbnail! ARTAAAAAX!

I lived in Alaska; our seasons were Alomst Winter, Winter, Still Winter, and Spring! 😃

This is the original Orange Julius recipe - a raw egg or egg white blended with orange juice. They dont do it anymore bc in the US (and maybe Canada?) industrial farming makes eating raw eggs unsafe I've heard people say this is supposed to be a hangover cure - indicating the father had been drinking the night before - but I've not heard of it used for hangovers. There IS a raw egg recipe, called a Prairie Oyster which is a raw egg with Worcestershire sauce, vinegar and/or hot sauce, salt, and ground black pepper, which IS supposed to be a hangover cure.

Joel

I am 46 years old, and I still lose it when Artax dies every single time

JustSomeDude

"I'm still thinking about the horse!" - It's okay. Give it 35 years and you'll still randomly think about Artax. "Does she mean me?" - And we can now take that another degree further and we're watching you watch Bastian read the Neverending story. Another great reaction in the Jenaissance. Some other movies to check out in a similar adventure-esque vein: (As I get more monthly adds, I'll try to make sure they're on your voting site) Labyrinth (1986 - THE David Bowie, fun adventure, ofc great music) Pan's Labyrinth (2006) (no relation - WAY different from previously mentioned Labyrinth) The Dark Crystal (1982) Willow (1988 - Val Kilmer, fun adventure) Stardust (2007 - Charlie Cox's first big role (Daredevil)) Dragonheart (1996 - Dennis Quaid, Sean Connery) Legend (1985 - Dir. Ridley Scott, incredible Tim Curry & cinematography) Time Bandits (1981 - Dir. Terry Gilliam) The Color of Magic (2008, miniseries 2 eps - Sean Astin, unique adventure based on books)

One of the music composers, Giorgio Morodor, is considered the father of disco music and Euro dance music. He pioneered synth music and his writing credits are for some the biggest names in music ever. He wrote "Take My Breath Away" for Top Gun and "What A Feeling" for Flashdance. And the music for the movie Scarface! I hope you get around to Legend (1985) with Tom Cruise at some point. It's everything you could ever want in a fantasy and unicorns!. Plus there are two completely different cuts. The European cut with orchestrated music by Jerry Goldsmith and the US version with a seriously different feel to it with music by pioneering German synth band Tangerine Dream. Producers thought Goldsmith wasn't hip enough for the US market and wanted music that younger audiences would connect with more. The JG version was only released in Europe and US audiences had to wait until 2002 to even see it. There was a special DVD set released awhile back that has both versions.

Kristin

I love the first movie, but did not enjoy the others. Best to read the whole book, there's so much good stuff in there. The name he calls out is Moon Child. I love how this story references us the watchers (or readers), it's such a cool way to bring us into the story. With us, the story doesn't exist. Can I now suggest the Last Unicorn? People never watched it because it's an animation and thought it was really childish because it's about a Unicorn, but the message is so much deeper. Even my 50+ enjoyed it when we watched it recently. And the Dark Crystal. That's just a must, and the story is deep and rich and thoughtful. It's not a kids movie, though I loved it as a child anyway.

Harvey Lee

Yes this was fairly dark as a kid's film when I re- watch it now This surprises people who don't realize it was a West German Production , in fact it was the most expensive film in German film history up to that point They cast Americans in the lead parts to help market it . I believe everyone who grew up with this undoubtedly remembers the scene with Artax the Horse 😥 Yes but it all comes together so wonderfully at the end . Such an engaging fantasy film. And to enjoy this today with a brilliant Sun out Yes Cheers Jen and I hope you've recovered from that scene 🙏♥️

Geoff S.

I read the author initially worked with the director and producer on the script but it was later changed and Michael Ende, the author of the book, sued them and lost because it was so different to what his story was. The movie only portrays half the book it seems. Movie was a big hit in Germany where it was filmed too. BTW Clippy is cool!

Joel

Yes!! Dark Crystal +1

Joe Blankenship

The metaphor for depression hits pretty hard as an adult. He sank because he stopped caring.

Thomas Malley

Remember this is only half the story. The second half, which is the point of the book, is left out of the movie. (Where Bastian rebuilds fantasia and .... )

Rob Nichols

Since you asked for 80's fantasies, I'll suggest Krull again.

Kevin Sommerfield

Please try Time Bandits, directed by Terry Gilliam (who directed 12 Monkeys and Brazil). A fantasy starring a kid but not totally a kid's movie. You should see it though, if only for an unexpected guest star!

Marqushio

Seeing this as a kid in the 80's shaped so many around my generation for facing hardship, and keeping hope and dreams alive. Still get's the heart to see it again. Artax of course but then also, I was 7 and was mesmerized by Tami Stronach (The Empress). Seeing her crying and Bastian just holding back in confusion made me want to scream at him! ah childhood... P.S. Labyrinth YES PLEASE

The Irish Buddhist

I was about 8 when this came out.. it definitely grabbed you with many different emotions as a child. I know I didn't fully understand it's intent until I saw it again in my teens, making it even more enjoyable but also sad and dark. Still love it today, but personally don't recommend the sequels. However, I do recommend the original 'The Dark Crystal'. Puppeteering was well done and the story is both unique and a bit dark.

Erik Lundmark

If you've read the book you know why he was upset, I don't blame him... But I see it as 2 different things, and love them both

TheNeonRabbit

The trippy clouds in this, Ghostbusters, The Ten Commandments, Close Encounters and a few dozen other movies were made using a "Cloud Tank". You get a big aquarium and fill it half way with fresh water, then slowly fill it the rest of the way with salt water. The two layers look the same but don't mix very well. You then take a turkey baster and slowly inject an opaque liquid like milk right between the two layers. It will slowly billow across the tank. If you film it from below and use different colored lights it looks like ominous clouds spreading across the sky. Very fun effect.

Romero Cetera Rivers

This is convenient and a nice discovery, Jen! Since when did we start, "No Sync?"

Slate

The Beastmaster is a classic 80's fantasy film you should definitely check out, Jen. Similar to Conan in feel and setting, so if you liked those, you'll enjoy this one too.

Thomas Malley

Oh to the ones who can't hear what Bastian yells out the window: Moonchild.

Thomas Malley

omg, and yes PLEASE read the actual book. The movie is basically just the setup for the actual story. And it's the best children's fantasy book ever written in my opinion. Very very underrated. Also check out his other book Momo.

Curran Dobbs

Today is actually the birthday of the guy who voiced Falcor the Dragon.

Thomas Malley

Sorry one more thing about the book. I think it should be required reading in school.

SirJohnCard

Artax in the Swamp of Sadness stays with you. Forever.

Romero Cetera Rivers

Life's been busy here! I'm just coming back again!!! 🤷‍♂️

Major Peril

Fantastic ’80s fantasy film. I was already a young adult when this came out so didn’t benefit from seeing it as a child, but have enjoyed viewing it many times since. Great reaction as always. Glad to see you getting into these older gems. Some great ’80s fantasy films have already been mentioned here. So, I’ll just add a few of my favorites that you haven't seen and thumbs up to all the others. 👍 - Dragonslayer (1981) - Ladyhawke (1985) - The Dark Crystal (1982) - Willow (1988) - Labyrinth (1986) - Legend (1985) - Krull (1983) - Time Bandits (1981) and maybe even… - Masters of the Universe (1982) 😆

Matt

Haven't watched this in so long it will feel pretty fresh so I'm looking forward to seeing it with your reaction, thanks Jen 😊

Kane

One of the great joys of the early internet for me was finding this script and learning that Bastian yells "Moonchild" after watching it 500x on VHS as a child and having not a single damned clue what he's shouting into the wind and thunder.

Summer

Ever After is great

Charles

When I was in the scouts as a kid, we'd go to this camp in the woods once a year. There'd always be a movie night, and the camp had only two movies. The NeverEnding Story and The Sandlot. So we'd watch The NeverEnding Story every two years. It was magical.

bryon wilcock

Dark Crystal and lambreth are both worth checking out I think you'll have them both and I'm sure somebody has mentioned this already but the theme song you recognize was featured on Stranger Things Not sure if you seen that show or not but that's probably where you've heard it....✌️

Sykonee

Bart as '80s kid: "This movie was the most traumatizing thing I've ever watched." Homer as The '80s: "This movie was the most traumatizing thing you've ever watched so far..."

Evan

No need to watch the sequels, Jen. I mean, if you must, than 2 but 3 is a complete waste of your life. I didn't even know about it until many years after its release.

Evan

Alan Oppenheimer, who also voiced OG Skeletor and others too numerous to count.

Marcus Hicks

Yes, Artrax is a part of the "80s childhood trauma" pack.

Marcus Hicks

Dark Crystal too, for me at any rate.

ED209

Is Artax the greatest Red Shirt of all time? He is in little more than 5 min of the film and dies at the very first major obstacle to set up the peril that Atreyu will face on his quest. But unlike most minor ally that dies early , nobody forgets Artax. I was emotionally destroyed when I first saw the film on tv and it's pretty clear that I wasn't alone in that. Every adult reactors seeing the film for the first time are distraught by his death too. Everybody is elated to see him back with Atreyu at the end also. Definitely helps that he's a horse and not a person. He also doesn't speak like in the book so he seems even more innocent.

SuicuneSol

My comment is about a month late, but Michael Ende the author of The Neverending Story publicly denounced this movie as it misrepresented his vision. ^^; And he would never allow another film adaptation of the book again. It's a great movie and a childhood favorite, but the biggest difference is that the movie only covers half the novel. The second-half of the book explores what happens to Bastian after he makes his wishes and shapes Fantasia into a new world. It explores themes of absolute power, corruption, and toxic escapism. In many ways, it's a complete reversal of the movie's theme to "follow your dreams" but is worth reading to get the full story. The sequel movies kinda adapt the 2nd part of the book... but they're direct-to-VHS crap lol. But you do get to see Jack Black in one of his first film roles.

Robert Durant

Also about to turn 46 and I still cant rewatch this movie without skipping the scene of Artax sinking. Saw it too many times as a kid and teenager and it is just one of those moments that just sticks with you.

Robert Rivers

The No copy needed version isn’t working.
