Dylan

Two more great DS9 reactions from Jen. Can’t ask for anything better on a Saturday 🔥🖖

Ian

Wow a thumbprint without Jen are we in the mirror universe 😯 trek Saturday with lady Jen that's frigging awesome

Jen Murray

Ya when I don't post the vid directly to Patreon and use a picture instead it blurs it (for non-members) so I think a more recognizable logo is helpful. It's hard to tell for example what my NeverEnding Story thumbnail is. I wish they didn't blur pics

Jen Murray

I am experimenting with using links above instead of posting video directly on Patreon. Please let me know if any issues using the links

jon bolton

I'm sure you now realise why i said on Wednesday i was looking forward to your reaction to For the Cause.

Christian Becker

Yeah, right on time for a relaxing Saturday evening! Live long and prosper 🖖 ... and for what it’s worth, I’ve really come to like your channel.

Jonathan Keating

Streamable version is giving me an “An error occurred” when I try and play it both on home wifi and cellular. Just me? //EDIT Must be a streamable issue, plays fine on desktop, doesn't work on iPad

Joe H

This is unrelated, but I recently remembered at the end of your TOS Day of the Dove reaction last September you mentioned you were going to watch another secret TOS episode and that it would be released at an undisclosed time later. Did that ever happen or has it been addressed since then? I don't always check the comments on episodes, so I don't know if it's been mentioned. Looking forward to these two reactions today!

Summer

You have good instincts Jen. I always forget the Luaxana story is in Muse, I think of that part as a late season 5 so I must be forgetting something

The_Truth

Gul Dukat's daughter Ziyal was actually played by 3 different actresses, this is the 2nd Ziyal actor, she only played Ziyal in this episode

Gary Cameron

So far, no problem on my laptop.

Bammer

Jeyal was played by the same actor who played Kang in season 2 episode 19 "Blood Oath."

Jen Murray

If u have an iPhone/Apple device streamable may not work on it

PapaXan

I would have paide good money if after Odo proclaims his love and asked if anyone could challenge him, that Picard came in and said - "I do" and then it fades to black and the episode ends.

Curran Dobbs

In Lwaxana's first episode, Odo ends up regenerating in her lap. In The Muse, she ends up taking a nap in his.

Curran Dobbs

The Muse is the episode where Odo becomes Deanna Troi's step-father for a few months...

Curran Dobbs

Would have said she ended up regenerating in his but I realized how that sounded.

Laura Thornley

The double feature - one of my most disliked episodes and one of my favourites.

Summer

The rest of the season has big ones, not all faves but big ones. Did you suspect Eddington? Two more weeks of season 4!

Astria Starwynd

Can confirm. Streamable won't play nice with an iPhone no matter the browser.

Vina

You remembered right, Anslem was the name of Jake's book from the earlier episode with older Jake!

jon bolton

I'm part of the minority who tend to love Lwaxana episodes, but not this one. With the exception of the Kestra episode i generally prefer her being wacky, also i'm not a big fan of the Jake story, though i love Meg Foster who played the energy vampire

SirJohnCard

Yeah, not a fan of The Muse. Seemed like two story ideas mashed together because the producers just needed a filler episode. And totally wasted a guest star like Michael Ansara.

jon bolton

Working fine on my tablet.

Curran Dobbs

Her grooming Jake wasn't literally sexual but did come across as an allegory or metaphor for sexual grooming but that's just my interpretation.

Joel

I still want some kind of acknowledgement of this novel somewhere else in the ST universe :)

Opti_Frog

For the Cause is good. The Muse is sort of meh. It really does feel like two b-plots just awkwardly sharing an episode. The Lwaxana/Odo storyline is a bit interesting, at least. Next week has one of my favourite one-off characters in all of Star Trek!

Henchman Twenty1

There had been some speculation among fans that Eddington might be more than he seemed as he seemed too normal and was just added to the recuring cast at the start of season 3. The leading theory was that he was a Changeling, so the show then threw us a curveball.

Sykonee

Damn you, Eddington! And we were finally accepting you as part of the crew after your shenanigans in 'The Die Is Cast'! I used to think 'The Muse' was the lone dud of S4, but watching it now, it's honestly not that bad. Majel gets to do another heart-warming turn (in a story she wrote, apparently), and the Jake plot... Well, let's face it: what young aspiring writer wouldn't want to be seduced by a reiki succubus to create a masterwork in one shot? (for whatever reason, I get a giggle out of seeing Sisko leaping into the frame to save his son from Meg Foster. Super Space Dad to the rescue!)

Trish

I Romana Troy relationship with odo is the best

Trish

But 30 years ago I knew nothi.g grooming

Desmond

Yeah, The Muse is somewhat better than I remembered. Some decent character moments with Odo, and Lwaxana probably at her least annoying. Still perhaps the weakest episode of s4.

Bobby Coolbreeze

I can’t seem to see the full watch along now and watching the sync your copy here takes me off Patreon to YouTube. It didn’t do that before? I like and prefer it the way you had it without the links. The original way was more streamlined. I’d rather watch direct on Patreon.

Bobby Coolbreeze

Anslem is the name of the novel in the episode “Visitor” and there is a hint of the musical cue from that episode too when they reveal the title of his novel and he signs his name.

Bobby Coolbreeze

Lwaxanna Troi is a much better character on DS9 than she was on TNG She was too goofy and annoying on TNG. On DS9 I can take her more seriously and she and Odo play well off each other. She is more genuine here. She references her daughter she lost, Kestra. That was her best TNG episode. She is better at drama than comedy. Also the episode TNG she was good in Half a Life.

Ian Fleming

The Muse. Season 4 is overflowing with fantastic episodes... This was not one of them. Luckily, For The Cause more than makes up for it.

Jeremy Nuss

In The Muse, the main storyline is Jake’s. It’s only clear from the title. I thought it was odd how the alien had him rest, only to try and push him to write to death later. Seems illogical 🖖

Dean

I love Odo and Lwaxana's relationship especially how it developed from Season 1 where she was the over the top Lwaxana of TNG then by DS9 Season 4 she and Odo love each other in a well-balanced caring friendship way that has love but not in a romantic way. That little scene of them playing ShapeShifter Hide-&-Seek is just delightful! Odo actually having fun and trying to make Lwaxana happy is so heartwarming especially when we think to how Lwaxana has made that effort with Alexander (and even Picard, in a very obnoxious way) on TNG. I like that DS9 stands on its own, but there are times (especially with ostensibly "filler" episodes) that I would have really enjoyed some more TNG folks popping by for a little fun considering how the DS9 writers definitely seemed to really balance character development and some light heartedness. The two in particular that I think didn't get much development on TNG that could have benefitted with a pop-in are Troi and Geordi especially in that post-Generations/pre-First Contact gap.

Slate

Kenneth Marshall (Eddington) also starred in a classic 80's fantasy film, Krull, which I highly recommend you watch (I voted on it on the suggestion page). I think it's still his only leading role, and he looks quite different there than he does in DS9. For the longest time I didn't even realize it was the same actor.

Banes

Your daughter...is in the Chunnel

Banes

For the Cause is an awesome episode - it seems like the kind of story that existed in a classic movie, an old Western or something...the Sheriff's girlfriend is a suspected criminal or traitor. As far as I know it isn't. Excellent story anyway.

Banes

The Muse - ahhh, no. Not good. And it's not Lwaxana's fault; she's the best thing about the episode.

Sykonee

Oh, I'm sure there's a valid case for that, which just goes to show how strong S4's been. Held among the same rankings as, say, 'Move Along Home', 'Meridian', or some other future unmentionables though? No way!

Julian San

That’s funny, literally earlier today I watched a random video about Meg Foster and her distractingly piercing eyes and here she is, the titular guest star.

Desmond

Yeah, seems the Cardassian makeup doesn't agree with many actors...

jon bolton

Yeah tier ranking Season 3 i give all episodes between S and B, in general i love Season 4 more, but The Muse is borderline between C and D. I guess i'll wait a few months to watch it again with Josh and Alex then decide which it best suits. For the Cause obviously gets S tier from me, largely thanks to Michael Eddington.

Lee

And that's how we'd know "Picard" was a changeling! The real Picard would never keep Lwaxana from marrying someone else.

jon bolton

Just a pity we never get to see Deanna's reaction to that when her mother mentions it to her.

John DiGiantomasso

So as for Lwaxana's husband (played by Michael Ansara) - you can put him in a silly suit, remove his hair, and cover him with prosthetics but close your eyes and that voice is absolutely 100% KANG! Why did he give up his most prized possession to Odo? As someone once said, "Only a fool fights in a burning house!" As for the "mysterious glowing spaceball of light" where did she/it keep the pen and paper? In her glowing spacepocket?? In the case of "For the Cause" DS9 pulled yet another classic switcheroo of just when you think you know a character everything changes. This episode, and several of rest of Season 4 just continue to pack the plot bucket with more and more open ends to resolve in S5 and beyond! Fasten your space seatbelts!

Lee

It doesn't matter how many of my fellow DS9 watchers dislike "The Muse." I like it enough for all of us. It's an important episode for Odo's character development and a rare opportunity for Jake to take center stage. Of the artists inspired by Onaya that were mentioned, we'd heard of one of them way back in TOS "Where No Man Has Gone Before," in which Gary Mitchell quoted Tarbolde's sonnet "Nightingale Woman": My love has wings Slender feathered things With grace of upswept curve And tapered tip The "ball of energy" effect was reminiscent of the emotional vampire from TOS "Day of the Dove" that fled the ship when Kirk led the Klingons in a rousing round of raucous laughter. One of those Klingons was Kang, whose actor Michael Ansara also appeared in "The Muse."

Lee

The emotional vampire in "Day of the Dove" could create swords out of other objects, so there's no reason to think Onaya couldn't do the same to make pen and paper. I imagine balls of energy have to do something to stave off the boredom of looking for prey to feed from.

William Rosmer

Eddington's take on The Federation is true, from a certain point of view. Garak and Quark even said something a bit similar during the root beer conversation. "If you drink enough of it you begin to like it." "It's insidious." "Just like The Federation."

Lady Beyond The Wall

I didn't know it was the same actor until maaaybe last year? I absolutely adored Krull when I was a kid. I'm pretty sure my brother and I warped the VHS from watching it so much. Kenneth Marshall, in Krull, was also like.. one of my very first crushes (besides Disney's Robin Hood, but he was a fox, so.. don't think it really counts! 😂) But he looks SO different in DS9 that when I look at him, I always just think (no offense to Marshall) "I had a crush on this guy?"

Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson

A lot of people dislike "The Muse" but I'm a big fan of Meg Foster, so I can't dislike it 😄

Harmony Wisdom

The creativity-sucking vampire is disturbing. I think L'waxana is powerful enough to have sensed her presence on the station. But her pregnancy and husband distress might have thrown off her senses. Instead of Notorious B.I.G. , we have to suffer with Nefarious B.O.L. :-P

Andrew Roach

I don't see any other comment here relating to this but watching the Watch Along version there is a small distortion, and I noticed it one time before as well. It is not major and hard to describe but the effect happens on motion at which point little lines occur. This is before your time but the effect is like I used to see in the VHS days.

Carl Murphy

The streamable watch along link with no copy needed doesn’t seem to be working for this reaction fyi! Not sure if it’s just me.

Jen Murray

If you're using an Apple device it may not work. Should be working on other devices

Jen Murray

Can you give a timestamp so I can see what you mean?

Andrew Roach

It is basically nonstop across the entire video. Do you have a general email I could send you an image snap and even better a short screen video record?

Tom Evans

Not assuming anything about this person, but please don't share any personal email addresses with anyone. I've been watching every DS9 Watch Along video and I haven't seen any issues at all.

Andrew Roach

Fair enough. Sadly I thought it was something weird at my end as others would have said something otherwise. I am glad it is rare, the latest DS9 posting is fine.
