I saw the word Voyage in my notifications and thought this was your first Voyager reaction for a second 😂

Wondering what to watch and beepity-beep! Now I know 😄 Thanks Jen. Love watching these classic fantasy movies with you.

This is a "Sword & Sorcery" movie. " Sword & Sandal " refers to a movies like Gladiator, Spartacus, etc. I suppose "Sword & Sorcery" could be a subset of the "Sword & Sandal" subgenre, though.

They really are fun aren't they and the more fun Jen has the more fun we have 🙂 great to see so any movies along these lines on her request site www.jenmurrayxo.com hopefully they get plenty of upvotes 👍

Are the special effects as good as modern CGI? No, but that's charm - plus, it took more skill and talent to do the practical effects, IMO.

Sinbad's pirate crew are a bit like "red-shirts", but with turbans - they die in so many interesting ways!

IMHO another Harryhausen classic is the ‘Beast from 20,000 Fathoms.' It is not sword and sorcery, but a contemporary story of a 'beast' attacking New York City partly inspired by a Ray Bradbury short story. It's in B&W and from 1953, so it's predates more famous monsters. Also has a bit part by Lee Van Cleef!

Educating Jen: 'Full fathom 5' is a measure of how deep the water is below the ship. It's measured by using a weighted rope marked in fathoms (6 feet). This weight is dropped into the water until it hits the ocean floor. The shorthand phrase for two fathoms for river boats is 'Mark Twain!' (A delightful movie is ‘Educating Rita’ in which a college professor tutors a hairdresser.’)

Max du Coudray

The origin of Sinbad is the Tales of the Arabian Nights. He is one of the characters featured in Shahrazad's stories, like Aladdin and Ali Baba.
