What the frig! I had NO idea Krull would go so hard!! SUCH an epic score by James Horner and the perfect music for epic adventure to rescue a princess!! Loved the fantasy lore in this one - the disappearing Fortress, the cyclops who sees the future, the Glaive!! This one was SO much fun! Are there more movies out there like this to check out?

2026-09-06 01:00 Dragon Slayer is right up your alley if you liked this! I also thought the score sounded a lot like Star Trek The Motion Picture in some parts but that wasn’t Horner it. It was Jerry Goldsmith.

Earlier than I expected, glad you enjoyed it. Krull was a flop when released, and even now is not well regarded. But those of us who like it really like it. I saw it in the theater and thought it was awesome. That opening score was some of the most epic shit I've ever heard! The hero Colwin is played by Kenneth Marshal, otherwise known as EDDINGTON! And there was also young Liam Neeson and a youg Robbie Coltrane. And a not so young Freddie Jones. Visual effects were done by Derek Meddings who did a lot of the Bond effects. Krull and the Zone, lots to watch tonight, thanks a bunch Jen.

2026-09-29 20:00 This is a deep dive into some 80s sci-fi/fantasy and I’m here for it. Now we just need Jen to check out Beastmaster! 🔥

Rob Nichols

I'll second that! And add The Dark Crystal.

MarkGauci85

This movie to some people nowdays, might seem low budget, derivative and lackluster compared to other fantasy offerings of it's day, but look past all that and you'll find a fun and engaging cult classic. This movie was always a fun time to pair up with movies like the Neverending Story or Legend or The Dark Crystal.

1983, certifiably the best year ever. The perfect fulcrum of history

Tom W.

The Princesses lines were all redone by a different actress. I never realized until I was an adult.

Geoff S.

Another great overlooked sci fi film is The Black Hole from 1979 or 1980. It was Disney’s first delve into that genre and I loved it as a kid. Great John Barry score and a some really creepy stuff for a kids movie.

Well-Sewn

I’m less than 5 minutes in, hearing Jen say “this is making me want to play the trumpet” and I’m shouting “No! No, it doesn’t! Speaking as a trumpet player, this score makes us check into psych wards!!” 🤣 (Jen, if you see this and didn’t see my note on the weekly announcement about the complexity of the score and recording it, check it out!)

The lead is played by Ken Marshall, the dude who plays the Maquis Michael Eddington in Star Trek Deep Space Nine. He looks quite a bit different younger and with way more hair but I can recognize the voice in parts.

Curran Dobbs

Jen (on screen): There better not be any Atreyu and the horse situation. My brain: Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra. (I mean, I understood the reference but it still made me think of Darmok.)

Vlad D

Comander Eddington is very young here

Well-Sewn

It’s funny, Ken Marshall is giving a talk at the Star Trek convention this weekend about progressing from his role in Krull to being Eddington in DS9!

Henchman Twenty1

Too bad they didn't give Eddington that cool glaive-like weapon, traitor or not.

Matt

The Green Knight 2021 is an awesome modern fantasy adventure I'd recommend

deskmerc

Oh YEAH Dragonslayer, entirely underrated flick. and the dragon itself, has the BEST NAME EVER: Vermithrax Perjorative

deskmerc

Krull came out during a period when everyone was trying to release a sword and sorcery flick. SOme of those films went on to become foundations of cable Tv, which was gaining traction at the time. An incomplete list of films in this era: Conan the Barbarian Excalibur Dragonslayer Beastmaster Conan was a surprise hit, and galvanized many others to cash in. BUt Krull was concieved also in an era where DUngeons and Dragons was gaining serious popularity, and Dragonslayer, Excalibur, and Clash of the Titans demonstrated that major studios could make a profit from it. Alas, when it was released, folks were already tired of the genre at the theater, but ate it up on cable.

Ian

Havnt seen this in forever and remember nothing but with a thumbnail like that I know this is going to be a fun ride 🙂

Mastervodo

Vermin. Anthrax. Insult. What a great dragon name!

Mastervodo

Yes! Beastmaster! Kodo and Podo! And the puke bat men!

Mastervodo

Krull is such an overlooked great fantasy adventure film! And +1 to all the people saying Dragonslayer should be next! Features a cameo by Emperor Palpatine! Also +1 to Beastmaster (You will love it!) and since you already did Conan, do Conan the Destroyer! Epic Sword and Sorcery! Swash Swash, Buckle Buckle!

Mastervodo

Oh yeah - and the score makes me think of Fire and Ice, another animated sword and sorcery gem! Frank Frazetta!

Jason Scade

1993 was pretty awesome!

Elliot

Omg u watched Krull. I begged for this ages ago and was told it lost in a poll. Cant wait to see your reaction. This is a childhood fav.

Elliot

The dragons in dragonslayer hold up even today. Was amazing cgi at the time.

Mastervodo

With the air quality and brush fires around where I am, watching this I am wondering 2 things. First - if the fire mares are so damn fast, how did these guys find them, catch up to them, and catch them? Couldn't they have just been like, "Can't catch me! I'm outta here" and zipped off at 125 MPH? (1000 leagues = 3000 miles/24 hours) And #2 - are they just leaving a burning trail of destruction behind them? Seems like these horsies are a natural disaster!

Mastervodo

Beast did NOT know who he was F'N with! Fire mutants! Like Fire Mutant Wonder Twins!

john reed

Quick fact . the lead character in krull is Michael Eddington from DS9

K Dub

Great reaction "Jen The Magnificent"!!!🫵👌🤣🫡 I'll add my vote to a "DragonSlayer" reaction.🙏 Disney's first "dark" movie.👌

Harvey Lee

Yeesss. Here earlier than I expected which is even better , An underatted Fantasy epic from the 80's which was full of many awesome flicks like this Beast Master Dragonslayer And The Sword and the Sorceror are worth a watch I know you'll really enjoy the effects plus the rousing score Jen .

Over50Gamer

James Horner really did cook with this one! One year after Star Trek II; you can definitely hear some compositional carryover from that movie.

Rob Nichols

Go-motion puppets, not CGI.

rubberkidney

1993 was pretty awesome, for sure, no doubt. Just a little bit stale, kind of retreading awesome ground. No hate

Eddie Munzter

If you loved the music in this the Dark Crystal's soundtrack will blow your mind! It's so good!

seven tessipates

for more swords and sorcery and sci-fi, the 1987 Masters of the Universe fits the bill, and the new 2026 MotU film is a lot of fun, if you liked Thor: Ragnarok you'd like it. might make a fun compare/contrast

Joanthan Skidmore

In 'Ready Player One,' the character Sho uses the Glaive!

Rod I

If you want to go on a deeper dive with the director Peter Yates, there is another one that came out between The Deep and Krull called Breaking Away. You will love this movie. It is truly a feel good movie that I love so much.

Darryl Low

"SUCK IT, BEAST!" haha 😂 Damn, this was a lot of fun to re-visit with you Jen. These types of 80s movies really do hit the nostalgia button for me as well, as it was around that time when they all came out on VHS and we would rent them over and over, and we would see all the straight to video sci-fi and fantasy films. The good old days 😊 James Horner's score is so epic and the orchestrations are wild. If you liked his music for this, you'll definitely love Willow as well. Thanks for another really awesome reaction today Jen 😊

Calvin Thorpe

A cool 80s movie that I always thought was cool and a bit different with a cool 80s soundtrack is a movie called The Wraith

HeWhoLooksSkyward

Freddie Jones and Francesca Annis (Widow of the Web) would star together the next year in David Lynch's "Dune" (1984).

Jessie Caldwell

I recommend Ladyhawke if you haven't watched that. 1985, starring Matthew Broderick, Rutger Hauer, and Michelle Pfeiffer. Directed by Richard Donner (Superman director)

Marcus Hicks

Dark Crystal *before* Dragonslayer IMHO.

Marcus Hicks

The magic using guy that crashed into the water is played by the same actor who played Charlie Bucket's teacher in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Marcus Hicks

We all know that the only instruments worth learning are Oboe or French Horn 😛.

Jeremy Nuss

I think a few weeks of Wes Anderson movies would rock.
