FYI - the titles in the post are last weeks episodes šŸ™‚

Ian

Saturday trek with lady Jen that's ferengin awesome engage šŸ––šŸ”„

Henchman Twenty1

The guy that Quark has sit in Morn's chair was the actor who plays Morn, Mark Allen Shephard. We saw Morn get that Matador painting at Quark's auction in the episode ā€œIn The Cardsā€ where Jake was trying to get the baseball card for his dad. Nice little continuity detail.

TC Green

Waltz is so good. A top 5 DS9 episode for me.

Senzu Bean

Dukat finally shows his true face. He went from Lawful Evil to Neutral Evil and now his final form, Chaotic Evil. He remains a very interesting foe though, mainly due to his role and how well he acts. His quest for validation is a bottomless pit. MORN. He finally gets his own episode. It's a fun episode with some back story that we all were curious about. Next week we have 'Far Beyond the Stars' and a lot of people are looking forward to this one. It's good.

Chuck A. (Tngfanatic)

The bajorian who sits in Morn's stool is Mark Alan Shepard who plays Morn. I was at a Star Trek Convention in L.A. in 1998. In the audience sitting next to me was Mark Alan Shepard. They had just filmed this episode, Who Mourns for Morn. Mark told me that I should look for him sitting on Morn's stool, he was not in Morn's makeup.

Joel

And now you truly learn who Dukat is

If you like serialized content DS9 does in spurts, definitely consider Battlestar Galactica. It maintains a specific story timeline, though every series does have it's share of so-called filler episodes. BSG is a good hard-hitting sci-fi series, though I consider it more of a military drama, with some moral and spiritual undertones. I have voted for it, but I also would like you to continue with the Star Trek series. Either way, the decision is ultimately yours.

Henchman Twenty1

I'd love to see her start with the ORIGINAL BSG series as that's the one that I am a fan of. I was around way back when it aired. And it's only one season, so it shouldn't take too long to get through. Then she can move on to that soap opera reboot.

William Rosmer

the game dax and quark are playing is tongo. they've played it before, it appears to be some kind of combo of poker and roulette with maybe a dash of monopoly.

Kristin

I would love her to react to BSG. I wouldclike her to watch it along side Voyager, two sci-fi shows at once. Either BSG or Stargate SG-1.

Fanchman

I like the original BSG as well, but I definitely prefer the remake.

Senzu Bean

That's cool info, I didn't know this.

Julian San

Seeing Jen’s thoughts on Dukat for 5 seasons, I was just waiting for her to finally watch this episode and it didn’t disappoint!

Justin T

Two points that immediately came to my mind on seeing this episode thanks for sharing and making sure everyone knew them.

Nate Gavin

Always did have a soft spot for this episode with Morn - a sleeper hit in my eyes! Totally agree with Jen's analysis - the occasional fun side quest from the serious foreboding of this universe, where the NPC and his background gets fleshed out.

Summer

Great reaction

Geoff S.

One of the episodes next week is a really fun one! The actor that Quark sat in Morn's chair is the actual actor that plays Morn!

Vina

FYI the "worthless gold" and value of latinum is that - at least according to fan theories and non-canon sources - while gold can be replicated (making any scarcity moot) latinum cannot be replicated

Banes

I like the standalone episodes - agree that I wouldn't want every episode to be like 'MORN, but if the whole show was about the war I wouldn't like it either. That we can get two episodes in a row like Waltz and Who Mourns for Morn and they both fit right in to what DS9 is - that's amazing.

Joel

I remember Ira Behr saying something about Tongo's creation, there aren't really any rules, they just wanted something distinctive that would be "The Ferengi Game"

Curran Dobbs

Jen: Is this his redemption episode? Narrator: It would not be his redemption episode...

Slate

Babylon 5 is also another series with a very serialized, continuous story - one of the first of its kind, actually. Definitely watch it, it's on an entirely other level of storytelling, characters, and more.

JustOneMoreQuestion

Waltz is a good episode but the one thing I've always taken a slight issue with was Doctor Bashir being the one who is so willing to go after Sisko at the possible expense of many other lives. If anything he is the one who would put his personal feelings aside and regardless of the fact it was Sisko say they can't do that.

onticfrostbite

Psychopaths can be very charming. Ted Bundy, Charles Manson, Hitler...

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Dukat really is the classic charismatic abuser/dictator. "I wouldn't have to hurt you if you didn't fight back/burn the pot roast" whatever. As a complex villain he really is written very well

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Funny how the loan shark aliens look kinda shark-likešŸ˜†. Buffy the Vampire Slayer did the same gag, I know the timelines don't match up but in my head Armin brought the joke over with himšŸ˜†

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

Kinda odd that we get another crime/heist-y episode so soon after The Magnificent Ferengi. I really do think I prefer this one though. One really serious episode and one silly one this week I had a great time with both.

Preaching to the Horse's Mouth

The shot from inside the storage container as Quark leans in and then backs into the standoff, I really like how the direction and the comedic bit work together.

Curran Dobbs

Gold is worthless in Trek because it can be replicated. Latinum can't be replicated.

Geoff S.

Found this used today in a store for $8. Great drawings and charts of all the Star Trek worlds and where they are in relation to each other. It’s book you can lose days in.

Laura Thornley

Also gold is relatively abundant in space. So even if it couldn't be replicated its not worth it. I also suspect Latinum 'can' be replicated, but its a complex element/compound and thus would require so much energy as to be pointless. Energy is a valuable resources even in Star Trek!

Sean Jackson

Many people back in the day believed that Waltz was character assassination. That they made Dukat stupid evil because Ira Stephen Behr couldn't stand how much people liked him. Whether you feel that way Jen I'll leave that to you.

Alexis Vorian

2 of the best Star Trek episodes coming soon....

Jeremy Nuss

Dukat is one of the best villains of all time. Yes, I like the side quest episodes too. And totally wish we still got 26 episode seasons. Storytelling has gotten so much worse in the past 10-15 years, imo.

Chaos T

He's a top Star Trek antagonist for me. There have been great antagonists in Star Trek but we only get a handful of episodes with many of them. It was a good storytelling/writing choice to have him be a regular villain on this show which allowed for in-depth, nuanced writing to slowly build through the seasons.

Chaos T

The acting and interaction between Avery Brooks and Marc Alaimo in "Watlz" was incredible. One of the better episodes of the series. Also, I really enjoyed the underlying criticism of "I was just following orders" which since the Nuremberg Trials post WWII hasn't been a legal point of defense for soldiers and military officers when committing atrocities. Unfortunately, we're seeing that issue raise its ugly head on numerous fronts in these times.

Brent Justice

Gold isn't valuable because it can be replicated; Latinum cannot be replicated; hence, it has value. Latinum is a liquid and is encased in Gold as the casing.

Chaos T

Is Morn part of the crew? It seems like he is. Him being someone for moral support on everyone's time off is a huge uplifting thing for soldiers at war.

Laura Thornley

I'd consider him an auxiliary member. His shipping business probably supplies the station.

Rob Thompson

Same. I always thought Dukat was a smarmy p.o.s even from the early seasons. A great foe perfectly acted by Alaimo no doubt but as a character i found very little redeeming about him.

HeatheŠÆ

Oh wow, I didn't realize how close we were ♄

HeatheŠÆ

I have hard time seeing that. Because of What We Left Behind and how perfectly they were writing a full blown narcissist from the beginning. Mark Alaimo is delicious to watch. I mean he is just soooo good. And you can tell the writers had a great time writing for him. All the facts of Dukat's actions in this ep have been laid out from the start and this was a great way to raise the stakes. But Dukat is very charming. It's what makes people like that so dangerous.

HeatheŠÆ

I haven't watched the second ep yet. But regarding Waltz, I mean how great are these two great actors hitting it out of the park with these Shakespearean monologues? Of course this is a Dukat centered episode and Mark Alaimo has a lot more material but the back and forth is terrific and Alaimo blows me away every time with his deliveries.

Andrew Roach

I believe I made this comment a while ago but Jen’s comments about serialized vs episodic episodes made me think of this comment again. A while ago I listed to two audio books: Star Trek The First 25 Years and Star Trek The Next 25 Years which were both unique because they told the entire story of Trek as direct quotes by all the people involved. Anyway, back during the time of DS9 the studios were completely against serialized TV. As there was no streaming back then the only way to watch shows was on regular TV and the studios felt casual watchers would be lost with large continuing story lines. The DS9 producers and show runners had to constantly fight the studio to get as much serialized content as they could until eventually the studio gave up. It was at this time that a revolutionary show premiered... Babylon 5. It was the first show that for it’s entire 5 year run was laid out in advance to be one big story arc, yes it still had stand alone episodes as well. When I first watched this show it replaced Trek as my favorite show. Hopefully you can watch this series someday, it is far better than Voyager imo. Don’t take me wrong, Voyager is fine and has truly great episodes but it is no DS9, or B5, or BSG.

Marcus Hicks

I love "Who mourns for Morn". It is a wonderful palette cleanser after "Waltz"....plus its an hilarious comedic episode with a wonderful ensemble cast. One of the brothers was giving off strong Willem Defoe energy.

SteelPookie

Dukat is hands down the best villian in all of ST. A complete fully flushed out character built and reveled over time. Just simply the best. But since DS9 has the best characters period, this comes as no surprise.
