William Rosmer

far beyond the stars is obviously amazing, but i think one of my favorite bits in the entire show is odo and quark teaming up to troll o'brien and bashir in the end of one little ship

Curran Dobbs

Great. Even in Star Trek, size matters.

Ian

Trek Saturday with lady J and description is perfect to make one click that play button instantly πŸ”₯πŸ™‚ engage πŸ––

TC Green

Hell yeah. Another absolute classic episode of DS9 followed up by one of my favorite light hearted episodes.

Terry In the UK

I have been looking forward to Far Beyond The Stars since Emissary, and the day is finally here.....not just peak DS9, but peak Trek across the whole franchise.

William Rosmer

don't feel bad jen it took me forever to recognize some of them too

jon bolton

I love both episodes, especially One Little Ship.

Summer

You recognized them well enough Jen.

William Rosmer

the ones you didn't mention were dukat and weyun as the cops that beat him, and martok as the artist at the magazine.

Geoff S.

I knew you would love the second episode a lot. Can’t wait to watch later! If you watch older American TV you'd recognize some of them without the makeup. Rene Auberjonois was in a sitcom called Benson for years so he's easily recognizable.

Julian San

Lmfao Jen has already established that she may have partial prosopagnosia (facial blindness). Far Beyond the Star was bound to be a struggle-fest recognizing faces 🀣

William Rosmer

wait that's a thing? that might answer so much stuff for me

Kev Longley

The face blindness is crazy ha

Bammer

You managed to recognize most of them. Here are the four you missed: The kid at the news stand was Nog. The man handing out the drawings to the writers was General Martok. The two cops who beat Benny were Gul Dukat and Weyoun.

Cody Cameron

For Far Beyond The Stars she did great she figured out the main cast for the most part before it was spelled out. I know a few of them the makeup characters outside before seeing this episode so that what helped me otherwise I would have struggled with her I just know it. So Great work imo. I mean we saw Nog for a few minutes and she got him

Joel

The next step along the Path of the Emissary

Summer

One little ship is great

The_Truth

"Far Beyond the Stars" wow....I got touched watching it then and I still feel it now, many people ask why was this episode created, well it was created because Avery wanted to show everyone how things have changed and hasn't changed from the 1950s, he wanted to create conversation, and show everyone how things were from a black man's point of view in the 1950s and who better to do that than Avery Brooks

Dean

I appreciate that Jen can FEEEEEL our frustration at her difficulty at recognizing the actors out of make up LOL

Real Raw News

One great episode, and one of the worst

Ian

That was a lot of fun ' one little ship ' might well be one of my favourites of the entire series to date πŸ”₯ Jen + shrinking = guaranteed fun time . Still more shrinking stuff on the request site to watch so head over there and upvoter all you like www.jenmurrayxo.com Regarding not recognising some of the actors in the other episode don't even worry about it Jen anyone who isn't happy about it well they need to get a hobby . Cheers for two fun reactions Jen πŸ”₯πŸ––

Senzu Bean

'Far beyond the stars' sells itself as peak Trek in general. And I think 'One little ship', while somewhat of a filler episode, shows that the quality and entertainment doesn't drop. I might be stepping on a few toes here, but imo TNG and Voyager was guilty of having too many lackluster filler episodes. With DS9 you never know what you're going to get, yet it usually comes as a positive surprise. A.k.a 'Good, I didn't waste my time'. But everyone is allowed to disagree. Anyway, two more great episodes next week and I am looking forward to the second one: 'Change of Heart' while 'honor among thieves' also moved me.

Real Raw News

Jen didn’t recognize Worf? Oh never mind she did!

Real Raw News

Far above the stars more relevant now than when it aired and the time period

Dean

I understand not recognizing Martok and taking time to recognize Worf, but I'm surprised Jen didn't recognize Dukat and Weyoun by the time they do a crosscut of them in costume when they attack him.

Dean

Dax being all business when the situation turns serious in Little Ship is such a cool character bit as Bashir is making little puns. She was having fun at the start of the science part of the mission, but knew to lock in when things changed as she is in the command role. DS9 handles that distinction perfectly while several other shows in the IP seem to struggle with it because e'rbody loves quipping.

Senzu Bean

Just above you 'real raw News' said "One great episode, and one of the worst". I really don't get why. There is no real bad acting, the visuals are good, a 'fantastic voyage' vibe within a pressure cooker atmosphere. It's not the best, but one of the worst? Perhaps he felt disappointed that Worf didn't manage to create the poem.

Opti_Frog

I don't blame you at all for not recognising some actors without prosthetics and makeup. But i yelled slightly at my screen when you didn't recognise Dukat and Weyoun, when they were shown WITH makeup. πŸ˜‹

TigerMyth

Yeah she thought Martok was Dukat. I was in the kitchen cooking while wearing a headset for sound and it was probably easier to pick people out that way.

Dean

she kiiiiiiinda got Nog, but was unsure for a bit.

Dean

Looking at what is coming up in sets of two eps in future weeks, there is a duo that Jen is going to LOVE (no spoilers).

Senzu Bean

Im actually dreading one specific episode. You know which one.

Desmond

I think you did well recognizing most of the actors in "Far Beyond the Stars", the only thing that kind of grated on me was that you seemed to spend more time trying to recognize everyone than paying attention to the episode itself, since it does deal with some pretty heavy material. πŸ˜‚ And yes, on Trek, racism is archaic and not an issue anymore. But not in the 50s, and not at the time it aired, either.

Beagle Boy

I hope for a day Far Beyond the Stars is not relevant anymore but... its not today

Vina

Far Beyond the Stars is to me one of the best moments in Trek, Jen pretty much nailed it with the points it was trying to drive home, as a sort of narrative about Trek in general being about hope for the future (even if the individual stories themselves can be bleak at times)

Curran Dobbs

Futurama did a shrinking episode. And I'm counting the Seinfeld "Shrinkage" episode more because I want to even though it doesn't "technically" count.

seven tessipates

so glad you enjoyed Far Beyond the Stars! you have such a good ear for instruments and music, i assumed you'd catch more of the actors on their voice! sometimes, it's so hard to catch it on a first watch. this is one episode Avery Brooks himself pushed for, to show how little time had passed since the 50s, and how fragile progress can be. sort of a variation on The Wizard of Oz, or even the 'grasshopper/monk' thought experiment. some real classic knowledge and wisdom being dispensed, an episode you catch more and more with each rewatch <3

Sykonee

Quite the contrast this week. Come to think of it, a LOT of S6 has wildly contrasting episodes one after the other...

Jober Velasco

I take it Jen, as busy as she is, hasn't looked much at behind the scenes or looked up the actors behind many of the characters. Even in the 1990s, well before the internet we're used to nowadays and the unlimited amount of information at our fingertips, most of us Trek fans knew who the actors behind the make up were and could recognize them out of character and out of uniform.

Wesley

Some references that Jen may have missed. Miles character who loves robots is an analogue for Isaac Asimov. And Nana Visitor's(Kira) character is a reference to various female writers who had to hide their gender in order to get work. Famously for Star Trek that is writer DC Fontana, who used various male pseudonyms. Also the book that Benny buys at the start is riddled with star trek references to original series episodes.

Jober Velasco

If I recall correctly, in the DS9 series documentary "What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (2018), it was mentioned that they did consider having DS9 be entirely the fictional works of writer, Benny Russel.

Peter41

Love these episodes. Slight spelling mistake in the thumbnail. 'One Little Shop'. Guessing a slip of the finger πŸ˜€

Slate

True, thought now it goes in the opposite direction, with straight white men (especially straight white Christian men) being enemy #1 of the lunatic left and still discriminated against in many places due to DEI.

Chaos T

In the DS9: Season 6 DVD Extras, Avery Brooks said about Far Beyond the Stars β€œI'd have to say, it was the most important moment for me in the entire seven years." and has said at various points that it is his favorite episode from the series. While Star Trek has been consistently good about the topics of racism throughout the franchise, a lot of times it's storytelling in allegory. It makes for good science fiction story telling but can sometimes miss the visceral, vile nature of racism and bigotry. I appreciate the writers and Avery Brooks as director taking the subject matter head on in a way maybe other series really couldn't. It felt like there was real pain behind Avery Brooks acting in this episode as if what happened to Benny was a reflection of what he experienced in real life. Far Beyond the Stars is one of the finest hours of tv in the Star Trek franchise.

Slate

Yes, just in the opposite direction now - straight white men (especially straight white Christian men) are enemy #1 of the lunatic left and are still discriminated against in many places due to DEI while anyone not straight and white gets special treatment and often no or little consequences for their actions.

Jen Murray

🀷 No matter what I do, I'm annoying someone. It's an interesting feeling to sit with while recording.

Ron

Hey Jen, since you love shrinking movies, you definitely need to check out, Inner Space (1987). This was practically written for you. I can't comment further. No spoilers.

Tom Evans

Avery Brooks has said that he thinks "Far Beyond the Stars" should have been a 2-parter, and I agree. If it was a 2-parter they could have had more of a story to connect Sisko's vision to the prophets, and we could have had a few more of the cast in different roles and out of their makeup, like Garak and Rom. I never have a problem identifying a face, but I know it's different for different people. My problem is names. I'll recognize someone no problem, but then I'll say "Oh it's... uh, that guy!" "One Little Ship" is sometimes affectionately, or disparagingly, called "Honey, I Shrunk the Runabout." Even though the show is not going deep into the Dominion War story at this point, it's still ever present in episodes like this.

Desmond

Thanks for putting up with us. πŸ˜‰

Desmond

Yes, various female writers including DC Fontana, who was on the regular writing staff of TOS and beyond.

Jen Murray

Thank you for indulging me 😊

Ian

Innerspace is on Jen's channel as is fantastic voyage both wonderful Jen reactions that she loved

Ian

Frig those that get annoyed Jen some of us appreciate you and all you do and never get annoyed cuz we get it πŸ’™

Jen Murray

I get literal anxiety while watching something if I know people will have expectations for it

Jen Murray

Just curious if there are a lot more episodes where I'll need to recognize faces like this one?

Summer

Being legally blind I either have to know what they look like or hear it in the voice myself, I cannot think of another that similar to this one in this fashion

Adam Harris

Maybe the super fans did, but as a more "casual" viewer who watched most of the episodes of TNG, I had no idea what Worf looked like out of his makeup. I only knew what the actors who played Quark and Garak looked like because I was familiar with them from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Dirty Harry, and they have very recognisable voices.

Markus W.

Not sure if it helps, but there are also (I hope) a lot of people who understand that you are watching these episodes for the first time while also trying to talk about them. So it’s completely fine to not get everything perfectly! I've probably seen all the episodes at least 20-30 times over the years and I still sometimes notice details I've missed (or forgotten about πŸ˜…).

Markus W.

Only slightly related (and I'm sure it's been mentioned before) but the same actor plays Weyoun and the Ferengi Liquidator Brunt. But that is very difficult to pick up on unless someone reads the IMDB credits (you know with character and actor names). Because the Ferengi makeup makes people almost unrecognizable. πŸ₯·

Markus W.

I think I was a super fan (as much as you can be as a kid/teenager with no tv of my own) but didn't really know what the prosthetics actors really looked like. Quark I knew from Buffy and Stargate and the rest of the main cast I picked up by process of elimination. I'm also pretty sure I did not recognize Nog, Martok, Dukat or Weyoun on my first watch. And to your larger point, I think Jen is (wisely) not looking at any BTS material since it would almost certainly contain huge spoilers.

Viper H

It's OK Jen, you only missed... 4 characters in Far Beyond the Stars πŸ˜‚ The short newsboy at the beginning is Aron (Nog), the illustrator with the cigar was JG (Martok), and the "cops" were Marc (Dukat) and Jeffrey (Weyoun). Write the words, Brother Benny. ❀

Viper H

The only annoying thing about you Jen is that I have to wait a week to see more! 🀣πŸ₯°

Viper H

You left out a shrinking movie you've seen that's one of my favourites: Innerspace!

Sykonee

There's a couple more down the line where you don't *need* to recognize faces, but are fun 'cameos out of make-up' if you catch 'em (ie: the Morn actor sitting in Morn's chair at Morn's wake).

Summer

Voyager +1

Summer

You never annoy Jen, some might feel its a conversation and state things strongly

Ash Fronhoffs

Love your reaction as always. Far Beyond The Stars is the sort of episode that really rewards a rewatch, it's easy to get caught up in the different setting with all the actors in alternative roles, totally get it. But I think you would really enjoy this a lot more on like its own merits on a second viewing, if you ever feel like doing that. Looking forward to the next two episodes :)

TimeTravelingPanda

"Land of the Giants (1968-1970)", 51 Episodes of tiny people goodness, with old school effects.

Adam Harris

I'd also recommend The Borrowers, a 1992 British TV series about tiny people, starring Ian Holm (best known as Bilbo from The Lord of the Rings).

Andrew Roach

Simple fact is you can't please everyone. Put it out of your mind while reacting and always be yourself. Sometimes reactors actually don't like movies we all like but I respect when they tell us that even if I disagree with them. When reactors watch movies which unknown to them are not well regarded and then say how great that movie was in the back of my mind I think is that true or are they just saying what they think we want to hear.

Andrew Roach

In terms of color or race just imagine back in the late 60s the hoops I imagine Gene Roddenberry had to jump thru to get a black woman on the bridge (Uhura) and later with the Cold War in full swing a Russian on the bridge (Chekov.) Actually Nichelle Nichols (RIP) wanted to leave the show by season 3 because her role was nearly non existent but Martin Luther King Jr. himself convinced her to stay because he said her just being there was very important.

Fr. Brench

I definitely missed half of the characters in Far Beyond The Stars the first two times I watched this episode. Watching it with you now a third time, I'm finally noticing how most of them really lean into their DS9 characters' voices in their first appearances to help us recognize them.

Brent Justice

The episode Far Beyond the Stars is very impactful for fans, recognizing their characters out of makeup. It was fun to see that when it happened, cause it is so unusual, and 4th wall breaking.

Brent Justice

In Far Beyond the Stars, it looked more like the 40's to me, maybe early 40's. Also, you might not have caught on, but it was the Prophets sending him the vision, a bit of a course correction for the Captain, he needed that to gain perspective.
