Magma is an awful character yes, but you have to think of the villagers as a pack of animals using herd mentality. Imagine, you are the only known group of humans on the entire planet. You have MAYBE 4 people who can defend the village against threats, and Magma is #2. Can you really risk losing 1/4 of your fighting force over disputes with him?
