"A happy ending? For folks like us? Wrong city, wrong people." - Johnny Silverhand

A Thanos ending... "What did it cost?" "Everything." -Avengers infinity war.

Man,I love this Anime! But damn, David's last words to Adam Smasher, in the German dub: "Like I give shit, Suck on my Construct!" ❤️‍🔥

Summerguy

You know what? Might as well react to the "Let you down" animated song on Youtube by CD Projekt themselves, since it's an extra episode to the edgerunners.

All my chooms hate that gonk Smasher

Ethan Campbell

It is a heartbreaking, but necessary and beautiful ending. "There are no happy endings in Night City" is a popular phrase for a reason. Night City is a place where the average person is lucky to survive, let alone make something of themselves. David could have ended up like his mother, caught in the crossfire or killed in some meaningless accident, another nobody swallowed up by the city without anyone giving a shit. Instead, he climbed to the top of Arasaka Tower, just like his Mom wanted him to, became a Night City legend, and gave the woman he loved a chance to achieve her dream, even if it meant sacrificing his own life to do it. David spent his life carrying the dreams of the people he lost, from his mother wanting him to reach the top of Arasaka Tower to Maine wanting him to become a legend. He may not have died the way he would have wanted, but who the fuck does? Death is untimely no matter when it comes, and I think what matters most is what you do with the time you have and the impact you leave on the people around you. David spent his life trying to become someone in a city that chews people up and spits them out, and in the end, he actually did it. He achieved his mother's dream for him, carried on Maine's legacy, and made sure Lucy could live hers. David could have tried to save himself, but instead, he made sure Lucy had a future. He gave up his own so she could have hers, and I think there's something genuinely beautiful about that. Compared to the average resident who dies forgotten, David got to the top, made a name for himself, and left something behind that mattered. He died, but he didn't die as a nobody. And in Night City, that's about as close to a happy ending as you can realistically hope for.

Jam

what fucks me up is, in the end, Lucy seemingly brings David back from the trenches of cyberpsychosis, if only for a moment. If David never had to put on the cyberskeleton, or if Adam smasher wasn't chudmaxxing in arasaka tower(if he was somewhere else he probably would've take too long to get there), David might've had a chance. If they managed to get away, get David out of the cyberskeleton, and downgrade him, he probably would've had a very real chance... oh well. in night city, you either die in a blaze of glory or you become a nobody, no in between. And all of this just for arasaka to barely be rattled and still have such a domineering presence over the games story a year later. Like mike pondsmith said, no individual can do anything to stop or save the world from itself and the megacorps, they can only save themselves.

C H O M PS

yeah the ending would've been a 10/10 for the story IF they didn't kill Rebecca, literally didn't add anything to the story. .

Before Rebecca's death: "I'm having so much fun" After Rebecca's death: >:(

True story, I have always grown up not really showing emotions much. last time I cried was in middle school. just learned to tough it out. about 3 years ago. I wake up. having a holiday at work. early morning around 8am. I start watching an anime movie. it was the made in abyss movie. and very rarely does something effect me on an emotional level. but after watching that show. I felt dirty, I went and did some yard work and stuff and even after that. I just felt off. never had depression. but I guess that is what it would feel like. just felt depressed as fuck around 1pm I'm done with everything. I decide. I want to watch something to lift my spirits. cyberpunk just released and it looks like a fun action -uplifting show so it will be the perfect show to up my spirit. Bitch, around 5pm I look like a fucking desperate housewife character. Just sitting on my couch. eating chocolate from a bowl. crying like a 5 year old having a complete mental fucking breakdown, WHY DOES EVERYONE I LOVE DIEEEEE hahahah. I look back and just think its funny.... but in a weird way. I kinda liked it... but I totally agree. its unnecessary sad. It went out of it way to go and just kick you in the fucking nuts..... After the show I went and played the game... and I remember this song just popping on the radio and my whole fucking mood just went sour.... like FUck you game.... I see what you did there.

Freitag

He is called smasher for a reason

Christo Badenhorst

No spoilers for season 2. but I just started it and I loved that in the Future David is respected and seen as a Edge-runner that basically stood up to Arasaka and rattled them - even if it was just a little.

Tenebris Narud

The main lead/writer or creator of the show has a qoute where he says "...so I just wanted to make the whole world sad… when people are sad, I'm a bit happy". I'd also offer a virtual hug but IDK how, so instead I'll just say I liked your reaction to the series and your reactions in general.

2026-10-30 00:00 By the way, Neila, I do not know if someone has already mentioned this, but before you start season 2: Wuthering Waves and Cyberpunk had a collaboration this summer, and the animated cutscenes are kind of an (un)official continuation of Lucy's story, but they are still worth watching as an OVGA episode.

Since Episode 10 probably left you feeling completely empty inside, you should look up the story from the Wuthering Waves collab (Patch 3.4). The writers basically created a canon-compliant 'Episode 11' that gives Lucy the closure Night City cruelly denied her. After the finale, Lucy is stuck on the Moon dealing with crippling PTSD and sleepless nights. Desperate to knock herself out, she holocalls Misty back on Earth for sleeping pills and guidance. Once she finally drifts off, her consciousness gets pulled into the Somnoire—a dream dimension—but her trauma follows her, manifesting Adam Smasher and Arasaka goons as living nightmares. A dream version of David steps up to hold Smasher off so dream-Lucy and Rebecca can get away. From there, Lucy teams up with the main characters of that world to fight back and destroy the nightmare version of Smasher once and for all. The best part is the end: before the dream collapses, Lucy actually gets to share a quiet, peaceful farewell with David and Rebecca. She wakes up back in her bed on the Moon, still on the line with Misty. Just like any dream, the exact details fade from her memory right away, but the crushing grief in her chest is finally lifted, and she tells Misty she just knows it was a good dream. Even if the dream fight itself is tied to the game's world, Lucy's side of the story—her grief, calling Misty, and finally finding peace—is treated as real context. After that brutal finale, it’s honestly the exact post-Edgerunners closure everyone needed.

"[Rebecca's] death doesn't make any sense!" Sadly, it makes perfect sense. At this point, Rebecca has lost almost everyone she cared about, and she knows she's losing David, too. And keep in mind that this is Rebecca. Multiple times through this series, she had to be pulled out of danger by someone else because she was just pissed off and standing there shooting at them instead of getting out of there. Heck, if you remember the scene where her brother was killed, the crew even had a specific protocol set up explicitly to knock Rebecca unconscious to get her out of danger when she refuses to cooperate. They had to use it there because, in her blind rage, she kept throwing herself at the guy that killed her brother, and almost died there multiple times. She shoots first and dodges later. And this time, there was no one there to look after her, anymore. David's already on his way out, and Lucy's barely keeping David together. And Adam's attack came too fast for anyone else to do anything. Yelling, swearing, shooting, and refusing to get out of the way of oncoming danger? That's how she lived her life, and that's how she was always going to die.

Ethan Campbell

That was the point of her death though. It was supposed to feel unnecessary. It was supposed to reinforce one of the biggest themes of the show, which is that Night City doesn't give a fuck about you or how much you mean to the people around you.

Yakasaman

I always interpreted Becca’s death as both Adam Smasher actively trying to twist the knife. (In universe reason) But I also think it’s cause Rebecca represents the people around David and the community he is building. She represented the ‘good’ part of David’s life that he kept walking away from. (My interpretation of Rebecca with in the story)

Morten Storvik

I mean, Rebecca was an armed threath and an obstacle to Adam. It actually makes perfect sense for him to take her out as much as her death hurts.

Twohearts Off

I've watched this anime 3 times, the first time I had the same reaction as you to the ending. It still makes me feel like crying. After rewatching it, I think it's a great ending for this show. Here is why I think Rebecca's death had to play out this way. Throughout the whole show, the author does a great job at making the viewer feel the same things as David. For instance, from the beginning, both the viewer and David are told that he's going to die, and both are in denial throughout the show. As for Rebecca's death, it feels extremely unfair and unnecessary, it pisses you off. That's how David feels at this moment. Both you and David want to see a classic fight with the hero somehow winning against the big bad guy, you want to see Adam Smasher pay for killing our sweet Becca, and deep down both you and David know it's not going to happen but you're angry so you don't think too much about it. For me that's the point of Rebecca's death, putting the viewer in David's shoes one last time for his final, very one sided fight. (I could write a whole essaye on why this ending so perfectly ties the show together, but no one got time to read that bullshit lmao)

Catalysta

A ton of missing context by just watching those cutscenes alone.

Chamoun101

True, there are of course longer videos with gameplay, but depending on the video, they are almost 3 hours. Imo, just for the *better ending*, the cutscenes are enough, but that is a valid point. Pentre

The ending feels like it goes too much into being just shock value instead just being a sad ending, mostly because of Rebecca, it feels disrespectful towards the role in the story. The other characters each had their own way of easing them into a bad ending, even Dorio's death was handled better and she was the most secondary/minor character in Maine's crew after Falco. They way they handled the ending makes the story feel really unsatisfactory and incomplete, at least I think in S2 they did a better job on the way the treated the characters.

Mister Taffy

Even in the game, characters die in unspectacular ways, even when you think you saved them. Characters that betray you, you think you will get revenge on them, only for someone else to beat you to it.

AuxOx

Wuthering waves had a collab event with Edgerunners that serves as a non-cannon but a very respectful sequel to this story btw. It is worth watching the cutscenes if you dont want to play the game and that reaction would be fun to watch.

Elijah

This show mad me cry 😢 And if I remember this season 1 supposed to be before the game. Edgerunners 1 2076 Cyberpunk2077 game 2077 Edgerunners 2 2078 Or that what I heard.

DotakuArt

Multiple people already summed it up pretty well but yeah, the ending is just par for the course when it comes to Cyberpunk. No happy endings in Night City as they say. The ending was very much aiming to make you sad and/or angry. Honestly Rebecca's death may have been the most Cyberpunk out of them all, senseless and sudden, dying how she lived. I personally loved the ending and the anime as a whole despite how genuinely sad it was but I also just adore Cyberpunk. I genuinely hope you can sit with it for a bit and you come around on it but if not that's cool too, it may just not be for you and that's fine. I enjoyed the reaction regardless ^^ looking forward to whatever you jump onto next.

Philotes

I had a similar reaction to you when watching it the first time but I eventually grew to love the ending. It makes it so much more sad (since it was unexpected unlike David that was foreshadowed for most of the anime) and so much more "cyberpunk", as in senseless death. It just shows that if you do dangerous shit like that, you will get unlucky sooner or later. You don't have a plot-armor that will only let you die when it makes sense. Maybe you die epically fighting Adam Smasher or maybe you get your head shot off by a "bare-dicked cyber-psycho" in a dirty back alley. And as you said, how would Rebecca die if not here? Would she leave David behind? Would she retire like Falco and Lucy? I feel like Rebecca was going to keep being a Mercenary until she died like this. It honestly does make sense only Falco and Lucy would survive since they are the only ones that knew when to stop. They retired and stopped pushing their luck. The rest like David and Maine, even if they survived, I feel they would keep doing crazy stuff until they died sooner or later Regarding Season 2, I just finished it and it was very meh. Not bad but nowhere as good as Season 1.

Virtuous_Wanderer

Becca had to die instead of falco because her feet wouldn't reach the pedals

Teemu Määttä

It's the genre. Like romance ends with love, cyberpunk as a genre ends with everyone dying, or being worse off than when we started. This is my third time watching and Rebecca still hits hard. For what it's worth I do love the series, and your reaction to it was great.

Ziantioxo Pixxa

sadly in the world of cyberpunk there rarely a "good ending" so yeah i understand if the ending is a bit extreme but if you understand the world it just makes sense it would end this way.

Alex Welford

If you are interested, there is a collab with Wuthering Waves that is semi-cannon and serves as an “Episode 11”

Ketanak

20:32: famous Neila's last words, unfortunatly

Ketanak

My own interpretation is that the only way to survive Night city is to have a dream or hope, David's dream was Lucy, Becca's dream was David. Even Kiwi, in a way her hope was to find someone she can trust. Even in the game, the one that survive are the one that still have hope at the end of the day. And falco, was needed for Lucy to survive.

drZ

Nah Neila I agree with you, they added too much edge to this edgerunner anime. No need to go plus ultra on the sad deaths. And what a shit way to go out. They did her worse than a dog in all those movies where a puppy gets killed for dramatic effect.

Virtuous_Wanderer

Fun fact about Adam Smasher's official Cyberware list. It reads like a Military Grade implant catalogue.

NyaviiVT

Can’t wait for you to React to Season 02 and this Ending …. Oh Boy oh boy that’s rough

LegendAsphalt89

well now that you're done, there's an easter egg where in the last scene of every intro was a foreshadowing of how Adam Smasher would kill David and it was by a bullet to the head.
