(Speculations) I don't think her desgin is new, just she was beat up so much by the bad guys that it left her permanently deformed. Klen basically just made her look like what she would look without the beatings.

Probably. The first thing Nell noticed was that she can speak in a normal way, reaching for her teeth. So that's probably it.

I feel you on the changing character design. While it might have an in lore reason behind why, it's one of the things I didn't enjoy some much about the Slime anime, either. The first evolutions of the Ogres were some of the better designs, in my opinion, it kept the grittiness/roughness of the underlying monsters they are, after that they just slowly devolved into prettier humanoids with cosplay horn accessories. That's not to say they don't have charm, it's just that their original charm go stripped out and replaced with a different type. Same with Nell here, she had a cute ugliness to her that was different from the norm and appealing from a character design stand point, then she was changed into a more generic design. Once again, nothing really wrong with the new design, just it comes at the expense of the old design, which was more unique, and, arguably, better. Personal gripes aside, still enjoying the show and the reacts :D
