It's the same gist as my first post, but if you're on a higher tier, you are able to enter your name into more Cassmas giveaways :)

The question for this tier is -

what is your non-negotiable holiday tradition every year (it does not have to be Christmas!)?

(if you answer both this one and the first post, your name will be entered twice!)

I have a cloth calendar with 24 slots in it, the purpose of which is to count down the days until Christmas. There’s a little mouse that is used to signify what day in December it is. Every year for every day in December, my wife and I will take turns moving the mouse, and will then do the “Christmas countdown calendar happy dance of joy”. Christmas spaghetti- the year my son was born (my second born) we moved into a new house and our oven went out on Christmas Eve. heidstuff

Gingerbread house making with my favourite people 😍

Rishal

My mom, dad, brother, and me all sit down and decide together what we're going to have for our Christmas dinner. We also somewhat follow the Italian tradition of having fish on Christmas Eve. Not always 7 different kinds of fish, but at least 2 or 3. Oh! And we decide what cookies we're going to make out of our list of holiday staples. We all have our favorites, so sometimes it is a bit of a negotiation.

M P

Holy shit I do this every year, with a candy cane in it.

Fernanda S

Every year, my family and some friends gather up to play "stolen santa" during the holliday season. It's a version of "secret santa" that's pretty popular in Brazil and it is always so much fun. Essentially, in this game, each participant brings a random wrapped gift and someone is chosen to start They choose a gift from the table, open it, and show it to everyone. The others, when it’s their turn, can either pick another wrapped gift or “steal” a gift that someone has already opened. When a gift is stolen, the person who lost it chooses another available gift, and it goes on until everyone has a gift

Kay

Rebekah

Skyla

Watching black Christmas and a Christmas story on the same night usually Christmas Eve

M P

It's not a proper Christmas dinner if it doesn't contain gumbo. I don't make the rules 🤷🏾

Jessica Sims

Growing up, I had such a thing for Donna Reed in It's A Wonderful Life, so I was glued to the TV when it came on. It ended up turning into a tradition to watch it every Christmas Eve, although my family didn't find out why until years later. It's been decades and the only thing that changed is my family will inevitably make a big deal about her first appearance.

Tarah

We always go out and get those soft pretzel bites & then look at christmas house lights.

August

Non negotiable is matching pjs with my wife and best friends. We get them, make Christmas cookies and watch holiday movies on their big couch with the tree light up and all our presents under it. I never really liked Christmas growing up but my lil family has made me love it more and more the older I get.

threekats

Staying in and watching movies in our PJs...

Sam

In a group chat with my extended family we’ll send updates about the wonderful, cheesy, low budget Christmas movies we’re watching. Think Friends and Family Christmas, Holiday Club, Last ExMas or anything on the Hallmark Channel.

Libby

It’s a bit of a non-answer but I have very few non-negotiables. Pretty down for a new tradition year round.

Kate

Fern

Christmas eve dinner out, then coming home getting into Christmas PJs watching Muppets Christmas Carol and then The Santa Clause

MK

I started an unofficial holiday with my sister in high school where we watch Home Alone and eat cheese pizza and drink Pepsi. We call it Little Jerk Festival. (Because of the quote in the movie "Look what ya did ya little jerk") We haven't lived in the same state for 6 years and we always either coordinate our parties on the same night or do a discord with just us. Every year since high school we are both in our late 30's now.

Tanya

Cassi

In my Polish upbringing, the first Saturday of December, kids leave their shoes/boots out around the house so that “Santa” can come drop off little presents (usually chocolate) in our shoes overnight. It’s called “Mikołajki.” We’re all adults now in our family but if I’m home visiting my parents around that time, they’ll put a little something in my shoes. It’s also the first day each year the Christmas tree goes up!

Angelica

Every major holiday I buy my nibblings (niece and nephews) some kind of toy or instrument that will drive their parents bananas but is sure to elicit mini human giggles. Most recently I got us nerf guns and a bucket of extra ammo. Along with eye protection so their parents had no excuse to say no! Prior to that I’ve gotten harmonicas, drums, maracas, and other stuff. My favorite was the accordion! (Made sure to do that one for Mother’s Day 🤭🤗). Core memories have been made despite the adults playfully threatening to kick me out whenever I show up with a large bag at their doorstep during holidays.

Blue

Lisa

Watching football on Thanksgiving, baking Christmas cookies in December, and a money based Easter egg hunt are my favorites 😂

Paulina

Cooking lots of mine and my wife’s favourite food while watching Harry Potter from the beginning. Staying up late to enjoy time together.

Meg Helen

We are currently revamping a lot of our Christmas traditions after leaving Christianity, but we are die-hard Halloween traditionalist! Our neighborhood goes all out, we host a party with family, and our kids trick or treat! We had family visiting for Halloween this year and I was like, "This is us at our most traditional, TBH!"

KJ

The adults in our family make handmade Christmas ornaments and exchanges them. My family has done it for 20yrs now. Our Christmas trees are full of homemade items every year.

Maggie C

lol the Christmas nap. Don’t judge me.

Kelsey Langdon

We aren’t super traditional anymore now that all my nieces and nephews are older, but I’d just say that any holiday we have is always celebrated with really good homemade food. Often times we’re cooking and baking together (BBQ or other things for the 4th, full spread on Thanksgiving, etc). Mostly I just think having any excuse to get everyone together is a good enough “tradition” 😊

Jenni

Muppets Christmas Carol! Me and my friends had a Christmas Carol marathon and watched like 10 different versions (or at least parts of them) and, while we went in biased, not a single one was able to match the magic of the Muppets and Michael Caine

Sithara

It’s become negotiable now that we’re all grown but my siblings and I used to insist on sleeping all in the same room on Christmas Eve to wake up together on Christmas morning

DJ

In the last few year a lot of my traditions have had to become much more negotiable unfortunately, but the ones that remain are basically just baked goods on certain holidays. Sweet potato and pumpkin pie on thanksgiving, and my MorMor's Swedish coffee bread on christmas

Lisa Tillery

I have to watch Die Hard. It’s not Christmas until Hans Gruber gets flung off a building. I also have to watch the other greatest Christmas movie of all time, A Muppet’s Christmas Carol. Light the lap, not the rat.

Alexha

Putting just as much, if not more, effort into hosting Friendsgiving to honor and appreciate our chosen family. I love my real family, but there's something so special being surrounded by people who love you for just who you are.

Hannah

My non negotiable is making Christmas cookies, an absolute must every year

Merle M

Every year since I was a kid, I've watched the Flintstones' Christmas. It's a musical! It's where Santa Claus sprains his ankle, and Fred has to take over to save Christmas. It's basically Tim Allen's Santa Clause, but released 20 years earlier... It has a very wonderful and very nostalgic soundtrack. I watch it every year.

Mostly Amy

The Christmas Eve party I inherited from my Nana. When she was getting too old to host at her house my wife and I took over. Also, the kiss at midnight. I will set an alarm to go off, wake up, kiss my wife, and we will fall back asleep. But growing up I always loved that tradition and couldn’t wait for that.

Baking gingerbread cookies with my friends on the first sunday of Advent. We're a hospitality-working bunch so the actual Christmas/NYE weeks are hell for us, hence the tradition taking place in late november/early december.

Robin

I like to sleep until I wake up naturally. Then leisurely coffee, breakfast, and getting dressed (maybe) without a timetable. We don't decorate at all because we have a house full of rescue fur babies, but I love to snuggle and watch their antics.

Sheisaukje

New year’s with just our little family of humans (2) and pets (3 now) - we have never celebrated this with anyone else for the last 10 years and it has become our own tradition (mainly because we want to keep an eye on our little furry children while the fireworks go off)

The Art of Random

Months planning my costume for Purim (it’s a Jewish holiday, where we dress up in costumes and go to parties). I usually take my costumes very seriously, and last year I dressed as Vi (from arcane), but this year I still have no idea 😱 which means I’m already late for planning 😫

Forever ago the year it was released, instead of engaging in the consumer hysteria that is Black Friday, friends and I went to see Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The following year, I didn’t have off from work so I listened to the movie soundtrack. Same thing the next two years & before I realized a tradition was born and now, singing along to the soundtrack if my way to kick off the holiday season. #alittlepriest
