I did this last year and now, here we are again -

Here's the deal: I love the holidays. And here on my patreon, I refer to the holidays as Cassmas!

Comment here with your favorite holiday tradition (does NOT have to be Christmas; just whatever wintery holiday/traditions you celebrate!) for a chance to win a hand-selected book-lovers themed holiday basket (with a few extra HCLU-specific items thrown in for good measure). The person randomly selected will receive a message sometime next week to confirm their address!

I, personally, love to wake up really early on Christmas morning and watch Christmas movies, while the sky is still dark, and the only illumination comes from the Christmas tree lights.

I can’t believe you didn’t include a picture of our Christmas tree!

Cryptid

I kick off every holiday season by watching Christmas Vacation the night of Thanksgiving. We also play board games on Christmas Day with my in-laws. Those are two of my favorite traditions. 🎄

Carolina Barra

My favorte tradition is organizing christmas decorations with my mother while listening to the beatles! 😌

Erica

Ever since I was a little kid, I've loved driving around and looking at Christmas lights. My parents used to take us and I now get to take my toddler. He's a little over two so it's the first year he's excited about it! There's a few neighborhoods locally that the whole neighborhood decorates and syncs their lights to music.

Christmas breakfast then presents in our PJs

Vanessa Refuerzo

My favourite tradition is having dinner and then watching Christmas movies on Christmas Eve (I do the celebration on Eve rather than day) with eggnog, a blanket and dessert to share with friends ❄️ happy holidays. Cheers!

Hana Huskovic

We did not celebrate Christmas when I was kid, as my family was of Muslim background. Once we moved here, my family found a liking to the camaraderie of the holidays, so we preceded to celebrate them. Before my grandmother passed, she would place money in six different envelopes, and we would choose the envelope at random. They could range from $80 to $130 depending on who got it. I always said that we should celebrate democracy, so my grandmother would make the increments smaller (of course when this was the case, I always got the one with the most). We would then make cookies and listen to bad Christmas music and watch the Grinch and Elf. In some instances, we would choose a movie at random and make hot chocolate and listen to our grandmother try and understand the premise of the movie (English was not her first language). That was our holiday tradition. My wife and I are trying to bring it back

Tiffany Wells

Same Monica! We need the Xmas tree pic stat! My favorite tradition is getting matching pajamas with my wife and our dog, Riley! We put our tree up the week of thanksgiving and decorate and watch Christmas movies for a full 36 days to really get all enjoyment and movie into the fray! Besides the obvious, Christmas Vacation, all I want for Christmas gets played every other day! Happy holidays ❤️💚🎄

Sara

As a kid my favorite tradition was going to my grandmother’s for Christmas Eve to make cookies and waking up to cinnamon rolls for breakfast. More recently, my favorite tradition has been the gift swaps my friends and I do!

Jordan Wieme

Omg! I loveee the holidays. We have a few traditions that I’ll share-We love to bake and decorate a TON of sugar cookies with my MIL and we give them as gifts to friends, and my city has a really nice botanical garden that has an event called “winter garden aglow” where there’s amazing Christmas lights everywhere and it’s fantastic to walk with hot cider or cocoa. I also really love Christmas Eve- I play in a church band and we do several services on Christmas Eve and it’s a fun time with some of my favorite friends and we bring food and have just a little sin fire whiskey throughout the night with the last service ending right at midnight. I love the feeling of it being so quiet and still in the city but seeing everyone’s lights still lit.

Anmol

I did not celebrate Christmas as a child since I am from India and I moved to America recently. This is my first year putting up a Christmas tree and I am starting to build traditions. I invited my friends over for hot chocolate this past week and I watched Carol under the christmas tree lights this weekend.

Jess Bullock

After dinner on Thanksgiving I put up our tree and watch elf while we decorate ❤️ it's a fairly new tradition over the past few years now that I don't work in retail where the holiday spirit sucked the life out of me!

Dalila Ribeiro

I wish I would have grown up with Christmas traditions, because I am absolutely in love with them. But it was never that stable or consistent for that. I always tried to generate some along the years but with moving away from home among other things I never managed to keep always the same. But putting up a tree with Christmas songs, even if it is at work, will always make me enjoy!

Alex L

My favorite holiday tradition is that even as grown adults me and my brother invade my moms house during the holidays. Kids and all and we spend the entire week together. Baking, cooking, arguing lol 😂

M Hills

A few years ago, my wife and I started doing the Icelandic “books and chocolate” tradition with each other on Christmas Eve, and it is now the highlight of the season for me.

Shelley S.

On Christmas Eve my family - me and my wife, my 4 siblings, their spouses and kids, and my parents - gather at my parents house in the evening for shrimp and various appetizers. We indulge in spirits and wine and home made eggnog. Then we all play some “Reindeer games” like who can throw the most ping pong balls in giant Santa pants and putting a plastic spoon in your mouth and trying to “shovel” cotton balls into a bowl. At 8pm It’s a Wonderful Life starts playing and we all huddle together to watch while drinking hot chocolate, tea, or coffee. It’s hectic, loud, and pretty perfect.

Sue R.

I love waking up and making homemade hot chocolate (with Baileys of course). We then put on a Christmas movie and open up presents. My wife makes a delicious breakfast that we can graze on. From there I by play whatever video game Santa brought me, while my wife builds a Lego set. It’s pretty wonderful.

KJ

We make homemade ornaments then exchange them every year as tradition. I don’t think we’ve ever had store bought ornaments on our tree because of this tradition. I love getting to craft them every year and seeing the designs that family chose. We particularly love getting to hang the ones that passed family have made. We’ve been doing it for 20+ years now.

Tanya Marione

Definitely the yule log on tv. Last year Netflix got creative with the Frozen version. Kids always wake us up for gifts. Santa footprints and cookies eaten verification... and then opening gifts youngest first. Cuddling with kids, kitties and my wife. Pancakes at some point.

Sonia

I’m not part of a tradition family and I’ve never had a partner over the holidays to fall into theirs but I do like to reread Christmas scenes in my favorite books. Me and my dogs usually go on a walk (they’re old so they ride in a wagon for most of it) and I look at the lights in my neighborhood and am grateful for another year of health

Stormchaser1117

Christmas eve at my parents with all my relatives and family friends for dinner and just being together then Christmas morning with my wife while we have breakfast together, open presents then go back to my parents with just my siblings and their kids for presents and dinner.

Kristy

My favorite is when my brother and his family come down and I get to spend spend time with my nieces and nephews. We watch Christmas movies and play games. Watching them open their presents. It’s always exciting to see how happy they are.

Miranda

My family doesn’t have many traditions, at least not consistent ones. But, one thing we do every year is get together, usually on Christmas Eve. Everyone brings a little something to eat and we have some sort of gift exchange while drinking hot chocolate or wassail. When my cousins and I were younger, all of us got gifts while the adults did secret Santa. Now that we’re adults, some years we do Secret Santa or another gift exchange. Last year we did what we call “K-mart Christmas.” Everyone has a $25 budget and has to buy everyone else gifts in one store without going over. It’s a lot of fun and leads to some interesting gifts!

Jamie

My favorite holiday tradition is going to Longwood Gardens with my wife followed by dinner at our fav Italian restaurant

kassandra gravel

When I was a kid my mom used to ask my dad to enter the house by a window and walk around with his boots full of snow. I also had a phone line in my bedroom and she would make me call Santa. Also my grandmother loved the holidays her house was so illuminated we could have seen it from space. As an adult what I like the most is the baking. And the advent Calendar. Because who doesn't love to eat a chocolate first thing in the morning?

Claire Summers

When we were growing up my mom would make homemade cinnamon rolls. There is home video footage on an old tape somewhere of a tiny me helping her drizzle icing over them. She passed away in my teens but I still make cinnamon rolls every Christmas morning to remember her. 🎄

Court Hanson

Mine is gifting a book on Christmas Eve and reading it that night

Eabha

We have this really bad picture of my brother in a santa hat from one of his school plays in primary school. Every year around this time, it somehow is resurfaced and stuck somewhere funny, like on the mantle or in the cupboard. I never know who actually puts it up, but once its hung and you find it, you have to move it to different spot for someone else to find. We keep track of who finds it and where and how long it took to find it. The person with the best spot and the longest time hid gets a prize Christmas morning. It started as a joke between my sister and I, but nows its a yearly thing. Its really silly and fun and my brother hates it (he secretly loves it).

Betsy Walker

Family board/card games all day long

Lauren N.

We do Jólabókaflóðið on Christmas Eve with real hot chocolate and it’s so cozy.

Nicole P.

My favorite holiday tradition is making a gingerbread house with my sister every Christmas Eve!! It doesn’t always stay up or look too great… but the laughs & memories are what always make it so much fun!

Coffee Cup

I don’t have Christmas traditions as my family doesn’t really celebrate Christmas. It’s usually a simple dinner with whichever family member is not on a trip elsewhere for the holidays. But the past 4 years, I’ve been working the Christmas shift at work. It makes me happy that me volunteering to take it allows for my coworkers that do celebrate and have beautiful traditions to stay home with their families. So I guess that’s the one tradition I’ve made for myself! (Not in a poor me way, I swear, I still have dinner with my family in the evening and it’s lovely)

Sophia Barrett

My favorite holiday tradition would either be doing a movie day on Christmas day or making latkes on the first night of Hanukkah!

Deanna Hauck 🏳️‍🌈

My mom always makes homemade chili on Christmas Eve and that’s really the day all of us get together rather than Christmas Day. I have a large family (7 sisters) and my favorite thing we do is talk about our childhood and all the dumb things we used to do and what we fought about. We tease each and bring up stupid stuff I have no idea how they remember spend the entire evening laughing.

comic-book-jawns

My family puts up and decorates our Christmas tree on Christmas Eve... and then we leave it up until like February 😄

Carrie Kaler

Since moving to the east coast, me and my wife go to NYC to do winter village at Bryant Park, Rockettes, and see the tree. But my fondest memory is of my dad reading 'The Night Before Christmas' to us on Christmas Eve.

Amy

We make kringle on Christmas Eve to have for breakfast while we open gifts Christmas morning. Kringle is a frosted, flaky, Swedish pastry. It has a subtle almond flavor and to me, tastes like Christmas!

Chris

Blast Christmas Music, drink cocoa and drive the neighborhood looking at the light.

Daphne

Jewish family, so our Christmas traditions are sleeping right though breakfast, having pancakes for lunch, Chinese food for dinner (originally because they're usually the only restaurants open on Christmas, but now it's a true tradition in its own right), a nice fire, a happy movie, tea, and books to read!

E

A Merry Christmas poster I had framed

Jenna McMichael

On Christmas Eve we pick up a couple dozen amazing tamales from our favorite Mexican restaurant and spend the evening over at our best friends' house having dinner and watching Christmas movies.

Audrey

I love watching the Grinch with my Wife and daughter on Christmas day ❤️

Mel

My wife and I will host our 6th annual HoliGays party the week before Christmas. All of our favorite gay friends in the same gay place having a gay ole time!

Liz

My favorite Christmas tradition began the year DOMA was struck down with getting married and a personalized couple's 1st Christmas ornament. Each year since our 1st Christmas, our holiday tree becomes a living testament to the love and memories my wife and I shared as a couple. From our first ornament as a married couple to another one each year commemorating big things, dream trips and cherished memories, our tree tells the story of our journey together. Each ornament reflects not only the year's theme for our family but also the growth of our love and size of our family. Every year when we get the tree up and the box of ornaments out, we look at the inscriptions on the front and handwritten on the back as we listen to Christmas songs, drink cider. I find it so heartwarming to go down memory lane, to see how our family of furbabies has expanded over the years, their playful spirits captured in the ornaments hanging from the branches. From joyous moments to the passing of a beloved furbaby, each year's ornament holds a piece of my and my wife's shared history together. We both look forward to deciding what was the year's theme and what kind of personalized ornament. One year, we are a family of moose after a close call, another in a VW bus after a year of national park travels. Our tree stands with all our personalized ornaments as a symbol of the diversity and richness that love brings into our lives. I'm grateful for every moment we've shared and every ornament that graces our tree, making it a canvas of our journey. Deciding on, getting and decorating our tree with our collection of personalized ornaments is my most cherished and favorite holiday traditions.

Mine was started one year when I could not sleep. I found my dad just sitting in the dark with the Xmas lights on thinking over the year that was. Now from the second a tree goes up in a place I am at (even if merely a hotel I’m In for work) if I can’t sleep - I find myself to said lights around the tree and do the same.

MC

Burning rag dolls on New Year’s Eve to symbolically banish the negative aspects of the year that is about to end

Charlene Chen

I love illustrating my partner and my christmas cards and getting them printed and sent out! It’s so fun to think of unique designs and we always end up feeling really attached to them. This year it’s us (and our cat) illustrated as Peanuts characters singing around Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree :)

Amy

Watching ELF with the family.

Heidur Maria

We celebrate on the 24th here in Iceland so we all have dinner and open presents after. It’s a big tradition to give books here. We usually get a few, then after all the presents have been opened we will read while having second dessert. It’s super cozy and I love it.

Clara Nhu

Official answer : love to see my nieces and nephews open their gifts. Unofficial answer : GOOD FOOD AND CHAMPAIGN

Dr. Kat Crispin

It used to be curling up by the fire, watching Christmas movies and the snow coming down after a candlelit Christmas Eve service. Since marrying my wife, we are excluded from both our families so we are working on figuring out our new traditions. Last year we put on Christmas movies and read books all day.

Sarah S.

My wife and I make homemade hot chocolate, grab the dog, and get in the car to drive all around town to look at Christmas lights. We usually do this every weekend in December. It's our Saturday night date.

a

My wife and I have a Christmas tradition in which we take a book off of our bookshelf that we know the other hasn’t read, wrap it, and gift it. It’s a good way to not spend money on gifts and try to rec something you know they’ll enjoy. We live abroad so we also go to a candy store and select stocking stuffers for each other, choosing some pretty wild candy not usually available in the US.

Jen Fernandez

My absolute favorite Christmas tradition is that all of the women in my dad's family get together (no men or kids allowed) for a whole day to bake/make all sorts of goodies while we do quite a bit of drinking. We did that this weekend and as per usual it was a blast! My family drives me nuts at times but I always look forward to this one day each year.

Heidi

I have a wreath with little skulls that I've hot glued Santa hats onto. Putting it up (and listening to my neighbor's mother-in-law mumble about the devil across the hall from him because of it) will never cease to amuse me all month long.

Lexi Le

My father and mother in-law moved to Misquamicut, Rhode Island about 6 years ago. My wife and I got married there 5 years ago. We now have an anniversary and Christmas tradition of visiting Misquamicut and walking around the beach looking for sea glass on Christmas day. On Christmas Eve, the wife and I have Santa Brunch/Anniversary Brunch at the Ocean House with the family. It's a bit repetitive, but there is something warm that fills me up with joy knowing that we can come together reliably each year for this event.

Mary Votava

My new favorite tradition is splitting the holidays with my and my fiancée’s families! Getting to share in each-other’s traditions and celebrate twice is so fun!:)

Janet

Making holiday candy with my sister, driving around on Christmas Eve to see the Holiday decorations and having a family dinner on Christmas night!

Shawna

My family drives up to my grandma’s house, who lives about 2 1/2 hours away. Each year there’s this huge flea market that my grandma, mom, and I go to every year. Sometimes there’s not really any good stuff there but we always get pretzels at this one stand and have a great time.

Marilia Brocchetto

Favorite holiday tradition is celebrating our anniversary with my wife. Our first date was on 12/26, and we got engaged 4 years later on 12/25!

Cassiana Umetsu

My favorite family tradition is that on Christmas Eve, everybody goes to my Bachan's house (Bachan = grandmother in Japanese) and brings a gift. It can be anything from an iPhone to a pack of gummy bears; nobody judges, you bring what you can. We play bingo all night with the gifts! It's very entertaining, and everybody can play all night; nobody gets sleepy before midnight!

Bethany

We have a family tradition of receiving new holiday themed pyjamas on Christmas Eve, it still remains special into adulthood! Who doesn't love fresh new PJs!?

Amber Mitchell

My favorite Christmas tradition is opening up one present on Christmas Eve night (typically a pair of Christmas pajamas and a snack) to sit down and watch all the best Christmas movies hot chocolate in hand.

Haley Cass

I honestly think that is very sweet! Your coworkers are lucky to have you

Haley Cass

Love the inclusion of Hanukkah tradition! I love knowing all kinds of holiday traditions

Cat Crittenden

We have Boiled Custard with whiskey and breakfast bread during present opening

Haley Cass

That sounds lovely! I should have specified this, but I truly did mean any holiday tradition, holidays that aren't Christmas included :) I'd love to hear about any Hanukkah traditions!

Lex F

Every year, my wife and I go on a double date with my parents to dinner then driving around to the see various light displays. Usually ending with stopping at a new bakery, ice cream shop or something like that to talk about our favorite displays.

Haleigh Heyne

Baking holiday cookies with my kids!

Liz Hendrick

Baking cookies or wrapping presents with holiday movies playing in the background that I know by heart.

Morgan Kings

In our home it's alternating traditions each year as we're in different places on odd and even years, but the constant has remained tacos and vegan truffle making on Christmas Eve!

Xuan Tran

Mine is watching Polar Express and Carol on Christmas night

Slac1107

Making struffoli with my grandma, she also taught me how to cook

Denise

My favourite holiday tradition is my Dad reading us Twas’ the night before Christmas. To this day, every Christmas Eve we stop in at my parents for the reading (I’m 42 and my brother is 47), now there are spouses and grandchildren in tow.

Jenny Graham

My favorite tradition in my family is celebrating Thanksmas. My parents are snowboards and go south in the winter time. So my whole family celebrated Thanksgiving, Christmas and several birthdays all on the same day. It's pretty chaotic but I love it sooo much! I have brought my wife and child for 10 years now and it's so awesome to watch my nieces and nephews grow up and bring their new families too!

Liam Lintemuth

Let me preface with this by saying, my dad never cooked. He does now, but when I was younger it was like 5 times a year at most. One of those times is New Years eve. The family would get together and my dad would grill steak (Yes even in Michigan) and make crab legs. We would all eat and wait for the ball to drop.

Jodell Clingo

I love waking up early Christmas morning, make coffee for my wife and I. I always go wake her up gently once it’s ready. Then we sit by the tree, with the fire channel on in the back ground.

Angie Bobinger

I love the quiet mornings of all the holidays but Christmas morning especially because I get to wake up with my little family and just vibe together as we enjoy the quiet serenity and just enjoy each other’s company. Drinking hot chocolate and watching any Christmas movie that happens to be on tv. Then cooking a small feast for the two of us. I get so excited to give the gifts I put so much thought into and see the smiles on all my family’s faces even if we’re only together through a FaceTime call.

Dani Seneca

On Christmas Eve, my wife and I let our kids open up once present to play with before Santa comes. And then we all wear matching pajamas the next morning opening presents

Kristen Smiddy

My favorite tradition is Christmas Eve boxes with my two kids. Every year I get them pjs, a plush, a board game, and book. We make homemade hot chocolate and do a movie and game night and it’s by far my favorite thing during the holidays.

Noelle

My family usually does a big meal on Christmas Eve with friends and extended family members. On Christmas Day, we all open our presents while our mom takes pictures. We basically just have a chill day in our pajamas and watch movies together. Plus eating tamales!

Mostly Amy

Ah my favorite holiday tradition would have to be throwing the annual Christmas Eve party at my house. I took over the task from my Nana when she became too old to host and I finally bought a house. We fill it with family and games and good food. I work in eLearning design so I create a giant quiz we all sit down to play. This is by far the best part of my holiday.

Kelsey Langdon

My family does a big get together Christmas Eve with games for the kids and games for the adults, with prizes. We have some sort of themed potluck, bake tons of home-made sweets and things together, and just hang out in our pajamas (and we finally did the matching thing last year).

Josiah Dapper

My cousin and her family, who are not Jewish, will invite me, who is Jewish, over during Chanukah for latkes and to light the menorah one night. It is such a family, home-based holiday, and I love that they embrace me this way.

Court

The kids and I love to take a Christmas Eve walk around our neighborhood to look at all the lights! We live in Arizona so the temperature is usually perfect for some hot chocolate and just light jackets or sweaters.

Stella Johnson

Definitely love the Christmas Eve/Christmas day family suppers. In our home we would also watch Christmas movies, and on Christmas Eve we could pick one gift to open - Something we also let our two little ones do. Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas” has now become part of our Christmas Day celebration traditions, too. 😁

drocks27

Probably too late but i have been trying to recreate my father's cookies. he made them every christmas but they were very unique.

Sarah Watts

Our FRIENDS and Taylor Swift ornaments are our favorites. Also the ornaments of our dogs. We have 2 trees this year because my wife is a travel nurse so we’re living in 2 houses right now (not separately) which I guess is pretty unique to us

Haley Cass

not too late, but i am very curious as to what these cookies are?

Haley Cass

opening a present on xmas eve was also a tradition in my family growing up!

Celestia Nightane

My favourite holiday tradition is walking through the floodlit streets, with my family. We have that habit of drinking mulled wine and eating churros on the Christmas market every year. And we always let our slippers under the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve
