Around an hour later…
You’re now back at your apartment. Aunt Cara and Ash are in the kitchen preparing the dinner while you and Uncle Luka are relegated to setting up the table and ambiance. You try to grab the plates but they’re too high up and Uncle Luka stopped you from using your power to reach them. Instead, he hands you the two empty wine glasses and you help him bring them over to the dining table.
It is at this moment that you realize something is missing. There should be at least a flower in the middle of the table, but you forgot to buy it earlier. You need to improvise. Hmm… Think Sasha, what other stuff can you put there? Aha! Maybe you can make a card with a romantic message; you certainly have the materials in your room. You quickly bolt to your room.
“Thank you for the help, Sasha—Hey! Don’t run!” you hear your uncle calls out to you,
“Sorry, Uncle Luka!” you call back as you step into your room.
You swiftly grab your “toolbox”—not a real toolbox like your dad’s—but it’s filled with equally cool crafting materials and tools! Next, you pull out your case of colorful markers and a sheet of red craft paper, before finally sitting down at your desk. You try to come up with some romantic words but your mind is purely blank. You can’t really draw anything yet because you want the pictures to be relevant to the message. Well, Uncle Luka might have more experience in this kind of thing.
You decide to call out to him from your room since the door is open anyway. Not a minute passes and he appears beside you, literally. He’s so lazy sometimes.
“What’s up?” he asks.
“Uncle Luka! I need your help and… well, maybe not expertise, but I need your experience. I wanna make a romantic card to put in the middle of the table, but I don’t know what to write!” you explain.
“Huh, so you want some romantic quotes to put on it?” He rubs his chin thoughtfully before pulling out his smartphone. “Wait. Let me try finding some inspiration on the Internet.”
You fiddle with your markers idly as you wait. Glancing at the clock, you notice that it’s already around 3:30. Wow, time flies, but you still have enough time to set up the dinner nicely.
“Alright. I’ve got one,” Uncle Luka says and you can see a slight smirk pulling at his lips before he snickers, “It says, ‘Are you a horse? Because I can ride you all night long.’”
“I don’t get it,” you frown. “How is that supposed to be even romance-related?”
“You’re not even old enough to know romance,” Uncle Luka counters. “Just trust me on this one, Sasha. Your dad and Takashi will get it.”
Well, it’s true you don’t really know anything about romance other than whatever tidbits you can glean from the cheesy telenovela Aunt Cara usually watches. So, you just shrug and write it down, doing it slowly to make sure your handwriting is as neat and perfect as possible.
“Is that all, kiddo? You need me to help you with decorating the card?” your uncle asks.
“Nope. I’ve got this, Uncle! Thanks for the help,” you tell him, still focused on your current task.
“Alright. I’ll go back to setting the table, then,” he says before blinking away again.
What should you draw to fill in the space? Hmm… Riding horses… Aha! Cowboy! Grabbing a brown marker, you start drawing a horse from memory and then add a stickman cowboy on top of it. To make sure that your dad knows that it’s a cowboy, you add a cowboy hat and a lasso, and for good measure, a “yee-haw” in a speech bubble.
Next, you grab some scraps of other brightly colored craft papers and start cutting out different-sized heart shapes. “Happy Valentine’s Day!” you write at the biggest heart cutout before gluing it to the front of the folded card along with all the other smaller hearts. Maybe a sprinkle of glitter here… and there… and it’s finished!
Holding out the card in front of you, you nod in satisfaction as you admire your handiwork. You tread down the hallway, out of your room, and into the kitchen and dining room area, with the card in your hands.
Almost immediately, your nose is assaulted by the fragrant meals being cooked. You immediately steer to the kitchen first instead of your original destination, the dining room. Ash is taking out a batch of french fries and dumping them into a big bowl along with the other previously-cooked fries. They grab the salt shaker and start sprinkling some salt in before tossing the fries to make sure they are coated nicely.
“Whoa! Can I have one, please?” you ask as you step closer.
“Sure!” Ash says and you can see the proud smile on their face.
You grab one and eat it in one bite. It’s hot and you pant to cool down your tongue. “Ouch, ouch! Hot!” you gasp.
Ash panics before grabbing an empty glass, filling it with water, and bringing it to you. You gulp it down gratefully.
“What’s going on back there, kids?” Aunt Cara asks, still focused on searing the steaks. “Don’t eat all the fries, okay? Or there’ll be none left for Viktor and Takashi.”
“Sasha just ate one, Mom. There are still plenty,” Ash replies before pointing at the card in your hand. “Ooh, what’s that?” they ask curiously.
Oh, right! The card! “I made this Valentine’s Day Card to put on the table. Check it out!” you beam excitedly.
Ash marvels at the cover of the card, trailing their finger over the heart cutouts and some of the glitter area before opening it. “‘Are you a horse? Because I can ride you all night long’,” they read carefully. “What does that have to do with Valentine’s Day or the date?” They glance at you, puzzled.
“I don’t know too,” you admit. “But, Uncle Luka was the one who suggested this and he knows more than I do about this sort of stuff, so I just went with it.”
Ash nods before handing it back to you. “Well, it looks pretty! I love the cowboy drawing!”
“Aww, thanks, Ash. I’m gonna go put this on the table now,” you tell them as you walk over to the dining table.
It seems like Uncle Luka has really outdone himself. The wooden dining table has been covered with a white disposable table cover. In the middle, a small aromatic candle has been and red-colored napkins are folded neatly on the plates. All of these materials, you just bought with Aunt Cara and Ash earlier. Only a flower is missing, which irks you. How could you have forgotten about that?
Tip-toeing, you stretch your arm so you can set the card you’ve just made in the middle—or at least near it; you don’t want it to catch on fire by accident. Glancing around, you search for Uncle Luka and see him rifling through your dad’s collection of CDs.
You decide to join him, sitting on the soft carpet beside him. “What’re you looking for, Uncle Luka?”
“A CD that will help set the mood,” he answers simply as he discards another CD to the side.
You pick up the CDs that he has set aside, presumably they are the ones that have potential. Classical music, piano music, and jazz music. Your dad doesn’t really play too much music in the house unless he’s doing some cleaning.
“I think those are our only options,” your uncle sighs, putting the other CDs back in their place. “How about you choose which one?”
“This one!” you exclaim, showing him the jazz music. It’s the only one out of the three you remember hearing your dad plays—or maybe it’s just more memorable than the other two.
“Kenny G, huh? Classic,” your uncle chuckles as he takes the CD and inserts it into the CD player. Almost immediately, the sound of the familiar smooth saxophone drifts through the whole apartment. The apartment that you’re living in with your dad is not too big and it has an open plan design, meaning that the song still reaches the dining table and even the kitchen.
“Whoa, the music does add to the vibe,” you say.
Uncle Luka laughs as he ushers you back to the kitchen area. It seems like Aunt Cara has just finished cooking the meal and is plating the perfectly-cooked steaks on each plate and arranging the green beans and the french fries artistically.
“Damn,” Uncle Luka says. “Those look so good. Maybe we should go have some steaks as well for dinner.”
“As long as you’re paying,” Aunt Cara replies, her grin falls as she glances at the clock. “Also, help me clean up quick before they arrive!”
You and Ash take a seat on the bar stools set in front of the kitchen island as Aunt Cara and Uncle Luka work in tandem; Uncle Luka washes the dirty pans and other cookware while Aunt Cara is cleaning the countertops and stove.
“If I knew that we would be doing a lot of cleaning up and dishes tonight, I would have brought Sebastian over to help out,” Uncle Luka mutters as he scrubs on a pan.
“Yeah, yeah, you spoiled boy. Just keep on scrubbing,” Aunt Cara replies, wiping down the countertop she used to prepare the meal.
You notice Ash is looking at the delectable-looking cupcakes you guys bought. You’d be lying if you say you haven’t been thinking of eating one as well. Maybe…
“Aunt Cara,” you begin. “Can Ash and I share a cupcake?”
She turns to you, pursing her lips in thought. “I don’t know, Sasha… We’re about to go have dinner soon…”
You send her a pleading look. “Pleasee, Aunt Cara. I’ll have half and Ash can have half.”
She sighs, “Fine… Only one, okay?”
“Yay! Thank you, Aunt Cara!” you squeal and Ash quickly grabs the box and opens it. They grab one with a big red heart icing on top of it, splitting it into two with their hands. The parts turn out to be unequal, with one being slightly bigger than the other one. Without hesitation, they hand the bigger half to you shyly, their cheeks lightly flushed. “Here you go, Sasha. Happy Valentine’s Day.”
You blink in surprise before smiling genuinely and accepting it. “Thanks, Ash. Happy Valentine’s Day as well.” The two of you toast the cupcake halves before devouring them in two bites.
Half an hour later…
Uncle Luka, Aunt Cara, Ash, and you are all hanging out in the living room, just chatting about various stuff including your activities in school. Aunt Cara has put the cooked meals inside the oven to keep them warm. Your lively conversation is halted when the doorbell rings out, the shrill sound cutting through the whole apartment. The four of you look at each other before springing to your feet.
You and Uncle Luka go to answer the door and there stand Rin and their father. Takashi is looking real dapper, with a sleek and expensive dark blue suit and dress pants. His white shirt is buttoned up to the neck and an equally dark tie sits on his chest. The subtlety of the golden-colored cufflinks and collar clip perfect the whole outfit. Takashi is smiling awkwardly while holding a rose in a vase in one hand. Wait…
Glancing at Rin, you can see them smirking smugly. Uncle Luka invites them in and begins talking with Takashi as they walk toward the dining room. You decide to walk Rin to the living room where Ash is also waiting on the sofa.
“Hey, Rin,” you greet. “Is it your idea to bring the flower in a vase?”
“Yes. I.. have a feeling you guys will somehow forget about it,” Rin answers, the smirk still on their face.
“For once, I’m actually grateful for your smart-ass-ness,” Ash mumbles, which makes Rin scoff. “I’ve never seen your dad dressing up so… formally before. I suppose it is your doing as well?”
“Of course… I can’t have him attending a dinner date simply in a polo shirt, khaki shorts, and sandals,” Rin sighs, which means that it was indeed the outfit that Takashi intended to first wear. “So, what’s the plan once your father arrives, Sasha?”
“We’ll get them to sit on the dining table together and then just tell them to have the dinner while Aunt Cara and Uncle Luka will bring us to dinner and then watch a movie,” you list out the itinerary, and Rin nods.
“Dinner and a movie, huh? This might actually be the most fun and memorable Valentine’s Day I’ve ever had yet,” they say quietly.
But before the conversation can continue even further, the doorbell rings out again and this time, you have a pretty good idea of who it is. Jumping down from the sofa, you quickly run to the door, ignoring Aunt Cara’s call to slow down. You open the door and there stands your father, looking very handsome wearing the suit you chose for him this morning.
“Dad!” you squeal out happily and he bends down as you tackle him into a hug. “You come early!”
He lifts you up in his arms as he chuckles, “Yeah. I left a bit early. I don’t want to be late for your dinner date.” He kisses your cheek and you giggle. As the two of you walk further into the apartment, you’re quickly met by the others. “Hey, Takashi,” your dad greets and you can hear him sounding a bit sheepish. You squirm and your dad sets you down.
“H—Hey, Vik. You… You look good,” Takashi stammers, eyes flitting about as if they can’t decide whether to stare at your dad or at the far wall. You notice Uncle Luka and Aunt Cara wearing shit-eating grins on their faces.
“You too, Takashi,” your dad replies.
Suddenly, Aunt Cara claps. “Well, that’s cute and all, but it’s time for the main event tonight! Luka, would you seat our guests as I go take the food?” She speaks in an exaggerated poshness before striding towards the kitchen.
Uncle Luka ushers—or more like pushes Takashi and your dad to the dining table, pulling out the chairs and telling them to sit down. Takashi, who’s still holding the flower awkwardly, sets it down on the table.
“Wait, what—” your dad starts but Uncle Luka pushes him by the shoulders down onto the chair before doing the same to Takashi just in time for Aunt Cara to arrive with two plates of hot meals in hand, setting them in front of them with a flourish.
“WAIT, wait,” your dad interjects. “I thought this is supposed to be Sasha’s and Rin’s dinner date?”
“Nope,” you tell your dad. “It has always been yours and Mr. Takashi’s, dad,” you say as you hug him from the side and he rubs your back gently. “We can see that the two of you love each other, and we want both of you to be happy.”
Your dad smiles softly as he looks down at you fondly. “Thank you, kiddo. I appreciate it,” he says.
“Also, I made you and Mr. Takashi a Valentine’s Day card! I hope you like it!” you exclaim cheerfully.
Suddenly, Uncle Luka takes hold of your shoulder. “Alright, let’s go kids,” he says in a weird sense of urgency. “Let’s let them enjoy their dinner date.”
“Where are you guys going?” your dad asks.
“We’ll have dinner and then go watch a movie,” Uncle Luka replies as he continues walking with you and the others toward the front door.
“Hey! No horror, violent, or gory movies, alright?” you hear your dad call out.
“Got it!” Uncle Luka replies back as he opens the front door and all of you pour out into the hallway, making your way to the elevators.
Viktor’s POV
You sigh as you hear the front door close. You can’t believe those four are all in cahoots to arrange you this romantic dinner date with your own boyfriend. Makes you wonder whose idea this is. It honestly wouldn’t surprise you if it’s Sasha’s. That kid is seriously smarter than either you or Luka when the two of you were their age and you’re totally not biased at all.
Takashi reaches for the bottle of wine and inspects the label before grabbing the corkscrew and opening it. “Luka must’ve been the one who bought this,” he mutters as he pours you a glass before moving to his own.
“Maybe we should’ve told them sooner that we’ve been dating for almost a month now,” you chuckle, taking the glass in your hand and sipping on the red wine. Yup, definitely expensive.
“Well, we’re trying to find the right time and the right way. It seems they’ve found it for us,” Takashi laughs as he sits back down. “Ooh, these are some well-cooked steaks. I suppose Cara was the one who made them.”
“Undoubtedly. If it were Luka, we’d be eating charcoal right now,” you grin. A card was folded near the centre of the table and you can instantly recognize your baby’s handwriting on it.
You reach for it and admire the cover in all its glittery glory. It makes you smile seeing the cute handwriting. You can practically feel the meticulous care that Sasha put into this and it warms your heart, truly. You don’t know what you’ve done to deserve such a cute child.
Opening the card, you read the message inside. Instantly, your smile falls as your eyes scan the words. “Are you a horse? Because I can ride you all night.” There’s only one explanation for this… “Luka…” you growl lowly.
“What’s wrong?” Takashi asks and you hand him the card. He reads it and his cheeks immediately blush. “Uh… Yeah, definitely him.”
Meanwhile…
It seems like the restaurant that Uncle Luka has in mind when he talks about having steaks for dinner is some fancy, fine-dining restaurant. It’s not really your first time eating at one, but right now, you feel a bit underdressed. Out of the five of you, only Uncle Luka and Rin wear neat enough clothes to kinda blend in with the other guests.
You’re not really sure how Uncle Luka pulls it, but the five of you end up being seated at a pretty big table facing a pretty view of the city. All of you are browsing the menu when Uncle Luka suddenly sneezes pretty hard.
“Bless you, Uncle Luka!” you say to him.
“Ugh… Thanks, kiddo,” he groans before muttering, “I feel like someone’s talking about me somewhere.”
“So, what movie are we going to watch later?” Ash asks.
“Uh, not sure. I gotta check the tickets and I left them in the car. But, I’m pretty sure it’s one of those colorful animated movies.”
“Aww, I kinda want to watch one of those thriller movies…” you say.
“Sasha,” Aunt Cara admonishes you. “You hear your dad, right? Do you want to disappoint him on this special day?”
You quickly shake your head and send her an apologetic smile before turning to Rin. “Hey, Rin. What are you ordering? I don’t really know a lot of this food on the menu.”
“Oh, I think I’ll order this one,” they say as they point at a meal. “But, this one also looks good, though…”
And soon the table is lively with conversations both between Uncle Luka and Aunt Cara and between you, Rin, and Ash. But inside, you hope your dad’s dinner date is going well. Maybe you’ll get home to some good news later on. Hopefully. But either way, you know this will be an unforgettable day for all involved—especially you.
