"Relax, kids; I've got a GUT FEELING Uter is around here somewhere. After all, isn't there a little Uter in all of us? In fact, you might even say we just ATE UTER and he's in our stomachs right now! Wait—scratch that one." - Seymour Skinner

It's time once again to bask in the warm, glowing, warming glow of yet another Simpsons Halloween special—and, quite possibly, the funniest one to date. On this fifth installment, Homer becomes an axe-wielding, family slaying psychopath, the family gets trapped in a dystopian society lorded over by Ned Flanders, and Bart and Lisa risk being gooified by their hungry teachers. And if that's not enough, it all culminates with a show-stopping, inside-out dance number!

Fantastic episode that's definitely my favourite of all the Treehouse of Horrors. As with a lot of early Simpsons, it had an indelible impression on me. Similar to Henry, I also used to use the "This. Is My Voice. On TeeVeee" Homer line when testing audio (but in a job where I was tech support for classrooms at a university). I ALSO have a Simpsons tattoo based on Homer's face that scares himself, to commemorate both my love of the Simpsons AND surviving a prolonged lockdown that would have surely driven most people insane (I got it in 2010). If anyone is curious, here it is https://i.imgur.com/jq2qzb5.jpeg (and a couple more https://imgur.com/a/pMx4HBf).

Man that cut “Twins” joke from the first segment feels like it was ripped right out of the opening of a Critic episode.

Tale from the Tape: My parents taped this episode over a rerun and it left a prominent artifact on the opening oscilloscope sequence where you can see the entirety of Bart skateboarding out of the school before fading away.

Like Bob said; I too only see shoe shiners at airports. But I also see them at my state’s Capitol Hill/underground connected corridors.

Dan’s shouting “TWO” as willy while jumping into the dance number is imprinted on my brain. Having to communicate to the audience that he is Willy, not Homer, while also shouting AND singing in a single word is insane to me. Probably my favorite single word delivery in the series.

Wow, that was Willie? I always thought it was Grandpa dancing with the family.

Ian Stratton

Definitely the pudgiest Willie's ever been.

My son is almost ten and he’s gotten way into the Simpsons which a real joy. I’m very grateful I get to enjoy with him and see his own little sense of humor forming. And of course I get to regale him with fun facts I learn on this podcast. All that to say, should he ever get married I will 100% be incorporating grandpa’s wedding advice during the toast.

How dare you assume I didn’t want to listen to that entire Chorus Line song.

I have seen A Sound of Thunder! I recently saw it while visiting my parents and knew nothing about it. It's very cheap looking and filmed primarily on green screen. Even simple outdoor shots of walking on the street are CG, which is really weird. It's almost like they wanted to do a Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow thing but couldn't pull it off. I have not read the story so can't comment on how effective Bradbury's writing is, but the film is somewhat enjoyable as a bad movie.

The “fog that turns people inside out” is up there with Bart mentally melting Homer’s face in “Brother from the same planet” as moments that traumatized me as a kid and that I still can’t quite look at.

Joe Hodgson

I'm still salty Super7 gave us inside out Bart but no one else from the family. Actually, let's just say I'm salty about the whole Super7 experience where The Simpsons are concerned.

Ohmygod Scotchgard I've been stupid for 31 years Edit: Who am I fooling I remain stupid

One specific reason this episode is close to my heart is because, as a graduation gift, my parents gave me a Simpsons bottle opener that plays the dialogue from the Marge & Homer “no beer and no TV” scene whenever it's used. I've had it for multiple decades now, and it still works! Also, as someone who has been watching episodes of the original Outer Limits in the last few years, I can say that it's actually really good! I would argue that the most famous episode of the show is not “I, Robot” (which is surprisingly not based on anything from the Isaac Asimov book of the same name), but either of the two Harlan Ellison-written episodes, “Demon With a Glass Hand” and “Soldier”, the latter being the one that Ellison accused James Cameron of ripping off to make The Terminator (it also stars Michael Ansara, the voice of Mr. Freeze on Batman: The Animated Series.)

As far as TV Stephen King adaptations go, The Langoliers is pretty infamous due to its awfulness. However, a few years ago, a Greek filmmaker edited together a new version called The Timekeepers of Eternity and it's pretty excellent. He printed out the entire movie on xerox paper and kind of created a sort of stop motion paper nightmare over the original series and cut it down from 4 hours to 60 minutes. I can’t stop thinking about the John Denver hedge maze song

When Henry jokingly says that Chorus Line is the best musical directed by an actor from Jurassic Park, even with that caveat it’s probably not true. For my money, Oh! What A Lovely War!, also directed by Attenborough, is a better musical

I always thought that the first non Brazilian time traveler joke was a reference to aviation pioneer Alberto Santos-Dumont who some believe should be credited as the first person to fly an airplane.

Hootin' Zoots! One of the Twitch streamers I watch on the regular has a redeem where we'll stop and read through an old comic book, either something British (this streamer's the same one responsible for the modern-day resurgence of Biffo the Bear on BlueSky) or one of Archie's also-ran titles from the '40s & '50s. A regular appearance in the pages of the Super Ducks, Susies, and Katy Keenes of the latter category was Captain Tootsie, a burly blonde Captain Marvel lookalike who would appear for a page-long adventure every month. He and his cadre of child cohorts would inevitably witness some horrible, potentially lethal mishap befalling some poor dope and quickly consume a Tootsie Roll, a square of Tootsie Fudge, or some other Tootsie product loaded with delicious, nutritious dextrose for a burst of quick energy and save the day. "Quick energy" was literally used most of the advertisements, if I recall! Seems like the kind of shameless advertisement that'd stick with a Simpsons writer, delivered in a format they were probably rabid consumers of. (Good news, everyone- Captain Tootsie is apparently public domain! You can write your own stories of superheroics powered by the quick energy found in Tootsie products!)
