"Well, it wasn't a bad life. If only I could get back that time I spent watching TRON: Legacy." - Turanga Leela

Futurama delivers its own take on the madcap Mayan apocalypse of 2012 with a tale of prophesied disasters, stone rocketships, and Fry's chivalry nearly killing Leela. Listen in and learn the surprising truth about why this episode was given a title that in no way indicates its subject matter!

I found this episode weird because in the later seasons mars has returned as if it wasn't destroyed.

2026-09-17 03:00 Please please please keep shitting on Disenchantment. It just wanted to be Futurama so badly, but it just felt like they gave a series to its incidental characters, while costing a ton of money to produce something so bland. Not looking forwaed to the crossover, but I guess it had to happen, since Disenchantment’s biggest fan is Matt Groening.

I think the TDKR critique probably fits Iron Man better? Those films seem to lean in more on the “benevolent technocrat” narrative. The thesis of the Dark Knight Trilogy as I see it is that Batman is at best a “necessary evil” that only works if the hero is martyred before they inevitably become corrupted.

Hello guys, I found it funny in the last episode of talking Futurama you guys briefly spoke about being anti circumcision. "fun fact", there's a lot of anti circumcision science and talking points out there that are false. It's actually necessary for men's health and hygiene. I know a lot about this subject, because I got a circumcision procedure done 5 years ago after having many complications. Sometimes you can't pull back the foreskin. There's a thing called fomosis that can prevent cleaning properly and can lead to many infections and cancer and it's so bad that most men don't even know i can arm themselves and their sexual partners.

At least when Futurama is bad, it’s bad with characters I like.

Disenchantment gets better as it goes, but it's not a sitcom, it's a story where people die and have arcs and stuff. This allows the characters to have more depth and growth than a weekly show like futurama, but it does mean you have to watch the first two (mostly) mediocre seasons to really enjoy the payoff. Plus Freckles might be my favorite Dimaggio character.

Oddly enough the latest episode ("Ocean's Three") also features Revealo and a plot where Fry screws everything up by trying to do something romantic for Leela. I thought Revealo might be a reference to Valentino, a magician who faced enormous backlash when he did multiple specials on Fox where he revealed the secret behind many magic tricks.

The thing that I marvel at with this writing staff is not that they can come up with a story like this about a Mars/Earth apocalypse, and all the incredible elements that come together in it, but that they would kick the whole epic off by having Fry lose his lucky pants. Down a badger hole. Director Raymie Muzquiz and his assistant director, Aldin Baroza, got a string of incredibly complex shows in this group. They did a lot of great work figuring out how to visualize this stuff. And on a TV budget and schedule. I look back at an episode like this and am baffled as to how we got through it. This was one of the first episodes that used the new 3D crowds our team developed. We used to have to cut around to avoid showing too many crowd shots, but not anymore! As far as the process, we still hand draw all storyboards and designs, but everyone is working on a cintiq now. Designers work in photoshop and the storyboards are drawn in a program that keeps all the drawings in order and compiles the drawings and info like dialog and screens directions into a storyboard. Most overseas studios have switched to non-paper as well. I can’t believe we did this episode on paper. You guys are awesome. I really like listening to your histories and analysis of all things cartoon. About to dive into the Spiderverse episode. Thanks.
