"In America, we stopped using corporal punishment and things have never been better. The streets are safe, old people strut confidently through the darkest alleys, and the weak and nerdy are admired for their computer programming abilities!" - Homer Simpson

When a science experiment misfires, Bart finds himself on an all-expenses-paid trip Down Under to apologize to the Australian people. But when the government reveals he's in for the booting of a lifetime, the Simpson family realizes diplomacy is no simple game of knifey-spoony.

New Zealand is the Canada to Australia's America in that it doesn't matter that much if you mix up where something is from.

Everyone forgot to mention Australia’s latest and greatest import, Bluey!

Most of my experience with expensive long distance calls were my memories of my granny calling her younger sister in Northern Ireland in the 90s. It got pretty bad cost wise and my uncle had to set something up to reduce the costs. Too bad my granny didn't make it long enough for stuff like Skype where she could have video called my great aunt (like we did at various times up until her passing during the pandemic

One the best episodes . Any time (as a Brit) we can laugh at stupid Aussies and Yanks it’s always good 😀

I’ve been to South of the Border once. We drove by it several times thinking it looked like the coolest place. We finally decided to stop while on a trip with my parents. We ate at the “Mexican” restaurant where my dad tried to speak Spanish with the staff but none of them knew Spanish. I was mortified and had to explain to him that this place was not authentic and built by white people. The only good part of South of the Border is that they sell every kind of firework year-a-round.

Both places Brits colonised, so if we're stupid, you lot are at least partly to blame. Enjoy your spotted dick and not rinsing your dishes

Can't let a "don't tread on me" mention go by without a — Fuck Colin!

It's interesting that the anime adaptation of Powerpuff girls was so much better than the remake. It's a similar story with the Stitch anime from 2016 and the Lilo and Stitch reboot from a few years ago where I cannot get over the fact that they changed the ending to have Lilo be given to the state like it's a good thing

I listened to the 2017 episode before this one and in both cases Henry said Young Frankenstein instead of Young Einstein but this time Chris wasn't around to correct him.

Incredible guest this episode, an all-timer!

Growing up in Australia at the time - The Simpsons was huge. We didn't really have cable in the early 90's (not until Murdok's Foxtel came along) but we had Channels 1, 2, 7, 9 and 10. 7 and 9 had the 6:00 news, but 10 had 5:00 news, so they had the Simpsons on at 6. So the only real option that wasn't the news was Simpsons, so every kid watched it. We also got Simpsons Tazos (Pogs that came in Chip packets), and apparently a whole trading card set dedicated to the episode: https://www.tradercracks.com/1996-tempo-simpsons-down-under-trading-cards-checklist

I remember seeing the "30 years of Electricity" gag on the postage stamp, it truly made my comedy brain grow.

“ New Zealand? Our beautiful cousins” Does he know about Shelbyville?

Thanks to early 90s cable TV, I have seen Young Einstein -and- Reckless Kelly. To refresh your memory Henry, the movie is about an Australian version of Albert Einstein who comes up with E=MC2 trying to put "bubbles into beer." He then travels to Europe and invents rock and roll while turning his violin into an electric guitar. The films antagonist steals his idea and is going to present his new beer making device to the public, but it's functionally an atom bomb, which Albert must use his electric guitar to siphon the excess energy off of to save everyone. Absolutely ridiculous, but the fun kind.

In the 90s, my nana went on a trip to Australia and brought back souvenirs for all the grandkids. That meant myself and most of the boys got a real, wooden, boomerang. Boy was I bummed when I went outside and threw it only to find out that it did not behave like it did in cartoons or video games. It was probably intended to be more of an ornamental thing anyway and I managed to ping the side of our gas grill putting a nice, splintery, dent in it. I have to say, out of all the toys I received as a kid, boomerangs and pogo sticks ended up being the most unlike the version I saw on television and also the least fun by comparison.

I have nowhere super relevant to comment this, but have you guys seen this 35mm scan of the short Family Therapy that appeared this week? Had no idea any of the Ullman shorts were shown in theaters, and I’ve never seen one of em look this good! Here’s the high res scan: https://youtu.be/LwKdq4OiyqA?is=OkmyI65_4sOEh96W

Fun Fact about Madonna's song Take a Bow, the reason the music video had the bullfighter aesthetic was because of the then upcoming adaptive of Evita. Madonna lobbied like crazy to get the role in that movie including some extensive Vocal training that she would use in her next album Ray of Light. Also on a previous episode (around beginning of Season 2) Madonna's 1992 album Erotica came up and honestly despite the controversy with the title song it's a good Madonna album, and if you had to listen to one song from that album, I'd recommend Deeper & Deeper. It's a spiritual sequel to Madonna's 1990 hit Vogue, it's absolutely gay as fuck and worth the listen.

Sorry if i missed it, but last time you guys covered this episode there was discussion about whether Conover’s (sp?) voice was originally another VA/guest with Hartman being brought in as the “fixer”. Did you feel the same way watching it this time?
