In the mid-80s, when no acclaimed film director would deign to enter the world of broadcast television, Steven Spielberg used his immense clout to create Amazing Stories. This big-budget anthology show mostly underwhelmed viewers during its two seasons, but its one animated experiment remains the series' greatest achievement. The brainchild of Brad Bird, "Family Dog" brought theatrical-level animation to the small screen in a particularly dire era for the medium, and presaged creations like The Simpsons—which Bird would later work on. This month on What A Cartoon, join us as we examine this highly influential piece of late '80s animation and desperately try to forget the one-season disaster it spawned many years later.

The first part of this cartoon feels like the dog version of Uncut Gems. It's just a constant barrage of unpleasantness and stress. I have no idea how a show about emotionally abusing a dog would play today let alone in 1993 when shows like Home Improvement and Full House were dominating the primetime ratings.

Love your theory that when characters in this show die, they go to Halloween Town

I loved watching Secrets of the Cryptkeeper’s Haunted House. It was among a group of shows I vividly remember watching as a kid that seemed to disappear into thin air; other shows like Sam and Max: Freelance Police, Road Rovers, and Project Geeker.

Great episode and also bonus points for Bob saying “Family Dawg” like Blue Haired Lawyer right at the top. Giving the people what they want.

Great episode! I love discovering important animation history trough this podcast. Also I really want family dog to snap and bite that little kids arm off.

According to David Koenigsberg, the requested retakes for the Family Dog series came so late that Wang studios had already scrapped all the production materials and they were having to recreate animation and backgrounds by rotoscoping workprints of the episodes they had considered finished. Koenigsberg was a producer on the original Amazing Stories episode but had refused to work on the series for the same reasons Brad Bird did. I'm not sure how it worked exactly but there were definitely different tiers of staff at Wang, so the quality of TV show episodes attributed simply to Wang Film Productions can vary massively. I think their "A" crew was primarily people who had worked on the Brave Little Toaster feature. The Ren and Stimpy episode Egg Yolkeo was shipped to Wang after Nickelodeon had been impressed by their work on Lair of the Lummox, but while their top artists did work on Lummox, Yolkeo went to a subpar team. This may well have been an issue on the Family Dog TV show too.

Great podcast for the history of all this. But hoo boy, I'm sure glad The Simpsons didn't go in this Family Dog direction for their cartoon family. I can only take so much yelling, whining, and bickering. I'm going to head canon that the poor dog leaves them afterward and gets adopted by a nice family.

I got a plushy of Family Dog for XMas as a kid. I watched the 1993 show version. I have no memory of the show only that I liked it and I was happy to get the plushy.

Anyone who's fed off the teat of the Nine Old Men/CalArts seems to need to do some pantomime/frustration comedy, and as you rightly point out, none of it's funny. It's purely masturbatory to impress other animators. The Family Dog pilot *is* technically an example, but *of course* it has so much more to offer since it eventually became The Simpsons. I'm sympathetic to the series more, not because it's good (it's not), but because by that point Spielberg *knew* what the overseas TV pipeline was and should have known better. With Tiny Toons, he completely threw out the first bunch of episodes that came in for being substandard. So by the time Family Dog went to series, he should have known what to expect. Hell, he did this all over again with the abysmal Animaniacs reboot—a bunch of THOSE had to be completely redone because they weren't "cinematic" enough. Although in that case, I think Spielberg was ignorant of the fact that the industry had seen a hard reset from the original WBA heyday and is once again making ugly, stiff cartoons en masse.

As a five year old seeing Family Dog in front of "The Land Before Time" my reaction was "what he heck is this? This isn't the movie I came to see. Wow this is boring." As an adult watching it again, probably for the first time since, my reaction is "what the heck is this? why would anyone spend this much money animating boring, mean characters?" Yeah, the animation is nice, and wow the Tim Burton designs are so "Tim Burton" I can see why no one thought to credit Brad Bird. But I cannot for the life of me understand why they thought this would make for good TV.

The crooks strike me as Tim Burton's take on Horace and Jasper from One-Hundred and One Dalmatians. It's easy to see how this okay pilot would fail as a series. Eight minute shorts of this dog in a Courage the Cowardly Dog sort of format could have worked, but 22 minutes of dog abuse is too much. Especially if he doesn't win out in the end.

I’m old enough to remember watching it when it was originally aired. I think everyone in my family found it unpleasant. Nearly 30 minutes of awful people torturing a small dog. Sorry Brad Bird. For the rest of Amazing Stories the only episode that stands out in my memory was Head of the Class featuring Christopher Lloyd as a psychotic English teacher. Probably the first time in my life I was exposed to any kind of dark humor. The final scene still haunts/amuses me even though I haven’t seen it again in probably 30 years.

Hollywood Dog vs. Family Dog — place your bets!

Kaelan Ramos

For the last season of The Simpsons I want an episode where Family Dog meets Hollywood Dog. Let's wrap up these loose ends.

Is there ever going to be a Retronauts episode about the Family Dog game for SNES?
