We're meeting you filthy hippies halfway with a podcast episode about a terrifying topic: politics! This show about the future takes us on a whimsical trip back to 1999 where it's the end of history, every problem has basically been solved, and no American President could possibly worse than Richard Nixon. It's a fun ride through the political mindset of the end of the millennium, made less depressing via plenty of jokes about Nixon's head snarling in a jar like a werewolf. Book your next trip to the Clinton Monument and get ready for another great episode!

So, it’s only been about a decade since I had this course, but the American history class I took in High School got a lot farther than I expected it to, as I had heard the same issue from countless others that the 50’s was roughly the stopping point. The one I had, however, hit really hard on the 20th century, and we just kept on going through American history until around the time Clinton got elected. We got into Vietnam, the Civil Rights Movement, and of course everyone’s favorite, Reaganomics. Strangely, I remember we spent a lot of time on pop culture from the 20’s to the 40’s. We talked about Rudolph Valentino in “The Sheik” and the teacher played Der Führer’s Face for everyone (which I knew at the time from the Donald Duck short of the same name). As far as this episode goes, I don’t know why but I had memory of a completely different joke in place of John Quincy Adding Machine. I was anticipating them mentioning a resurrected Abe Lincoln that commuted evil acts, and was surprised when that wasn’t the joke. I’ve looked into it and the closest I can come up with is a joke in a later episode of Futurama regarding an evil Abe Lincoln spawning from a Holodeck. That may be where I’m pulling this, but it’s so specific in my head I doubt it. Oh well, I guess this is just a case of trying to rewrite history in my head

oooooh an unedited gaff. that was like finding a french fry in my order of onion rings. a pleasant surprise

In fairness to Leela being not harsh enough to Nixon, from her point in history it'd be like you or me being really mad about Charlemagne.

There was a small editing error in this episode that's now been fixed, so please re-download the episode if you haven't listened yet! Thanks for your understanding! - Bob

The secret to a good Nixon is letting your lower jaw go slack a little bit during the "aroos." When you shake your head a little bit during the "aroo" you get that jowly Nixon that Billy West loves so much. It comes from the back of the mouth, you kind of direct some of the air into your cheeks while talking. Not quite throaty, but if you practice it enough you can get it!

Great episode guys, and we all know 90 year old ex-President Bernie would 100% be on a picket line, continuing to fight whatever capital interest he couldn't topple ☭.

I think I'm about the same age as you fine folks, but here in New England high school US history more or less went up to the 80s with a dabble in Bush/Clinton. We got to cover all of your major wars and conflicts and if you wanted to supplement your history you could take electives on specific ones, which sounds terrible to me but to each their own. To me, this episode is basically where Bender becomes fully-formed. He busts out and really establishes just how mean and selfish he can be. It's strangely endearing. I love how jam-packed the jokes are too. That Ford line about not seeing much use in voting is a great example since he's, of course, the only man to make it to the presidency without being voted into the White House.

A bit of a continuity error is if the world is run by some world organization, and not the US, then presumably the US constitution wouldn't be the foundational document. Even if it was the constitution obviously only applies to the US President, and because Nixon was running to be the World's President, it is likely that his two terms as POTUS would be treated like we treat a two-term governor running for POTUS.

When you guys mentioned how Bender's line, "Compare your lives to mine and then kill yourselves!" would get you banned from Twitter now, it reminded me that there actually was a Twitter controversy surrounding this line in 2013 when popular asshole Phil Fish quoted it to the host of a Gametrailers podcast he was appearing on in the midst of his Fez 2 cancelling public breakdown. I believe he defended himself by pointing out that it was a quote, as if telling someone to kill themself-and meaning it- is acceptable if you say it the same way a cartoon robot did.

This episode coming out around the time of all these political scandals involving the President of Microsoft has me thinking. We need to give a name to these scandals! Involving these dollar bills! We'll call these scandals... Bill Gates.

I was hoping someone else would have already made this correction. Oh well, Long Dong Silver is also a real porn star not a fictional one. From his Wikipedia entry, “Long Dong Silver is a retired porn star known for his eponymously large penis, as well as being mentioned by name during the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings.”

This episode is AWESOME, even with its kinda naive 90s politics as you guys discussed. So many of the Nixon line reads had me rewinding and watching them over and over, especially the whole scene in his dressing room. -- This isn't unique to this episode, but it had never occurred to me until now: I love in the future they're allowed to have a literal monster man as the male news anchor but STILL have to put a generic pretty blonde in the woman's spot.

I got to the Talking Screensavers episodes. Two words that will age all of us immediately: Johnny Castaway.

I remember hearing the moral of Time Enough At Last was supposed to be don't be antisocial but no-one got it cause he's the most sympathetic character. Why would he be social when everyone is such an asshole?

Thad Komorowski

If you take the trouble to look, there are a lot... a LOT of conservative porn stars. Even gay ones. Not sure what's in the water... did I say water? I meant cum. But I guess when you love to get fucked, why not let your voting record show it, too...

Rhomega

In regards to Time Enough At Last, he does find a gun, and almost commits suicide until he finds the library. So it's really not far away from where he broke his glasses.
