This week on the podcast, we start our new tradition of once a month returning to a cartoon we had previously covered, starting with this iconic episode of Batman: The Animated Series! All the coolest villains come together for a game of poker to tell their favorite stories of almost getting Batman, but there's more twists than it seems at first. So grab your favorite rock and throw it as you listen to this week's podcast!

I have a villain name for Bob, "The Avian"...... I'll see myself out.

Ultimate Spider-Man is all right. It leans too hard into the style of humor that early Teen Titans was big on (hope you like chibi Spider Man making yet another fourth wall aside) for my tastes, but it's got some decent ideas (an episode that paints Deadpool as the crazy/dangerous type that any sane person in that universe should as opposed to just Captain Wacky, a legitimately creepy and menacing version of Doc Ock voiced by Tom Kenny of all people, and as far as I can tell it's the only animated incarnation of Spider Man to involve Agent Venom). Not exactly rush-out-and-watch stuff but definitely something to consider doing a WaC on.

If you want to spy Paul Dini in this show, he was also inserted into "Beware the Grey Ghost" where he voiced the video store clerk who was drawn to resemble him. He was also drawn into a much later episode from The New Batman Adventures as a potential new Harley in "Joker's Millions." On Tim Curry, I think Bob is thinking of a YouTube video from a few years ago claiming to have audio of Curry and re-dubbed a scene from this show, but it was just audio from Curry's performance in the film It. I suppose it wouldn't be a surprise if we found out his Joker would have just sounded like Pennywise, though I've never heard anyone who would have heard it confirm that. Dong Yang very much feels like the show's second choice when it came time to assign episodes to animation studios, but it's pretty rewarding to watch the shows handled by this studio improve throughout the life of the series. Dong Yang would end up getting most of the episodes for production season two as well as The New Batman Adventures. The worst studio may have been Akom, who got fired after one disastrous episode in Joker's Wild. Their production was more on par with standard kid shows with animation goofs and mis-colored parts. Bob and Henry will get to talk about them in greater detail with next week's episode as they did Bucky O'Hare as well as most of X-Men. This particular episode is so great. It's one of those that just sticks with you, even when you're first seeing it as an 8 year old in part thanks to the twist and the rock line. I think I love it even more as an adult because of a lot the little details and flourishes attributed to the villains that Bob and Henry both point out. It's also really cool that the studio didn't view this as an opportunity to save a buck and essentially create a clip show with an added framing device instead giving us all new tales to enjoy. It's impressive they were able to pack so much into this without it feeling overstuffed. Definitely one of my favorites from this show.

I think this became my favorite episode of the entire series when it first dawned on me that everything Killer Croc says is Batman deliberately seeing how stupid he can play the role and get away with it. Plus it's fun to just see the villains hanging out - I'm a sucker for slice of life tidbits in what are otherwise action shows.

How did you talk about Harley Quinn's recent popularity without mentioning her new show?! Streaming on DC universe and presumably HBO max eventually. Hopefully you cover it before the year is out!

Thank you guys for talking about my favorite cartoon. (The Simpsons is my second favorite) As a youngster, watching Batman the Animated Series and The Simpsons madd my day a little brighter after a bad day of school. As a huge Batman Stan, I always said Batman had the best rogues lineup and this episode featured some of his greatest rogues. Such a great episode.

Gayest Episode Ever

This was great! And I am not a correctapotamus so much as someone who cares too much about Arleen Sorkin, but the Fraiser thing is that Kelsey Grammer was never talking to the celebs who called in. Every call he got actually had him talking to Arleen, and then they'd dub over her voice with the celeb saying the same lines. Which means she is kinda a bigger part of that whole series, just not on-camera. She actually gets to appear in person in the series finale, which is also sweet.

I wouldn't mind if WAC focused on the DCAU to completion.

Why not “Mr.Macaw”? Cuz it’s close to Bob’s last name of Mackey

Would love a WAC on the Batman Beyond Mr. Freeze episode.

Awesome episode! Loved the first BTAS episode of What a Cartoon so returning to it now was super fun, especially with an episode dealing with a lot of different villains. An interesting tidbid I recently learned was that after Batman & Mr Freeze: Subzero, they were originally planning to do a third BTAS-style movie called "Batman: Arkham" that would again feature Robin, but they abandoned that in favour of Return of the Joker. It would've been cool to see Arkham, but it's hard to argue with the result given how great ROTJ is. -- I'd definitely like to see you guys tackle the other DCAU shows down the line, especially now that Batman Beyond is out on Blu-Ray. Personally, for that one I think it'd be cool to talk about one of the episodes featuring either an entirely new villain (like Shriek of Spellbinder), or one of the DC villains we didn't see in BTAS but got adapted here first (like The Royal Flush Gang).

I would love a Batman it DC Animated universe mini series. Y’all could just focus on the original or do a sampler platter and I would be there

WAC: "Here you go, Talking Simpsons Patrons. This'll be a Batman: The Animated Series episode." Me: "Batman: The Animated Series?! Again?! ... Well, this better be the most enjoyable podcast in the world." *listens* Me: "... you got lucky."
