Re: Smithers' color in "No Disgrace Like Home", this was another episode that was heavily overhauled - and that hammer to revise came down a lot earlier in its production than "Some Enchanted Evening" was. So the change could be made easily, by comparison.

"Blue Cat Blues" is the Tom & Jerry cartoon. I don't believe there was one with Donald attempting suicide over Daisy (he does it in "The Old Army Game" when he thinks he's lost the bottom half of his body), but there's a shot of Daisy with a gun to her head from "Donald's Dilemma" that's been memed.

Annnd, I've got to say you went pretty easy on how bad this episode looks. Way worse than anything in the rejected first version of "Some Enchanted Evening", which had bad stuff but was mostly just down to miscommunication. That scene of Marge and the kids with no lipsynch... the final shot of the crowd pan... This is just raw incompetence. Maybe the other episodes were so much of a shitbed that the glaring flaws of this lame (but canonically important) episode had to be passed over? Poor Wes Archer...

literally right after being told not to stick arms out the window, every kid and EVEN OTTO has his arm out the window! what a rebel haha

You guys were pondering what a Starscream Burns would sound like and I immediately thought about The Simpsons Arcade "welcum ta mah wurld" and if it was anything like that we dodged a bullet!

Either Henry counted wrong or his set is incomplete! There are 50 Simpsons POGs!! I collected them all in grade school (I even won the Bart one by actually playing for it) and I still have them to this day.

I know your guest mixed up Indica (body high) and Sativa (head high), but at the same time it would be so like Otto to make that same mistake.

Regarding the Juvie field trip, you can't say Bob didn't learn anything. Didn't Bob learn how to make someone question every decision they've made? That seems like a valuable life lesson

This episode really is all over the place, both in terms of animation and writing. I guess they were still committed to subverting sitcom tropes so they didn't want to provide a "typical" arc for Homer going through this suicidal depression funk, but it ends up coming from left field, and then having a VERY cheesy ending anyway, as you guys rightfully point out. It is super cool to see how well-formed Burns is from his first written appearance though.

yeah I've never seen any proof Christopher Collins actually voiced Burns on the air.

When I read an article in 1989 that announced the premier of the Simpsons and said Homer would be working at a nuclear power plant, I laughed outloud, knowing it was a perfectly dark funny job for him. For those growing up in the 70s and 80s nuclear power was always something that made us nervous. One of my earliest memories about the TV news were the various reports about 3 Mile Island in 1979 which was about 30 miles away. Flash forward to the late 80s, we had moved and nearby was another nuclear plant with a reputation for safety problems. When I was 14 or so we went on one those tours and they showed us a propaganda short pretty similar to Smiling Joe Fission. Afterward I asked the tour guide, who was boasting about how clean nuclear power was, some pointed questions about how clean it would really be if there was a serious accident. He tried to reassure us that an accident was very very unlikely. When I tried to say it could still happen and if it did the environmental damage would be pretty bad, he stopped calling on me and moved the tour along.
