Oh this is gonna be interesting. I’ve got a complicated history with The Animatrix, so I’m eager to hear your thoughts

I easily had not seen this movie for 15 years before revisiting it this month for the podcast. While some of the segments are a little weak, I still think this is GREAT overall. -- The Second Renaissance two-parter in particular was a very interesting exploration of the backstory of this universe, and upon some reflection, helped me make some more sense of the end of Matrix Revolutions, frankly. I always wondered why the machines would just honor their deal to back off from humanity once Neo gets rid of Agent Smith. But given their history, that all they wanted was to be treated like people, it makes sense that when someone so important to humanity would be willing to do so, that they would listen. And frankly, the turn of events leading to the machines enslaving humanity in this is all too plausible - if their inbuilt bias doesn't just have them become bigoted from the get go given how some AI has acted so far.

I don’t get why the humans don’t use EMP technology to destroy the robots during the Renaissance. If they don’t have EMP tech when they can create AI and totally badass mechs, how do they manage it later when they’re in caves clinging onto lates 90s rave culture?

I was in peak Matrix fanboy mode at this time, and I did love the Second Renaissance episodes as well as Beyond, Program, and World Record. Lord of the Rings kinda stole my love after the disappointment of Revolutions (with Return of the King coming out the following month) As a note, in your World Record section, he would have been running the 100 meter sprint, I believe? That's the standard in athletics/olympics. With the World Record being 9:58 by Usain Bolt. Though I didn't know they still do the occasional 100 yard dash, which was something that I learnt. Based on the 10 second split times of that 9:58 World Record, Bolt would have run under 9 seconds in a 100 Yard Dash.

So far I've only seen the first Matrix movie, and it was... fine? Honestly I think the Wachowski sisters' later films like Speed Racer and Cloud Atlas were both more entertaining and more interesting. But with that said, I'll still probably check out the Animatrix at some point down the road.

I'm still listening to this, and the content has been great so far. However, I do have a minor complaint. I know that being four hours long will result in a large file size, but the encoded bitrate (something like an effective 86kbps VBR) is pretty low, and lower than the Iron Giant's 96kbps effective rate. That extra ten kbps between this and the Iron Giant one made the compression artifacts even more noticeable. On a long listening session, artifacts make it more fatiguing to listen to the show. Since WAC movie pods are Patreon only, can they have at least a 128kbps effective rate?

I knew that the Matrix as a whole was rife with Alice in Wonderland allusions, but it wasn’t until I listened to this podcast that I understood how often they can dive into it. Even Ash’s cat’s name is Dinah, the name of Alice’s cat. Perhaps they tried a little too hard to hammer that home
