Another brand new month on the Talking Simpsons Network, and as before, we've got our monthly poll to pick the next subject of our premium podcast, What A Cartoon Movie! Each month we record a fresh, extra-long podcast about an animated film, and then release it for our $10 Patreon subscribers. And when we open up the voting, we want to let all the $5 folks have a chance to be heard as well so they can help pick episodes they might enjoy down the line. And as noted in our recent updated schedule, an extended preview of this movie podcast will now be our last What A Cartoon! episode released each month in the regular feed!

For February 2020, we wanted to do more Disney classics, but from a very specific era of the company: The 1980s! It was a tumultuous time for the house of mouse, and one of four great candidates from that decade for our next What A Cartoon Movie!

The Black Cauldron, the 1985 film that went through HUGE changes in production and threatened to end Disney feature animation forever!

The Great Mouse Detective, the 1986 adaptation of Basil of Bleaker Street that helped restart the anemic theatrical branch!

Oliver & Company, nothing screams "1988" more than Dickens meets Billy Joel!

The Little Mermaid, the modern classic that starts the Disney Renaissance and closed out the '80s with a promise of the company's biggest decade ever!

So please, make your voices heard before February 8,  and let your voices be heard! Thanks as always for your amazing support, and here's to another great month of podcast fun!

Oh God I can't decide!

Paul Serna

Black Cauldron is such a wild story! The popularity of 80s teen fantasy novels leading to a misguided attempt at a dark and genuinely scary Disney movie.

Alex Irish

Looks like this will be one of those surprise polls!

Frank Grimes

Going w/ Black Cauldron...seems like it's one of the more overlooked disney animated films.

Merc-a-dude

Black Cauldron, because of all hub-bub surrounding it... really I just want more info on Disney dark ages.

Casey Jones' Podcast

Ugh, The Great Rat Detective is such a dud. I watched it fairly recently and it was grating after 20 minutes.

KaiserBeamz

Gotta always give it to Great Mouse Detective since it's in my top 5 of favorite Disney films. Shame it might take awhile for you guys to get around to Oliver & Company. I wanted to hear your thoughts about how Georgette has become somewhat of a queer icon.

Jose Rivera

I went with The Great Mouse Detective because it’s my sister’s favorite Disney movie.

Tyler The Destroyer

Holy shit! I want Black Cauldron to win soooo bad! I hate how everyone bashes this movie 😤 I loved it! Got me interested in fantasy and knights and the Middle Ages and stirred the “cauldron” you would say in my desire to be a history teacher lol

Joseph

I think Black Cauldron could make for a very interesting discussion. Also, it's currently streaming on Disney+ and they remastered it for 4K HDR, so at least it LOOKS better than it ever has before.

SomeBloke

I’d be fine with the other nominees but my need for four hours of intense analysis of The Black Cauldron is overpowering. It’s the Disney film that should not be and I love it for that.

slimesiren

Black Cauldron gets my vote. I'm so fascinated by it.

sugarwithfreedonuts

Going to go with Oliver & Company. Loved that movie as a kid, but haven't seen it in a while. Doesn't look like it's going to win tho lol.

littleterr0r

I'm surprised by all the picks for Black Cauldron. I don't think I've ever actually seen the movie but it seems the most interesting. I did however beat the Sierra game a long time ago.

Brian Silvers

Great Mouse Detective is a what I can only describe as Hard G kids movie. So much stuff that would not fly even a few years later. It’s the lesser of the mouse movies that year, but still great.

Paul Jansen

This one is tough. I’d love to hear Black Cauldron, Great Mouse Detective, and Oliver & Company. It appears the third option is a long shot, so I will go with the mouse. Little Mermaid seems like low hanging fruit, so it’s the one option I’m not amped on.

Adam Gaudry

This is a really tough choice! Never particularly liked The Little Mermaid, although I appreciate its place as representing Disney on the ascendant. Oliver and Company makes me feel nostalgic and, having read Oliver Twist, it would be interesting to hear Bob and Henry have to say about the source material and this adaptation. But that's not going to win the poll! Think I'll go O&C and watch the BC and the Mouse battle it out from the sidelines. I'm sure the episode will be great in any case

crystalhearts

To me I am fully Black Cauldron because it is such a mess

Curtis Bostick

Little Mermaid is the only one I have seen. Judging by the percentages here, I'm going to have to watch Black Cauldron

Frank Grimes

Damn, this poll is more exciting than the superbowl...neck to neck of TGMD vs TBC...tied at 34% as of sunday, 2/2

John-Charles Holmes

Folks, you gotta go Mouse on this one. There's so much history out there on Cauldron (end of era) and Mermaid (turning point) but so little on Mouse Detective which is that first production in the new Disney style, it's the only American choice!

Cody C.

The black cauldron unfortunately sucks so that is absolutely why it should be talked about

Mike Mariano

The Great Mouse Detective is definitely less than the sum of its parts but is still solid—I don't know if that makes for a good episode, though. I only know the Black Cauldron through a horrifying picture book I had as a child but that's the one I'm most curious about.

Pumpkinbob

Black Cauldron is the most interesting one to me for sure. It is so pivotal and always gets talked about in the most fleeting terms. It is a time when Katzenberg was in the editing room thinking he would “just splice in the extra footage” to shape the film more to his tastes. The others are better, even though they are on a budget, but TBC is the end of an era for sure.

Jose Rivera

Great Mouse Detective is so close!

To Boldly Joe... Moore

A vote for The Black Cauldron is a vote for pure, logical, chronological analysis! There's obviously an appetite for both films but if you do Mouse first then Cauldron will be glossed over and then, when they DO cover it in a year or so, Henry will be all "Well, like we said in our Great Mouse Detective review..." and you'll wish they did it in release order. ^_^ As a great man once said: "I am not a crackpot."

Mike Mariano

Argh another dead heat where my choice falls behind in the final hours!

Devin Hoffarth

Oh cool you're gonna do the Great Mouse Detective! First movie I saw in theaters! According to my parents.

Devin Hoffarth

Yup great you're gonna be doing a movie about a rat trying to take over a major world government through dishonest means right- oh no

Eli Hernandez

I’m hoping Oliver and company can pull off an upset.
