April is almost here on the Talking Simpsons Network, and we're shaking things up a little for the next subject of our premium podcast, As you may know, once a month we release the What A Cartoon Movie! podcast, an extra-long discussion about an animated film, exclusively for our $10 Patreon subscribers. And when we open up the voting, we want to let all the $5 folks have a chance to be heard as well so they can help pick episodes they might enjoy down the line. But now, in light of our recent updated schedule, we want to get the votes for the next one moving earlier than we had before!

Yes, going forward the polls for the What A Cartoon Movie! will begin in the last week of the month and end as the next month begins!

Why the change-up? By simply changing the poll start date to a week earlier, it gives us more time to plan and better prepare for the movie before the post date. And we appreciate your understanding with making our planning go smoother for future What A Cartoon Movie! episodes.

With that all settled, it's time for April 2020's choices, and wow, this is a great selection. Once more we return to the works of Hayao Miyazaki! Yes, we'll be doing one of the first four films directed by the co-founder of Studio Ghibli. But which one is up to you!

The range of Miyazaki films range from 1979 to 1988, and your four choices are:

The Castle of Cagliostro, the 1979 Lupin III film that was Miyazaki's directorial debut and an incredibly influential action film!

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, the first-ish Ghibli film that adapted Miyazaki's manga into a massive trailblazer of 1984!

Castle in the Sky, the 1986 movie aka Laputa that is the first true Ghibli film and still has some of the most intricate art in 2D animation history!

My Neighbor Totoro, the beloved all-ages classic from 1988 that is both achingly cute AND a fanciful tale of growing up!

So please, make your voices heard before the poll closes on the night of April 2! Thanks as always for your amazing support, and here's to another awesome month of podcasts!

Cagliostroooooooooo! That way we can cheat and get a Lupin history too 😁👍

NervousWrex

Tough call but I got to go with Lupin

crystalhearts

Oh, what a good selection! I'm Nausicaa all the way - the themes of hope and survival in the face of ecological collapse are more relevant than ever.

Adam Gaudry

In the mad hope that over time the guys will make their way through the entire Miyazaki and Ghibil catalogue, might as well start with the first film. Cagliostro!

Tashmon Dimps

Gonna go with Lupin since it’s the only one of these I’ve seen lol (plus my friends got me super into Lupin a little while ago, so more history would be nice!)

Jacob Sumpter

Aww Crap. Castle in the Sky is gonna lose

Tom Jacques

Nausicaa is my absolute favorite but any of these are good.

RoryDropkick

Gotta go with ol' Cliff Hanger. Millions! Trillions! It's counterfeit!

Randy Peterson

This is one of those cases where I MUST chime in. Cagliostro, all the way. Phenomenal film in a list of phenomenal films. Can not recommend enough.

KaiserBeamz

I chose Calgiostro because I love that movie and it certainly has nothing to do with the fact that I might have a video about it in the pipeline.

Ian

Yay first time getting to do a poll! This is a hard one, but I've gonna have to go with Castle. I'm confident that whichever one gets chosen, these will all get covered at some point in the future.

YggiDee

I went with Nausicaä because it's in a similar situation as Akira, where the wildly popular film is actually just the first third of a much longer, more elaborate manga. Also the "Warriors of the Wind" dub probably makes for an excellent source of discussion. (Check out the manga, folks! It may well be Miyazaki's magnum opus)

As this was posted I'm watching Spirited Away for the first time on the prodding of a friend so this poll couldn't be more timely. Based on what I've heard, I'm pulling for Totoro, but that doesn't seem likely at this point

Michael King

All wonderful choices, but I hope Cagliostro takes it. Lupin holds such an important and unique place in the anime industry, from Red Coat Lupin through to Woman Called Fujiko Mine and the Italy and France series. I know Henry and Bob will make the most of a deep dive on the subject.

Micah

The Sideburns takes it

Tyler The Destroyer

I always go with one I want the most but because I always choose the under dog (castle in the sky) I know it won’t win lol maybe next time lol

Thad Komorowski

We need a Lupin episode - "anime for those who don't like anime". While I love "Cagliostro" I'd love to see a WAC on the original, first series, one of the few truly and uniquely exciting experiences in animation history.

Travis T.

I've suddenly got a craving for a Lupin III jumping off point after seeing the new trailer. A WAC movie history would be such a pleasure in this hellworld.

PublickEye

There's no bad choice here, but I'd love to hear your takes on Cagliostro. Such a good action film in its own right, and has a tone and energy that I wish Miyazaki adopted more in his later work.

Kat Heagberg

Seriously. In this time of awful I could use more Totoro, but no bad choice.

Scotty Beverages

An anime film I’ve actually seen before is winning. Hell yeah.

RyoGeo

I’m gonna have to watch Cagliostro again. I watched it about a 2 decades ago, with a crap ton of pre-viewing hype, and actually got a little bored. Obviously, I have to give it another view else I be regarded as a Philistine (Catholic joke, for Bob’s benefit).

Jacob Sumpter

I just watched Cagliostro last night (the Netflix dubbed version) and have to say it fell a bit short of the others listed here. I was an avid Lupin watcher in the 2000s and Castle Cagliostro was a different flavor from what I was expecting. Don't get me wrong, there is lots to like and I enjoyed it as a whole, but I'm thinking a few who haven't watched in a while may have their nostalgic memories deflated

Galen Ryder

I'm going to throw my hat in for The Castle of Cagliostro, mostly because I think the history will be the most interesting.

Chris Rowland

Finally catching back up after a weird podcast moratorium. Can’t believe lupin won. Nausicaa is the best forever. I’m rereading the manga right now. It’s basically perfect.
