This week we welcome on Thad Komorowski of the Cartoon Logic podcast, as we dig into the messy production of Some Enchanted Evening! Originally conceived as the pilot, the first director was fired, and then it was heavily reanimated to serve as the season one finale. Learn all the dirty details on how much it changed, and even major changes from the first table read draft of the script, all in this week's final re-exploration of season one!

Hey guys, so I noticed some things this Episode I'm not sure if you did, but one of them being that plain 2 color background when Bart complains about the happy little elves the first time, also on the side of the VHS box you can see the words Raskin Bobbins printed on the side, and finally a while back a rewatched this episode and thought that the character design for Howard from Howard's Flowers looked like an early prototype for Wernstrom from Futurama. Also this episode was one of my absolute favorites as a kid, I loved seeing the season 1 episodes just because as a kid I could tell the style was different and it would always make me happy.

I did a replica of the Bart and Lisa screaming for my art class in high school in the early 2000s. I remember working really hard on it even tracking down The Simpsons font so I can put Bart and Lisa at the bottom of it. It was one of my proudest works because I was still oddly enough a Simpsons fan in high school when most people thought it was too kiddy. Unfortunately it is long gone. I forgot what happened to it.

Haha, I would watch that /Weezer video all the time with my Win 95 CD. Those effects haven't aged well with HD...you can defintely see it was green screened now

Adventures of Sonic is absurdist insanity that was a footstone for the dadaist art form that is YouTube Poop in the mid to late 2000s. It was schlock in 1993, sure, but its surprisingly amusing in 2020. Absolutely aged better than the Saturday morning thing They also deadass ripped off the comics!Infinity Gauntlet story but threw in time travel. Y'all are DOOMED once I get my hands on a premium patron spot. After Beast Wars and Danny Phantom. Anyway, congrats on kicking the Mel Gibson/season 11 can down the road all the way to June. I'm legitimately impressed. And you went three for thirteen on getting the exact 30th anniversary in season one, on the patreon anyway.

This episode is such a beautiful disaster. I love everything going on here: the wacky character designs, Gibbs stings, weird timing. I wouldn't want The Simpsons to always look (or sound) like this, but it's such a fun view and just the way this episode moves makes it the most interesting Season One episode, though in terms of overall quality I still think "Krusty Gets Busted" and "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" are the best of the first season. This one would just always mesmerize me when it came on in syndication when I was a kid. I didn't know much about how animated shows were created, but I did know what a pilot was and as a kid I assumed this one looked so off because it was the pilot. I didn't learn until much later in life how trying it was to get this episode to air. And while I'm a little disappointed that Penny Marshall never got to reprise her role as the Babysitter Bandit in another episode, I am at least comforted though that the oddball nature of Season One is at least forever immortalized in The Simpsons Arcade Game.

I haven’t watched this episode in years; I think this is the first time that I picked up on Botz deliberately insisting on carrying in her luggage herself when she arrives. I take it that this was so that no one would know about them being empty. Then when Homer carries them out to her car and comments on how heavy they are he is unaware that the luggage is full of the family’s possessions. It’s been a lot of fun revisiting season 1, but I’m also glad that now it’s time to load the t-shirt cannons and charge into season 11.

Talking Simpsons revisits season 2 when?

y2kpodcst

i think the pilot for family guy deserves a big apology cause this has almost the same problems this one does

With the benefit of hindsight about when this was supposed to air, I really can only see various bits in this episode as deliberate attempts to show off how "not for kids" it was. Theft, violence, sex, domestic dysfunction, relentless disparaging of the low quality of childrens' cartoons (maybe don't throw that particular stone while building a glass house), it's like they just kind of ran down a checklist. Lots of what this podcast has trained me to recognize as Season 1 style overwriting on subtle jokes, as well. Just a rough watch. Fascinating, but rough.

This was so great! I love when Thad is on the show. Before the world stopped one of my favorite things was to go to classic cartoon showings and discussions, and listening to the three of you discuss animation definitely helps fill the void. (I’ve also been loving the Cartoon Logic podcast.)

I've been fascinated by the behind the scenes of Some Enchanted Evening for ages, which is certainly more interesting than the actual episode. (Gabor Csupo was not unreasonable when he described the script as 'shit'. Sam Simon also described his own writing in non-flattering terms when he spoke about it in his Hollywood TV legend interview). There was a post on the No Homers forum years ago from a Simpsons layout artist which mentioned how the original version were screened at animation staff parties, so there is definitely more footage out there than what was included on the DVD. Kent Butterworth was interviewed in 1990 about working on The Simpsons in this magazine issue, which also cites him as the director of The Telltale Head. Unsurprisingly he doesn't get fully into the circumstances of why he left but he does mention how he and Matt Groening had incompatible ideas over the animation. To be fair to Butterworth, as the shorts were the only existing media using these characters, you can see why he thought a cartoony approach would be accepted. https://johnpannozzi.blogspot.com/2008/07/all-about-kent-butterworth.html Incidentally, the writer of the 'handcuffs on a snake' Filmation Mighty Mouse cartoon that Thad mentioned was none other than Sam Simon.

Holy crap. I had assumed Thad was, like, 60 years old.

As the only guy without kids at my job, all of them dread the days that new animated movies come on streaming services, as they all fear their kid will latch onto it and then it's on the TV for the next 6 months, so yeah... Kids still do that. Also I too watched Spaceballs a million times as a kid, then moved to Robin hood men in tights

Great hearing Thad pop into TS for an episode after his WAC appearances. This episode, insane animation and all, is still far from the worst or dumbest entry in season 1, though I will totally admit that (much like most people, it seems) season 1 is much better than my memory led me to believe, having not watched it in probably a decade. This return back to the start with deeper dives and guests was excellent and I'm really glad you guys decided to throw this idea out to us. It *does* make me want to see a return to season 2 some day, but obviously that's ~double the episode count and the original TS episodes are longer than the season 1 eps were too, so it's a pipe dream for the time being. Season 11 is still in the era of episodes I don't groan too hard at, at least when looking at what it contains, so revisiting it should be interesting.

Thad's comment about the Robocop dick shooting made my spit my drink out laughing. One of the best guest appearances on TS keep up the good work!

2026-09-07 10:00 I totally remember the Windows 95 disk including the video for Weezer’s “Buddy Holly”. My copy also came with a loaded game demo disk which included basically the entire game of Doom, and a level of some “Beavis and Butthead” game which was single-handedly responsible for my love of B&B since I didn’t have cable

Always enjoy hearing Thad's comments. Hysterical! RE: passing the torch with June Foray on this episode, I'm surprised you didn't mention the similar passing and/or tribute to this episode on RICK AND MORTY. The episode "Total Rickall" has Rick saying the phrase "Rubber baby bumper bunker" as one of his catch phrases.
