We're entering the home stretch of Mission Hill with one of the most surprisingly touching episodes of the series to date. It's Kevin's birthday and everything goes wrong, but instead of making things even wronger, Andy tries to give his little brother the best bling-blong birthday Mission Hill can bring—which backfires miserably and sends Kevin sulking back to the suburbs. Listen in and learn about the power of brotherly love, and as an added bonus you'll also hear our interview with Rob Schwartz and Rich Siegel, the two guys who wrote this episode. Even more writers' room secrets REVEALED!

Blackened steak can be rare! It just uses a cooking method that quickly chars the outside and doesn't cook it all the way through. It makes for a steak that's crispy and smoky on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. Delicious! Fun (?) fact about me is I absolutely despise the Happy Birthday song (never, ever sing it to me). I LIKED that TV shows would skirt around it and had to be creative and come up with their own songs, but that wonderful era is over now. It is funny and weird how I run into someone I know every time Bob and I hang out here or go to an event. Not like, people I usually see either -- people from my past I haven't seen in years. We even ran into one of my best friends in elementary school! It's easy to stay home all the time and feel isolated but maybe if I went out more often I'd realize people remember me and like me...

Just listened to this episode, and it reminded me of two SF bus-related anecdotes. First - I was alone or almost alone on the 38-Geary, and a homeless guy got on. Sat a directly behind me on an empty bus, and kept saying stuff like "I want to suck dick so bad, I just wish I was sucking dick right now," for the whole ride (only a few stops, but still...) Second, and I can't BELIEVE I forgot this one, since I've been listening for about 3 years - my ex-wife and I were on either the 14-Mission or 49-Van Ness. This was at least 15 years ago, we were going to the movie theater at the Metreon (does that even exist anymore? I moved out of town a decade ago, after 17 years there). There was a developmentally disabled kid on the bus, with his mom. He was talking the whole ride, nothing special. But when he and his mom got off the bus, he stopped at the top of the front set of steps down, turned to the whole crowded bus and yelled "So long, stink town! That's Homer Simpson!" We almost passed out with laughter, both of us were huge Simpsons fans, and it was just a ridiculous situation.

If they did put an anus on that cake, I feel like the writers would be too tempted to stick one (are all?!) of the candles into that single spot. Crisis averted by excluding the anus altogether. I recently watched through all of Mission Hill thanks to you guys. Can't wait for the last two Mission Hill podcasts you guys do!

Could Randazzo also possibly be Tony Randazzo? He was a bad baseball umpire, maybe they watched a Dodger game where he blew a call.

If I get an ass cake in real life that shit better have an anus.... I'm cool with my cartoons skipping this step

Birthday parties for your pets are totally legit. My friend had one for her cat last week.

It's super awesome that you guys got to talk to Rob and Rich for this episode! -- I totally angry that, despite the alternate title, Andy REALLY IS the douchebag of the episode for two-thirds of it, to the point of being almost unlikable. Kevin certainly has his faults (like being an up-and-coming republican) but Andy is so mean for weak reasons in this, and it definitely would have been nice to explore it more without the... weak animal rescue B-plot. I really like the resolution to Andy & Kevin's part of the episode and I think it's very telling of the heights this show could have soared to if it wasn't cancelled so soon. Fingers crossed the revival gets picked up somewhere because I would absolutely watch the hell out of it. -- I'm not a huge IT IS MY BIRTHDAY, EVERYONE PAY ATTENTION TO ME, but I do like to use it as an excuse to get everyone I want to see together for some fun. I kind of stopped having birthday parties partway though grade school and didn't really do any birthday celebrations with friends again until 10th grade when I had my first real solid group of friends, so since then I've always made it a point to do something, even if it's only with a handful of people. Given quarantine this year, I was unable to do anything in person for mine last month which really sucked but I made the best of it, and obviously people have suffered worse due to COVID related issues.

Regarding Raising Canes: a few years ago I moved to Orange County, CA and had one right by where I lived. I tried it once and fell madly in love. At the time their strategy seemed to be to have them throughout the south, and then another 5 in Orange County. I can also happily report that all of the locations I have been to (including the one that opened by me after I moved again) are right next to Chick-fil-As and are seemingly neck and neck for costumers.

Just listened to this and could not have felt worse for Rich Siegel... losing your dad and dropping out of that screenplay, which got your partners big gigs like The Flintstones movie and Richie Rich. Great interview and great series!
