This week's episode of Talking Futurama tackles a format-breaking episode that seemed like it was going to become a regular occurrence until it didn't: the Anthology of Interest! Futurama's answer to Treehouse of Horror spins three tales slightly wilder than what you'd already see on an outlandish sci-fi series, all brought to you by the magic of the fing-longer. Along the way you'll witness the untimely death of Hanson, learn how to apply for mail-order degrees in murderology AND murderonomy, and, at long last, meet Scruffy. So listen in, as we discuss TALES OF INTEREST!

"probably for the best" that gygax died in 2008 because he was a libertarian and hypothetically *would* have said shitty things had he lived to the modern cultural era? More than a little mean spirited, no?

To be clear, I'm not claiming any particular depth of knowledge or fandom of gygax as an artist or expressing any alignment with his political views. I just felt the comment and subsequent (admitted) speculation on where his views would be today were unnecessary and mean spirited. I remember henry wishing death on members of the Bush family on an episode in 2016 which he subsequently apologized for, and the gygax comment seemed similarly nasty to me.

I can clarify on the pool bridge a little, it’s definitely easier to use that for some shots but it’s use is mainly for taking shots that you can’t reach with your forward hand on the table. Basically if in order to take your shot you would need to lay down on half of the table you just lay the bridge down instead and you can shoot from further back. I’ve played with some people who get annoyed by people who use the bridge but I’m fairly certain it’s usable in any pool game and it’s not like cheating or making the game easier it’s just allowing you to take shots that otherwise couldn’t reach, hence why they call it a bridge, plus it gives you more leverage

I have always thought the Professor's invention was the "Finglonger", but my child is very loud and talkative during tv so I watched this with him with subtitles on, and every time it was mentioned it was called "The Thing Longer"! And because of the suggestion from the subtitles I started to HEAR "thing longer". And during this podcast every time you said it my brain couldn't decide whether I was hearing "thing" or "fing". Can someone put me out of my misery and confirm that it is in fact the "fing" longer and the subtitles were wrong?

You mentioned it was odd that they forgot to include Nibbler's shadow when Fry is in the cyrolab, but it's BECAUSE Nibbler's shadow (and therefore, Nibbler himself) isn't there that Fry doesn't fall in. Nibbler was sent to Earth in 1999/2000 to ensure Fry falls into the tube so he can be around in the early 3000's to stop the Brain attacks. So since Nibbler isn't there, Fry doesn't fall in.

Enjoyed the show, guys. The "Bender as a human" tease actually had me double-guessing which AOI episode this was. So now I guess it works on another level! It's a shame you skipped over everyone being sucked into the vortex near the end though. After hearing the commentary, the sound Al Gore makes at this moment always makes me laugh hysterically. Keep up the awesome work. ^_^

Pussy from Pittsburgh which is beautiful BTW

An acquaintance of mine actually makes shrinky dinks to this day. She uses them to make NSFW magnets. I’ve bought two from her they are both cartoony penises with a smiling face one has a cocokring on and the other is white with gold stars. She also makes superhero ones, ones dressed up as each of the doctors from doctor who, and all of the same types of designs of a clitoris including the internal parts. They are surprisingly cute.

Great podcast guys! Two small observations. In pool (billiards), you might use a bridge to line up a shot where you might have to take both feet off the floor to reach the cue in a reasonable way which is against the rules in some kinds of play. With the bridge, you can stand further back to line up your shot. Also, and here is my time to really shine as an actual, working theoretical physicist who spends all of his time watching a children's cartoon show. The joke about the "Grand Unified School District" is not a joke about underfunded schools (per se), but is rather a joke about a "Grand Unified Theory," also known as a GUT (no joke). In theoretical physics, a GUT is a theory that combines the electromagnetic, weak, and strong nuclear forces into one unified theoretical framework. This is in contrast to a so-called "Theory of Everything" (or TOE, we have great acronyms in physics) which would also combine the force of gravity with the other three fundamental forces into one unified theory of everything. For lots of reasons, some working physicists think a GUT would be on the road to a TOE, but some feel that it's TOE or nothing. No one knows because currently, we don't have a working example of either. The standard model of particle physics (SM) is, in principle, a unified theory of electromagnetism and the weak force (combined into the so-called electroweak force) and is combined with QCD, our theory of the strong interactions, but it is really two separate pieces written in one framework and is not a GUT because all three forces do not unify. This has been the situation since the 1970s. String Theory was supposed to be an actual TOE, but does not quite work. Stephen Hawking was involved in research of both GUTs and TOEs in his professional work and I think the "Grand Unified School District" is a super-inside physics joke aimed at fans of Hawking. This is what I love about Futurama, some of the jokes seemed to have been written just for me.

Can someone please explain why we don’t see Nibbler’s shadow?

One of my favorite episodes. I'd actually like to propose a means of hacking off a torso: Folding the body in half, thus making the midsection an "end" to be hack off-able. Though I'm not sure how feasible that would be realistically as I haven't tried it... Yet...

I'll say this much about Henry's postulations about Gygax: Just going off early editions of D&D, women do have a limit on Strength that men don't in that game. And if you've ever been on the traditional games board of 4chan (I know, I know...) then you know '-4 Strength' is a meme. So yeah wouldn't surprise me if Gygax had opinions on biotruths but I haven't gotten much word on anything the man wrote directly in regards to that.

Does the Professor have human steaks in his refrigerator? When introducing Leela to his man-eating anteaters, the Professor feeds them 2 steaks. I know it could be regular beef steaks, but I read it as him feeding them human meat.

Can't remember if you pointed this out during the first Cubert episode or during the What a Cartoon! on Weekenders, but it hit me on this listen that Kath Soucie's voice for Cubert is basically exactly the same as the voice for Tish

It's been a minute since I've watched Anthology of Interest II so I'm not sure which I'd say is the better episode, but I really, really love this one. The 500 Foot Tall Bender segment is definitely the weakest (even if it's still pretty fun), but the Leela and Fry stories more than make up for its flaws. I love how Leela's in particular shits all over the conventions of the mystery story while playing up characters' stupidity and obliviousness, like Zoidberg in the Poirot role telling Hermes to shut up so he can solve the mystery, completely ignoring the solution being blatantly obvious in the other room. It really is a shame that they never made this an annual tradition like Treehouse of Horror (even if I didn't watch much of the Comedy Central era anyway).
