You're not the boss of this surprise podcast this week as we welcome back the great writer and podcaster Nathan Rabin (check out his new Weird Al book)! We discuss the show that aired alongside Simpsons for over six years, Malcolm in the Middle! How did the show come to be and why was it arguably The Simpsons perfect timeslot counterpart? Listen now or we'll repeat the question!

the trifecta of KotH/Simpsons/Malcolm on Sundays was my favorite line up

Malcom in the Middle has a similar energy for me as Calvin and Hobbes. Not that they're thematically similar, but both are about how much growing up sucks and how suffering builds character. Both also got better as they went on and both have made me laugh so hard I cry.

I'm so glad you guys deciphered all the clips in the intro. I knew Bret Hart was in it but also, that was Benoit? Oof. I did enjoy the show as I was growing, my family situation wasn't as bad as Malcolm's but I did connect with Malcolm a lot as a kid but unlike him, I was never sent to gifted class, maybe only once in the 4th grade but I was bad at Math and that did me in. It's like going back on King of the Hill, as I was young, I always hated how brash Lois was but looking back, her heart was in the right place, she just did it her way much like how Hank cares about his family, it's just the zaniness overshadowed it so I didn't see the layers to it till I got older up to the finale as Malcolm graduated high school just as I did. I do think it'll join Disney+ but that situation is so weird, who knows what they'll do to it as Hulu just becomes the FX Service. Also, I really remember Reese from being in a episode of RL Stine's the Nightmare Room where he gets attacked by WCWs Sting! I do wonder if you guys will talk about The PJs since while it's also connected with Simpsons and while it first aired back around Season 10, it feels like the last adjacent show with The Simpsons (at least on the schedule) till American Dad around 2005.

One thing I really liked how they explored everyone's genius....lois was a genius at dispensing punishments, hal was a genius at skipping work and disco skate dancing and other random things, dewy with music, reese with cooking, Francis with scheming, and of course Malcolm.

Youngblood #1 may be rare, but it's certainly NOT good. I mean, unless you want to see one superhero named Die Hard drawn in such bad art that, at one point, it REALLY looks like he attacked someone with his crotch.

The finale of Malcolm is up there with Jurassic Bark in the list of episodes of tv comedies that instantly make me misty.

Never did really get Malcolm in the Middle - every character just struck me as unlikable and when it isn't a cartoon there's not that separation that will make me want to back them up anyway. But damn, it sure did do well in that post-Simpsons slot.

Always was a fan of the show. A buddy of mine also has the last name Muniz, a name of Spanish origin, and always expressed irritation at the “munez “ pronunciation. Apparently “muneez” is the correct way to say it, with the enya ( I’m not sure how to spell that Spanish letter) in the middle.

The episode where Craig Lamar Traylor's character is shown walking comes from the episode "Reese vs. Stevie" and the context of it is crazier than you think. In the episode Reese has finally had enough of Stevie insulting him and getting his way but because of his physical disability Reese can't do anything about it. However Reese decides he's going to fight him anyway and in order to make it fair he soaks his lower body into ice water so his legs are limp and can be on even ground with Stevie. What Reese doesn't know is that Stevie was recently accepted into a medical institute as a research subject and for the fight borrows a robot exoskeleton allowing him to walk and beat up Reese. The thought of an able body kid giving himself a handicap in order to fight a physically disabled kid only to have it flip on him in the end always made this episode funny for me.

Hate to be that guy, Henry, but Youngblood (or Young Blood, as Muniz called it) #1 was not a rare comic book by any means. It was certainly not in 2000, long after the initial Image hype had died down, Liefeld was a joke and a pariah (and no longer at Image), and it could be found in $0.25 bargain bins everywhere. Without digging up old Wizard or HI issues, I think at its height (say, 1993), you could probably see it listed for $15-$20 max but you could always get it for around $5 at a con. Oh, and I’ll hear no badmouthing of Savage Dragon. That book was, and remains, the sole long-running, singular vision project of the Big Six to successfully survive almost three decades of upheaval. It’s an accomplishment and a damn fun book too. Around the time of MITM’s debut, Larsen was at the height of his powers, he had figured out exactly what he wanted out of it, and SD was firing on all cylinders.

No It Doesn't

Malcolm in the Middle is such a gem of a tv show, I'm really glad it was able to be an episode of Talking Simpsons! One thing that I noticed that was kinda odd during the pilot was when Lois hangs up on Francis we can hear the dial tone from his end of the phone, but Malcolm and Reese are still holding the landline phone on their end. If Lois did hang up her phone, the call would still be connected because another phone is off the hook, right? I might be wrong though; maybe there were some cordless phones out there that could disconnect a call with a specific button. Anyway I just thought it was a fun "magical xylophone" moment to point out haha And also! Listening to this podcast episode made me want to rewatch Malcolm in the Middle. There's an episode in Season 1 I had just watched where Malcolm gets a head injury and is driven to the hospital, but as he is he directly says to the camera "One good thing about a head injury is I won't remember any of this." I immediately got sad from how dark and true that statement would become for Frankie Muniz. Yikes!

Really enjoyed this episode! I loved Malcolm in the Middle but haven’t seen it in years. My 15 year old has been bugging me to subscribe to hulu and after listening to this episode I gave in because it made me want to rewatch the series. :) One of my favorite things about the show, especially as I got older, was Lois and Hal’s relationship. My parents never seemed to like each other that much so it was interesting to me to see two busy, frazzled parents who were very much in love.

On the history portion regarding Bryan Cranston, I'm surprised Henry didn't mention his playing of a villain on the John Wesley Shipp Flash show. He actually physically kicks the crap out of Barry. Also you missed another Malcolm callback with the Cran Man - on Family Guy where Hal kills Lois. Bryan Cranston really does enjoy making fun of himself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YWWWQR6nMZU One other point - I'm sure your guest is a nice guy but he needs to enunciate or get a better mic. Every sentence starts at a volume level of 5 and quickly descends to an unintelligible 1. I had to stop raising & lowering my speaker level after a while and just zone him out.

Wonderful ep! Tbh, I would mind if Talking in the Middle made its way into the next series roster at some point. Just sayin'

I watched this randomly as a kid but revisiting this for the podcast was a treat. I ended up rewatching the first 5 episodes just because it was so easy to sit down and enjoy, and I think I'm going to end up working my way through the rest of it at some point.
